Salutations™!!

I’m going to piggyback The Man Who Ate the Town as I always do, but I’m also going to talk about what I said I was going to talk about, yesterday. Kelly and I talk about Camino’s new co-owners, Super Bowl and our food for the big game, Wise Man, Willows and a brand new Asian place called Dynasty. You can hear about that HERE.TLD

Now, on to the other thing. This past Saturday, February 3rd, was the EIGHTH anniversary of the very first recording of The Less Desirables podcast. I tell this story every year and I know you get tired of reading about it but here goes anyway…

Brian and I sat in what is now my son’s bedroom and labored over what we were going to talk about for twenty minutes. This after we spent an hour running around getting all the right cables and such together from where the bands I was in practiced. We pulled it off and the next week we did it again. And the next. And so on. Our first outside guest was Brian’s brother Sean who played the part of the Least Desirable. I feel I can tell that, now.

Then, our first “official” guest was our buddy Jay Platt who was our Beer Guru for the first three years. That date was March 17, in which we went to Finnigan’s afterward to get some holiday time in and started really promoting the show. Jay was a quarterly regular and then moved monthly until circumstances led to him having to stop. I miss old Jay.

We started having guests regularly after a while and one of those was my buddy Eugene, whom other than The BCPF, I probably write the most about on this blog after myself. He became a fixture and co-host as the Official Third Wheel and TV Guru.

Brian eventually bettered himself and moved to Virginia leaving Eugene and me to tend the garden. We then added Caitlin to our fold and she became the Third Wheel. Eugene left and we brought Bruce in to replace him. Bruce was fun, but life took him back to Chi-town. Caitlin took the co-pilot chair and eventually another guest became a permanent fixture, that being Danielle.

With Caitlin, we always knew we were on a limited-time basis with her, because she was going to be moving once her degree was finished. We did get to milk her time for about a year longer than we thought and that was great

When Caitlin had to move, yet another past guest came in to take the Third Wheel seat, or as we call it now, the “Abuse Tim” chair. That would be Bethany and that’s where we are now. Danielle, Bethany and me, with a bevy of guests.

Tomorrow, we will record show #417. That’s more than and longer than any other podcast in this area and as far as I can tell, this state. Without that first one eight years ago, I wouldn’t produce Fan Interference, The Camel City Dispatch/Electric Camel Pod, Tart and Tangy Triad, The Beer Dads, Sipping NC: The Art of Drinking or The Man Who Ate the Town podcasts. With the exception of the CCD and T&TT podcasts, I still do the others as part of The Less Desirables Network.

There are more TLD podcasts and shows coming, whether as part of the TLD Network, a whole new podcast network or for individuals’ use. The future is bright, but I have to get busy, there’s a lot of podcasting to do, yet.

We would have never gotten where we are without our sponsors: City Beverage, Finnigan’s Wake, King’s Crab Shack, Washington Perk, Bull’s Tavern, Underdog Records, Test Pattern. Also, we thank a/perture cinema, The Garage, Bob’s Big Gas Subs and Pub, Cafe Rochè for their support early on and up until the last little bit. A few of those are no longer in existence but we do appreciate them being with us when they were.

This Saturday, we are celebrating our eight-year fun, along with the rest of the network, our guests, our listeners and our people. We are doing that where the whole thing was conceived: Finnigan’s Wake. That’s where I pitched the idea to Brian and we planned its course. I am now inviting all of you to Finnigan’s to celebrate with us. The party is from 7-10, February 10. I really hope to see a lot of you there!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

I was spending my evening in a car line for the Festival of Lights last night but my buddy Clay Howard was heading a band of all-stars for the latest Friday Night Music Club and the last one at the Garage, as it’s closing its doors next week. But, we can check out Clay’s fantabulous vocal stylings doing some Robert Plant and Zeppelin with my other pal – and sometime bandmate – Chad Huskey and the Muddy Creek Players. I present to you, Kashmir…

Salutations™!!

I know I usually save the music videos for Saturday (and there will be one tomorrow) but since Pat DiNizio passed away this week, I decided he deserved a play and well, this is what I wanted to do on my blog. Next Friday, the Friday Night Music Club says goodbye to The Garage and it was just announced that there will be a set of Smithereens songs. So here you go!

Salutations™!!logo

Tonight, Threadbare Trio will be playing the Friday Night Music Club, this month, at The Garage. This month’s theme is “Winston Does Winston” where a number of WSNC acts to covers of other WSNC bands and/or acts. Other acts like Will Jones, Ken Mickey, Corky McClellan, Drat the Luck, Gulley and The Hitchcock Fugitives will also be playing. All of them will be doing something from hometown acts. It will be cool to watch.

So for the Threadbare Trio section, we will be doing two different “tributes.” We’ll be covering two Doug Davis tunes and two Silver Alerts tunes. In addition to Neal, Clay and me, we’ll be joined by Doug Davis himself on guitar. It will be fun.

The nonprofit being highlighted is Authoring Action. There is an actual cover tonight of $7. There will a donation bucket for you to make donations to Authoring Action, which provides an avenue for troubled youth and those who are on a track to failure get back on the right path. In many cases, it can mean the difference between jail and college for these kids. Donating to this cause helps Authoring Action take care of those who need it.

So, come out and see some great musicians doing other great musicians’ music and donate to a great cause. I’ll see you there.

Electric Light Orchestra, The Garage, Vagabond Saints Society

Salutations™!!

Tomorrow night, Vagabond Saints Society will be doing TWO sets of the Electric Light Orchestra tunes at The Garage in downtown Winston-Salem. One is at 7pm and one at 10pm. I’m singing in the second set and if the list I saw is any indication, I’m next to last. I am not sure of the set list because I kind of inherited a song but I’m pretty sure that no hit will be left un-turned.

To give you a hint of what it is I’ll be singing, I’ll just leave this (well and it’s in the title):

Salutations™!!

February 3, 2010.

I drove to the fork of Silas Creek Parkway and Wake Forest Road. I was there to pick up my pal, my buddy, my future business partner, Brian Attridge, from his (now-) former place of employment and drove him to my house. His car was in the shop and I told him I’d pick him up and then take him home (he lives in Greensboro). But, first, he and I had something to take care of. Something we had been planning for a few months.

We arrived at my house and walked into the downstairs bedroom, it wasn’t a “bedroom” at the time, it was my music room/studio room. I realized I was missing a mic cable, so we got back into my vehicle, drove to my family’s office to where I had some extra cables – that’s where the bands I had been in practiced. Then we went back to my house. I made the connections I needed to and turned around to look at him.

“What are we going to talk about? How are we going fill 20 minutes of talking? What are we getting ourselves into?” we took turns asking each other. “I dunno,” was pretty much the response to each question, regardless of who was asking it. Finally, I said, “you know what? I’m just gonna hit the record button and let’s see what happens. If we don’t get 20 minutes, oh well.” I hit the button. 38 minutes later, the very first episode of The Less Desirables podcast was recorded and produced (well, production took another 45 minutes at that point). Wow, that went by quickly! And, so has the last seven years.

We took a bit of time to get the word out, admittedly. People didn’t get what podcasts were back then. I still have to explain it at least once a week. I’ve been podcasting longer than anyone I know around there (just over 10 years) and certainly longer on the scale and consistency that I am now. That’s not bragging, at least it’s not meant to be. I’m just proud of where this has gone. Since then, though, we’ve grown our listenership to good numbers (at least from what we can tell), we have great guests almost every week, now. Heck, I put out one mention about a need for guests in February and now I’m booked through April, some dates even double booked. The name The Less Desirables has become synonymous with community awareness and I love that.

Brian has moved on to bigger things outside of the podcast world. I had my bestest buddy in the world, Eugene as my co-host for over four years. He moved on. I had my good pal, Bruce come on to replace Eug and Bruce, too, had to move on. I have my two wonderful and beautiful work-wives, Caitlin and Danielle who keep me in line but also take good care of me. We’ll lose Caitlin in May/June when she graduates the PhD program and moves to Maryland. I dread that. Dannie B and I will find an ample replacement and we’ll continue on.

We started in that small bedroom downstairs in my house and moved to the upstairs where there was a bit more room and we had to share that loft with my bedroom. That was odd, but it worked. We moved from there to downtown Winston-Salem, the city we talk about and support. Two different studios in the bunkers under Fourth Street and to our current home in the arts district, behind Test Pattern Bar, in what we call Test Pattern Studios. We’ve come a long way.

I expanded my reach from the one show to now doing FIVE as part of The Less Desirables Podcast Network. Fan Interference, The Beer Dads, The Man Who Ate the Town and Sipping NC: The Art of Drinking. To you and the co-hosts of each show, thank you for making the network grow.

To Bruce, Caitlin and Danielle, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you’ve done to help me keep this dream going. To Brian and Eugene, who still are my business partners, albeit in a very small role, thank you for helping me start and/or perpetuate this show to break out into bigger and better things. To Jon and Paul, my Beer Dad brethren, as well as major business partners, thank you for pushing me, supporting me and keeping me sane. This ride would never have reached the heights it has, and will, without all of you. You are all CrewTLD.

To Stephanie/The BCPF, thank you for your wisdom, support, dedication to me and the cause and for loving me. This journey started just before I met you but it would have never gotten where it is without you. I love you dearly for it. And to 3B for giving me something to strive for: being a pain in your arse… just kidding. I love being your dad and I hope you’re proud of where I have this show. Mes ‘Rents, I have to thank you guys, too. You always have pushed me and I have always needed it. You are all CrewTLD.

I thank all of you, our listeners, for hanging around the last seven years and into the future! All the guests that have appeared on the show in these past seven, you’ve made the show what it is. It went from a pop culture podcast to something a little more. Musicians, store owners, brewers, bloggers, vintners, comedians, film makers, writers, business folks, even politicians, and though I try to avoid politics and religion on the show as much as humanly possible. There’s more a variety of guests than that, but that’s the short list. You are all CrewTLD.

City Beverage, a/perture cinema, Finnigan’s Wake, King’s Crab Shack, The Garage, Washington Perk & Provision Company, Test Pattern, Bull’s Tavern, Underdog Records, Hoots Beer Company, Spring House Restaurant Kitchen & Bar. All sponsors of TLD or the other podcasts on the Network, past or present. Thank you all so much for your support for all of our shows. You are all CrewTLD.

Everyone, including past guests, sponsors, friends, family, listeners… you’re all invited to join us tomorrow night, Saturday, February 4 at Finnigan’s Wake Irish Pub & Kitchen for our Annual Post-Holiday/Post-Anniversary Celebration. It’s from 7-10pm. Come have some Irish fare, great libations and celebrate the whole CrewTLD family with gang and me. I look forward to seeing you all!

I’m not going anywhere. This has to go at least another seven years, if not 27 more.
Until tomorrow and the next many years, same blog channel…

The BCPF, The Garage, The Less Desirables, Underdog Records, vinyl, WSNC

Salutations™!!

Yesterday, The Less Desirables gained a new sponsor! We are very proud and excited to announce that Underdog Records will be out new Official Vinyl Store. I’m sure I’ll come up with some fancy schmancy name like I always do. I know what you’re asking, but don’t you already have a music sponsor? Well, yes. The Garage is still our Official Music Sponsor. But, 15133988_10154390906891997_1801627864_othis is different.

With the music section of TLD, we talk about what is happening at The Garage and then what’s coming out on CD and digital download. That’s been the case since The Garage signed on with us several years back. That won’t change. We also play a song by a band or artist that will be playing The Garage that week. It’s all still the same.

What Underdog Records is bringing is a bit different. Jonathan Hodges, owner, will be submitting a report every week of what will be coming out new, or reissued, on vinyl. Vinyl releases do not necessarily correlate with the CD and digital releases. Plus, with the revival of vinyl, a lot of older albums are being re-released. So, he tells us what is coming out that week and what he’s gotten in used. Last week he took in over 1000 used albums.

Underdog Records doesn’t stop there. They do sell a few CDs. They also have live events in the store. It could be a European-style DJ, acoustic artists and so on. They also have turntables and other audio equipment for sale right there, including amps and speakers.

I’ve recently, well in the last two years, gotten back into vinyl. When I was a kid, I had a lot of records, mostly KISS. I didn’t know what I was doing. I scratched them, I left indention on the covers by tracing the pictures, slung the discs around like they were nothing and so on. I treated them very roughly, to say the least. Then, because I was constantly on the go, it was easier and better to have cassettes so my buddies and I could listen to stuff up on the mountain or in the woods, then when I moved to WSNC, I needed cassettes for my vehicles. Then came CDs and that was even better. While still delicate, they’re more durable than cassettes and vinyl. Then digital. It was a good to not mess anything up, but the compression takes away the sonic quality and makes it murky. It took me a while to figure that out.

The BCPF got me a turntable (or as we sometimes still call it, a record player) for Christmas a couple of years back and I’ve been collecting since. Almost all of my vinyl has come, exclusively, from Underdog Records. In the 150 that I’ve amassed over the last year or so (I didn’t start right away), I’d say 90% of the collection has come from Underdog. Jonathan keeps the new stuff but there’s wealth of the old stuff in there. You should go in just to see it.

I’m still not completely happy with my vinyl set up now. I’m playing the records through a home theater set up. While it has good sound and is great for surround sound movies, I want an amp and speakers that are dedicated to that warm gooey sound quality that only vinyl can produce. So, when The BCPF and I move (it’s probably coming in the moderately near future), we’re hoping to find a home where we can turn one room into a music/listening/entertainment room, that has nothing to do with the home theater system. I’ve already told Jonathan that I’d be coming to him to see what we could put in the listening room.

So, again, I’m very excited to have Underdog Records on board CrewTLD and TLD Family. If you like old school record stores, have an affinity for vinyl, want to sell your old vinyl or want to discover (or re-discover) the joys of vinyl, you should head straight for Underdog Records, located at 835 Burke Street in WSNC. It’s awesome! And listen to TLD every Wednesday night/Thursday morning to hear about the new releases and new treasures in the store. Follow Underdog Records on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Thanks Jonathan and Underdog Records!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

AFAS, Fan Interference, Mary's Gourmet Diner, The Garage, The Less Desirables, The Man Who Walked the Town, WSNC

Salutations™!!

There is a lot of stuff going on around the area that I’m sitting in at the Test Pattern Studios. I’m staring out the front window right now, I took down the curtain for a bit (notice The Garage, The Less Desirables Official Music Sponsor). Allowing the day to get in and recording Fan Interference. For right now, all’s quiet. Since 8:50 this morning until right now (1:40p) the construction crews have been almost non-stop: running concrete saws, cutting rebar, busting concrete and sidewalks and pavement,

unnamed-8

TC (l) & Chris Lea of Fan Interference

yelling at each other, playing grabarse (not really), running minihoe (small trackhoe) and the list goes on. There was a break, but now, it’s on again/off again.

This, little difference from the normal grinding, cutting, pounding, hammering and paving that has been going on across the street at what will be the shiny new AFAS (Arts For Arts Sake) World Headquarters. Don’t hear me wrong. As annoying as the noise is (especially when you’re in the recording business), I understand, know and look so forward to the awesomeness that the building will hold. For one, it will truly be awesome. It will be great to look at and its purpose will be great, too. Secondly, the noise will be over, finally. This day’s noise is in conjunction with the AFAS stuff, but it’s directly in front of my window. Usually, I have a buffer from the concrete block wall on the corner and side. Just difficult to work.

The area is just cluttered with progress right now. Around the whole block (from 7th around to MLK/8th, Trade to Liberty), there’s construction. Mary’s Gourmet Diner (the Official Carbonator of The Man Who Walked the Town) is closed today because of the new office building that’s being put in right next door has the entire part of Trade closed. People tend to lose their marbles and can’t find their way back to her, through the back door. I think the other breakfast joint is open, I’m not sure. That’s throwing a kink in Mary’s making a living. There may be some other things such as power and things that are impacting that, but it’s difficult to run a business, especially a restaurant, when people can’t get to you or the electricity is off.

Parking is also an issue. The parking lot behind the studios are partially blocked and the street, as well. There’s places, you just have to look for them. Just gotta get through the day, I think that part is over this afternoon. Let’s hope. Again, let’s not take this wrong. I, and I’m pretty sure Mary, am excited for the finished product, it’s just difficult to get through the construction. We welcome our new neighbors, just, please… hurry up (I say with a genuine smile)!!

Until tomorrow, when, hopefully, it’s quieter, same blog channel…
