Salutations™!!

Today, I didn’t have studio time so my steps were truncated. I did get my morning walk in and went .5 miles. I actually walked a bit whilst talking to my pops. He actually drove down the driveway alongside me. I didn’t get winded. A lot of times, I can’t talk when with my friends or The BCPF because I’m so winded and labored. Not this morning.

It started raining a little later in the morning and it was useless to try and go out and walk. I did go up and down my steps in my house a few times so I got some steps and ended up with 4058. Short of my 6000/day goal, but under the circumstances, that’s still a good goal. And, it is certainly better than sitting on my tail all day. Tomorrow is probably going to be more rain so I have to figure out what to do. I have to keep the progress going.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

I come to you tonight, Dear Reader, with some incredible news. I also come to you with tired feet, legs, back and a slight bit of chaffing. Today, specifically this morning, I got up after not walking at all (with intent, that is) yesterday, and also to make up for the burger and fries I had the night before (I was on The Man Who Ate the Town duty), I decided I was going to do a little extra walking. I walked to Ma ‘Rents’ place (which is about 200 yards mostly uphill), around the upper- to lower- driveways and zigzagged my way back down the hill toward my house. When I got to my driveway, I walked the circle an extra five to six times until I reached .6 of a mile, which is .1 more than usual. I know that doesn’t sound like a lot, but every bit counts.

It’s actually at 10843 right now…

I came in and immediately took a shower. I had a client to publish a podcast for and a session for another coming at 9a. So, I got my Podcast Recording Gear together and went on to the studio. I was there about 810a. I set everything up and decided to myself, heck, I feel good, let me get some steps in. The parking lot at my studio is pretty large so I just walked the perimeter until I felt I had “done enough.” I checked my watch and it said I was at 1.4 miles so I said let’s go for two miles. I hit two miles at 856a. I felt really good about his. The kicker was, my session at 9a was Kristen Norton of Well Balanced Nutrition. I shared that with her, she was excited, as was her session partner, Eleanor Russell, a health advisor with Shaklee. We did their podcasts (three) with a stand-and-stretch session between them. After I walked them outside, I was like wow! It feels great out here today, let’s get some steps in!

My daily goal, as set by my watch, is 6000 steps. I haven’t hit that since I started this (and really haven’t hit that goal in a really long time). Well, waiting on the cleaning crew to come do my office, I went until I hit 6000 steps. I hit that at around 1127a. So, a text went out to The BCPF, Kristen, Eleanor, ma Mère and ma Père. Excitement abounds.

I started on my annual “Big Project” with DTWS Partnership and decided I was going to do something different with the videos this year. I was going to get real footage. So, I went to one of the winners, which happened to be in the same area as three of the other winners and shot actual video footage with my camcorder. I walked many a step, up steps, down steps, on hilly terrain, back-and-forth, and man… those steps wracked up.

Think back a few years, Dear Reader. Those of you who have been with me for a while know that in addition to The Man Who Ate the Town, I also did The Man Who Walked the Town and had a 10k (steps) by 10a (10am) goal on Saturdays. That was crazy but I did it. Since I got a new phone and smart watch my step count has gone down to 6000 steps which is still a lot. Well, after a long day of walking, filming, podcasting, walking, and walking… I decided I needed to grab some food and since I’m eating healthier, I went to Yamas Mediterranean Street Food because, well, they’re Yamas. Also, they have lots of good complex carbs like grains and lots of veggies. I purposely parked down the street and walked up to Yamas. Once I got inside the door, I looked at my watch. I was over 10k steps!!! I felt good!

In the session, Kristen asked me how I felt about walking this morning. I told her I felt f*****g phenomenal! I feel alive! I still did. I actually have a thing I do when I hit a walking goal that dates back to TMWWTT days and I do my Rocky Balboa pose (arms raised in a “Y”). I did that at 9a, 1130a and now at 615p hitting that goal. I am sore. I will feel it tonight and tomorrow, especially. But, I did it. Yo, The BCPF, I did it! (bad Sylvester Stallone imitation).

Until tomorrow, I’m going to bed…

Salutations™!!

Trey/3B

Today was a very Proud Papa moment. Today, my son, Trey (yes, 3B) and my nephew, Ryan, graduated from Providence Culinary Training. According to the website: Some who enroll in our culinary training program want to learn new skills and make new connections after a job loss. Some want to enhance their skills and pursue better-paying opportunities in the culinary field. Some want to fine-tune their knowledge to start a business. Some are simply seeking a fresh start. Everyone who enrolls is supported as an individual as they move through the Providence Culinary Training program and as they establish themselves after graduation.

Trey and Ryan actually finished his program late last year but C-19 kept the graduation from happening. They each went on to work at a few other places and Trey got hired at Providence full-time. He does catering, events and other things. But, he’s still getting a boatload of education from this.

As for the graduation, each class member (there were four classes with the number of students ranging from two to five) got to have one person attend. So, I was lucky enough to be his guest and my sister was Ryan’s guest. As part of the graduation, each student got a nice Chef’s knife set and a Providence cook book.

Ryan

Each class had a student that won the “Golden Cutting Board” which was for most outstanding student. Well, I’m going to just cut to it… Trey won the GCB for his class. I mean, was there any doubt? Not from me. He got up and spoke both during the graduation part and the GCB part.

The part that was really the surprise was when it was announced that Trey is actually in the Providence Residency Program. That means that he’s getting top-notch training in all aspects of the culinary industry for two years and getting paid for it. I asked him about it prior to the program’s commencement and he said he wasn’t, that he was just an employee.

Chef Jeff Bacon announced when one person was “graduating” from that program, that Trey was part of the residency and even said, “he thinks he’s just an employee.” It was a fantastic feeling.

Trey getting the Golden Cutting Board

Then it happened. Chef V (Vanessa, I don’t know her last name) who had “retired” from Providence this past month spoke and gave a moving speech. Afterward, I got to thank her for all she had done for all the students but especially my boy, my world. She talked about how he was her “right hand” and was able to almost predict what she was doing or needing. She said she told Chef Brian, who took her place, “make sure you take care of Trey.” She wished that he goes on to great things and that he has the talent and ability to be amazing. “He’s going to go very far.”

So, my “boy” that just three years ago I worried would never find their footing or direction, is doing manly things, not just here but in other situations that he had to deal with this week that I won’t speak of. He’s a mature, handsome, talented, and driven young man. I love this guy so much. So, yeah, Proud Papa, indeed.

And, on top of that, I walked 5663 steps (just 337 from my “goal”). That equates to 2.62 miles. Yay me!

Salutations™!!

Well, Dear Reader, today was the doctor’s appointment. The one I have obsessed over this week, on this blog. I braced myself for the diagnosis of pre-diabetes. And, what I said earlier this week was true: there are other factors and I’m no doctor and all that. It turns out that my glucose reading could have been something I had eaten or drunk the day or even days before my bloodwork was done. They weren’t at all concerned with that. My A1Cs were perfectly fine and that’s what counts toward diabetes. So, whew! on that, right?

©Tim Liedtke / Verywell

But, I’m not out of the woods, just yet. There were two factors that we had to talk about. My triglycerides are at 238. The standard range is 0-149. So, I’m well over that. The other thing is my weight. I am the heaviest I’ve ever been right now. I weighed in at 321. Three. Hundred. Twenty. One. Pounds. Jeez o’Pete. So, these are the focus, now. I don’t think my regiment will change.

When I told my doctor of the plan that Kristen Norton of Well Balanced Nutrition and I had agreed upon, the same schedule I talked about earlier this week, here, he was very excited and happy with it. A couple of things specifically. He loved the idea of limiting the majority of the simple carbs (the white bread, pizza crust, french fries, etc.) and introducing more complex carbs (brown rice, potatoes with skins, beans, etc.) and a cupped handful of veggies. He was also very high on the 12-hour fast and increasing it over time. I have been able to work with that this week. It’s not bad at all. Pretty easy. Yesterday alone I was over 14 hours, which I broke the fast with a small cobb salad and a cup of chili (with black beans!). Dinner last night had seafood, corn and potatoes with skins. Sure, I stole a couple of bites of The BCPF’s lobster tater tots but it wasn’t a whole meal.

The last thing the doc was happy about was how much I’ve walked already this week. Not necessarily the distance but the intensity and frequency. I promised him and the nurse that I was going to be under 300lbs the next time I stepped on that scale. So, I need to promise myself that too and somehow work in a streak. Streaks somehow keep me accountable and I guess that’s what I will have to do.

So, there you have it, Dear Reader. I just wanted to update you on how relieved I was to not be diabetic but also that I’m not out of the woods and I am working to a healthier me. Oh! And I was up at 645a and went for my walk before I did anything else. My watch didn’t record jack so I don’t know how many steps I got, but the graph shows me more than the day before. It was cold, y’all.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

I don’t do a lot of exercising although I really, really need to. Heck, we all need to. Last year, we had one of our rounds of Allan Younger’s Cast of the Charismatic Creative Club, or whatever I decide to call the “Launch Challenge” finalists when Allan brings them in from the Small Business Center to be on The Less Desirables. In one of those sessions, I met an amazing woman.

Liz Hronek

©Liz Hronek, Miss Fit Boss

Her name is Elizabeth Hronek, I may have talked about her on here before. Her business is Miss Fit Boss and she’s not just another “fitness guru” or yoga instructor or nutritionist and all that mess. Not that I’m discounting any of those fine folks; many are my friends. They do good and important work. I love them all and will do anything I can for them.

I can almost wager that none of them went from around 300 pounds to around 150, has been featured on several news channels/talk shows for that and graced the cover of People™ Magazine or other publications because of it. Liz has.

When Liz was on TLD she was telling her story and I was feeling the weight, not only my over 300lbs arse, but, the health, mental and wellness aspect that comes with being a large person. When she and I were talking, the rest of the room blurred like the vignette filter for photos, no one else existed at that moment as she and I stared into each other’s eyes.

Now, don’t think this is some romantic thing, that’s not what I mean. There was just a connection. A spark. A moving feeling. She “touched” me in the heart and mind. I told The BCPF about that and she was intrigued because I have no self-motivating and self-determinating gumption to do anything physical. I hate working out and I hate exercise and I hate anything where my adrenaline gets going. That sounds like I’m lazy, and yes, I am, but that’s not necessarily the reason for my sloth-like tendencies. The BCPF was intrigued because it at least sparked some kind of intrigue in me.

But, Liz and I talked. We talked about her journey. We talked about my woes, not only the weight but the motivation and, again, gumption. She and I talked via telephone a few days later to get a better grasp of my “situation.” She has been on me ever since, but while I’m always glad to get her, “how’s it going?” texts, I generally pass it off as, okay, there’s the check-in. I think that’s an exaggeration. I do “mean” to do something but today, she asked for her update and I said, “my walking is still down, healthier options are up (we have been eating better stuff at home and West End Poke and Yamas and good, cleaner food has been eaten all around), my awareness of what I’m eating is up. That’s a plus.”

Her reaction? “That’s what up!! How can I support you?”  That’s what I love about Liz, she wants to support her “people.” That’s how I look at my “people.” I want to support them any way I can. My response was, “just keep on me.”

From there we went into a conversation about me wanting to do stretches. I am so stiff, that even washing my body in the shower is difficult, even in the warm water. We talked about a schedule for that and, of course, I found excuses and reasons why I can’t do that, knowing if I really want to do it, I can. Then I said, “I am alone in the studio, I’m thinking now would be a good start.” Her: “Ok, what time are you going to do it?” Me: “Maybe right now.” Her: “Maybe?” Me: “Yeah, I’m fighting with myself. Plus, I don’t know what to do. Find some beginners’ stretches on YouTube?”

That was at least a start, right? Then she sent a graphic of “RESET STRETCH” with some low-impact but effective stretches that also included some sitting, which I do really well. I did all of those twice. And that felt good. I asked what she had for hips and legs and she sent another graphic with some leg stuff.

All-in-all, I did those for about 20 minutes, in both sets and rotation. I broke a sweat, which is good and ridiculous at the same time. I was winded, too.

In the studio, I put on some meditation music over the studio monitors and kept the main room dark. The only light was natural light from the studio and the light from my phone. I felt good. She asked what time I was going to do it tomorrow and that I needed to set an alarm on my phone. I should get up earlier and do it first thing, get moving. The BCPF agreed to get me up between her bike and yoga times for me to do that.

I went to New Sichuan and had dinner. Good food, peppers, pork and soup. I came home and instead of going straight for the couch, I decided to file away the “listened-to” stack of records that had gotten to a stack about 12 records deep. I was bending over and kneeling to put the records away. I sent Liz a text telling her of my accomplishment, minute as it may be, it was a big step to me, and I felt good. She sent back, “Yes!!! Now start a success journal and write it in there to remind you.”

I don’t know if I’m going to do that, but since I am not afraid of blogging, perhaps I’ll roll out an old favorite that I’ve ignored for a while and let that be my “journal?” I don’t know, we’ll see. But, if nothing else, this is a start.

All that said, I want to point out that she does this for a living and she is darn good at what she does. She’s motivational, sweet, and somewhat scary. She cares. Find out more by following her on social media as missfitboss, Elizabeth Hronek or by visiting her website.

She is not paying me to pump her up. I am giving this unsolicited endorsement because I believe in her as she believes in me. Liz, I cannot thank you enough. Here’s to more motivation.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

So, I went to have my ultrasound done today, my echo-cardiogram, and the good news is I’m not pregnant!  Um, wait wrong ultrasound. My heart, according to the technician, looked pretty good.  Now, that doesn’t mean much of anything because it has to be viewed by the cardiologist to be official. So the word is “officially” still out. But, all the extra salads, strawberries, blueberries, fish, etc. I’ve been eating in addition to trying to take extra steps in the day (stairs instead of elevator, walking to accessible places downtown instead of driving, etc.) must be paying off, at least as far as I can tell.

Now that that is out of the way, I’m going to move on to the other topic for today: Empty Bowls.  Empty Bowls is the big fundraising event of the year for Second Harvest Food Bank. I’m not going to spend a lot of time going into details about hunger, because really you should already know that there are families here in our community that are hungry. I don’t mean they just have a hankerin’, I mean that they take turns in the family eating. Maybe it’s the kids, Scotty and Sally today (yes, just once) and Mom and Dad tomorrow, or they’re the kids on the block that are not happy it’s the weekend and they’re out of school. At least in school they get breakfast and lunch of some kind. Dear Reader, there are people that are truly starving in our community, perhaps your next door neighbor.

Empty Bowls will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, April 22 from 11-2 and you can still get tickets (before 5pm 4/21/15) for $25 in advance by going to hungernwnc.org. Any tickets you buy will be held at Will Call. After 5pm, it’s $35 and you’ll have to purchase them at the door. It’s held at the Millennium Center in Downtown Winston-Salem. There will be shuttle service from the parking lot (First Presbyterian Church on Cherry/Marshall) to the Millennium Center. What do you get for your money?  One, you’re helping a great cause. Two, you get soup from awesome restaurants around town. Three, you get to take home a piece of art; a bowl made by local artisans. It’s a great cause and somehow I pulled off being called a “celebrity server.” I’m going to be a “Floor Ambassador” from 1030-1230 (until…) so I’ll be schmoozing people up whilst they enjoy the event. There are other community celebs, such as, Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines, Chad Nance of Camel City Dispatch, local TV personalities, food people, etc. Really, you shouldn’t miss it. You can read the write up I did for The Man Who Ate the Town: A Food Blog by clicking here.

So I hope to see you all out there. ALL of you! Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
Scorp out!
