Salutations™!!

Lots of busy, busy, busy this past weekend. Started on Friday when we took an Uber to meet up with The Joneses and we attended the Bourbon, BBQ and Bluegrass event at MESDA (Museum of Early Southern Decorative Art), which is in Old Salem. To learn more about that event, you can read the entry from today’s edition of The Man Who Ate the Town: a Food Blog. It’s a good read. I promise.

From there The Joneses gave us a lift to The Garage (the Official Music Sponsor of The Less Deirables) where we watched Ronnie Levels & His Genius Band, Royal House and the EP release set of Doug Davis and the Solid Citizens. We enjoyed good music, good libations and good people. Always fun at The Garage, especially when Doug and his band of merry men (and Susan) are playing. All great music. We took Uber home, where we got a repeat of a past driver. We got home around 12:30a on Saturday morning.

Later that morning, we had to get up at 6:15am and go to Ardmore to take pictures for Second Harvest Food Bank at the Ardmore RAH! event. Ardmore RAH! (race against hunger) is a fun run, 5k and 10k along with a food drive benefiting, well, of course, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC. There were some fast runners in these races. Heck, even Ryan from Small Batch Beer finished the 10k in around forty-four minutes or so. That’s 6.21 miles in 44. Also, the Chick-Fil-A cow ran and finished somewhere in the top twenty or so. That was impressive. Several of the participants ran both the 5k and 10k runs. The same participant won both of them. Some people take their running seriously. I take it seriously if someone is chasing me with a knife and even then just for the first little bit. I’ll just have to fend them off with a stick or something. You’ll remember I wrote about my one and only 5k experience. If you don’t remember, you can read about it here.

Once we were done with our duties, we ate at a local cafe (no ‘accent’ in the name) in Ardmore and then went home. Once there we relaxed and tried to take a nap. It wasn’t very successful. I can’t really sleep without my CPAP so it was a lot of snoring, snorting and choking. The BCPF kept waking me because I was clearly struggling. She watched a shload of the television show Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe. She’s a sucker for him. Then she took a nap. We had plans for the night so we had to get up or we could have just lain about and not worried about anything else.

We met up with some of The BCPF‘s high school friends at Silo Bistro and Bar at Reynolda Village. When we got there we were pleasantly surprised to find our good friend Jerry Chapman playing a solo acoustic gig in the breezeway. We sat right in front of him as The BCPF and her friends enjoyed some catching up. I sang some backup with Jerry. We ate drank and determined it was time to go to a couple’s house who were also high school chums of the group. We were there for a few hours before it was time to call it a night.

It was a good weekend. Had the Steelers won on Sunday afternoon, that would have been better but the rest of the weekend was fantastic. Hectic but fantastic. Thanks for reading this and the food blog’s post.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

So there was a lot going on this weekend. I’m only going to skim the surface and talk more about the events this week.

Friday, it was Bourbon, BBQ and Bluegrass at Old Salem, then on to The Garage (the Official Music Sponsor of The Less Desirables) for the Doug Davis and Solid Citizens’ EP release show.

Saturday morning it was up at 6:15 (on a Saturday morning) to take pics for 12033183_10153580918175490_7823950924428031854_nSecond Harvest Food Bank at the Ardmore RAH! event. Followed by breakfast and home for very sleep-lacking “naps” and then dinner with some of The BCPF‘s old high school friends at Silo Bistro and Bar with a surprise musical bonus: the awesome Jerry Chapman was playing and we sat outside and listened to him play. I sang some back up from the comfort of my chair (you can see how close we were to him). Then that group moved to another of her HS friends’ house.

This morning it was up early (well 8am-ish) to check-in on my fantasy football team to make sure I had no players for the 9:30 game (only shown on Yahoo!… more on that this week, too).  So, it’s been busy but good. Fun times.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

City of Winston-Salem, Hunger Action, Hunger Action Month, Second Harvest Food Bank, The Less Desirables

Salutations™!!

The entire month of September is National Hunger Awareness Month. Today, September 3, 2015 is Hunger Awareness Day. Throughout Hunger Action Month, Second Harvest Food Bank will be asking everyone to do one simple thing: Make the commitment to tell someone about hunger.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC released the following statement:

“So many people that we speak with are shocked to learn how significant a problem hunger is right here in our community,” said Jenny Moore, Marketing and PR manager for Second Harvest Food Bank. “What we’ve witnessed over and over again is that once people know, they find ways to help. Awareness is key. That’s why we’re asking everyone we know to pledge to tell someone about hunger.”11986313_10153480829630490_3550572370075143255_n

A number of special events being held in September will provide an opportunity for interested individuals and groups to connect with others who are invested in supporting and creating solutions to address the persistent problem of hunger plaguing our communities. Anyone interested in learning more about these events can visit Second Harvest’s website at hungernwnc.org for details. Second Harvest has also posted a variety of tools to their site to a make it easy to take part in Hunger Action Month and tell others about hunger. There will be places in Winston-Salem that will display orange lights TLD Hunger Actionin honor of this campaign. Places such as the Nissen Building on 4th Street, Winston-Salem Foundation and City of Winston-Salem’s City Hall just to name a few.

I’ve been involved, as well. I wore my orange t-shirt today, which makes me look like the Great Pumpkin or a giant traffic cone, but I love this shirt and wear it often. I made sure it was worn today. Also, The Less Desirables paired its usual TLD green with orange to show solidarity with making more aware of hunger. You know what you can do? You can commit to making at least ONE person aware of hunger. As Jenny said above, “awareness is key.” You can pledge to do so by visiting the link here. This is not asking for money, just that you’ll tell someone. Help however you can.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

So, I went to have my ultrasound done today, my echo-cardiogram, and the good news is I’m not pregnant!  Um, wait wrong ultrasound. My heart, according to the technician, looked pretty good.  Now, that doesn’t mean much of anything because it has to be viewed by the cardiologist to be official. So the word is “officially” still out. But, all the extra salads, strawberries, blueberries, fish, etc. I’ve been eating in addition to trying to take extra steps in the day (stairs instead of elevator, walking to accessible places downtown instead of driving, etc.) must be paying off, at least as far as I can tell.

Now that that is out of the way, I’m going to move on to the other topic for today: Empty Bowls.  Empty Bowls is the big fundraising event of the year for Second Harvest Food Bank. I’m not going to spend a lot of time going into details about hunger, because really you should already know that there are families here in our community that are hungry. I don’t mean they just have a hankerin’, I mean that they take turns in the family eating. Maybe it’s the kids, Scotty and Sally today (yes, just once) and Mom and Dad tomorrow, or they’re the kids on the block that are not happy it’s the weekend and they’re out of school. At least in school they get breakfast and lunch of some kind. Dear Reader, there are people that are truly starving in our community, perhaps your next door neighbor.

Empty Bowls will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, April 22 from 11-2 and you can still get tickets (before 5pm 4/21/15) for $25 in advance by going to hungernwnc.org. Any tickets you buy will be held at Will Call. After 5pm, it’s $35 and you’ll have to purchase them at the door. It’s held at the Millennium Center in Downtown Winston-Salem. There will be shuttle service from the parking lot (First Presbyterian Church on Cherry/Marshall) to the Millennium Center. What do you get for your money?  One, you’re helping a great cause. Two, you get soup from awesome restaurants around town. Three, you get to take home a piece of art; a bowl made by local artisans. It’s a great cause and somehow I pulled off being called a “celebrity server.” I’m going to be a “Floor Ambassador” from 1030-1230 (until…) so I’ll be schmoozing people up whilst they enjoy the event. There are other community celebs, such as, Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines, Chad Nance of Camel City Dispatch, local TV personalities, food people, etc. Really, you shouldn’t miss it. You can read the write up I did for The Man Who Ate the Town: A Food Blog by clicking here.

So I hope to see you all out there. ALL of you! Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

RiverRun is in full swing. We went to the “opening” gala on Friday. We had a short conversation with Bill Pullman, watched Robert Townsend dance it like crazy with a lovely woman, watched the Winston-Salem Journal’s Michael Hewlett and Lynn Felder dance up a storm, too. We saw Camel City Dispatch’s Chad Nance with full-hair down with a corduroy blazer. Drank some Topo and wine.  Good times.  Before that, we had beer and dinner with Michael and Laura Slawter at The Porch. That’s such a great restaurant and now that they’ve gone full table service, it’s even better.

Winston-Salem Symphony Pre Show

On Saturaday, The BCPF and I went to Underdog Records for National Record Store Day. She bought the new Belle & Sebastian and I bought the RSD reissue pressing of Springsteen’s Born in the USA on (YES EUG) 180 gram black vinyl, as well as a used copy of Zenyatta Mondatta from The Police. It’s always good to see Jonathan Hodges, the owner of Underdog Records. We then stopped by Twin City Hive to collect something for Second Harvest Food Bank’s “Empty Bowls” event’s silent auction. We then went to Black Mountain Chocolate to do the same.  Then it was home to watch some Keeping Up Appearances as we love Britcoms.

Then we went to see the Winston-Salem Symphony do Led Zeppelin with Jeans ‘n Classics. Always fun to watch J. Alexandra Johnson, cellist extraordinaire and 3B’s orchestra teacher, Fabrice Dharamraj do their thing and it was great with a live band as they played some Zeppelin tunes.  Good stuff.  We then came home and watched more Keeping Up Appearances.  I love me some Hyacinth Bucket.

Anyway, great weekend. Talk to you tomorrow, same blog channel…
