Salutations™!!

So, whilst doing the social media for The Less Desirables, and on the recommendation of Superfan Damien, I decided to watch Heavy Metal 2000. He was right to a point, The storyline is more linear and makes a little more sense, but it’s really just one story and not pieces. It’s not about the Loc Nar as the first one was. I mean, the Loc Nar is insinuated but, it’s not the focus.

Another thing that’s missing is the cool soundtrack. Yeah, there are songs and yeah, they’re more actual “metal,” but it’s just not got the same feel. Instead of Cheap Trick, Journey, Grand Funk, BOC, Black Sabbath, Sammy Hagar, Devo and Stevie Nicks, we get less memorable songs from Pantera, System of a Down, Voivod, Monster Magnet, Bauhaus, Queens of the Stone Age and Billy Idol, who actually lends his voice to Odin, the guardian of the ancient fountain that gives the bad guy his powers and such. The fountain guardians aren’t the bad guys, by the way. But, is Odin one of them, really? Hmmm… I’m not getting into the plot and all that. The saddest part, though, is that Percy Rodrigues isn’t voiced in this film (he was alive then, couldn’t he have done something?).

The whole thing is kind of disjointed and like I said makes a little more sense, it just isn’t any better. It also is not and was never the cult classic the first one was. The movie rating site, Rotten Tomatoes rates the first one at 61% Fresh (67% Audience Score). This one, however, is a dismal 10% Rotten (36% Audience). Yeah, the more I think about it, it really did suck, pretty much.

The main female character, Julie, is actually modeled after, drawn in the likeness of and voiced by softcore porn actress and 1993 Penthouse Pet of the Year, Julie Strain. Michael Ironside plays the main villain, Tyler.

It’s really a crappy film, but it’s somewhat entertaining when you have to have something going on while you’re doing social media, you know?  Yeah… I guess so.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Tonight’s cheezoid film whilst working is actually something I knew of and saw when I was a kid, Heavy Metal (1981). It’s an animated film based on the sci-fi/fantasy magazine of the same name. I used to look at the mag because there was nudity, albeit cartoon nudity but I’ll admit that even beyond that aspect, it was too mature for me. I had no clue what it was about. I didn’t get the stories.

I’ll be honest, whilst watching this, I understood what was going on but didn’t get the point. I mean, what does it mean? Now, that being said, I don’t feel it’s really cheesy, I just don’t “get” it. It has some fantastic animation, as did the mag in its art. And, another awesome thing about his film is its soundtrack, which I thought I had on vinyl, but it appears that I don’t.

Cheap Trick, Journey, Devo, Grand Funk Railroad, Don Felder, Donald Fagen, Nazareth, Stevie Nicks, and Blue Oyster Cult are just some of the artists featured on the soundtrack. Some of the voices are by John Candy, Eugene Levy, Don Francks, Rodger Bumpass, Harold Ramis and the amazing Percy Rodriguez (who passed away in 2007 but you’d definitely know his voice). It was produced by Ivan Reitman.

All in all, it’s not a bad film, really, I just don’t get the point, but then again, I’m not finished with it. We’ll see how it ends. Like I said, the animation and soundtrack are both awesome. I’d recommend this just for those two things. Check it out, won’t you?

Salutations™!!

It was a pretty routine day for us other than having to go do some phone stuff for The BCPF. Of course, the highlight is going to Underdog Records where several of our Facebook group were and we got to chat a bit. Also, we added to the Rolling Stone (RS) List collection. I’ll tell you more about it as we go on. Speaking of which…as_front_300k

  • David Bowie – Aladdin Sane – 2nd pressing in excellent shape. #279 on the RS list. VG+.
  • David Bowie – Young Americans – Original pressing and also in excellent condition. VG+.
  • David Bowie – Station To Station – Original pressing in VG+ condition. #324 on the RS list.
  • John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band – John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band – #23 on the RS list (which I totally disagree with, I think if anything it’s in the mid-200s tops). A late 70s/early 80s reissue. VG+.
  • Bob Dylan – New Morning – Because The BCPF loves and wants to have just about everything from Dylan. This is from 1970 and I believe this is an original pressing. VG.
  • Emmy Lou Harris – Gliding Bird – 1979 reissue of the original 1970 version. VG+.
  • Elton John – Honky Château – Because I want all the EJ albums and this is a great one. #359 on the RS list. VG+ envelope gatefold.
  • The Alan Parsons Project – Vulture Culture – A month ago, all I knew of APP was “Eye in the Sky.” Now, I look for anything I can find. VG+
  • Lionel Richie – Dancing On The Ceiling –  One from my late teens/late high school years. “Deep River Woman” is one fantastic song. VG+.
  • Foreigner – Agent Provocateur – I know this wasn’t one of their most popular, but I’m sure it’s not too awful. VG+.
  • Wings – Venus And Mars – Paul McCartney is my favorite Beatle and I want his stuff. That’s it. VG+.
  • Paul McCartney & Wings – Band On The Run – #418 on the RS list. My favorite Mac/Wings album. VG+
  • Stevie Nicks – Bella Donna – The BCPF wishes she could have been nicknamed Stevie growing up. She loves the name. This had several great tunes, too. VG+.
  • Marshall Crenshaw – Marshall Crenshaw –  Crenshaw played Buddy Holly (59th anniversary of his death yesterday) in the film La Bamba. I like his tune “Someday, Someway” which is on here. VG+.
  • Procol Harum – Grand Hotel – Procol Harum is one of Jonathan (from Underdog)’s favorite groups. I know “A Whiter Shade of Pale” and want to know more. So, here’s a chance. VG+.
  • Rolling Stones – Dirty Work – “Harlem Shuffle” was never a favorite of mine, but it’s in the canon, so it gets added. VG+.
  • The Rolling Stones – Big Hits (High Tide And Green Grass) – $1 bin find and it’s the Rolling Stones. G+.
  • Carly Simon – Hotcakes – VG+ $1 bin find.
  • Peter, Paul And Mary – Peter, Paul And Mary – $1 bin find. Ma Mère had that on vinyl when I was growing up, I’m pretty sure. The BCPF is a sucker for that stuff. VG.
  • Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell – United – Kind of beat up but it should play fine. $1 bin find. G/G+.

So that’s a pretty good haul, we think. We’re happy with it. Underdog had some nice speakers for sale yesterday. They always have something new and gently used come in, be it records, speakers, turntables, cassette players, receivers, even reel-to-reel at times. Keep up with them on social media to keep up with their “newly posted” items.

Discogs is a great way to keep up with your collection. Also, buying from their marketplace is pretty fun (but be careful, you can spend a lot of money in there).

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Abigail Dowd, Chad Huskey, Common Grounds, Jason Duff, Music, Party Battleship, Stevie Nicks, Test Pattern, Threadbare Trio, Tom Petty

Salutations™!!

So, we were able to get through an acoustic show as Threadbare Trio +1 at Common Ground this evening. We played with the beautiful and talented Abigail Dowd and Jason Duff. She even got up on stage when we opened for her and did “Stop Dragging My Heart Around” by Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty. We sounded pretty good and Chad Huskey did a great job playing with us. It was fun.1testpattern

Now, it’s time to get some rest, do our regular Saturday thing, get some records and then prepare to go to Test Pattern and do the thing again, this time full electric and loud and with Party Battleship. So, you missed us at Common Grounds, catch us at Test Pattern. The show starts around 9 and we are doing the opening thing (but going last).

See you, then!

Until then, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

It was one of our favorite hauls, yet. Underdog Records just had it going on, yesterday. The BCPF and I picked some classic stuff up, for sure. We really didn’t get to listen to a lot of different stuff because we were listening to two albums that were 3 LPs, big. I’ll explain as we go on. Here we go:R-5560361-1460298207-7799.jpeg

  • Kiss – Dynasty (Paul and Peter’s solo albums are on back order so I decided to move forward in the discography whilst waiting. So much I could write about this album. It would take a whole blog post, new)
  • Nick Drake – Pink Moon (One of The BCPF’s favorite albums ever, it was there, we couldn’t not do it, new)
  • Radiohead – OK Computer OKNOTOK 1997 2017 (3 LP, 20th Anniversary Edition, opaque blue vinyl with bonus tracks, new)
  • Simon & Garfunkel, Dave Grusin – The Graduate (Original Sound Track Recording)
  • Judy Garland – Annie Get Your Gun
  • Max Steiner – Gone With The Wind (Original Sound Track Album) (Ma Mère’s favorite film of all time)
  • The Rolling Stones – Aftermath UK (Near mint condition reissue, the previous owner was Audiophile who purchased the Mono Box Set of Stones and sold these off)
  • The Rolling Stones – Their Satanic Majesties Request (ditto)
  • Richard Marx – Richard Marx (yes, don’t judge)
  • Joan Baez – The First 10 Years
  • Paul Simon – Paul Simon
  • Talking Heads – Little Creatures
  • Mr. Mister – Welcome To The Real World
  • Carole King – Music
  • Stevie Nicks – The Wild Heart
  • Varel And Bailly – From France with Music (The BCPF and I are obsessed with just about any and everything French, especially music. We listen to this with huge smiles on our faces)
  • Otis Redding – The Best Of Otis Redding
  • Johnny Cash – This Is Johnny Cash
  • The Psychedelic Furs – Mirror Moves
  • Elton John – Friends (Adding to our Elton John collection)
  • Terence Trent D’Arby – Introducing The Hardline According To Terence Trent D’Arby
  • John Raitt – Carousel Chorus And Orchestra – Carousel (Original 1949 pressing of Original “New York” Cast in excellent shape, seems to be the heaviest 33 1/3 I’ve ever felt. Even heavier than 180g)
  • Carol Channing, Yvonne Adair – Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (Original Broadway Cast)
  • Joni Mitchell – The Hissing Of Summer Lawns (Latest in our Joni Mitchell acquisitions)

So you can see, we picked up some great stuff. We were excited. Get over to Underdog Records between Tuesday and Saturday and grab records, accessories and just good music conversations. Listen to The Less Desirables episodes every week to hear what the current Underdog/TLD deals are. And, if you’re not using Discogs to archive and catalog your collection, then you’re truly missing out.

“Fitter, happier. More productive. Comfortable. Not drinking too much. Regular exercise at the gym, three days a week. Getting on better with your associate employee contemporaries. At ease. Eating well, no more microwave dinners and saturated fats. A patient, better driver. A safer car, baby smiling in back seat. Sleeping well, no bad dreams. No paranoia. Careful to all animals, never washing spiders down the plughole. Keep in contact with old friends, enjoy a drink now and then. Will frequently check credit at moral bank, hole in wall. Favours for favours, fond but not in love. Charity standing orders on Sundays, ring-road supermarket. No killing moths or putting boiling water on the ants. Car wash, also on Sundays. No longer afraid of the dark or midday shadows, nothing so ridiculously teenage and desperate. Nothing so childish. At a better pace, slower and more calculated. No chance of escape. Now self-employed. Concerned, but powerless. An empowered and informed member of society, pragmatism not idealism. Will not cry in public. Less chance of illness. Tires that grip in the wet, shot of baby strapped in backseat. A good memory. Still cries at a good film. Still kisses with saliva. No longer empty and frantic. Like a cat. Tied to a stick. That’s driven into frozen winter shit, the ability to laugh at weakness. Calm, fitter, healthier and more productive. A pig in a cage on antibiotics.” – Fitter Happier (Yorke, Greenwood, O’Brien, Greenwood, Selway)

Salutations™!!

Here I am, making up or catching up after the weekend’s seemingly non-stop party. It started as usual with breakfast at Mary’s Gourmet Diner and then heading over to Underdog Records, where we picked up some great stuff before heading to Windsor Run Cellars and then Shadow Springs wineries (they’re owned by the same cool folks). Then on to Willows Bistro for great food and beverage. Here’s the haul for this week:R-450842-1249177353.jpeg

  • Prince And The Revolution – Purple Rain (anniversary edition, new)
  • Elliott Smith – Figure 8 (numbered limited edition, #429 out of 2,016 on green smoke clear vinyl, NM)

  • Lennon / Plastic Ono Band – Shaved Fish
  • Robert Palmer – Riptide
  • The Who – Who Are You
  • Stevie Nicks – Rock A Little
  • Howard Jones – Dream Into Action (I had this on cassette right after it came out, I love the album version of “No One is to Blame.” The hit version was remixed by Phil Collins. Speaking of Phil Collins)
  • Phil Collins – Hello, I Must Be Going!
  • 38 Special – Special Forces
  • Robert Plant – Shaken ‘N’ Stirred
  • Sly & The Family Stone – Greatest Hits
  • Mikis Theodorakis – Zorba The Greek (Original Soundtrack)
  • Various – Armstrong Presents Cole Porter’s Kiss Me Kate – Original ABC Television Sound Track

  • Various – Music Power (A K-Tel compilation album from 1974 that my mother had when I was a child; I knew it right away)
  • Foreigner – Double Vision
  • Lynyrd Skynyrd – Nuthin’ Fancy (yeah, I am not a fan of Skynyrd, but I dug it when we reviewed it for Eugeology)
  • Miklos Rozsa – Ben-Hur Deluxe Edition
  • Duran Duran – Duran Duran
  • Various – Zero Mostel In Fiddler On The Roof (The Original Broadway Cast Recording)
  • John Barry – Goldfinger (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
  • Henry Mancini – Charade
  • Barbra Streisand, George Segal, Blood, Sweat & Tears – The Owl And The Pussycat (Comedy Highlights And Music From The Soundtrack)
  • Various – To Sir, With Love Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

It was a light week for us, but still a lot of fun! If you’re wanting to get into (or back into) record collecting, then Underdog Records is the place to start. Old stuff, new stuff, reissues, equipment, etc. You should also use Discogs to catalog your collection!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
