Salutations™!!

Yesterday was 3B’s birthday and I got to text with him but not talk with him. But, he was working. The BCPF and I went to Underdog Records, to eat, the grocery store and to eat. But in between all that we listened to a few records, too. Here’s our haul”

©Mute

New Order – Education Entertainment Recreation — 3×LP, 180 gram Box Set. Recorded live at Alexandra Palace, London, November 9, 2018. Their only UK show of 2018. 3LP on 180 gram heavyweight vinyl. Housed in outer, side-pocket cover. Each vinyl issued in record cover (bearing “new order live at alexandra palace”) with slip sleeve, and includes a tri-fold insert. It was pricey but I wanted it, so… I got it. New.

Paul & Linda McCartney – Ram — Limited Edition, Reissue, Remastered, Stereo, 180g, Gatefold. It really only had one single in the US and that was “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey.” Mastered At Abbey Road Studios – Half Speed Mastering. 50th anniversary release (that anniversary is tomorrow). New.

Simon & Garfunkel – Sounds Of Silence — Somehow we didn’t have this. We have overlooked it often just because we thought we had it. We didn’t. We do now. New.

Crosby, Stills & Nash – CSN — This we did have, twice but neither were in great shape. This is a then-still-sealed copy that we promptly opened and listened. Reissue, Remastered, Repress, 180 Gram from 2018. New/NM.

Walt Disney Records – Walt Disney Records The Legacy Collection Sampler — You know I love me some Disney. From Discogs: Walt Disney Records: The Legacy Collection is an exclusive line of musical releases that celebrates the milestone anniversaries of twelve of Disney’s most beloved original soundtracks. Each elegantly packaged title contains beautiful artwork and liner notes that tell the story behind the music. This sampler includes a small taste of the musical treasures that have made these soundtracks some of the most cherished of all time. Make sure to add all of the Legacy Collection titles to your Disney collection of music! NM.

Emo Philips – E=MO² — I have no clue what this is. I just know I like Emo Philips. We’ll see. EX.

Tina Turner – Private Dancer — The newly named Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Tina Turner’s biggest album and somehow I didn’t have it. Earlier this week we had the Brothers In Arms anniversary from Dire Straits and from that I played a cover of “Your Latest Trick” which was about a prostitute (or at least people who prostitute themselves). On this album, there’s “Private Dancer,” the title track that was also written by Mark Knopfler. I just find that interesting. EX.

Underdog Records always has great things to find to bring home to have a listening party, either alone or with a group (being socially mindful, that is). Underdog is open Wednesday-Saturday and you can purchased new vinyl 24/7 by visiting the Underdog Records website. Record Store Day is in June and July you can see the drops lists by visiting that website. I use Discogs to track my collection. You should, too.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Salutations™!!

Today is the 53rd anniversary of Simon & Garfunkel’s most amazing album, Bookends. It’s my favorite of theirs. So many great tunes and, to me, nary a clunker to be found. It was inexplicably ranked at #234 on the RS list that matters and in yet another example of why the new list does NOT matter, it’s absent altogether. Unacceptable. But, the bright side is I never pass up a chance to play a Mike Massé cover. Enjoy!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

We got very little listening in yesterday as we had several other “errands” or “just wanted to dos” but, we got some in. It was a chilly but beautiful day yesterday. Here’s the haul:

©Sire

Oasis – (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? — #378 on the RS list that matters and rises to #157 on the one that doesn’t. This song has two of my faves on here, “Champagne Supernova” and “Wonderwall.” Yeah, you know me, I’m all about “the hits.” 2×LP, Reissue. Remastered double heavyweight vinyl – includes download code for album, bonus unreleased tracks & rarities. New.

Depeche Mode – Gone To The U.S.A. — Compilation, Unofficial Release, Red Vinyl. Remixed tunes, imported album. Some interesting remixes on this album. The red vinyl is beautiful. New.

Joy Division – Atrocity Exhibition: Live In Paris, December 18th, 1979 — Limited To 500 Copies. It’s Joy Division live. In Paris. In 1979. Just as the title suggests. It’s typical Joy Division, great music with great lyrics with a troubled singer. Import. New.

The Beatles – With The Beatles — With one of the most imitated covers in music history, this was the band’s second album, released on the same day that JFK was assassinated. Stereo remastered album on heavyweight 180g vinyl. This album has been prepared using the 2009 digital remasters which had been created from the original stereo analogue master tapes. New.

The Beatles – Beatles For Sale — This is The Beatles’ fourth album, which is probably my least favorite of their stuff. It’s sandwiched between A Hard Day’s Night and Help! which are my two favorite “early Beatles” albums. Manufactured on 180-gram, audiophile quality vinyl with replicated artwork. This album has been prepared using the 2009 digital remasters which had been created from the original stereo analogue master tapes. Gatefold, I think. New.

Simon & Garfunkel – Bookends — This album was at the ridiculously high number of #234 on the RS list that matters and fell completely off for the one that doesn’t, which verifies just one of the reasons why it doesn’t matter. A scandalous atrocity! This album contains one of the greatest songs ever recorded, “America.” It also has “Mrs. Robinson” and “A Hazy Shade of Winter.” New.

Morrissey – I’m A Poet — Unofficial release. Recorded for FM Broadcast at the Balch Fieldhouse, part of the University of Colorado, Boulder on 1st of October 1992. Import. New.

Ramones – Rocket To Russia — #106 on the RS list that matters and #385 on the one that doesn’t. I’ve never been a fan of the Ramones, it’s like weird punk mixed with surfing music and 50s nostalgia. I listened to the album when I did the 500 and I remember that I didn’t really care for it other than “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker.” But, this listen wasn’t so bad. Some of it was redundant and classic crap that I don’t like, but some of it was enjoyable. New.

a-ha – Scoundrel Days — The second studio album by Norwegian new wave band a-ha. “Water drops” on front and back cover are embossed. Glossy inner sleeve contains lyrics and credits. I loved Hunting High and Low and hope this one is as good. I have no reason to believe it won’t be. NM/EX.

Kings Of Convenience – Quiet Is The New Loud — The debut album by Norwegian indie pop duo Kings of Convenience, released on January 29, 2001. This is an über rare album and The BCPF saw Norwegian, indie pop, duo, and had to have it. Now this is only in Good condition because there is a lot of surface wear. This could be anything, but, I’m going to guess it was from neglect and over-playing. The cover is in at least VG/VG+.

Saint-Saëns / Franck – Rubinstein, Wallenstein, Symphony Of The Air – Concerto No. 2 / Symphonic Variations — To be clear, Side A is “Concerto No. 2 In G Minor, Op. 22” from one of my favorite composers, Camille Saint-Saëns. Side B is “Symphonic Variations” from César Franck. Both are performed by Symphony Of The Air which was some of the core members of the newly-disbanded NBC Symphony Orchestra. Both sides are conducted by Alfred Wallenstein, featuring Artur Rubinstein on piano. EX.

Large Symphony Orchestra, Moscow Radio And Television • Vladimir Fedoseyev – Alexander Glazunov – Symphony No. 5 • Suite From The Middle Ages — The orchestra – Large Symphony Orchestra, Moscow Radio And Television. The conductor – Vladimir Fedoseyev. The composer – Alexander Glazunov. VG+.

A big haul this week. I didn’t even realize that the Saint-Saëns piece was in there. The BCPF snuck it in. Underdog Records was jumping and even more so when we were leaving. The capacity is now at 10 customers at a time and he was about maxed out when we took off. He’s had to expand the “freshly used” section because he’s getting to a lot of things and getting them put out. That’s cool. Good stuff to choose from. If you’re in to heavy metal and I mean the real heavy stuff – death/black/cryptic – then he’s got plenty for you. But, don’t worry, there are plenty of other great selections, too. The store is open from 11a-7p Wednesday through Saturday and Jonathan does deliveries (weather permitting) Monday and Tuesday. You should watch the Underdog Records social media. Instagram is Jonathan’s platform of choice. You can shop new vinyl, day or night, 24/7 by visiting the Underdog Records website. I use Discogs to track my collection and also make sure I’m not getting unwanted duplicates. Or, may it helps me with the wanted duplicates?

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Salutations™!!

Todays is the 54th anniversary of Simon and Garfunkel’s Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme album. Whenever I think of those ingredients, I get hungry. “Scarborough Fair” by itself I like, a lot. I don’t really enjoy the “Canticle” part on top of it. My favorite version overall is Queensrÿche’s version, but I love Mike Massé and try to never pass over his version of anything. This is from a while back and Mike’s hair was a bit disheveled and he was still a bit pudgy. But his voice is still fantastic. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

Today is the 52nd anniversary of Simon & Garfunkel’s Bookends album. My favorite album by them, and it has my favorite song by them. #234 on the RS List. One cool thing about this song is the fact that there is no rhyming; basically a continuous story. There were plenty of vids to choose from for this but I think these young ladies did a great job. Let’s go with it. Enjoy!

Today is the 55th anniversary of Simon & Garfunkel’s Wednesday, Morning 3AM. Wow. I really debated between the S&G version of this song from The Concert in Central Park and the amazing version from Disturbed. Keeping it old school won out. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

Today is the 51st anniversary of one of the greatest albums of all time. #234 on the RS List, which I think is ridiculous! It should be higher on the chart. Heck, I’d trade it for the Velvet Underground & Nico album at #13, which I’d rather just erase all together. But, this isn’t that, this is Bookends from Simon & Garfunkel. So, in honor of it, I found a cover of one of my faves from it. And, I will never pass up a reason to play Mike Massé, so here ya go. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

The BCPF hasn’t been feeling well and it’s just another hit to our 2019 plans. Not her fault, of course, but we had wanted to start a big cleaning/purge project through this year to just get more organized. But, she’s not felt up to it because of all the crud going around. Plus, this will enable us to have more room for records!

Nothing's_Shocking_(Jane's_Addiction_album_-_cover_art)

She was able to get out of the house for the first time in three days yesterday and that helped her out a lot. We got to go by Underdog Records and grab a haul and I signed up for the Curated by Underdog program because I’m interested in what Jonathan will put together for me. Anywhat! Here’s the haul:

  • XTC – Skylarking — Yes, I had this already but it was in really sad shape and while I don’t want to get into the rabbit hole of replacing things with better versions (as that can get expensive) there are a few that I just can’t not get better copies of. This was a brand new remastered reissue that was in the clearance bin. Again, new.
  • Jane’s Addiction – Nothing’s Shocking — As someone put it on my Facebook post about this, this was the “Appetite for Destruction” for the alternative scene. The BCPF said that for her high school days, everyone had this. The heavy metal folk, the indie folk, the college radio folk, anyone who listened to anything remotely rocking, had this, she said. It was a little behind my time and it was the leading edge of what I didn’t like or want to hear. That being said, with time comes appreciation and I really do appreciate and yes, like, this album, now. And, it’s #312 on the RS list! New.
  • Roger Waters – The Pros And Cons Of Hitch Hiking — I don’t know what my aversion to Roger Waters was, but when I was 20-21 or so, someone tried to get me to listen to this. I listened for about four minutes and ejected the tape. Nah said I. But, I like Pink Floyd. What is wrong with me? This is basically his extension of The Wall which is my favorite Floyd album. This is Radio KAOS are fantastic albums that I, regrettably, realized way too late. VG+.
  • Blossom Dearie – Blossom Time — Blossom Dearie. The first time I ever heard that name was when the Schoolhouse Rock nostalgic craze showed back up in the 90s and the internet allowed me to look up info. She sang “Figure Eight,” “Unpack Your Adjectives” and part of the “Mother Necessity” ensemble. She has a very unique child-like quality in her voice. But, I saw an album by her at Underdog a while back and it was expensive. Someone else posted on our “Now Spinning” group that they were playing her and they loved her. I had Alexa play her tunes and I listened for hours. I love her. This was a great find and I couldn’t pass it up. It’s an original from 1966 and is in VG+.
  • Nazareth – Hair Of The Dog — Now you’re messing with what? VG+.
  • Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Tarkus — My recent ELP undertaking lately means when I see them, if I don’t have them, I get them. This is in VG++!
  • Hank Williams, Jr. – Hank Williams, Jr.’s Greatest Hits — I mean, why not? VG+.
  • Christine McVie – Christine McVie — This is a fantastic record. It’s her second solo effort released in 1984. Lindsay Buckingham (who just went through open-heart surgery and has damaged vocal cords) plays some guitar and sings some backup on the album. Mick Fleetwood shows up for a bit. Eric Clapton, too. And, Steve Winwood sings a duet with Christine and co-wrote another tune on the album. A great listen, this. VG++.
  • The Escape Club – Wild Wild West — What is a Saturday haul without some 80s cheese (my favorite)? I don’t know what anything past the title song sounds like, I guess I’ll find out soon. VG.
  • Mott The Hoople – The Hoople —”Roll Away the Stone” and “The Golden Age of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Should be all we need to know. It was a $1 bin find and is probably in VG.
  • Various – Arthur (The Album) — I liked the film and loved the soundtrack because I love cheesy yacht rock. There ya go. $1 bin find. VG+.

Also, we picked up a better copy of Bridge Over Troubled Water from Simon & Garfunkel. This was VG/VG- but it sure beats the F+/G- version we have.

So, yeah, back to the Curated by Underdog thing. According to the Underdog Records website, “This is a flexible subscription service with multiple options to best tailor it to your desires while still giving Underdog Records the flexibility to creatively influence your collection with albums we know you’ll enjoy.”

I decided to go with the “Novice Monthly Package” with a New/Used Mix. I’m really no novice, but the Expert package is $50 per month and I’m not quite ready to spend that, yet. The Novice package is $35 per month. You can choose to do it bi-monthly or quarterly, too. So, I will get two used and one new album that, combined, would add up to around $35 for the combo. I’m excited because as Jonathan said, my tastes are all over the place. I’m just ready to see what he puts together for me. You know I’m going to share it with you, Dear Reader!

In order to do this, he has to have access to my Discogs. Discogs, if you’re not familiar, is a free website on which you can catalog your collection, including specific pressings and the condition of your albums, in order to keep up with what you already have, what’s on your want list, what lesser grade albums in your collection need upgrading, and much more. (that last part was from Underdog’s website, thanks Jonathan).

Until tomorrow, keep spinning…

It was a rainy, then sunny, then rainy, then sunny day yesterday. Mary’s Gourmet Diner, Underdog Records, Willows Bistro. Lots of record listening. But, it was a great day. Great. Day. Here’s our haul:

220px-Dokken_-_Under_Lock_and_Key

©Elektra Records

  • Dokken – Under Lock And Key – I dug me some Dokken in the mid-80s. This is my favorite album from them as it contains “In My Dreams” which is my favorite song from them. And… it was there in VG++ condition. Why pass that up?
  • Dokken – Back For The Attack – This was there at VG++, too. Double trouble!
  • Simon & Garfunkel – The Concert In Central Park – They had a full band behind them on this album. They performed in front of 500,000 people at this concert. 500k!!! But, it was put the best by The BCPF: Paul Simon solo with Art Garfunkel’s harmonies=perfection. VG+.
  • Dire Straits – Making Movies – This leaves only two albums for me to get to have the whole Dire Straits studio catalog. Granted their catalog isn’t that extensive but the point is that I have really gotten into them and I want all of them. This isn’t my favorite one or even two of theirs but it’s still really good. Jonathan kept an eye out for me as I missed out on a copy a few weeks back. VG++.
  • Talking Heads – Stop Making Sense – I really wish that this was the extended version of the album. That would have been a 2xLP, I’m sure. I don’t even know if there is a version on vinyl or not. This has a truncated version of “Once in a Lifetime,” excluding the “water dissolving, water removing” part. In fact, every song but two were truncated because of limitations of vinyl’s capacity. The CD/cassette versions were longer. Plus, none of the Tom Tom Club stuff. This album is #345 on the RS list. As far as the overall goes, I think it’s way too low. I’d put it in the Top 100, but that’s just me. I think this is awesome, I just wish there was a deluxe version. VG+.
  • George Frideric Handel/ The English Concert, Trevor Pinnock – Music For The Royal Fireworks, Concerti A Due Cori – The BCPF loves her some Hanel. VG+.
  • Electric Light Orchestra – Eldorado – A Symphony By The Electric Light Orchestra – I love me some ELO and I love the Wizard of Oz reference on the cover. VG.
  • Richard Harris – My Boy –  I really enjoyed the first Richard Harris album that I had. I’m wondering if the album was dedicated to his son, Jared, who fans of Mad Men would know as Lane Pryce on the show? He would have been around 10 when this came out. VG+.
  • Jean-François Paillard Chamber Orchestra • I Solisti Veneti • Various – The Pachelbel Canon And Other Baroque Favorites – NM.
  • Nat ‘King’ Cole Trio – In The Beginning – VG+ of very early Nat. It’s his trio and it was true jazz. The BCPF really loves him and I love the style (and him, too). Great record.
  • Nat King Cole – L-O-V-E – $1 bin find in mono and VG shape. More Nat King Cole.
  • Nat King Cole – Let’s Face The Music – And more in the $1 and in VG shape.
  • Johnny Cash & June Carter – Carryin’ On With – $1 bin find in VG shape.
  • Buster Poindexter – Buster Poindexter – The sandpaper-voiced singer of the New York Dolls, David Johansen, in his mid-to-late-80s alter ego, Buster Poindexter. Yeah, I liked “Hot Hot Hot” and that’s why I bought it. Well, that and it was only $1. It’s in VG+ shape.
  • Various – Television’s Greatest Hits, Volume II – I’m a sucker for television theme songs and I actually have this on CD. But, I couldn’t pass up on having the 2xLP version and that 2xLP version was only $1. Ka-ching!
  • Bonnie Raitt – Give It Up – #495 on the RS list and it was sitting in the $1 bin. The BCPF picked it up, so “yay her” for adding to the list. We’re up to 187 out of 500 right now. VG.
  • Monty Python – Instant Record Collection – Exactly as it says., Monty Python. Sketch stuff, I think. $1 bin find. VG.
  • Gerry Rafferty – Night Owl – I enjoyed the other Rafferty album I have. It’s a $1 bin find in VG.
  • Mel Tormé – The Tormé Touch – I got this for several reasons. It was in the $1 bin. I like his voice. I dig his nickname (the Velvet Fog). And, I was a fan of Harry Anderson and Mel was his favorite singer. RIP Harry (and Mel). VG.
  • The Steve Miller Band – Circle Of Love – It was there for $1. That’s the only reason I got it. Well, I liked the cover. VG.

That’s it. That’s a pretty extensive haul but a lot of it was $1 bin stuff. I added two to the RS list gathering experiment.

Underdog Records has a ton of freshly-stocked used vinyl in. If you’ve not been in a while, go check it out! If you’ve never been, check it out! Don’t have a receiver or turntable or speakers? Want some? Underdog Records always has some equipment for sale and reasonably priced.  All your vinyl needs can be met at Underdog. Usually, they are open Tuesday-Saturday but for this week, they’ll be closed on Tuesday as Jonathan and Kerri are going out of town for the holiday. He certainly needs and deserves it.

Discogs is how I bring you this list every week. I keep every album I own on vinyl listed on there and they have a pretty cool marketplace, too.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Yesterday was a beautiful day. It was warm but not hot, the humidity was quite low, the windows on “Annabelle” were all open, including the moonroof. The BCPF and I walked around Old Salem and visited with friends at the Cobblestone Farmers Market, at breakfast at Mary’s Gourmet Diner, visited Underdog Records, put together our new vinyl shelf, started the reorganization process (re-alphabetizing) of the “reset” which I’ll explain in a bit, early dinner at Willows Bistro and finished with a little get together with our very good friends. So, here’s the haul:

  • Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Life – This was still sealed from 1987. We listened to it but didn’t have time to post a Facebook or Instagram log about it. It was different but exactly the same. I would say a little less singer-songwriter and more just late 80s rock. NM.
  • Randy Newman – 12 Songs – #356 on the RS list. I found that I really dig some Randy Newman whilst listening to that song. He actually wrote a lot of stuff that other folk recorded; like “Mama Told Me Not to Come,” made more famous by Three Dog Night. VG++.
  • The Who – It’s Hard – Early 80s Who. The Who isn’t one of my favorite bands but I find myself wanting their stuff. It was a good price and it was available, so there you go. VG+.
  • Stan Getz – Another World – I have loved just about everything I have heard from Stan Getz, so here’s hoping that I like this 2xLP from the late 70s. VG+.
  • Bananarama – True Confessions – A mid-80s classic. This is the one with “Venus” on it. The BCPF made a comparison that Bananarama’s harmony style is a lot like the Spice Girls. I’d say that Bananarama was probably a direct influence. VG++.
  • Bananarama – Bananarama – This was their debut album featuring “Cruel Summer” and “Robert De Niro’s Waiting.” Haven’t listened to this one, yet. VG+.
  • Simon & Garfunkel – Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. – 1965 debut album of a little duo that is going to go places! One of my favorite S&G tunes is “Sound of Silence” and as The BCPF says, “Paul Simon is a genius.” Yeah, he is. VG.
  • Scorpions – Animal Magnetism – Wracking up on my Scorpions collection. The song “The Zoo” has always been a favorite of mine from this group. VG.
  • Stephen Stills – Stills – We can’t figure out whether Stephen Still is a huge football fan or if he just likes wearing the t-shirt “jerseys.” It seems like you see him in those a lot from the pics on albums and magazines and such from back in the 70s. $1 bin find in VG condition.
  • Humble Pie – Eat It – I have no Humble Pie albums and I’m not sure I’ve even ever heard a song by them. I am sure I have but I wouldn’t know what it was. This is a 2xLP that is part rock, part R&B covers, part acoustic, and live performances. So, I don’t know what to make of it. $1 bin find and in “good” condition.

Jonathan was gearing up for Record Store Day and he was a bit befuzzled but we made it a little better when we arrived at the shop with an iced coffee of some sort that Dana Moody of West End Coffeehouse sent for him. But, we are revving for Record Store Day, as well. We bought this brand new shelf and have started resorting our collection. We’re going to change our process, too.

We already do it alphabetically by artist/band first name because that’s the way Discogs does it and I want to be able to look in order to find them according to Discogs. We are taking the classical out and we’re going to separate that from the regular collection so they’re easier to find. We also keep the ones that we haven’t listened to separate but that part of the collection was becoming quite a stack. So, we decided that since there are two Record Store Days a year – a big one in April and a minor one in the fall (I think Black Friday) – those will be “reset” days. Anything that hadn’t been listened to gets inserted into “gen pop” of the collection. That gives us time to listen and if we haven’t then, oh well.

Visit the Record Store Day website and find out what is coming out next Saturday and go support your local record stores. These are exclusive to indie stores and these albums won’t be on Amazon or in the big box stores. You may find some stuff on eBay but it will most likely be marked up ridiculously. Jonathan has ordered a large sum of product for this event and he needs to unload it. That’s where you (and we) come in. Support local business and indie record store. Yeah, I know I said that already… it’s important.

And, I use Discogs to keep track of what I have, which that list has grown a lot. I have to look at it in the store to make sure I do or don’t have an album before I make duplicate purchases. It’s a fun resource. Try it! They do CDs, too.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
Scorp out!

“And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made. And the sign flashed out its warning in the words that it was forming. And the sign said the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls. And whispered in the sounds of silence.” – “The Sound of Silence” (Simon)
