I promise that I am not going to keep rambling about this. But, I think I’m allowed to still be proud of my boy. He started work today and there were some hiccups that were all on him and had nothing to do with the job. He was there on time, he did what he was told.

Chef Niki said he was humble, attentive, and enthusiastic.

He even washed dishes. We asked how she got him to do that. Her response: “I told him to wash dishes.”

So, the first night was a success. He said he was a little tired. But, okay, I’ve given you all that you can probably handle.

Yesterday we recorded The Man Who Ate the Town, The Beer Dads and today we recorded Apartment 5B. You can listen to the latest episodes here:

Salutations™!!

Last night, 3B and The BCPF and I went to Willows for an event with Chef Terrell Anistead and Ashley Hardesty (from Forsyth Seafood and Market) called The Table Experience.

20190331_204558

Chef Travis, 3B, Chef Terrell

Chef Terrell had 3B come back and help them in the kitchen. Chef Jesse got a chef’s jacket from his car and put it on 3B. He then gave him a black bandana which went on the head like a headband. All four of the kitchen folk back there, at least the guys, were part of the Bandana Gang (from Chef T-Money).

Chef Travis came from a PCG board meeting in Charlotte to check in with the crew and he noticed they had it covered. Throughout the night, Chef Travis, Ryan Oberle (the main-most-bar-dude at Willows) and others came out to tell me “your boy is killing it!”

I purposefully sat where I could look into the kitchen because I wanted to see what was going on. Every time I looked in there, he was right in the middle of everything, prepping, plating, expediting. He really was on it and Chef T-Money (that’s Terrell, by the way) agreed. Also working in the kitchen was Chef Niki F who is the EC of Silo Bistro & Bar and who also owns Niki’s Pickles and Lele who is the GM for the Good Vibes Hospitality folks. Everyone was impressed in his abilities and his hard work.

This morning, I got a call from Lele and she asked if he would be interested in working under Niki at Silo. I said I’d ask him and he was all over it. We don’t know what he’ll be doing. It could be washing dishes. It could be prepping. It could be serving. Who knows. But, the point is, the kitchen is a little more laid back than in Willows and this will be a good way for him to get his feet wet. And, he starts tomorrow. I’m proud of him, excited for him, scared for him, all the things a parent should be for him.

He cooks circles around me and I know he’s top-notch in his culinary class so this is a perfect stepping stone for him. He shouldn’t have trouble and he will listen to Niki’s direction and do what he needs to do. That’s my boy. I love him.

Salutations™!!

Lots of busy, busy, busy this past weekend. Started on Friday when we took an Uber to meet up with The Joneses and we attended the Bourbon, BBQ and Bluegrass event at MESDA (Museum of Early Southern Decorative Art), which is in Old Salem. To learn more about that event, you can read the entry from today’s edition of The Man Who Ate the Town: a Food Blog. It’s a good read. I promise.

From there The Joneses gave us a lift to The Garage (the Official Music Sponsor of The Less Deirables) where we watched Ronnie Levels & His Genius Band, Royal House and the EP release set of Doug Davis and the Solid Citizens. We enjoyed good music, good libations and good people. Always fun at The Garage, especially when Doug and his band of merry men (and Susan) are playing. All great music. We took Uber home, where we got a repeat of a past driver. We got home around 12:30a on Saturday morning.

Later that morning, we had to get up at 6:15am and go to Ardmore to take pictures for Second Harvest Food Bank at the Ardmore RAH! event. Ardmore RAH! (race against hunger) is a fun run, 5k and 10k along with a food drive benefiting, well, of course, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC. There were some fast runners in these races. Heck, even Ryan from Small Batch Beer finished the 10k in around forty-four minutes or so. That’s 6.21 miles in 44. Also, the Chick-Fil-A cow ran and finished somewhere in the top twenty or so. That was impressive. Several of the participants ran both the 5k and 10k runs. The same participant won both of them. Some people take their running seriously. I take it seriously if someone is chasing me with a knife and even then just for the first little bit. I’ll just have to fend them off with a stick or something. You’ll remember I wrote about my one and only 5k experience. If you don’t remember, you can read about it here.

Once we were done with our duties, we ate at a local cafe (no ‘accent’ in the name) in Ardmore and then went home. Once there we relaxed and tried to take a nap. It wasn’t very successful. I can’t really sleep without my CPAP so it was a lot of snoring, snorting and choking. The BCPF kept waking me because I was clearly struggling. She watched a shload of the television show Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe. She’s a sucker for him. Then she took a nap. We had plans for the night so we had to get up or we could have just lain about and not worried about anything else.

We met up with some of The BCPF‘s high school friends at Silo Bistro and Bar at Reynolda Village. When we got there we were pleasantly surprised to find our good friend Jerry Chapman playing a solo acoustic gig in the breezeway. We sat right in front of him as The BCPF and her friends enjoyed some catching up. I sang some backup with Jerry. We ate drank and determined it was time to go to a couple’s house who were also high school chums of the group. We were there for a few hours before it was time to call it a night.

It was a good weekend. Had the Steelers won on Sunday afternoon, that would have been better but the rest of the weekend was fantastic. Hectic but fantastic. Thanks for reading this and the food blog’s post.

(Not So) Silent Sunday or: It Was Silent Saturday

Salutations™!!

First I want to say that I am not bashing this town. I love this town. But, I equate it to being a parent to 3B. I support him in all that he does and don’t allow others to talk badly about him but I’ll be the first to point out when he’s done something stupid. That’s what I think happened yesterday. Now to give the story on that…

Yesterday was, obviously, the 4th of July. Independence Day. I know it’s a day for cookouts and family and friend gatherings and all that stuff. We did it. The BCPF and I went over to my ‘Rents’ place and had hot dogs with the fam. It was good. But, it was a daytime activity. We hung out for a while and then we went home. Watched a few things on Netflix and decided we needed to go out and grab some food and maybe have a drink or two.  It’s Saturday night after all. SATURDAY NIGHT!!

We noticed the streets were dead. No one was out. We went first to Twin City Diner. Closed. Across the street, Quiet Pint was closed. 1st Street Draught House, closed. We drove out to Silo Bistro and Bar. Closed. We saw people sitting at Pane e Vino and breathed a sigh of relief. We pulled in and got out of Nigel and started toward the entrance. A lovely lady that I am familiar with came out and told us in a very nice way that they were closed. I asked why? She said that most locally owned places wanted their employees to have the night off. I replied quite gruffly that that was stupid. So, I do want to apologize to Nicole for being an a-hole. She was being quite polite and I was out of line. So, to her, I apologize profusely.

So what are all the employees going to do? I don’t see everyone of them running to a cookout like some smart arse suggested. There’s nowhere to go! If this was a Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, I could understand this. But Friday and Saturdays are money-making days/nights. It’s a drinking holiday. It’s a birthday celebration. People go out for birthdays. I think it’s stupid to be closed. If you’re in business to provide service and make some money, you are open. You can’t make money if the lights aren’t on. You can say, “well it’s not about the money.” BULLSHITE!! It’s always about the money. You don’t go into business just because you love what you do. You go INTO the business of what you love to do. But, making money is the main motivator and if you say differently, you’re full of it. I had money to spend and other than Lowe’s Foods, no one got any of it. “Have you not worked in retail or restaurants during the fourth? It’s dead,” someone said. Yes, because you take all the options away when you don’t open.

I do know that a few of my favorite places, Finnigan’s Wake (Official Emerald Isle of The Less Desirables), Small Batch Beer (Presenting Sponsor of The Beer Dads Podcast) and maybe a few others around there were open. But, the bad part is that is squarely ground zero for Heavy Rebel Weekend and I stay as far away from that as possible. It’s great for them to have it but it isn’t my scene and not my crowd. I don’t want to be around that any more than Eugene wants to be around The World Cup. I mean, Finnigan’s is open on Christmas and Thanksgiving evenings. Like Opie says, “when you’re tired of your family, you have a place to go.” I wasn’t tired of my family but we had done our thing. And, I know it’s not just me. There are others looking for something to do that doesn’t require standing out in the open air getting eaten up by mosquitoes or other pests, grilling stuff and drinking half flat beer out of a keg pump and in Solo cups or something as ridiculous and mundane as Bud-anything. I find it hard to believe that I am the only one. Happy birthday ‘Merica, but you’ve made this town boring on your birthday.

I know this all may sound selfish but the most heck I got out of it was from the biggest “all about me and screw everyone else” person I know. So, I must have done something right. Again, I reiterate, I love this town, but yesterday, you let me down, WSNC.

It wasn’t a bad night, though, The BCPF and I went to Lowe’s Foods and got a rotisserie chicken, some many-layered salad something (she was kind enough to get rid of the onions for me) and some olives. I had vodka and dry vermouth at home, so I made my own dirty martinis and they were good. I enjoyed them. We watched more stuff on Netflix and enjoyed each others’ company. We always do, it would have just been better had we found a non-Heavy-Rebel-Weekend restaurant to share that with. Rant over. Soap box back in the corner.

Salutations™!!

Yesterday was a gloriously beautiful day. I first went to get my “getting-out-of-control” beard trimmed down at Washington Park Barber Shop. Check. Then The BCPF ate light and then went to Reynolda Gardens, walked a trail, walked through the gardens and then went by SILO Bistro (newly acquired by The Less Desirables Official Sponsor, King’s Crab Shack‘s, owners, Will Kingery and Norb Cooper) to have a beer. We took in the day and enjoyed each others’ company. So, this can truly be a Silent Sunday and I’ll leave a series of pics for you to enjoy. So… ENJOY!
