Salutations™!!

Today is the 10th anniversary of The Less Desirables’ first-ever episode, both recording and airing. February 3, 2010, was a Wednesday and I went to the area between Reynolda Road, Silas Creek Parkway and Wake Forest Road and picked up Brian from work as his car was in the shop.

10 Years Old Today (the podcast, not the logo)

I took him to my house only to realize that I didn’t have the right mic or mic cable in my house for more than one person to talk. So, we had to run over to where the bands that I had been in had practiced and grabbed the right mic and cable and headed back to my house.

We sat in the “media room” (what is now 3B’s room) and looked at each other. “What are we going to talk about?” I asked. “I don’t know,” he said. I replied, “I tell you what… I’ll hit the record button and we’ll just see what happens. If we don’t like it, we can try again.”

The point was to have a 20-minute podcast, this newfangled kind of “radio-on-demand” or recorded audio thingy because 20 minutes is about the length of an average commute here in the Triad. Some are longer, some are shorter, but it’s about average at 20. How we were going to come up with something to talk about for 20 minutes was wracking our brains.

I hit the button. 38 minutes later, the first one was recorded. An hour later it was on a web server and I had half-arsed written an RSS feed, the best I could figure, and was ready for people to listen to. I don’t know that anyone did. I still don’t know if they hear them now. I just know that there are plenty of downloads. That first one was a bit rough and I think neither Brian nor myself would argue that.

It wasn’t fascinating stuff. But, you know what? Few people were doing it. We essentially had our own radio program, a morning-type show, and we were proud of that. And, here we are 10 years later and I am still proud of what we did that first day and all 520 episodes since. I am pretty sure Brian would agree with that.

This Wednesday will be the 10th-anniversary recording, number 521. I know that Eugene, Caitlin, Beer Guru Jay Platt, Danielle and Bethany will be there. There is a slim chance that Brian and Bruce will come but I’m not really sure. I’d love to have all of us in a room at once. Heck, it would be great if Superfan Damien could be here, too. But, he’s all the way out in Super Bowl Champion World (that’s Kansas City). It would be great, though. That first show even predates The BCPF by a few months.

Without that first show, there probably wouldn’t be any Fan Interference, any Camel City Dispatch News Hour, Tart & Tangy Triad, The Beer Dads, The Man Who Ate the Town, Apartment 5B, Sipping NC: The Art of Drinking, or Beeswax Vinyl & More. No The Less Desirables Network. No, Rule 1 Podcast, Owner’s Manual, No Mask No Cape Podcast, Forsyth Mags Podcast, Open the Blue Door Podcast, Wine About Real Estate Podcast, Margaret’s SpeakEasy Podcast, Transformative Conversations Podcast, Lunch Link Podcast, Thrive with Dara and Garth, or any of the ones that I should be starting in the next few weeks.

I’m not saying that none of these last group of podcasts wouldn’t be there, I’m just saying that I wouldn’t be the one making them happen if it weren’t for the first-ever recording of The Less Desirables 10 years ago today. I wouldn’t be called “the Podfather.”

When I started this journey in 2010, no one knew what a podcast was. I had to explain around seven times a day what it was. Now, I only have to explain it once every seven days. Now, almost literally everyone has a podcast and when people around here want to start one, they at least come to me first. That makes me feel good. It makes me feel important. It makes me feel like I truly am the “father” of the podcast culture around this area.

All this because Brian and I sat in a room in my house and made stuff up for about 40 minutes. Since that first day, there is only one thing that has stayed constant since the very first show. Not me, I haven’t been on every show. Not Brian, he left in 2014. Most would think it is the theme song (which I wrote, by the way). Nope to all of that. The only thing constant since the first-ever show (which was recorded on that day) is the disclaimer at the very end. It still has Brian’s voice on it, here, five and a half years since his leaving. So, even though he’s not here, he’s here every week.

If you’d like to hear this (very rough) first episode, you can do so here. Listen to that one and then listen to the one this week and hear the difference.

Well, here’s to another 10 years (at least) of The Less Desirables and The Less Desirables Podcast Network. Thank you for listening and reading…

Until tomorrow, same pod channel at some pod time (your choice)…

Salutations™!!

I love my job. I love all my jobs. I don’t do things that I don’t enjoy. Not anymore.

For many years I was the office manager/VP of my parents’ company. I loved that job, although they would probably not agree with me. Now, don’t get me wrong. I hated the industry. I hated trucking and I hated sand. But, I liked the business aspect of it.

I almost purchased a now-prominent restaurant in town and I would have loved that.

I briefly owned a comic book store. I loved that because I have always been a fan of comics.

I have been a musician most of my life, at least 34 years. I loved being in those bands (most of the time… and when I didn’t, I wasn’t in that band).Clients061819

I love being The Man Who Ate the Town. I love that restaurants trust me in promoting, talking about, photographing and eating their food. I really love that job.

I love talking for a living. Podcasting, voice-overs, announcing, emceeing, etc.

And, I love producing podcasts for others. I love getting them conceived. I love getting them started. I love the look on the faces of the clients when they hear their product and the sigh of relief when they can breathe after that first one and in some cases after the 20th one. Producing podcasts and consulting with companies that want to do them, is how I truly make a living. The Less Desirables Network is my fun time and with the exception of Fan Interference and Apartment 5B, I don’t get paid for producing them. I do get paid with sponsorships for some of the podcasts on the network but the production and consultations are my real paycheck.

I spend anywhere from 15-25 hours a week producing for others and about 10 producing the TLD Network shows. The other 5-20 hours a week is in blogging, doing voice-overs, eating, taking food photos, meeting with folks about podcasts, how I can help in the community, networking and so on. As I always say, if I’m awake, I’m working. Whether others would consider it working or not. Heck, even I don’t consider it work. I never go to “work.” I go do what it is that I do and do it darn well if I do say so myself.

Anywhat! Going back and checking what it is that I do, I realized that there are 10 companies that I either produce for or have helped with consulting for their podcasts. I have meetings set up over the next few weeks for even more. I love what I do and I love the folks that help me contribute to the integrity of my household by trusting me with their brand and voice. Thanks so much to Ty Collins & Hailey Brooke McFadden; Jeff Evans & Rory; Dara & Garth; Kerri Sigler; Will Lewis & Ken Coopwood; Elizabeth Nance, Jodi Tate, Julie Aites Campbell, Lorraine Howard, Billy Bjorklund, Kim Vestal; Kate Reece; Dr. Shawn Ricks; James Taylor; Kayla Bell, Michelle Bell & Heather Scherer. I love working with you all.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Today was an up-and-down, topsy-turvy kind of day, Dear Reader. I was still flying high from Saturday’s Cobras game and then the relaxing, laid-back nature of the day yesterday, along with some yard-sitting. Rule1logonew

Today, I had all my podcasts, save one, cancel so, it was to be an easy day.

The podcast I did was the Rule One Podcast, and we know that while there are humorous aspects to this podcast, the subject matter is very serious. It’s about addiction and can be for several things, but mostly drugs since Kerri Sigler is the founder of Phoenix Rising and the WS Drug Court.

The subject was tough. We had a young mother, whom we call “Nicole,” talking about how she got into drugs, what she did to try to get off of them and how she’s now been stripped of her rights as a parent. It was heartbreaking listening to her story.

A lot of people ask how can your child not be enough!? How can you still do drugs when you’ll lose them!?

Those are unfair questions. Addiction doesn’t work that way. Addiction doesn’t care what the consequences are. Well, she could not take them. No, that doesn’t work either. When a 12-year old girl is introduced to drugs by an aunt, someone she should trust, and that continues on into her teens and then the parents of the boyfriend (baby daddy) introduces a late-teen already hooked on stuff to crushed-up pain pills and how to snort them, there’s nowhere for that child to go. Okay, run away! When that is your lifestyle, you don’t know to run away. Stop being an insensitive f**k!

She admitted the only person in her family that wasn’t an addict was her mother, who was partially disabled. Listening to her story and hearing the emotions was hard. I never fully recovered all day.

3B had fallen asleep at his mom’s for Easter dinner but was supposed to be with me yesterday. He doesn’t have his after-nines (driving after 9pm), yet and while he is allowed to drive after nine for work or school, this was neither. So, I didn’t get to see him yesterday and he worked today so I didn’t get to see him today. Just hearing “Nicole’s” story, I wanted to hug him, badly. But, I also know that he’s growing up and my time of seeing him is going to get shorter and shorter and he’ll be off to school (hopefully) after this and I will see him even less.

It makes me realize how my parents feel when I don’t see them as often as I could. I mean, they live right next door. But, my regular schedule (and theirs), keeps me busy and harder to get by there. Reminds me of a song…

You can hear the episode HERE.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

After a long weekend, I had a very full day at work today. To let you know the process, I prepare the talking points for The Man Who Ate the Town on Monday mornings. That can take a while or not. Usually yes.

Then I had a session with Kerri Sigler and the Phoenix Rising “Rule One Podcast.” Then we recorded TMWATT with a special guest, Chef Richard Miller. Then before we were completely done, Hailey Brooke and TC came from Fan Interference as we did a Skype interview with a current NFL player (you’ll hear that on Wednesday). Then we recorded a Skype interview on The Beer Dads (you’ll hear that next two Mondays).

So, there was a lot of podcast happening today. I’m tired, but I love days like this, as I’ve said. You can listen to what was going on (mostly) here:

Salutations™!!

Whew! I tell you what, Dear Reader. I’m tired. I’m worn out. My eyes are nearly crossed. It was one of those weeks where we either recorded or published all five podcasts on The Less Desirables Network. Also, I produced the Rule One Podcast on Monday and this morning, after being at the studio until nearly 11pm last night, I was in the studio at 730am and prepping for the newest venture, which I can’t tell you about until tomorrow at the earliest. That was a few hours long and I’ll be back in the studio in the morning at 9am to finish up with the work with that. I have the Thrive podcast to produce this week, too. TLDNetwork

I sat in the studio this afternoon, prepping for The Less Desirables and noticing how tired I was, not only because of the long work day/early arrival but that I didn’t go to bed until 2am. It was then I was like I wish I had this problem every single day. I love what I do. I know I say that a lot, but it’s true. I love what I do. Anywhat!

I have to get going because, again, I’m tired and I have an early day tomorrow. If you’re interested in the podcast episodes from this week, here ya go:

Salutations™!!

Today started the 2019 podcast season for Such-N-Such Media (which is the company that I along with a few others familiar to the TLD family own). That includes recording our own network podcast and producing podcasts for others. Today was a heck of a start, too. We recorded the first episodes, each, of Rule One Podcast, The Man Who Ate the Town and The Beer Dads.SNSMedia

Tomorrow, I will record Apartment 5B, but also have meetings about one other podcast as well as doing a recording for something totally unrelated. Then on Wednesday, of course, it will be The Less Desirables, but also, Fan Interference starts its very own Wednesday run. Come Thursday, I have another meeting about yet another podcast and I will produce the Thrive Podcast with Dara and Garth on Friday after my The Best Damn Referral Group meeting.

I look so forward to all this work. It’s paying off, too. I’m making a little bit of money doing what I love doing and it’s about danged time. I hope you enjoy listening to today’s podcasts. You can hear them all here: Rule One Podcast, The Man Who Ate the Town and The Beer Dads.

Until tomorrow, happy podcast listening…

Salutations™!!

It has finally happened. I have been trying to submit The Less Desirables (the whole network really), to show up in Spotify for about four months, now. For whatever reason, it wasn’t showing up. Today, my friend Kandi (who is on the developers’ group) told me they got their shite together and I should try it again.

I submitted all five TLD Network shows (TLD, The Beer Dads, Fan Interference, The Man Who Ate the Town, and Apartment 5B) and Rule One: A Phoenix Rising Podcast and all six of them were accepted and you can now, and I say FINALLY, listen to all of them on Spotify. I’ve been asked about it for a while and I just kept saying, “I’m trying…”

I can stop trying. They’re on there. I’m happy and proud of this. It’s more availability of the shows and that’s a good thing!

So, I know a lot of you are Spotify listeners and now you can listen to our podcast goodness. Just look up the names, I can confirm they’re all there. I checked. Or…
