Salutations™!!

Yesterday was 3B’s birthday and I got to text with him but not talk with him. But, he was working. The BCPF and I went to Underdog Records, to eat, the grocery store and to eat. But in between all that we listened to a few records, too. Here’s our haul”

©Mute

New Order – Education Entertainment Recreation — 3×LP, 180 gram Box Set. Recorded live at Alexandra Palace, London, November 9, 2018. Their only UK show of 2018. 3LP on 180 gram heavyweight vinyl. Housed in outer, side-pocket cover. Each vinyl issued in record cover (bearing “new order live at alexandra palace”) with slip sleeve, and includes a tri-fold insert. It was pricey but I wanted it, so… I got it. New.

Paul & Linda McCartney – Ram — Limited Edition, Reissue, Remastered, Stereo, 180g, Gatefold. It really only had one single in the US and that was “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey.” Mastered At Abbey Road Studios – Half Speed Mastering. 50th anniversary release (that anniversary is tomorrow). New.

Simon & Garfunkel – Sounds Of Silence — Somehow we didn’t have this. We have overlooked it often just because we thought we had it. We didn’t. We do now. New.

Crosby, Stills & Nash – CSN — This we did have, twice but neither were in great shape. This is a then-still-sealed copy that we promptly opened and listened. Reissue, Remastered, Repress, 180 Gram from 2018. New/NM.

Walt Disney Records – Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection Sampler — You know I love me some Disney. From Discogs: Walt Disney Records: The Legacy Collection is an exclusive line of musical releases that celebrates the milestone anniversaries of twelve of Disney’s most beloved original soundtracks. Each elegantly packaged title contains beautiful artwork and liner notes that tell the story behind the music. This sampler includes a small taste of the musical treasures that have made these soundtracks some of the most cherished of all time. Make sure to add all of the Legacy Collection titles to your Disney collection of music! NM.

Emo Philips – E=MO² — I have no clue what this is. I just know I like Emo Philips. We’ll see. EX.

Tina Turner – Private Dancer — The newly named Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Tina Turner’s biggest album and somehow I didn’t have it. Earlier this week we had the Brothers In Arms anniversary from Dire Straits and from that I played a cover of “Your Latest Trick” which was about a prostitute (or at least people who prostitute themselves). On this album, there’s “Private Dancer,” the title track that was also written by Mark Knopfler. I just find that interesting. EX.

Underdog Records always has great things to find to bring home to have a listening party, either alone or with a group (being socially mindful, that is). Underdog is open Wednesday-Saturday and you can purchased new vinyl 24/7 by visiting the Underdog Records website. Record Store Day is in June and July you can see the drops lists by visiting that website. I use Discogs to track my collection. You should, too.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Salutations™!!

Today is the 36th anniversary of Tina Turner’s Private Dancer album. There was a lot I could have played from this album but I went with this. The singer in this video kind of seems like she’s a bit burnt out. I don’t know, but it’s entertaining. Enjoy!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

The first Underdog Records purchase of 2019, woot! It’s going to be a good year all around and it’s going to be a good record year, too. I want to continue to fill my RS list wants and discover things that I didn’t know existed. I’m going to attempt to listen to more new music, but it really isn’t my bag. Anywhat! Here’s the haul:

  • Pink Floyd – Obscured By Clouds — I had made a post on this blog a few weeks back about this album. How great it was and how I was disappointed that no one had brought it to my attention prior. It was there and I grabbed it. This is the remastered reissue, new. It is a great album!
  • The Clash – Combat Rock — The “Should I Stay or Should I Go” and “Rock the Casbah” album. First pressing in EX/VG++ condition. I couldn’t pass that up.
  • Scorpions – Best Of Scorpions — Jonathan said, “yes and yes” when I brought this album up to the counter. He said that old Scorpions are under-appreciated and I nodded in agreement. The Scorps (no relation to me) have been around in some form or fashion since 1965 and most people don’t know that. So they had stuff that predates the “Rock You Like a Hurricane” era. This is in VG.
  • Mass Gothic – I’ve Tortured You Long Enough — promo copy of this album, it has no official cover but it’s from Sub Pop Records and it’s everything you’d think an album on that label would be. Which means that The BCPF loved it. VG++.
  • Charlie Parker And His Orchestra – Night And Day — The BCPF grabbed this one and I’m not really sure why. She usually avoids the more horn musicians. But, I dig them, so I’m glad she did. VG-.
  • Various – Midnight Cowboy (Original Motion Picture Score) — I like soundtracks and this was from the only X-Rated film to win Best Picture and first gay-related Best Picture. Also, it has Harry Nilsson’s “Everybody’s Talkin’,” which I love. VG+.
  • Black Sabbath – Technical Ecstasy — The penultimate Ozzy Sabbath record. He was blitzed most of the time and spent a lot of that time on the beach in Miami whilst Tommy Iommi was left to produce the album. It was recorded at the same studio as the Eagles’ Hotel California was being recorded at the same time. Geezer Butler said that they’d have to go in and scrape the residual cocaine off the mixing board after the Eagles left. VG-.
  • The Who – Who’s Next — I already have this album, but I believe this is a better copy than what I have. VG.
  • Linda Ronstadt – Hand Sown… Home Grown — Ronstadt’s debut solo album after leaving the Stone Poneys. It flopped but we like her so it was a good one to get. VG+.
  • Tina Turner – Private Dancer — The “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” “Better Be Good To Me” and “Private Dancer” album. I didn’t know that the title track was written by Mark Knopfler, but it does make sense now that I’ve listened to other Dire Straits albums. Ode to oneself and lamenting about the role that they’re the lot of. Plus, it’s an 80s staple and we know I’m a sucker for that stuff. VG+.

The rest are $1 albums and unless otherwise noted, they’re at least VG.

  • Carpenters – Now & Then — 3-way gatefold cover that shows Richard and Karen driving by the house they bought for their parents.
  • Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Brain Salad Surgery — I love the H.R. Geiger cover, which was somewhat an inspiration for the film Alien. “Karn Evil 9” is one of their better-known songs but it’s a long one.
  • Suzanne Vega – Solitude Standing — “Luka” and “Tom’s Diner.” Nuff said.
  • Various – How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying (The Original Broadway Cast Recording) — I like my “original Broadway cast recordings.”
  • Ian Hunter – You’re Never Alone With A Schizophrenic — I like Mott the Hoople and some of his other solo stuff so let’s give it a try. Plus, it’s a great album title.
  • Carly Simon – Carly Simon — The debut album by Simon, it was produced by Eddie Kramer who produced both Alive! and Alive II by KISS.
  • The Moody Blues – Seventh Sojourn — The eighth album by the band and had “I’m Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)” on it.
  • Various – An Officer And A Gentleman – Soundtrack — Again, soundtrack. The 80s. Cocker. Warnes.
  • Joni Mitchell – Song To A Seagull — Three major female voices of the 60s/70s and three debuts in one haul. That’s pretty impressive. This was Joni’s debut album.

Jonathan had a lot of “fresh” stuff that he was going through yesterday which only means you’re going to have a lot to choose from. Now, something new for 2019 that Jonathan is doing is called “Curated by Underdog” which is a subscription service that you can have Jonathan (and I’m sure his trusted associates) curate your collection with criteria of your choosing. Like only indie things? Like 80s music? Only want new records? Only want used records? Want a combo of the two? Well, Jonathan and Underdog Records have you covered. You’ll receive your subscription either monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly. The lowest cost package comes in at just $12. I think that’s a pretty good deal. It’s also a way to find things you may not have thought about. For more information visit the Curated by Underdog site. Also, listen to each episode of The Less Desirables to find out what that week’s TLD/UR special is.

Curated by Underdog and I both use Discogs. Underdog to help create and manage your subscription and me to make sure that I don’t get multiples of things. It also has a cool “shuffle” feature that picks a random album (upon your request).

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

The selection last week was a good one. Again, not my favorite of Cheap Trick’s catalog, but still a good one. I talked with both Eugene and Jon about it this week. They’re going to try to catch up by the end of the year. I think they can do it! Listening isn’t the problem. Writing takes the most time. Oh well, speaking of writing, how about I just get on with it?

#36 – Desolation Boulevard by The Sweet.

Are you ready, Steve? Andy? Mick? Dear Reader? Well, alright, fellas… Let’s go!!! I have known, really, four songs from (The) Sweet: “Ballroom Blitz,” “Fox on the Run,” “Little Willy,” and “Love Is Like Oxygen.” Two of those tunes are on this album. The drummer from Heavens Sake was a big fan of the band and I have a greatest hits album by them because of him. So, yeah, I know of other songs, but those were the ones I listened to without skipping.

The caveat here is that this wasn’t what Eugene wanted to include in the list. It just so happened that this is really the only thing that is readily available on streaming services by the band. He felt like the band needed to be represented on the list and this is what we get. I tell you, Dear Reader, I couldn’t be happier with it. If this isn’t their best, then I have to hear the “best.”

I had never heard of “Ballroom Blitz” before Wayne’s World in 1992. Yeah, I was sheltered, I guess. I loved Tia Carrere’s version and when I first heard the Sweet version, I thought it was silly. Brian Connolly’s intro was weak and so “glam.” But, now, it’s not weak, nor is it silly. It’s very timely for when it was released and fits the entire image of that band. Because they were “glam.” They glammed pretty darn hard, actually. And, here’s the thing, “Ballroom Blitz” wasn’t really supposed to be on this album.

There were two versions of the album. There was the UK/European release on RCA Records (1974) and the US/Canada/Japan version on Capitol Records (1975), which is what we’re talking about today. The “original” UK/Euro version, considered by many as the version, didn’t have “Ballroom” and included the original version of “Fox on the Run” as well as most of the songs being written by the band. The Capital version, however, was comprised of five of the ten tunes written by the songwriting team of Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn (who also co-produced the album) in addition to some of the material brought from the previous Sweet album, Sweet Fanny Adams (where the song “Sweet F.A. comes from). Now, what does that mean? Not much, but I just found it interesting. Chapman and Chinn, by the way, wrote a slew of hit songs that you’d be familiar with (“Mickey” from Tony Basil, “Kiss You All Over” by Exile, “Better Be Good to Me” from Tina Turner, etc.) either together or separately. Looking through the early Sweet catalog, the whole thing is a bit confusing as to what they were actually doing. Just like The Beatles with their UK vs US albums. Confusing, I say. But, I digress…

The musicianship on this album is amazing. Brian Connolly’s vocals are the “sound” of Sweet. His range is pretty wide and he’s powerful. Reminds me of Robin Zander in a lot of places. Or should I say it reminds me of what Robin Zander sounded like a few years after this? Not just his vocals but the awesome harmonies that riddle each song from all four members. That is the Sweet sound.

Andy Scott is a riff-mastering axe slinger. This use of the whammy bar, the speedy licks, the power chord madness and boxy tone is classic Sweet. I’m surprised more people don’t talk about his playing. He is also the lead singer of “Into the Night,” which he also was the lone songwriting credit.

Drummer Mick Tucker is dynamic and makes it sound effortless. Whether he’s pounding the skins or lying low with a subtle but effective march beat, he’s throwing it down and you may not even realize you’re being pelted with drumming excellence. He switches back and forth between double time and standard with very little effort.

Steve Priest’s bass work is anything shy of rudimentary and is driving. His runs are amazing and I can hear an influence, perhaps, on Steve Harris from Iron Maiden here. Not necessarily the galloping aspects of Harris’ playing but the mindset. This is especially true on “Sweet F.A.” And, Priest is the lead vocals for my absolute favorite song on the album, “No You Don’t.” I just love the tone of his voice and the melody line. It’s great!

The album is almost 44 minutes long but it goes by much quicker than that. Even with two songs coming in at five minutes plus, it zings right through. I listened to this album 12 times from last Thursday through today (three times today) and I love it. I’ll look for it on LP. To say I’m a fan of it would be a massive understatement.

Whilst I believe all the songs are great, my top faves are: “The Six Teens,” “A.C.D.C.,” “I Wanna Be Committed,” “Solid Gold Brass” and my aforementioned absolute favorite, “No You Don’t.”

Eugene, I loved this album and thank you for introducing us. I can’t wait to hear your review of this, and I really, really want to hear Jon’s. I am thinking this may be a good one for him, but then again, he’s hard to read. To you, Dear Reader, you need to hear this album. You need to own this album.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
