Salutations™!!

The BCPF and I actually went to Underdog Records on Friday instead of yesterday. Friday was her birthday. It may not seem like much, but I got a special advanced preview of the cheeseburger that will come from Mr. Barbecue with their opening TOMORROW!!! So, she can say she ate there before just about everyone else. I’m used to that. She isn’t. It was cool. Her birthday weekend has been great (according to her) and will culminate in me getting my “FauciOuchie” (C-19 vax) after I write this blog post. So, that means I need to get a move on… Here’s the haul:

Wilco – Being There — This was one of The BCPF’s birthday presents. She is a big Wilco fan. I can handle them in small doses. This is 19 songs, I may have to have a drink or two for it, but, hey! She has it. It gets its name from the 1979 film starring Peter Sellers and Shirley MacLaine. It’s self-produced by the band. 2×LP. New.

Guns N’ Roses – G N’ R Lies — I love “Patience” and I like a few of the other tunes on this “unofficial” release. I don’t know why they call it that. The album is definitely not without its controversy. A lot of homophobic and racial slurs being thrown around. I like this version of “You’re Crazy” better than the Appetite for Destruction version. Cream-colored vinyl. NM.

The Flying Burrito Bros – The Gilded Palace Of Sin — This album was #192 on the RS list that matters and fell to #463 on the one that doesn’t. I went back and looked at my review of it from 2015 and it seems mostly favorable. I don’t remember it, truthfully, but when I saw that Jonathan had a reissue of it, it triggered me to purchase it because I would just overlook it otherwise. So, now I have it. New.

She & Him – Volume One — The first album by M. Ward and the beautiful Zooey Deschanel. We did get to listen to that one on Friday. She sounds great and “young.” I like the classic/old-timey-ness of her voice and the music itself. The tracks were all written by her except for “You Really Got a Hold on Me,” “I Should Have Known Better,” “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” She co-wrote “Sweet Darlin'” with fellow actor/musician Jason Schwartzman. I liked it. New. The BCPF’s birthday present.

She & Him – Volume Two — The second album by M. Ward and Zooey. Again, she wrote all the songs except for two covers. I haven’t heard this one yet, but I can’t imagine me not liking it. New. The BCPF’s birthday present.

The Magnetic Fields – Get Lost — Original 1995 album release was on compact disc only. This is 180g and features an alternate song sequence. I haven’t heard it yet, but I can imagine it’s going to be weird, just like all other Magnetic Fields albums. New. The BCPF’s birthday present.

Calexico – Garden Ruin — This, the fifth studio album by the rock band Calexico, was released in 2006 and was the first Calexico album to feature no instrumental tracks, instead relying on a more direct, pop-style approach. Leaving behind the “indie-mariachi” genre, if you will, the band took their music in a different direction. This is a more straightforward indie rock album. One of The BCPF’s favorite bands, she had only ever had this on CD. New. Her birthday present.

Various – The Many Faces Of Prince (A Journey Through The Inner World Of Prince) — From what I can tell, these are songs that were written by Prince, possibly with the band before he broke big, 94 East, and some by the artists that made them famous, like Sheila E. doing “Glamorous Life” (which I never knew he wrote) or Chaka Khan’s “I Feel For You” which should have probably been “I Feel 4 U.” Also on this is Dead Or Alive’s cover of “Pop Life,” Heaven 17’s “Sign O’The Times”, Gary Numan doing “U Got The Look,” Information Society doing “Controversy” and Sigue Sigue Sputnik doing “I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man,” among others. 2×LP. Purple vinyl (of course). Import (I think).180g. NM.

Marvin Gaye – The Soulful Moods Of Marvin Gaye — Marvin Gaye. Good stuff. NM.

Neil Young – Trans — I don’t know anything about this album, other than it was a bit weird to long-time fans. The reason I got it, though? Jonathan’s note on the sales sticker: “Neil Young was never afraid to take a chance.” VG+.

Frank Zappa – Sheik Yerbouti — Mostly made up of live material recorded in 1977 and 1978, with later overdubs in the studio. I think it’s also a bit of a parody compared to the contemporaries of the time. I don’t know what to expect but I expect it to be, well… different. 2×LP. VG.

Aerosmith – Classics Live — Yeah, I know what you’re thinking. Yes, I do hate Aerosuck, but I couldn’t resist this when it was sitting there in the “freshly acquired” bin. It’s in VG+ condition and it should be in my collection. Now, it is.

Icehouse – Primitive Man — I love Icehouse’s later stuff, so I’m hoping I love their earlier stuff. This was their second album. So, wish me luck! VG+.

Starbuck – Moonlight Feels Right — The BCPF and I hear this song all the time on our Yacht Rock channels. I don’t know anything from the band other than the title track. Jonathan said there’s a 7″ in the sleeve as well and doesn’t know what the 7″ is or if it was ever part of the original packaging. I haven’t looked inside to know. But, I hope the rest of the album is like the title track. EX.

So, I think that Jonathan and I got a little closer to our podcast launch this week, but we still need a bit more hashing. Underdog Records is open, now, from Wednesday to Saturday 11a-7p and he’s still doing deliveries on Monday and Tuesday. Keep up on the Underdog Instagram account to see what he’s got for purchase. You can shop his entire new inventory day or night, 24/7 by visiting the Underdog Records website. Tell him I sent you! I use Discogs to track my collection as well as my friends’ collections. You should, too.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

“I sit here on the stairs cause I’d rather be alone. If I can’t have you right now, I’ll wait dear. Sometimes I get so tense but I can’t speed up the time. But you know love there’s one more thing to consider.” – “Patience” (Guns N Roses)

Salutations™!!

Yesterday was a great day! The BCPF and I got started a little early, went to breakfast, went to our favorite music store (possibly our favorite store of any ilk), we listened to great music, we went to Willows early and then we hung out with The Beer Dads’ extended family. Great times indeed. Here’s the haul:

Lone_Justice_-_Lone_Justice

©Geffen Records

  • R.E.M. – Green — The BCPF’s new addition, she said this was the first R.E.M. album that she bought new. I wasn’t into the band at the time, but “Stand” from this album is part of two stories that I tell. One is in my senior year in high school when I drew circles around the classroom (mimicking the video) and my teacher getting onto me. The other is that it was the first song I ever sang with the Vagabond Saints Society. New.
  • The Rolling Stones – Sticky Fingers — #64 on the RS list, it has always been a good album to me, even though I’ve never been a huge fan of the Stones. Big tunes are “Brown Sugar,” “Wild Horses,” “Sister Morphine” and “Bitch” which, by the way, Gene Simmons always said that “Deuce” was actually “Bitch” backward (the riff, that is). New.
  • Florence + The Machine – Ceremonials — We both had heard of F+Machine but didn’t really know much about them. This was there and is a fantastic 2xLP set. It’s like a lot of what The BCPF (especially) and I listen to, but the more modern version of it. Alternative-esque rock with electronic bite. I liked it. We both liked it, actually. VG++.
  • She & Him – Volume 3 — Who isn’t in love with Zooey Deschanel? Male or female. She’s just amazing. Plus, she can sing. I think Ma Mère would enjoy this album. She’s channeling all of her Leslie Gore/Dusty Springfield that she can muster. NM.
  • Rare Earth – Rarearth — Rare Earth was the first big hit-making act signed by Motown that consisted only of white members. This album came out in 1977. I’m not really familiar with the band outside of a couple of songs like “I Just Want to Celebrate” and “Hey Big Brother.” The latter I only know because it was our closing song on Apartment 5B this past week. VG++.
  • Joe Cocker – Joe Cocker! — Cocker’s second studio album, this album features numerous covers of songs originally performed by Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Leonard Cohen, John Sebastian, and Leon Russell. I liked Joe Cocker, although he could get on my nerves. It was a good listen, though.  VG+.
  • Bob Seger And The Silver Bullet Band – Night Moves — I have always maintained that there would be world peace without Bob Seger songs. But, Clay Howard has done a little work in trying to convert me and so, I am giving him another try with matured ears and I have to say it was a good album. However, I think I pinpointed the culprit of my dislike of him (well, outside of “Old Time Rock and Roll”). “Sunspot Baby” is that song. I hate that song and it is his screaming it the whole time that makes me despise hearing his voice (with the aforementioned OTRnR). But, the rest of the album is actually quite good, and dare I say it… enjoyable. VG+.
  • David Crosby / Graham Nash – Wind On The Water — Yet another of the many incarnations of the CSNY family tree. Yet another that we have, too. VG++.
  • Lone Justice – Lone Justice — I had never heard of Lone Justice but it was from 1985, had a Dexy’s Midnight Runners’ feel to the look and I decided to give it a spin. So, the band is a “cowpunk” band. They’re American (from Los Angeles), but cowpunk started in the UK. I had to look cowpunk up and here’s what I found: a subgenre of punk rock that began in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s and California in the early 1980s. It combines punk rock or new wave with country, folk, and blues in sound, subject matter, attitude, and style. Many of the musicians in this scene have now become associated with alternative country or roots rock. From the first tune, we picked up on the Dolly Parton influence which oddly enough was paired with Punk-styled music. There was definitely a twang that goes with the country genre but it was still rocking. It’s an interesting, heck I’ll say “good” listen. VG+.
  • Mason Jones, The Philarte Quartet – Mason Jones And The Philarte Quartet — “Quintet In E Flat Major, K. 407 for French Horn, Violin, 2 Violas and Cello” by Mozart and “Quartet For French Horn and String Quartet” by Bernhard Heiden. VG++.
  • Firefall – Luna Sea — We’re listening to this one as I write this. “Just Remember I Love You” is probably the biggest hit on this one. We have gotten more and more into Firefall since we’ve started listening to Yacht Rock Radio on SiriusXM. Also, Ma Père’s ringtone when Ma Mère calls him is “You Are the Woman” (not on this album). $1 bin find, but the record is in great shape. I’m going to go with VG/VG+.
  • Ella Fitzgerald And The Nelson Riddle Orchestra – The George And Ira Gershwin Songbook — 2xLP of Ella and Riddle doing Gershwin songs. $1 bin find. VG.

Again, a great day yesterday. Sunny, a good record-buying crowd coming in and just overall goodness of Saturday-ness. We had a great day. Jonathan had a few receivers and turntables that are in really great shape, you should check them out. Also, listen to each new episode The Less Desirables to hear what the TLD/UR special of the week is. And, I use Discogs to keep track of this vinyl madness that I bring to you.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

A lazy, snowy day in WSNC yesterday. It was great, though. It was cold enough to snow and the ground warm enough to not allow it to stick to the roads. They were navigatable and it was beautiful. The flakes were big and fluffy. The BCPF and I loved it. It was cool to stand in Underdog Records, talking records, life, music in general, everything. It was just cool. So, we walked out with this:

Phil_Collins_-_Face_Value

  • Belle And Sebastian – The Life Pursuit (The BCPF’s and my favorite B&S album; have looked for it for a while and Jonathan was able to finally get it off backorder; new)
  • She & Him – A Very She & Him Christmas (mmmm Zooey Deschanel; The BCPF has wanted this for a long time on vinyl and there it was!; new)
  • Dusty Springfield – You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me (VG+ copy)
  • David Bowie – Stage (2xLP live album from 1978; VG+)
  • The Grateful Dead – Steal Your Face (Okay Danielle, I’m going to try this; 2xLP VG+)
  • The Grateful Dead – The Best Of The Grateful Dead: Skeletons From The Closet (same here; VG+)
  • Traffic – Traffic (VG+)
  • W.A.S.P. – The Headless Children (VG+)
  • Various – The Stash Christmas Album (VG++)
  • Bob Marley & The Wailers Featuring Peter Tosh – The Birth Of A Legend (VG+)
  • Pretenders – The Singles (VG+)
  • Phil Collins – Face Value (have always loved PC and this album is amazing from beginning to end, VG++)
  • The Fixx – Reach The Beach (as I asked on my post about this album, why weren’t they bigger than they were? This band is amazing! VG++)
  • Tracey Ullman – You Broke My Heart In 17 Places (VG+)
  • Heart – Heart (spend a lot of time playing “bed drums” (pillows arranged to emulate a drum kit) with this album; VG+)
  • Pat Benatar – Seven The Hard Way (VG+)
  • Pat Benatar – Tropico (VG+)
  • Rolling Stones – Made In The Shade (VG+)
  • The Rolling Stones – Emotional Rescue (VG)
  • Sting – The Dream Of The Blue Turtles ($1 bin find but this joker is in VG+ condition)
  • Madonna – Like A Virgin ($1 bin find, but in great shape; VG+)
  • Firefall – Élan ($1 bin find; VG+)
  • The Living Presence Orchestra – Neapolitan Nights ($1 bin find; VG+)
  • Rimsky-Korsakov / The Philadelphia Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy – Scheherazade, Op. 35 ($1 bin find; VG)
  • Beethoven, Daniel Barenboim – Beethoven Sonatas: Pathetique – Les Adieux – Moonlight ($1 bin find; VG+)
  • Barbra Streisand – The Way We Were ($1 bin find; VG is the rating but it sounded great, probably closer to VG+)
  • Various – Season’s Greetings From Barbra Streisand…And Friends ($1 bin find; VG)
  • Saint-Saëns / Britten – Leonard Bernstein, New York Philharmonic – The Carnival Of The Animals / The Young Person’s Guide To The Orchestra (hopefully a better version of the “Carnival of the Animals” that I love so much; $1 bin find; VG+)
  • Leontyne Price, Richard Tucker, Rosalind Elias, Philip Maero, Erich Leinsdorf – Highlights From Madama Butterfly ($1 bin find; VG+)
  • Jethro Tull – M.U. – The Best Of Jethro Tull ($1 bin find; VG)
  • Foreigner – Head Games (this is pretty rough looking and I’m going to give it a listen through, Jonathan didn’t charge me for it as it’s in such a sad state and I may remove it if it’s not listenable; G)

So, there you have this week’s haul. Not a bad one, I don’t think. We have sure enjoyed listening to the five or six we got through yesterday (and into today). Right now you can get an additional 10% on a gift certificate (also a 45RPM record with a sticker, très chic!) to give to that record lover that you just don’t know what they have already (and don’t look at Discogs to find out). Jonathan has a few turntables, both new and used, in the store right now! Go check them out. And, if you haven’t noticed, I like Discogs, a lot!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

“Sukie was the kid, she liked to hang out in the graveyard. She did brass rubbings, she learned you never had to press hard. When she finished hanging out she was all alone. She decided that she better check in at home. There was an awful row between her mum and dad. They said she hadn’t done this, she hadn’t done that. If she wanted to remain inside the family home she’d have to tow the line, she’d have to give it a go. It didn’t suit Sukie, so she took her things and left.” – “Sukie in the Graveyard” (Kildea/Geddes/Cooke/Colburn/Martin/Jackson/Murdoch
