A New League or: Yes to the X

Salutations™!!

So the NFL season is over and that means no football, right? Wrong!! There’s a new game in town and it’s still football! In 2001, Vince McMahon started a new football league that was basically WWE (actually, WWF at the time) on a football field. It was real football but they cared more about the entertainment than the sport.

This past Saturday and Sunday, McMahon brought the XFL back and this time, it is all about football.

There are only eight teams, all owned by Alpha Entertainment, McMahon’s new company, all the players are paid competitive wages and each team is run by a President and GM. All the teams are playing in cities with an NFL team or have had one in the recent past.

The previous XFL did bring some cool inventions. They brought the skycam, which is a camera system on cables that makes the camera hover over the field and brings a whole new perspective. The NFL followed suit not long after. The XFL had the camera people on the field upwind from the play so they wouldn’t be in the way. They have that again. The NFL had it on the field for touchdowns and in-between play. I do wish they allowed the wide receivers to move toward the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped like they do in Arena (i.e. The Carolina Cobras) and did in the XFL the first time.

Mostly, however, the game is played like the NFL with just a few tweaks. Here is a rundown of some of those rules, per NBC LA:

The XFL aims to play each game in under three hours, but with the same amount of plays. It will have a 25-second play clock that begins after the ball is spotted for the next play. The NFL has a 40-second play clock.

Outside of the last two minutes of each half, when a play ends out of bounds or on an incomplete pass, the game clock will be stopped until the ball is spotted. In the NFL, the clock stops after every out of bounds play until the referee re-spots the ball and on incomplete passes until the next play begins.

XFL teams will have two timeouts per half, one fewer than in the NFL. Halftime is 10 minutes, two minutes less than the NFL.

Another attempt to shorten the game is not allowing coaches to challenge an official’s ruling. All plays are subject to review by the replay official.

The final two minutes of each half has been dubbed the “comeback period.” On plays ending in the field of play, the clock will be stopped until the ball has been spotted and five seconds have been run off the clock. On out-of-bounds plays, the clock will stop until the ball is snapped.

Stopping the game clock after every play in the final two minutes of a half will give the trailing team the opportunity to maximize its remaining time and still be able to use its complete playbook, including runs or plays in the middle of the field.

If a team completes a pass behind the line of scrimmage, it can throw a second forward pass as long as the ball has not crossed the line of scrimmage.

Coaches have the option of attempting a one-point conversion from the 2-yard line, a two-point conversion from the 5-yard line or a 3-point conversion from the 10-yard line after a touchdown. Kicks on conversion attempts are not allowed.

If the defense causes a turnover on a conversion attempt and is able to return the ball to the opponent’s end zone, the resulting score is equal to the number of points the offense was attempting to score.

Several changes are being made to kickoffs, both attempting to reduce high-speed collisions and the resulting injuries but also encouraging more kickoff returns.

The kickoff will be from the 30-yard line, five yards behind the NFL spot. Kickers must kick the ball in the air and in play between the opponent’s 20-yard line and the end zone.

xfl LA_WILDCATS

©XFL/Alpha Entertainment

The coverage team will line up on the return side 35-yard line and the return team on the 30-yard line. Each team must have exactly three players outside the hash marks on both sides of the ball and cannot move until the ball is caught by the returner.

Players can move when the ball is touched by the returner or three seconds after the ball touches the ground. Out-of-bounds kicks and kicks falling short of the 20-yard line will result in an illegal procedure penalty with the receiving team getting the ball on the kicking team’s 45-yard line.

If the ball is kicked into the end zone and is downed, it is a “major” touchback, and the ball is placed on the return side 35-yard line.

Teams wishing to attempt an onside kick must indicate this to an official before the play. The teams will be permitted to line up using traditional NFL rules, 10 yards apart from the spot of the kick.

xfl New_York_Guardians

©XFL/Alpha Entertainment

The XFL has a set of rule changes designed both to increase the percentage of punts that are returned and discourage punting inside the opponent’s territory.

The punting team cannot release past the line of scrimmage until the ball is kicked. In the NFL, the end man on the line of scrimmage can cross the line of scrimmage once the ball is punted. Tests of the rule found an average distance of 11 yards between the punt returner and the nearest defender, five yards more than what happens under NFL rules.

Punts going out of bounds inside the 35-yard line are considered a “major” touchback with the ball going to the 35-yard line, as are punts landing in the end zone or going out of the end zone.

If the score is tied at the end of regulation, overtime will be similar to penalty-kick shootouts in soccer or penalty-shot shootouts in the NHL.

xfl Seattle_Dragons

©XFL/Alpha Entertainment

Overtime shall consist of five rounds, staged in alternating single-play possessions. A round will consist of one offensive play per team. Each possession starts at the opponent’s 5-yard line and the offensive team has one play to score. The team with more points after five rounds is the winner.

If teams are tied after five rounds, then rounds continue until one team is leading at the conclusion of a round. The overtime will end once a team has been mathematically eliminated.

Each scoring play in overtime will be worth two points. The defense cannot score in overtime.

One of the XFL’s goals is to “try to provide as much access to the fan as we possibly can during the broadcast” including showing coaches as they speak to their teams, having officials wear microphones and allowing players to be interviewed during the game.

When I watched the games this weekend, all four teams that I was pulling for lost. The Seattle Dragons lost to the DC Defenders, LA Wildcats lost to the Houston Roughnecks, Tampa Bay Vipers lost to the New York Guardians, the Dallas Renegades lost to the St. Louis BattleHawks. That means I’m 0-4 in picks. There is also a “Team 9” that consists of 40 players that didn’t make a team that gets full practice with coaches – offensive and defensive, no special teams – that acts as a reserve for teams with injuries. Team 9 can be replenished, as far as I can tell.

This has been a better game than the AAF that tried to start up last year at this time and the attendance (average of 17,454 fans) and ratings were decent (3.12 Million). Yes, that’s a far cry from what the NFL does but it was a good start. I bet if television was around when the NFL started, the ratings and crowds would look worse than the XFL.  The fact that we had a good Super Bowl probably helped. After last year’s SB, we were ready to just let football rest for the offseason.

©XFL/Alpha Entertainment

I’m glad it’s here and I plan on watching all of the games, at least as I can. As of right now, I’m pulling for the Seattle Dragons, Tampa Bay Vipers and Dallas Renegades. I can’t believe I’m pulling for a Dallas team, but I love their uniforms and we know how I feel about unis. The games are played on Fox, ABC and ESPN. Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm and 5pm. Special thanks again to KNBC in Los Angeles for the rules clarification.

Health, Life, Life as It is, tired, WrestleMania, WWE

Salutations™!!

I am dragging today. I don’t know why. I’m lethargic and tired. I even nodded off for a few minutes in the studio. I thought I slept okay. I felt like I did. Leopard_Resting_on_Tree_600

I know WrestleMania was last night. And, yeah, I know its cheesy but I’ve been a ‘Rasslin” ran all my life and that hasn’t changed. This is not a post about that, but I will say it started off right and just dwindled over time. I’m going to say it, seven hours of wrestling is too much. I can sit and watch WWE Network for hours but when it’s all current/keeping-up-with stuff, that’s hard. Seven hours, I tell ya. The pre-game started at 5pm and the show proper at 7pm and went until midnight (well later because I had paused it a couple of times). Too much, WWE, remember that.

On top of just being tired, for the first time in four months, I slept with my contacts in. Mine are made to withstand that every once in a while but my eyes have grown accustomed to resting at night. I also think that not having them in allows me to rest better, as well. That is probably a big contributor to this. I don’t know how I forgot to take them out. It is a nightly routine. I guess I was mentally fatigued from watching the choreographed combative ballet that I enjoy so much.

So, I’ve been listening to Queensryche in the studio trying to wake myself up. I’m kind of glad we didn’t record Fan Interference today because I may have very well fallen asleep on TC. No worries, though, I’m okay. I have Apartment 5B to do in a bit (have I told you about that? That’s another story) and a late lunch with my good pal, Tim. That will wake me up.

Then I’ll go home and watch more WWE until I fall out (and take my contacts out). I hope you have a great day…

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Admittedly, this will fall into the “I didn’t know he/she was still alive” bin. And, admittedly, I’ll be once again unashamedly professing my love for professional wrestling, both past and present.

IYR4xGJ

Bobby “The Brain” Heenan

The news came in this morning that legendary wrestler, manager and commentator Bobby “The Brain” Heenan had passed away at the age of 73. He’d been battling cancer since 2002 (or possibly before) and the disease had basically robbed Brain of his voice, his recognizability and probably a lot of “life” itself. He was resilient, though and didn’t give up living in wake of the terrible infliction.

Though not in my memory banks as ingrained as Dusty Rhodes, Ric Flair, and others who had their heyday back in the 70s-90s, Brain was still a big figure. He was witty, clever, mean and one that you loved to hate. His quotes always seemed to naturally flow from his mouth, unlike Jerry “The King” Lawler, whom I also really dig, it’s just sometimes it is forced. Not so with Heenan.

A WWE Hall of Famer, Heenan was big on being involved. His history as being a wrestler first helped him take the bumps needed to pull off his folly. But, because of his ability to help his “clients” win, by hook or by crook, scheming and conniving, all the clandestine wonderfulness that he was able to manage combined with his quippy intellect, that was how he became “The Brain.”

Some of the names of which he managed are Blackjack Lanza, Blackjack Mulligan, Ken Patera, Nick Bockwinkle, Sgt. Slaughter (before he was Sgt. Slaughter), “Big Cat” Ernie Ladd, Ron Bass, Angelo Poffo (Macho Man Randy Savage’s pops), Baron von Raschke, Valiant Brothers, The Islanders, Big John Studd, King Kong Bundy, Ravishing Rick Rude, Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff, The Barbarian, Terry Taylor, Lex Lugar, The Missing Link, Haku/Meng, Butch Reed, Mr.Perfect Curt Hennig, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Ric Flair and probably most famously, Andre the Giant. That’s just a partial list.

But, what I always liked best about him was his one-liners, quips, and smart-alecky snark. With either Gorilla Monsoon, Vince McMahon or Tony Schiavone, he always let them (and us) have it. I’m including a few of my favorite quotes by him:

I’m a legend in this sport. If you don’t believe me, ask me.

North Dakota State. What do you have to do there to graduate? Milk a cow with your left hand?

It’s a dog eat dog world, and Mr. Perfect is a Milk Bone.

Parts Unknown, it usually means Downtown Newark.

It was a Greco-Roman Hair Pull.

Thank goodness for next year, huh Ross. Indoor plumbing comes to Oklahoma.

The man is nuts! He’s got papers to prove it!

The Barbarian doesn’t like anybody. When I managed him he barely liked me! Why do you think they call him the Barbarian? He’s not a hairdresser on his day off!

I know all about cheating. I’ve had six very successful marriages (which wasn’t true, he was married to one woman from 1966 until yesterday).

There hasn’t and probably won’t be another like Bobby “The Brain” Heenan. I am glad I got to hear and see him do his thing. He was awesome at it. He wasn’t afraid to take a bump and he wasn’t afraid to speak out. It seemed like he truly had a lot of friends in the business and they really loved him. RIP, “Weasel.”

Cooking, Crafted; The Art of the Taco, History of the World Part I, Mary's Gourmet Diner, Netflix, Sawtooth School, The Man Who Ate the Town, Twin City Hive, Underdog Records, Willow's Bistro, WWE

Salutations™!!

This weekend, from Friday until yesterday was filled with good stuff and I wouldn’t ochange a single thing about it. It was fun, informative, entertaining and just plain great.

It started on Friday. I picked up 3B from school and we came home to watch the latest in our run of 13 Reasons Why on Netflix. Then, the BCPF came home early and we went to have some artsy-styled beer at the Sawtooth School‘s Arts & Craft Beer where we met up with Beer Dad Paul, his Pilot, Susan, our friends Jim, Jordan and Michael & Karen. After we had about 12 different brews, we headed to one of our favorite restaurant, Willows Bistro, where we all broke bread together as well as more imbibing. We really enjoyed our evening.

Saturday, The BCPF and I were up and to Mary’s Gourmet Diner and then to Underdog Records (of course). We nabbed a great haul (see yesterday’s post) and had some great coffee at Twin City Hive. We came home and listened for a few hours and went to our standing bar rezzie at Willows (yes, two days in a row). As we were going to Willows, we got a text from our pals Stacy and Paden, inviting us to come over and hang out on the deck and do a little more imbibing. So, we had a great meal at Willows then went and hung with S&V and Beer Dad Paul. We talked life, podcasting, rekkeds and just had a wonderful time.

Sunday came and we kind of lazed around before going to eat at Crafted: The Art of the Taco and picked up 3B. We went grocery shopping (I really enjoy grocery shopping) and came home to watch History of the World, Part I in the latest “movies that we (The BCPF & I) grew up on.” Then we started dinner, which was probably one of my favorite things we’ve ever made here, “In the Home Kitchen.” It was a peanut curry chicken. Delicious. I’ll post about that on the food blog. Then it was a WWE PPV and we had fun watching that.

So many great times with my best girl. Many great times with my boy. Many great times with our friends. So much that I wouldn’t trade for anything. We are so lucky to have what and who we have in our lives.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

I have never been ashamed to say that I am a fan of professional wrestling. Yes, I know it’s choreographed and yes, I know it’s set up, but it’s, to me, a real business. I love the ins and outs. I love the behind the scenes stuff. I love the fact that most of the biggest rivals ever, are really friends and usually drinking buddies or just hanging out kind of chums. I do a weekly movie review for The Less Desirables and here, so I like acting. But, like in films I am a fan of the behind the scenes details of the film, usually more so than the actual film. And, in football, as much as I love the sport and watching the games, I really love the offseason: the trades, the draft, the free agency (although I don’t like free agency as a concept, I love watching the puzzles be reshuffled).

My favorite wrestler has always been The Undertaker. I love the mysticism, the mystique and the macabre elements of the character. Mark Calaway plays the part perfectly. Calaway’s been playing “Booger Red” (a nickname given him by Jim “JR” Ross) since 1990, although he’s been in the ‘rasslin bidness (thanks Dusty) since the mid-80s. He is the longest-reigning active superstar in the WWE locker room. He is the conscience of the company. He’s one of the most respected, if not the most respected person in the locker room and most of the other superstars look to him for guidance and direction. His character changed a lot over the years from a cartoonish old-west style undertaker with black and purple garb to pure evil to a biker-style gimmick that I really didn’t care for and back to an evil-ish dude. He has been in over 60 PPVs since he arrived (his first ever WWE appearance was Survivor Series 1990), but his true claim to fame has always been Wrestlemania. Eugene always makes fun and says it’s a lame gimmick because if he was truly undead then he’d have better things to do than wrestle. I always countered that it was no less plausible than this concept: if these superstars had this much trouble with each other, I’m sure they’d not wait until Monday night or a PPV to take care of it. It’s all story line and part of the process.

The wrestling business’ Super Bowl is Wrestlemania and it happens every year between late-March and early-April. It is “the big dance,” “the grandest stage of them all” and this year was known as “the ultimate thrill ride,” mostly because it occurred at Camping World Stadium (formerly known as the Citrus Bowl) in Orlando, Florida and Orlando is known for its theme parks and “thrill rides.” The Undertaker had in his previous 24 appearances in WM amassed a record of 23-1, the first defeat coming at the hands of Brock Lesnar in Wrestlemania XXX, just three years ago. Before that, he was 21-0. That’s a famed and revered record.

Last night was the 32 episode of Wrestlemania and I think it was one of the best ones I’ve seen in a long, long time. I’m warning you that I will be giving away spoilers, which I try to not do, but I will in this instance. So, if you don’t want to know what happened in last night, don’t read any further. I’ll wait as you make your exodus…

TheUndertaker181-1

Okay, still with me? This will probably be long, so I apologize for that. Let’s start with the “pre-show.” I don’t know why they don’t just call it the main show and start at 6pm. Two hours of buildup on the day of the event is kind of pointless and they downplay some important pieces of the puzzle by making the matches part of “the pre-show.” It’s still in the ring in the middle of the huge set and on TV. Just make the show longer. I guess they have to justify paying Booker T, Jerry Lawler, Lita and Shawn Michaels their legacy pay for something. I like Renee Young. I wish they’d replace Mauro Ranallo or at least David Otunga on commentary for Smackdow. Mauro hasn’t been there in a month, getting over depression. I’m not making light of that, but get out of the way and let someone else take the spot. Renee Young is good, better than either Ranallo or Otunga. Get rid of the “pre-show” and extend the show, that’s what I say about that.

So, two championships were decided in the “pre-show:” The Cruiserweight Championship (Raw/205 Live) where Neville (c) beat Austin Aries; and one of the most storied championship belts in all of wrestling history, the Intercontinental Championship which saw Dean Ambrose (c) beat Baron Corbin. Why keep those in the “pre-show?” The Andre the Giant Battle Royal was also held in the “pre-show.” That was nothing more than a big advertisement for the WWE to kiss Rob Gronkowski’s rear end as he interfered, taking out Jinder Mahal and giving the win to his buddy Mojo Rawley. Why name something after one of the most recognizable superstars in history and build it up for something just to use it as an afterthought? That’s silly, especially the way it was booked. If you’re gonna disregard the match, why not just drop it instead of doing this? So, while I thought Wrestlemania was great, I didn’t care for the “pre-show.” It was crappy.

The actual event started and the first match was the Phenomenal A.J. Styles taking on the Smackdown Commissioner (and part owner of the company), Shane McMahon. Truthfully, this was a solid and fantastic match. Lots of “holy s**t” moments and Shane really held his own in there. A.J. won, by the way.

Next was Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho (c) for the United States Championship. It was obvious that KO was going to win, for a couple of reasons. 1) Jericho was a setup for Owens to have a belt with it not being the Universal Heavyweight championship, 2) Jericho is going on the road with his band Fozzy for the next few months. It was a great match because Jericho can carry anyone. KO wasn’t shabby, either, although I’m not really a fan of him, overall. He does have talent. I’m not going to give a bunch of move-exposing here, just who won or lost (at least for the most part).

In a fatal-four-way elimination match for the Raw Women’s Championship, Nia Jax was destroying Bayley (c), Charlotte Flair and Sasha Banks until the other three ganged up on Nia. She was killing it. So, she had to be triple teamed to be eliminated. Then Sasha. It came down to Bayley and Charlotte. Bayley pulled off the win showing she didn’t need any help from anyone else to “take care” of Charlotte.

Big-pop moment of the night, which was a surprise/not-surprise, happened during the Raw tag team championship match. It was to be a triple threat ladder match with Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson (c) defending against Enzo Amore and Big Cass and Cesaro and Sheamus. Before the match started, The New Day, who were hosts of the show, said they had been informed that it was going to be a fatal-four-way ladder match but who would be the fourth team? I thought at first it was going to be them (that would have been obvious), but suddenly the Hardy Boyz music cranked and they come out to the delight of the crowd (and me). It’s unclear if they’ll use their “Broken” gimmick but as of right now, they are just back and that’s what matters. I actually got giddy, myself. I loved the Hardys before they left a few years back. So, a few swanton bombs and twists of fates off of tall ladders and you have new tag champs, The Hardy Boyz. Entertaining match, this. Welcome back Matt and Jeff.

John Cena and Nikki Bella, a real-life couple, have their lives broadcast on the E!/WWE production, Total Divas. They were called out by fellow real-lifers Miz and Maryse, mostly because Nikki talks about how much she wants to get married but John drags his feet on asking. Well, after several weeks of build up, Miz and Maryse get beat by John and Nikki. John then asks Nikki to marry him. I don’t know how much she knew about it before it happened, they insist it was unknown to Nikki and everyone except one (John refused to say who that was). It was sweet and the match was as good as you could expect a mixed tag match to go.

Triple H came to the ring on a motorcycle with Stephanie McMahon riding in the “b*tch seat and with a motorcycle cop escort. Seth Rollins was finally going to get his hands on Triple H after what he did to him (turned on him and cost him the heavyweight title after). There was no title here. Just a good ol’ street fight. Just not enough omph in that match. I really wish Triple H would go ahead and retire. He’s a legend and a former-in-ring-commander but he’s getting long in the tooth and has a powergrab problem where he’s got to be in the spotlight more than is usually dealt to us. I really dig Triple H, but jeez o’Pete! Run the company and stay out of the ring. Seth Rollins had had his second knee surgery in two years and they played up that injury but Seth Rollins took it home in the end.

The Smackdown Heavyweight title was up with the up-and-coming powerhouse and a new fave of mine, Bray Wyatt (c) going against Randy Orton. There was a bunch of gross-out moments with the ring turning into maggots, worms, and roaches. It was cool but over the top, really. Not a bad thing, just curious. I don’t think WWE knows what to do with Bray. Randy has been champ (now) 13 times and doesn’t need the belt. Let the youngsters do their thing. Bray has plenty of charisma, works the mic great and works the ring, too. Anywhat! The powers that be decided to give the belt to Randy anyway. Boo!

In the who really cares department, it was the third installment of Goldberg (c) vs Lesnar for the Universal championship. Goldberg had defeated Lesnar in short order the previous two instances but Lesnar had Goldberg’s number this time. Just under five minutes this match was moved along because the whole show was running late. Lesnar is the new champ, great (smell the sarcasm).

In a match that was supposed to be in the “pre-show” until the fans complained, the Smackdown Women’s belt was up for grabs in a six-pack challenge. Becky Lynch, Alexa Bliss (c), Mickie James, Carmella, Natalya and Naomi fought for the belt. Naomi (who had to give up the belt due to injury a week after winning it earlier this year) is from Orlando and who didn’t see her win coming? So, Naomi, wins. Again, the show was running way late and they pushed that through with little fanfare. No one really seemed to care. They were tired at this point.

Then the main event. The Undertaker was taking on Roman Reigns in a “this is my yard” match. Not really, just what went on the whole time. JR returned a week after retiring and only a week after his wife was killed in a bicycle/car accident and that let us know something was up. That and it was after two heavyweight championship matches. It was a back and forth and then Roman speared ‘Taker five times and gave him his second and probably last Wrestlemania loss. Afterwards, Roman left kind of bewildered and conflicted. ‘Taker put his garb back on, the music played, the lights went purple and then he took off his gloves, placed them in the middle of the ring; took off his coat, folded it, dusted it off and placed it on the gloves; removed his hat, rolled his eyes back in his head, laid the hat on the pile and got out of the ring. He hugged his family and kissed his wife (TOTALLY out of character for him) and walked halfway up the nearly quarter mile ramp and disappeared on a trap door that lowered him down and out of sight.

This was the symbolic “passing the torch” from ‘Taker to Roman. The long 26 year run of Mark Calaway’s Undertaker character has come to an end. It was cool to see him out of character at the end. It was sad and surreal. I will miss that and I’m sure that he will be in the Hall of Fame very soon, maybe even next year. I’m used to him not being there often, but there was always the chance of him showing up. The match with Roman was kind of clunky but it was still there.

Overall, the show was really good. Good pops, good feel and the crowd in Orlando was electric. Thank you Mark Calaway and WWE for providing my plenty of fodder for my dark, mystical fantasies and my fantasy world that I’ve always said I live in. Undertaker (the gimmick) thank you for the memories.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

I think I may have mentioned that I still watch WWE. Yeah, I watch “professional” rasslin’. I know it’s scripted and all that mess, but you know what? I still find it interesting. I’ll admit that as of late there’s been some lull in the “interesting” and it’s not been as WM32interesting as it was a few years back. I love the new talent that’s stepping up but the story lines have been stale. A lot of predictability and gummed-up writing is what we’ve kind of gotten used to.

Ever since the “Attitude Era,” or more specifically, since Linda McMahon ran for office and they watered everything down to keep her looking like a model politician, things haven’t been the same. There are bright spots here and there and some of the PPVs have been worth watching, others not. Then you have the fact that I’m older, and like a lot of my friends that used to watch it, I have a hard time letting go of the oldsters that were what made it so great for me, but I do.

Last night was WrestleMania 32 and it was a whopper. Not only in spectacle but in time. The pre-game started at 5pm, split between the WWE Network and USA Network until 7pm when the PPV proper started. Most of the PPVs start at 8pm and are done around 10:50pm. This one finished its last match at 11:40pm. So that’s almost seven hours of WrestleMania. I’m not complaining, just saying it was a lot. Not only was it a lot, it was a great show; probably the best PPV I’ve seen WWE sling in quite a while… quite a while.

I’m going to talk about some of the stuff, so there will be spoilers. If you haven’t seen the show and are planning on watching later and don’t want to know, then you should probably skip down to the quote and sign off. Thanks for reading! If you don’t care to know, or you did see it, then hang in there. I’m just going to touch on some stuff as briefly as I can.

I have never been a fan of Zack Ryder. I think he’s a fine worker but that “Woo woo woo, You Know It!” crap and the “bro” aspect has always been dumb. Well, he stopped poofing his hair and grew a beard and he pulled off a win in a fantastic ladder match to defeat the champ Kevin Owens, Dolph Ziggler, Sin Cara, Miz, Sami Zayn and Stardust (who was dressed in black with yellow polka dots in honor of his daddy, the late great American Dream Dusty Rhodes). It was Zack’s first title in WWE and he’ll be a good Intercontinental Champ, I think. I was just glad they allowed someone else a little push. Who knows how long they’ll let him keep it but it’s good he got that. The whole match was non-stop action from the beginning to the end.

The Chris Jericho/AJ Styles match was another action-packed match. Jericho still has it and Styles showed why they call him Phenomenal. Lots of high risk maneuvers from both guys and the table turning was remarkable. Advantage Jericho, no wait, Styles, no Jericho, whoa. I was also glad that Jericho got the win, I thought throwing him to the side was premature and Styles has time to make an impact.

The New Day (Kofi, Xavier Woods, Big E) vs. League of Nations (Del Rio, Sheamus, Rusev with Barrett). TND has come into their own as of late. I hated that gimmick at first but it’s grown on me. They work well together, too. I think this was Barrett’s last WM and possibly all he wrote for his WWE career in general as he stated he wasn’t going to renew his contract and I think it’s up soon. Anyway, thanks to Barrett’s interference LON won. Then they said there wasn’t anyone in the history of the company that could take the LON. Well, in the “surprise of the night (part 1),” HBK’s music hit and he came out, followed by Mick Foley, well, Mankind’s music and then Stone Cold Steve Austin’s music. They got in the ring and LON was taunting them, saying, the “old timers” only had three to their four. That’s when TND pulled Barrett out of the ring and left the rest one-on-one. Austin, Foley and Michaels took turns giving their signature moves to the various LON members. Then Austin got his signature beer thrown into the ring where the oldsters drank and did their thing. Then TND got in the ring and got Foley and Michaels to dance. Austin “stunnered” Xavier Woods and more beer. It was great seeing them and while they are old, they moved pretty good in ring. Foley was hobbling getting there but turned it on.

Other than the finish, I think the “women’s division” brought it! These aren’t the women of old, these girls were going at it. And, there was a nip slip from Becky Lynch. That can’t be bad. Charlotte won the “new” WWE Women’s Championship and there’s no reason why that I can see. However, the match was good until the end.

Shane-O Mac vs. Undertaker. Shane pulled out all the stops and got a lot of “This is awesome” and “Holy Shite” chants from the record crowd. Doing an elbow drop off the top of the Hell in a Cell cage onto an empty table below (UT moved) was pretty awesome. I knew that UT was going to win but it was a heck of an effort from Shane.

I think I need to watch NXT more because someone I’d never heard of (Baron Corbin) won the Andre the Giant battle royal which saw Shaquille O’Neal compete. I think this will be the launching pad for Corbin to hit the main roster. It was an okay battle royal.

Impromptu match when The Rock came out to talk to the crowd about breaking the WWE record (101k people) when the Wyatt Family came out (no Luke Harper, though) and picked a fight. Rock beat Erik Rowan in six seconds. When the Wyatts surrounded the ring, John Cena showed up to help The Rock. They hugged. It was kind of cool.

Roman Reigns beat Triple H after a long grueling match. The intro, albeit cheesy, was kind of cool with Stephanie McMahon introducing Triple H like some goth princess. The crowd obviously hates Roman Reigns, although I don’t know why. He has a lot of work to do on his mic skills but his in-ring work, I think, is pretty good. He’s not been over since he took what the crowd thought should have been Daniel Bryan’s spotlight a year ago. That’s not his fault, it was the booking’s fault. No matter how hard the management tries to put Roman over, the crowd doesn’t go for it. We have to remember, though, the WWE Universe hated Rocky Maivia, too, and look where he ended up. I think maybe he’ll work eventually but right now, WWE is in a tight spot with him. They don’t really have any big names and I think that’s the overall problem. They have a lot of mid-carders that are vying for upper echelon but aren’t there, yet. All the big names are getting older and aren’t viable any longer. It’s a weird transition period for them. I hope they pull out of that soon.

Again, this WM was better than most PPVs they’ve put out in the last while. And the crowd? Usually WM is in huge arenas/stadiums and the crowd, by aesthetics, is eliminated from the equation because the venue is so large they just disappear. I was at the Georgia Dome for WM 27 and witnessed it. It’s hard to fill a venue that large with sound. But, this crowd (in AT&T Stadium/Jerry Dome in Dallas) was on fire and brought a lot. 3B and I had fun watching it. All. Day/Night. Long. Can’t wait to see what happens on Raw tonight.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or: The Less Desirables Movie of the Week

Salutations™!!

a/perture cinema, the Official Movie Sponsor of The Less Desirables, presents Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014), The Less Desirables Movie of the Week. It stars Megan Fox, Will Arnett and William Fitchner.

Per IMDb: “When a kingpin threatens New York City, a group of mutated turtle warriors must emerge from the shadows to protect their home.”

Ok, so let me say that there have been about 8 different versions of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles origin stories (that may or may not be an exaggeration). This is just the Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtles_film_July_2014_posterlatest. Each have their own merits but to me, the original movie in 1990 version as it was still in the height of the original series created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. This film actually gives a fairly faithful, canonical story about the turtles and Splinter’s origin as well as their connection to Shredder, albeit stylized for a more updated feel. Also, about each of the origin stories have different scenarios where Shredder is trying to rule the world.

Michael Bay produced this film so you can figure there’s actually a shload of CGI happening. In 1990, there were costumes that made the turtles look encumbered, although the actors within made it somewhat believable. The updated version has actors who can move more freely and allow the CGI to create a more fluid visual. I think it works. The voice actors, some of which are also the actors doing the motion capture work, are more free to move about in this film and the fluidity is remarkable. The special effects and CGI were handled by Disney’s (Lucasfilm’s) Industrial Light & Magic or ILM. So, the same outfit that brings you all the Star Wars Magic also brings it here.

I hate that there was no Casey Jones character in this one, although he will be in the sequel coming out later this year and I believe he will be played by television’s Arrow actor, Stephen Amell. Also, in that sequel the WWE Superstar, Sheamus (Stephen Ferrelly) will play Rocksteady. Megan Fox’s April O’Neal was a surprise to many of the “purists” out there and co-creater Laird though someone else would have been better but he wasn’t raising a stink about it. I thought she did an okay job but she’s no Judith Hoag (1990 version). William Fitchner’s character, Eric Sacks, was a great heel. Yes, Shredder (Tohoru Masamune) is the actual bad guy but he needs help in the civilian world and what better than a criminal businessman? Anything that Fitchner’s in, no matter how ‘good’ he seems he is always turns out to be the bad guy; he just has that look.

So, I’ve eluded the basic plot. It’s classic TMNT fare, really: Sacks and April’s father were lab partners who were working on a mutagen to cure disease and all the research was destroyed in a fire, that killed April’s dad. In reality, Sacks and Shredder along with his Foot Clan are trying to put a virus through the city and the Turtle’s blood is the key to the cure. So, why not unleash a virus on the city via a large radio tower in NYC then offer them the cure at a substantial price? Well, why not? That’s about the gist of the story.

Rotten Tomatoes rates it a a very lowly 21% Fresh with an Audience Score of only 52%. The critics offer up the following consensus: “Neither entertaining enough to recommend nor remarkably awful, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles may bear the distinction of being the dullest movie ever made about talking bipedal reptiles.” Ouch. IMDb has it at 5.9 stars out of 10. It’s obvious that it didn’t get  a great critical response but it made some money. I think the only thing that really saved it for me was the history and knowing where the show came from and seeing where it has the capability to go. Also, I thought the personalities of the turtles were funny and pretty accurate. Tony Shahloub as Splinter? What’s not funny about that? Anywhat! I saw this on Amazon Prime because it wasn’t available on Netflix at the time. Again, really, it’s not at all a great film. It’s not even really a good film unless you’re a fan of the TMNT canon and in that case, this will at least be better than the parts II and III from the 90s (c’mon… Secret of the Ooze?). I’m rating it at 3 stars because I can’t go higher on this and I don’t have the heart to go under.

Have you seen it? What do you think? Let me know. Give me some recommendations for future reviews!

Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, New England Patriots, NFL, Royal Rumble, Summer Slam, Survivor Series, WrestleMania, WWE

Salutations™!!

One of my guilty pleasures has always been professional wrestling. It’s one of the few things that my thirteen year-old son still does with me. Tonight is the Royal Rumble, one of the “big four” of the WWE PPVs. The Big Four are traditionally big money events and one of the original four big-named events (the others are Summer Slam, Survivor Series and the daddy of them all, WrestleMania), by pro wrestling’s largest name. That PPV WUvaF2WKstarts at 8pm.

It’s also, by odd coincidence, NFL Championship Weekend. The AFC (Patriots/Broncos) game starts at 3:05p ET and the NFC game (Cardinals/Panthers)starts at 6:40p ET. The “odd coincidence” is that usually WWE schedules their PPVs when nothing of extreme importance is going on, like championship games, awards ceremonies, etc. So, this is a big one (PPV) and it’s some of the biggest NFL games (right behind the Super Bowl). But, Royal Rumble is always in January and the scheduling of every thing is lining up to be just plain, well… Odd. So, my dilemma is to figure what to do. The one that matters to me the most is the late game (I’m pulling for the Cardinals, by the way). I’m sure I’ll watch the game because I don’t pay for the PPV (it’s free with WWE Network) and I can start it at the beginning. I’m also pretty sure there will be no school tomorrow, so it’s okay if 3B stays up late. On that, we’ll see, but that’s what I am thinking.

Are you a football fan or a wrestling fan? If you’re both, what would you do? Just wondering…

I Just Mondayed in My Pants or: Really? Really!?

Beer, Fan Interference, Monday, Monday Night Football, NFL, Rolling Stone Top 500 Albums, SM58, The Beer Dads, The Less Desirables, WWE

Salutations™!!

Yep, I just Mondayed in my pants. First I’m hoarse from singing yesterday, but that part is definitely not a bad thing. It’s just inconvenient. I got to live a lifelong dream. Basically, have my own backing band whilst singing the songs from KISS Alive! and Alive II albums, in their entirety! No, Dear Reader, that’s all good (and worth it).

I get to Ma ‘Rents’ office to do some reconciling (that’s a long story about Quickbooks being a pain in the arse) and I can’t find some of the statements to do the work. It turns out that they were lost in some other papers, but annoying just the same. I finished what I could of that so I could move on to more fun things like Fan Interference and The Beer Dads. Well, I get here and the hoarseness creates a little problem with the normal voice overs that I do – I do a sports show announcer’s voice, gruff and “sporty-bffb317a713512925b909e84ca5190f5“like – but I persevered. I made it. We go to call Wali, the co-host that we Skype with every week and the computer in the studio that is now dedicated to Skyping isn’t working. The keyboard won’t allow me to type anything out. I can’t type the password to open the computer to find out what is wrong. I just had this same problem fixed a few weeks ago. I’ve had this thing since early 2010 and it’s gotten a lot of use so it’s probably on its last legs.

So, we had to rig an SM58 (that’s a microphone) over TC’s Mac to do a Facetime call with Wali and record that way. The mic response was horrible, the sound quality of the recording was horrible and it was creating some interference which came into the recording. Probably one of the worst sounding ones I’ve done, ever. At least since 2010, when we started The Less Desirables.

I go to look up a phone number in my contacts and I have multiple entries for one person. So I don’t know which is the right one so I send a text to all of them hoping that one will return the person I’m looking for. That’s problematic and I’ve done it before, so I decided to go through and start cleaning the contacts list out. Now, of course this will take a while so I’m not going to sit and do that all day, I have work to do, but this will free up some craziness on this end. At least I hope it does.

Then as I’m about to settle in to write this post, clear up some contacts and throw on some music for the Rolling Stone Top 500 Albums of All Time, the landlord walks through with some bearded guy and they go behind the studio (into another room) and then there’s a bunch of knocking, hitting, scraping, pounding and other raw sounding noises coming from the other side of the wall where I’m sitting. It’s loud, it’s annoying. I go back to find out what they’re doing and they’re trying to scrape the threads of an old pipe that happens to be in an old abandoned bathroom back there. They have to cap it for something and the threads are rusted. Annoying. I’m starting to get a headache from all this mess and craziness.

I generally don’t mind Mondays. Lots of good things happen on Mondays. Two shows that I really like doing, WWE, Monday Night Football (when in season). All good stuff. Today is not my day. But, it is The Beer Dads night, so I have that (and the beer) to look forward to!

DOH! I just Mondayed in my pants, again.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Fantasy Football, NFL, Night of Champions, Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle Seahawks, Texas Pete Culinary Arts Festival, The BCPF, WWE

Salutations™!!

I know I’ve talked about the joys of football season finally coming back. Well, Saturday night, after The BCPF and I got home from a long and fantastic day/evening at the Texas Pete Culinary Arts Festival we turned on the Alabama/Ole Miss game which started remarkably late. I can’t figure out why they started so late, neither team is on the west coast, not even mountain time. Anywhat! We caught it just inside the second quarter. I’m not the greatest college football fan but like in the pros, I have teams that I hate for really no reason other than I just do. Two of those are Ohio State and Alabama (Michigan isn’t too far behind). So, I watched, salivating, because Alabama was losing. Not only were they losing but at one point, I’d say they were getting their collective arse handed to them. They only lost by six in the end but that was really “garbage time.”

Then Sunday came and I finally got to watch a full day of NFL. I didn’t get to see much last week because of obligations but I watched my Pittsburgh Steelers whip the San your-obsession-with-fantasy-football-has-your-wife-fantasizing-about-other-men-too-d652bFrancisco 49ers (one of those aforementioned teams that I absolutely can’t stand). Then we watched other games throughout the day. It’s extra interesting because, for the first time, The BCPF is participating in the Fantasy Football League with me and a bunch of friends. It’s competitive and she wants to win. I don’t know if I can remember her being this competitive over anything before. I like it though. She’s a spicy one. We sat beside each other and she kept her laptop on her lap and we watched, anxiously as the players did or did not do what they should to get us points. I’m quite happy with where my team sits this week. I am played out (meaning that all my players are done) for the week but she has a player playing tonight, as does her opponent. Here’s hoping that she gets a great deal of action from this Tight End. Her opponent has a Kicker playing. I hate the TE position for fantasy because generally, they’re the 3rd or 4th receiver in line. They’re hit or miss for points. But, she needs a good night from him.

The point of all that was, it was awesome to sit beside my wife (who has never been a football fan) and watch something that I feel so strongly about and her actually enjoy doing it with me. She has always sat beside me doing other things while I watch but, other than a Steelers game or Seahawks game (that’s her team if it weren’t for the Steelers; if she were going to pick one). It was a good Sunday. Finished it off by watching the Night of Champions PPV with The Boy, which truthfully, he slept through the whole thing. It was decent. Then watched the Packers/Seahawks game. Not the greatest outcome but was a good game. Great day, indeed.
