Salutations™!!

Happy Super Bowl Sunday! The BCPF and I went to Penny Path yesterday to celebrate Imbolc (where pancakes are generally the tradition but we went with crêpes). Then we hit up our friend Carly’s shop, VibesUp Winston-Salem, then to Jim & Dana Moody’s West End Coffeehouse and grabbed some pies for today’s big game and we even saw Daniel Butner from Carrabba’s and Kandi and Lori from TBD/Pride WS. Then we headed to Underdog Records and grabbed just a few records. It was a full day of visiting. It was great and tiring all at once. Here’s the haul.

  • Depeche Mode – Exciter — I was excited to get this because, well, we love Depeche Mode in this house. But, really, while it was a good listen, it really didn’t thrill me. I didn’t hear anything that memorable. It is produced well, mixed well, written well. I just wasn’t moved by it. But, I’m glad I have it. New, remastered on 180g.
  • The Mountain Goats – Transcendental Youth — This album focuses on outcasts, recluses, the mentally ill, and others struggling in ordinary society. John Darnielle has a way with quirky, witty and funny lyrics (even if the subject matter isn’t always funny). It was a good listen. New.
  • Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – The Tourist — Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is a musical project started by Alec Ounsworth. This album was independently released and is on a cool white vinyl. The songs were really well-written and the sonic quality was fantastic. It was a fun listen. EX/VG++.
  • Montrose  – Montrose — This was entry #11 from the Eugeneology/Hard Rock albums I did a few years back. You can read my review here. I’m interested in seeing if my views of it have changed because while I didn’t dislike it, I didn’t exactly like it. And, I said I probably wouldn’t listen again, but here we are. We’ll see. VG+.

It was a short-haul this week. That’s all we got. Underdog Records was jumping yesterday. The store was full and both The BCPF and I had to wait to get to the “Freshly Acquired” section of the used records. That rarely happens. Did you know that Underdog Records has two listening stations in the downstairs part of the store? You can sit on a comfy couch either in a darker, more intimate setting or sit by the window watching the creatures of Burke Street/West End shuffle through. You can do that and listen to just about any used record in the place. Also, you can grab a complimentary cup of coffee and have it whilst listening or if you ask nicely – and are over the age of 21 – you can get a complimentary brew of alcoholic nature. Yesterday I had a Natty Bo, a National Bohemian. Not my favorite beer at all but what the heck. It wasn’t anything that said “Bud” on it. Jonathan wants his store to be welcoming and comfortable to all and I believe he nails it. Listen to each new episode of The Less Desirables to hear the TLD/UR special of the week. And, use Discogs to track your music collection, no matter the medium.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’ and GO CHIEFS!!…

Carly Sink, Podcast, Podcasting, Podcasts, PodernFamily, Vibes Up Winston-Salem

Salutations™!!

Yesterday I told you of a new podcast that I picked up. That will start production in late April and we will know more about the release once we’ve started that process. And, there will be more to come about that.

20190301_163604

My new hippie bracelet from Carly and VibesUp Winston-Salem

This morning, I got my new VibesUp bracelet from my friend Carly Sink who owns VibesUp Winston-Salem over off of Reynolda Road. I have had my other bracelet from her for over a year and never went a day without it. After a while, sweat starts building up and the thing doesn’t smell all minty-fresh like it used to.

The bracelets have crushed crystals, each designed to help certain aspects of your life. To keep you vibing because according to the website, high and low vibrations can’t coexist. So, this keeps your vibes elevated, hence… “up.” Yeah, I know this is some hippie-dippie, new age stuff. I am also not saying I necessarily believe in it. But, I’m also not saying I don’t.

Each bracelet is focused on certain attributes the one I had before said “I Am Balance” which means the crystals were a cocktail specifically for balance. I felt that the last year or so of my life I was balanced. I also noticed that my Tourette Syndrome wasn’t as pronounced whilst wearing it. So, whether it works or not, in my head, it works.

The new bracelet that Carly brought me this morning was for “abundance.” I have had friends who have worn the abundance bracelet and swear that the universe is on their side with abundance. Can’t we all use some of that? Mmmm hmmm heck yeah.

So, you’re wondering, or perhaps you’re really not, why I mentioned yesterday’s podcast score again? Well, today, I got another one. This one is still in the very preliminary stages and per usual, I will not talk about what it is or what it is about until it’s time for its release. I don’t want to jinx it and it’s not my place to blab about it until it is actually in existence.

Whether or not the bracelet had anything to do with this, the call was actually for something different, I don’t know. I don’t care. I just know the reason I wanted that one specifically is that it’s time I get my abundance on, y’all. Again, in my mind, it works.

Carly, thank you so much! And, you should go by and see her, Dear Reader. There’s much more to her shop than just bracelets. She has fashionable wearables, flip flops (with crystals), special water bottles, pads, essential oils, all kinds of things. And, when you’re in there, sit in the vibing chair. You’ll not move.

Until tomorrow, I am Abundance…

Salutations™!!

You know earlier in the week when I said I was prepping for a busy 2019 and that it was going to be good? Well, it’s well on its way and I am definitely experiencing that busy-ness in my business. Had to figure out how to make that phrase work, I guess I did it right. Right?

Anyway, whether it’s personal business, business business or monkey business, I have it and am getting more of it. Yay! I look very much forward to that, too! I’ll be pulling more studio time and more VO time, it looks like, which is good, too. I like money. I like to make it. I would like to make more of it (who wouldn’t?). And, I’m going to do just that! Dang it!

One thing that will help me do that better is my network of people.

Sure, I have my regular “network” of folks but I actually have a bona fide network at my disposal. 20+ personal account managers/business locators that work “for me” and I for them. I may have mentioned this before, and I know I have on The Less Desirables, but I am in one of those “referral groups.” But, this is not like most referral groups. This is The Best Damn Referral Group. I’m not just looking for a reason to cuss, either. It is what we call it. The Best Damn Referral Group or “TBD Referral Group” or just plain “TBD.”

Now, on this podcast when I say TBD that usually is my lazy speak for The Beer Dads, but today, it’s not. We are 20-30 business-like-minded folks who not only refer business but we are friends family. This just works.

Think about it. We all know people that do stuff, right? We know that “computer guy” or “yoga instructor” or “insurance guy” or “person that makes crocheted thingies,” right? But, if someone mentions to you that they’re needing a service, most likely you’ll just say, “I’ll keep an ear out for that.” And, chances are, you’ll not think of it again until your friend either mentions still needing that something or they complain that it “cost this or that.” It happens all the time.

But, if you have a friend, a real friend that does something for a living, you’re going to refer that person to your friend-in-need first, right? You know you will.

If I hear someone say they need a website done, I have the person, Ray Mitchell at SixFour Web Design.

If you need an application or software developer, I have Josh Schuminsky with Solutions Afoot.

Have a wellness problem like you’ve constantly got colds or aches and pains? How about some elemental help with Carly Sink at Vibes Up! or supplements from Linda McDermott with Shaklee, or aromatherapy with Melissa Curran at Scented Balance or plant-based foods and diet structures from Sha’retha Davis aka Happie Food, yoga with Shakira Bethea and Train to Relax, massage therapy from Beth Blair at Seamless Living NC? Need to talk over your worries? I have Michele Hannah. Or Timmy VO/BeYou360/Tim Johnson for personal training needs. I mean, I have my own wellness collective, right there!

Have a presentation or job opportunity but you’re not sure if your regional or southern accent will be understood? I have Margaret Morris at Triad Speech Consultants to help you work that out.

There’s a computer problem? Yo! CATS (or Computer and Technology Solutions) with Kandi Villano and Lori Noel can solve it.

Have too much debt or need financial help? Corey Hodges at Fortified Futures and Donnie Stiles at Edward Jones can help you get on the right track. Insurance? Corey can help with that, too or Jim Annas and his Nationwide (soon to be something else) group can help.

I used to be a travel agent, remember? Well, I’m not, but people still come to me. The first thing I tell them? Go to Ed Dean with Cruise Planners.

Have a drab and listless office and you’re needing a touch-up? Kelly Holcomb at River’s Edge is there for you.

Need a cool little gift for a loved one or even for yourself? Try a crocheted piece of sunshine with Whitney Morgan’s Whit’s Whimsies. Her husband, Ray is my co-host on The Man Who Ate the Town podcast but he also is working to get into a ministry and he dedicates a lot of time volunteering and if you need a place to get rid of that overflowing coat closet’s lost and lonely treasures, he volunteers for the Shalom Project of Winston-Salem. And speaking of places to do volunteering or look for work-training for less fortunate folks, Tempy Albright at Goodwill is your person.

Here ya go, this one’s a bit different. You have recyclables or even non-recyclables that you’re looking to get rid of? I mean like cups, paper and things like that? Want to be part of a cool little project? How about stop-motion animation? Or puppetry? Puppetry is cool. My pal Flannery Holton has Alley Cat Studio and does just that… well, and a lot more. He does some 3D printing as well. He, Timmy VO, Ray Morgan and I could sit around a table and do voices for projects. Or for fun. That would be cool.

This one is particularly for the ladies that read my blog. When you walk at night, be it from a store to your car, the stroll with your four-legged friends or just being out, you want to feel safe and secure, right? Sometimes owning or purchasing a gun isn’t the right solution for you. I have my friend Heather Sherer who is starting her own Damsel in Defense-affiliated business and will be able to equip you with implements of self-defense-destruction!

Dealing with a family matter or even light-criminally leaning issues in your family? Need an attorney who will help work out wills, agreements, adoption and other legal things? Denise M Gold is your person.

Buying a house can be a daunting task or a scary proposition. Lorraine Howard at Blue Door Group (at Wilkinson ERA) can find homes of all types for her clients. She is very accessible and takes a lot of the “pain” out of “painstaking” house hunting. Have a loved one that is getting up in their years and need to start looking to downsize their stuff in their life? Well, Lorraine can help find a house but in case they’re older and looking to get moved to a new facility, home or otherwise, then Jen Hammon at Monarch Living can help make the transition a lot easier on the families.

You hear me talking about the awesome work that Nate Geipel at X1 Communications does with their “beamed” high-speed internet. But, it never is too much because the internet is lightning fast and reliable.

Okay, so you need a headshot or action shot or whatever kind of photo in your business social media or just because you think it’s cool? Stallone Frazier Photography and Graphic Design is the main man! He did TMWATT’s new logo, too. Great work. Need that new logo or picture on a t-shirt or banner? Well, Janice Schmitz does t-shirts with her biz, Ink It Promotional Products and David Stanley does banners and signage at Image360. Yes, I have my own printing specialists but as Machine Gun Graphics (my folks) and Janice and David all say, there’s enough biz to go around. Plus, I’ve given introductions to all of them so, full disclosure, there.

Did you just start a new business and want to make sure that you have or are using all the right tools you need for your business to survive? Not just get started and flounder? Jason Berry is a business coach at Action Coach and will be starting his own franchise soon.

Yes, I know this post turned into one big promotional push for this group but I truly believe in each and every one of them and think that referring their businesses is part of my duty as a colleague, as an associate, as a friend. I wouldn’t refer any of them if I didn’t think they had the skill, talent, determination, dexterity, competency or faculty for the business that I send them. And them me. I have to be on my best attention and business mindset for when they have someone in need of what I do.

I get excited to help them procure business for their own enterprises.

But, as I said, they’re not my business contacts. I don’t think of them like that. I don’t see them as networking folks. They may be those things and may just be that to others, but to me, they’re my friends. They are my family. I dig them the most! I love them. I said it.

And, if you are looking for a stuffy referral group where you sit quietly while people beg you for business and expect you to give it to them, this isn’t that. Far, far from it. This group is alive! This group comes with their hand ready to shake, not take (thanks Ray!).

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

You know, Dear Reader, I have clout. That’s a funny word, “clout.” Not Klout, the social media analytics tool that measures your social media importance. I mean real clout. According to one dictionary’s definition, clout is “influence or power, especially in politics or business.” how-to-shop-local-winston-salem

Now, I’m not bragging on that, that’s a heavy cross to bear, but I know people, people know me. I speak about things, I write a somewhat influential food blog/podcast. People tell me things so I can tell others. That has been built up from The Less Desirables to my time producing/co-hosting Sipping NC, my writings, and so on.

My point, again, is not to brag. My point is people entrust me with information with the intention of spreading it around. With this, I will admit that I get a lot of concessions. I get some “freebies.” I get invited to things because of this “clout.”

Many of the things that I “push” are things that are provided by sponsors of one of my podcasts. I understand that. You understand that. I make no bones about the “official sponsors” that I promote or advertise. Those things are posted about are things that are bartered, traded, gifted or whatever. But, they get that all the time and I will absolutely continue to do that, in abundance.

But, there are a lot of companies out there that are worthy of talking about, even beyond my sponsors or trade partners. These local businesses need to be noticed, need your support and need to be on your “must stop” list.

A Daisy a Day Florists, Airtype, Alma Mexicana, Bookmarks, Brookstown Inn, Camel City BBQ Factory, Mr. Barbecue, Sally Gupton Photography, West End Coffee House, Camino Bakery, Jeffrey Adams, Hutch & Harris, Fearless WS, Footnote, Camel Pawn Shop, Alkali Hair Studio, West End Cafe, Computer and Technology Services (CATS), Fortified Futures, Vibes Up Winston-Salem, River’s Edge, Seamless Living, Dr. Renea’s, Happie Food, Image360, Ink It Promotional Products, Train to Relex Yoga, The Breathing Room, The Porch, The Olio, The Tin Can, BeYou360, TimmyVO, Ed Dean with Cruise Planners, Solutions Afoot, SixFour Web Design, Stallone Frazier Photography, SunnySide Mercantile, Twin City Hive, Black Mountain Chocolate, Sunshine Beverage, Broad Branch Distillery, The Ramkat, Earl’s WS, Wise Man Brewing, Fiddlin’ Fish, Triad Speech Consultants, Crafted The Art of the Taco, Reboot, Dogwood Hops & Crops and The Trophy Room, Sweet Aromaz, The Flour Box, The Tavern at Old Salem, Cowboy Brazilian Steakhouse, Krankies, Fair Witness, a/perture cinema, Sweet Potatoes, Rec Billiards, Mozelle’s Southern Bistro, Campus Gas, ANY of the artists’ shops or galleries on Trade Street, Ronnie’s Country Store, Monstercade, Southside Beer Garden, Old Winston Social Club, Burke Street Pizza, Uncle Buzzy’s, Cin Cin’s, The Quiet Pint, May Way Dumplings, Penny Path Cafe, Cafe Arthurs, Stell Brew, The B-String, Hair Bomb, Coffee Park (all locations) and many, many more.

The point is, all of these businesses are locally owned (and/or operated) and deserve some love. Sure, I take pride in my sponsors and will do everything to promote them, not just because they’re my sponsors but because they have supported me. I’m not going to mention any of them in this post because, for this post, it’s completely unsolicited recommendations. Every one of these businesses is run by local folks who care about their customers and deserve your attention. Not one of these businesses asked me to say anything. I just think this is the weekend and Christmas is coming up. Gift certificates, stocking stuffers, trinkets, dinners, lunches, beers, spirits. Each one of them can help you fulfill your needs and you’ll help keep them in business. I don’t usually say please, but please show them some love and support. They deserve it.

Until tomorrow, when you may see me in a few of these businesses…

Salutations™!!

First off, I want to say “happy father’s day” to all the dads out there, whether they’re dads, step-dads, furry kids’ dads, father figures, all of you. My life would be nothing like it is without my own Ma Père and I’ll get to see him in a few hours. He made me the man I am today, even if it took a while for me to catch on. Thanks, Dad. 15965375_10154740755025490_3295274378463804499_n

We went to Mary’s Gourmet Diner first and then to Underdog Records. We took a detour and went to Vibes Up Winston-Salem and talked with my friend Carly Sink about crystals and other hippy stuff. I say that with complete love because I love hippies, heck I married one. Back home to hear some of our spoils and then to Willows Bistro. Here’s our very short, but rewarding haul!

  • Pavement – Slanted And Enchanted – #135 on the RS list, which boggles my mind. I’m not saying it’s not deserving of the list but jeez o’pete, this can’t be that high on the list. It could be back in the 300s or something but 135? Nah. It’s The BCPF’s favorite Pavement album which contains her favorite Pavement song, “Summer Babe (Winter Version).” New.
  • Iggy Pop – TV Eye 1977 Live – It’s Iggy, a New Wave/punk icon, and The BCPF loves that stuff, so she wanted this and who am I to say no? VG+.
  • Pink Floyd – Ummagumma – A really rough version of this 2xLP but it’s still a good listen. I really enjoy record 2 best with all the members doing their own compositions. I mean who doesn’t like “Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict?” The album is graded as VG-. I think that’s generous, but that’s what I’ll go with.
  • Jethro Tull – War Child – “Bungle in the Jungle” is on this one. I don’t completely get Jethro Tull but I am not against it, either, so I figured why not? VG++.
  • Graham Parker And The Rumour – Squeezing Out Sparks – #334 on the RS list. Why not just switch the two we got this haul and I’d be okay with that. This should have been 135 and the Pavement album 334. I’m just sayin’. But, this was a great record, I enjoyed all of it! It was a $1 bin find but I think that was because the cover was a bit chewed up. The vinyl was VG/VG+, not a skip nor crackle.

That was it. Just five this week. Funds are tight and we have a trip to Boston to save for, so that was the dealio. Jonathan is taking in a lot of used stuff but he’s awaiting final approval on his offers. When that happens a lot of fresh used stuff will be coming in. Keep an eye on Underdog Records’ social media to find out what! Also, they post about new releases as well. And don’t forget to listen to The Less Desirables to hear the TLD/Underdog special of the week!

Discogs recently updated their Android app and I couldn’t be more pleased with it. It’s UI is great and aesthetically pleasing. It does all I want it to do in my collecting and allows me marketplace access and a randomizer to do random grabs. Check it out and start collecting.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
