Yesterday was a good music day. I was still on a high from the night before when I participated with the Vagabond Saints Society doing the music of The Cars at The Ramkat. Then, The BCPF and I went to Underdog Records and had a full day of music intake. We have listened to the whole of our haul from yesterday by now as we listen to the last entry in this post whilst I am writing it. Here’s the haul:

  • Dr. John, The Night Tripper – Gris-Gris — Mac Rebennack wanted to do something with his character, Dr. John, the Night Tripper. It was an elaborate story he was making and wanted others to help him, even trying to get someone else to be “Dr. John.” But, he ended up doing it and highlighting a lot of the good – and probably some bad – of the voodoo/New Orleans culture. This was his debut album and it sits at #143 on the RS List. It’s weird and wicked but cool. Unfortunately, we lost Mac last month. New.
  • Weezer – Weezer — This is Weezer’s cover album and these covers are bad arse! To name a few of the covers, “Africa,” “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” “Take On Me,” “Paranoid,” “Mr. Blue Sky,” and “No Scrubs.” It’s awesome. New.
  • Kate Bush – Lionheart — Hella talent here. But, man, she is somewhat cuckoo, at least as she purveys it. Great voice. I was tired after listening to this because of the ups and downs. VG++.
  • Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest — The BCPF said she knew it would be right up her alley but she wasn’t too familiar with this. It was psychedelic, experimental and trippy but had some hints of Jeff Buckley in there, too. It was a great listen. VG.
  • Ella Fitzgerald – Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie! — Original mono pressing. I can’t emphasize how much we both love Ella. She was so amazing. Her voice like silk. Neither of us care for most of the “scatting” but it wasn’t too prevalent on this album. But, there is plenty of greatness on it. It’s a bit scratchy but still a good listen. VG-.
  • John Barry – Out Of Africa (Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack) — I love John Barry’s work. From James Bond to Somewhere in Time to, well, this, and beyond. This incorporates a little bit of Mozart, but it’s a beautiful collection of music. From what I remember, I liked the movie, too. VG++.
  • Damien Jurado – Live At Landlocked — I believe, from the cover photo, Landlocked is a record/music store. The BCPF was all over this but I have to say, whilst I liked Damien’s commentary and explanations. Once he started singing it was like he only hit four notes on-key. I didn’t really care for it, but again, I’m pretty sure she did. And, that’s all that matters, right? VG-.
  • Various – Ruthless People (The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) — I love soundtracks, but I have to say I didn’t really care for this one. I actually like most of the artists on the album but these songs were not that good. VG+.
  • Mendelssohn, Erich Leinsdorf, Boston Symphony Orchestra– Incidental Music To A Midsummer Night’s Dream — $1 bin find. It’s in great shape and sounds amazing. The BCPF doesn’t care much about the narration, but I think it’s cool. I like it. Great pieces of music, here, too. VG+.

This week, Bethany, my co-host on The Less Desirables purchased a turntable from Jonathan at Underdog. She posted that she was playing Van Morrison and had some Fleetwood Mac. I know she has like 10 Olivia Newton-John albums, so Top Leaf Cigar Lounge will be rocking! Speaking of TLD, listen to each new episode to hear the TLD/UR special of the week. And, use Discogs to catalog your collection and use that shaking feature (shake your phone) to select a “random grab.”

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Last night was a fantastic night. I loved playing with my VSS brothers (and sister) doing the songs of The Cars at The Ramkat. This is one of the two I did and whilst I did look for a good cover… I really must play from the master himself, Ben Orr and the Cars doing their thing.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

I was going to tell you that you should come and see me at my booth tomorrow for the Industry Hill Block Party that is happening on 9th Street. Well, I won’t be there. The rain or potential for said rain is keeping the outdoor booths and vendors from happening. The things that were going to go on inside Ramkat, Wiseman Brewing or Winston Junction Market will still happen and some of the bigger things like the main stage, panel discussions and such will move inside, as well. 59832692_2453552568030671_3895484450699476992_n

Here is the official statement for the block party, per Mixxer the organizers of the event:

We have made some changes to this event, due to expected thunderstorms all day tomorrow. We have cancelled [sic] the outdoor portion of the event along 9th St., and Krankies Craft Fair at Mixxer is relocating to The Ramkat. We have moved the panel discussions inside Mixxer. At 1pm we’ll hold a discussion on “The Future of Industry Hill” and at 3pm we’ll have a panel about “Entrepreneurship in Winston-Salem.”

WS Ambassadors 2nd Saturdays is still on, Wherehouse Art Hotel Art Mart will be going strong, and Winston Junction Market will be going from 11am.

The weather isn’t cooperating, but we’re gonna have a great time nonetheless. Please share our posts this evening to help spread word of changes.

So there will still be awesome things and you should go by there! Stay dry. Have fun.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

It’s the end of the month and the end of the quarter. That means that funds are a bit tight. Our haul is very short this week, but we have a vast back catalog of recent arrivals that we went through. The sun was out, Underdog Records had their $1 albums outside, the day was great. Perhaps we’ll do some yard sitting today. I wish we could take the turntable out there. Oh well, Alexa will have to do. Here’s the haul:

  • Strand Of Oaks – Eraserland — In my never-ending quest to find music that will please The BCPF (and show that I pay attention), I usually come across good candidates when I’m doing the commercial for Underdog Records. This is one of those. It’s 2xLP clear vinyl and Side 4 is one long experiment which I don’t think I’d call a song, but those first three sides are great! New.
  • Vienna State Opera Orchestra, Paul Angerer – A Bouquet of Old Vienna Dances — $1 bin find. VG/VG+.
  • Various – The Romance of Italy — $1 bin find. VG.
  • The Dave Clark Five – The Dave Clark Five’s Greatest Hits — I bought this because of “Anyway You Want It” which KISS covered for the fourth side of Alive II. It’s a $1 bin find and it’s pretty beaten up. I won’t give it over G+.
  • Nat King Cole – This Is Nat “King” Cole — The BCPF found this in the $1 bin. It too is beaten up but not as bad as the DC5. VG/VG-.

That’s a short week. Jonathan will be at Gas Hill Drinking Room at the Ramkat this Thursday, 3/28 for BYOV. I really don’t know if there are themes every month, but this week, it’s 90’s Appreciation Day. Go by and take a few of your favorite 90s album and get in the queue, have a great beverage and enjoy the community that accompanies good vinyl listening parties. Speaking of listening, listen to each episode of The Less Desirables and hear what the TLD/UR special of the week is.

I use Discogs to catalog, track and sometimes choose what I’m going to listen to.

Until tomorrow, keep spinning…

Salutations™!!

So today was the big day. It was the DWSP Excellence Awards for 2018. All the recipients were pleased with their videos and since it’s now over and happened, I can say who won the awards. Bailey Power Plant, The Ramkat, Cobblestone Farmers’ Market, The Canteen Bistro & Market, Fiddlin’ Fish Beer Company and Claire Calvin. Claire kind of won three times. She won for herself and her restaurants, plus she co-owns Canteen and since her Alma Mexicana restaurant was the first one in Bailey Power Plant, then she was mentioned there, as well. Also, Kim Lawson is the GM of Canteen and her husband is Richard Emmett who co-owns the Ramkat. It was a lot of one degree of separation going on today.20190227_214217

There was a hiccup that wasn’t my doing and I will address that first thing tomorrow, but otherwise, it was a great day.

Plus, we recorded Fan Interference today where we interviewed former WFU and current Arizona Hotshots (of the AAF) QB John Wolford. It was a good interview. Hailey Brooke McFadden is getting a lot of good guests for us. It is awesome. She has some big news that really goes hand-in-hand with my big news that I still haven’t announced yet because I and the entity haven’t worked out the announcement, yet.

Tonight on The Less Desirables, we had Kristen Williams in to talk about K10 Yoga. She was a great guest. And, she got D and B on the floor doing yoga, that’s something.

Stay tuned to the DWSP YouTube channel (and you know I’ll forward it here) for those Excellence Awards vids. Listen to Fan Interference HERE. Listen to TLD HERE.

Salutations™!!

I am really glad that 2018 is over. A fresh new start, now. But, last night, I performed at the Ramkat with The Plaids and I had a ball. I was on stage for every song and was featured in a tune or two. But, my crowning accomplishment last night was when I got to channel my inner-Diana Ross. I’m going to leave you with the video and you can see for yourself. You may have to click a link to see it. If not, well look at my Facebook page.

Salutations™!!

So, tonight at midnight, 2018 will be gone. There have been great things and less-than-great things all year. Celebs that we lost, financial things, worry, politics, and so on. I figure it’s time to get rid of all that and look forward to a great year, Y’all! It has to be good, right? If we make it that way? Here’s hoping.

The Plaids tonight at The Ramkat

Well, if you’re going out tonight, please be safe. It’s one of the worst nights of the year for idiot drivers and idiot everything else. Just be careful. If you’re looking for something to do, The Plaids are playing NYE at The Ramkat. A certain blogger, that you all know and love may be doing some guest appearance stuff. I can’t tell you that person’s name but his initials are me.  Go out and see The Plaids, Y’all. And again, be safe.

Until next year, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

I dealt with some negativity today and, luckily, it had nothing to do with me. I had some more podcast editing to do, a networking event and I was supposed to go rehearse for a small gig I’ll be performing with The Plaids on New Year’s Eve. hqdefault

Well, the negativity was draining for the whole city, I think. I’m not giving it any more publicity other than to say, it was crazy and it should be done.

I did all but seven minutes of the podcast edit and I’ll do that in the morning.

I love hanging out with my TBD friends and whilst this wasn’t an actual TBD event, there was a good bit of us there at a pub that I had never been to before. To my surprise, the owners had heard of me because my friends talk about me (in a good way). I got to taste Bombshell beers with the owners of the bar with the distributor.

I went to rehearsal for The Plaids and it was 10 minutes after the time and no one showed up. Turns out they canceled practice but they forgot to tell me. I’m not a member of the band, so they probably didn’t think about it. Oh well. I can’t tell you what I’ll be doing with them because I want you to come out to see the show, New Year’s Eve at The Ramkat.

And, that Dear Reader, is all I got for today. I’ve had enough fun for today.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

You know, Dear Reader, I have clout. That’s a funny word, “clout.” Not Klout, the social media analytics tool that measures your social media importance. I mean real clout. According to one dictionary’s definition, clout is “influence or power, especially in politics or business.” how-to-shop-local-winston-salem

Now, I’m not bragging on that, that’s a heavy cross to bear, but I know people, people know me. I speak about things, I write a somewhat influential food blog/podcast. People tell me things so I can tell others. That has been built up from The Less Desirables to my time producing/co-hosting Sipping NC, my writings, and so on.

My point, again, is not to brag. My point is people entrust me with information with the intention of spreading it around. With this, I will admit that I get a lot of concessions. I get some “freebies.” I get invited to things because of this “clout.”

Many of the things that I “push” are things that are provided by sponsors of one of my podcasts. I understand that. You understand that. I make no bones about the “official sponsors” that I promote or advertise. Those things are posted about are things that are bartered, traded, gifted or whatever. But, they get that all the time and I will absolutely continue to do that, in abundance.

But, there are a lot of companies out there that are worthy of talking about, even beyond my sponsors or trade partners. These local businesses need to be noticed, need your support and need to be on your “must stop” list.

A Daisy a Day Florists, Airtype, Alma Mexicana, Bookmarks, Brookstown Inn, Camel City BBQ Factory, Mr. Barbecue, Sally Gupton Photography, West End Coffee House, Camino Bakery, Jeffrey Adams, Hutch & Harris, Fearless WS, Footnote, Camel Pawn Shop, Alkali Hair Studio, West End Cafe, Computer and Technology Services (CATS), Fortified Futures, Vibes Up Winston-Salem, River’s Edge, Seamless Living, Dr. Renea’s, Happie Food, Image360, Ink It Promotional Products, Train to Relex Yoga, The Breathing Room, The Porch, The Olio, The Tin Can, BeYou360, TimmyVO, Ed Dean with Cruise Planners, Solutions Afoot, SixFour Web Design, Stallone Frazier Photography, SunnySide Mercantile, Twin City Hive, Black Mountain Chocolate, Sunshine Beverage, Broad Branch Distillery, The Ramkat, Earl’s WS, Wise Man Brewing, Fiddlin’ Fish, Triad Speech Consultants, Crafted The Art of the Taco, Reboot, Dogwood Hops & Crops and The Trophy Room, Sweet Aromaz, The Flour Box, The Tavern at Old Salem, Cowboy Brazilian Steakhouse, Krankies, Fair Witness, a/perture cinema, Sweet Potatoes, Rec Billiards, Mozelle’s Southern Bistro, Campus Gas, ANY of the artists’ shops or galleries on Trade Street, Ronnie’s Country Store, Monstercade, Southside Beer Garden, Old Winston Social Club, Burke Street Pizza, Uncle Buzzy’s, Cin Cin’s, The Quiet Pint, May Way Dumplings, Penny Path Cafe, Cafe Arthurs, Stell Brew, The B-String, Hair Bomb, Coffee Park (all locations) and many, many more.

The point is, all of these businesses are locally owned (and/or operated) and deserve some love. Sure, I take pride in my sponsors and will do everything to promote them, not just because they’re my sponsors but because they have supported me. I’m not going to mention any of them in this post because, for this post, it’s completely unsolicited recommendations. Every one of these businesses is run by local folks who care about their customers and deserve your attention. Not one of these businesses asked me to say anything. I just think this is the weekend and Christmas is coming up. Gift certificates, stocking stuffers, trinkets, dinners, lunches, beers, spirits. Each one of them can help you fulfill your needs and you’ll help keep them in business. I don’t usually say please, but please show them some love and support. They deserve it.

Until tomorrow, when you may see me in a few of these businesses…

Salutations™!!

So, the entire The Less Desirables Network got a new sponsor this week! I am so very proud to announce our partnership with X1 Communications, the standard of internet providers in the downtown WSNC area!X1 Logo

Nathan Geipel, the owner-operator of X1 Communications is a member of TBD Referral Group that I’m part of (that stands for The Best Damn Referral Group) and I know that most of the businesses in the downtown area rely on them for their internet needs. So, when I was going into The Lab at Industry Hill, I called on him to see if they serviced that location. Wait, what? Don’t all internet providers in the area service all the area?

Nope.

X1 Communications are different than traditional internet providers in town. First of all, X1 uses “Fixed Wireless” technology. According to their website: Fixed Wireless is the process of enabling communications between two locations, using a radio as a wireless link. Say what!? Yes, they do not use wired technology. They’re not renting lines from bigger communications companies. They have radios on a few of the taller buildings downtown. In order for them to service your business, they have to have a line-of-sight connection with your business from those points. At that point, the data is transferred between radios using passwords and high-level encryption to ensure fast and secure data transfer. This stuff is high speed!

Does the line-of-sight provision limit their reach? Well, kind of, but what it does is allows Nate and Josh to take care of and provide high-level service to the folks they do serve. I think that’s important.

They own their entire network. Unlike their competitors who rent wires from the phone company, they are not beholden to those primitive measures and can guarantee 99.99% uptime. Which, is imperative to business owners, especially those like me who are internet-based. I didn’t have to buy any special equipment, either. They put the radio on the roof of the building and the building was already wired internally. I plugged my router into the port and BAM! I’m surfing and uploading.

I don’t have to worry about weather problems, either. Their network is on the 5Ghz bandwidth so it is “weather resistant.” I’m not really sure what that means and it doesn’t matter if I know or not, it’s taken care of.

I know what you’re asking. “Is it safe?” Oh yes. X1 uses AES 256 Encryption – the same
level of security as the Dept. of Defense. So, my info, data, properties and all that are quite secure. And, man… it’s fast. The only thing worse than slow internet is no internet. X1 guarantees consistently high speeds, so you focus on your work, not your broadband service. That helps.

Are you like me and tired of dealing with Spectrum and AT&T? Well now, you don’t have to. No more hassle in dealing with the major telecommunications companies. You’re in the capable hands of a local provider, with a history of excellence.

Have I done an ample job of pushing X1 Communications? I hope so, because not only are they my sponsors, I think they have a great product and we know that I love promoting local businesses, especially the ones that I can get behind. But, if you’re looking for more testimonials, I’m sure you can ask Alma Mexicana, Krankie’s, Inmar, BB&T Ballpark, The Ramkat, WBFJ, Camino Bakery and fellow TLD sponsor, Underdog Records. I am sure all of them would give you raving reviews of X1 Communications, too. If you’re in line-of-sight of the taller buildings downtown WSNC and want high-speed broadband internet, contact X1 Communications at (336) 773-9950.

Here’s welcoming X1 Communications to the CrewTLD family! Thanks, Nate and Josh!

Until tomorrow, broadcasting at breakneck speeds…
