Salutations™!!

It was cold as all get out yesterday when The BCPF and I took to the streets to do our “Saturday Thang.” Near, if not in, the 60s the day before, it was at around 34° or so as we went to Underdog Records. Brrrrrr! But, we got to warm up with some great music. Let’s hit it.At_Last_-_Etta_James

  • Big Star – Radio City – Local ties all around this album. I know it’s a favorite of many of the musical circles in town and some of them even had some things to do with the band itself. It’s #405 on the RS List and you know what? It’s a fantastic album. New.
  • Run-D.M.C. – Run-D.M.C. – One of the pioneering rap albums that set that whole genre on fire. It’s #242 on the RS List. New.
  • Etta James – At Last! – The first time I heard this woman’s voice I was smitten. She’s so powerful and soulful. It’s easy to see where Amy Winehouse got her inspiration. Great album coming in at #119 on the RS List. New.
  • Count Basie Orchestra – Basie Picks The Winners – VG copy.
  • Stan Getz / Charlie Byrd – Jazz Samba – I loved the Getz/Gilberto album that we got last year, even more so than the first time I heard it. I missed out on the second album from that duo, but I think I’ll dig this one. VG+.
  • Berlin – Love Life – I’m listening to this as I write this post. It’s a good new wave/pop record. Good stuff. I’ve always loved Terri Nunn’s voice (and she’s cute). VG+.
  • Ray Parker Jr. – The Other Woman – Yep, I love some cheese. Parker Jr., though, is a really good guitar player. He has been a session player for some big names in music like Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Boz Scaggs, David Foster and Herbie Hancock. He also wrote a lot of hits for others like “Mr. Telephone Man” for New Edition and so on. VG+.
  • Ray Parker Jr. And Raydio – A Woman Needs Love – Ditto. VG+.
  • Stephen Foster, Jan Degaetani, Leslie Guinn – Songs By Stephen Foster (1826-1864) – VG+.
  • Stephen Stills & Manassas – Down The Road – One of two albums Stills made with this band after the break up of CSN. VG+
  • Elvis Presley – Seine 40 Grössten Hits – A 2xLP German-released greatest hits album. Disappointingly, he’s not doing the songs in German. VG+.
  • Benjamin Britten, Peter Pears, London Symphony Orchestra – Nocturne – Four Sea Interludes – Passacaglia (Peter Grimes) – The BCPF was excited about this one. VG+.
  • Cole Porter – American Musicals: Kiss Me, Kate/Can-Can/Anything Goes – 3xLP of highlights from Porter’s musical forays. VG+. $1 bin find.
  • Nat King Cole – The Man And His Music – Because we grab anything we can with Nat King Cole on it, and it was only $1 and a 2xLP at that. It’s in fairly good condition, too.
  • There was another Benjamin Britten that we got but it’s not in Discogs and I’ll have to enter it along with about four or five others that take about 30-45 minutes each to put all that info in (especially hard when their in foreign languages) and it’s not easy to find info on some of those things. A headache. For the record, I think I’ve only purchased one album that I had to put in. She has purchased the rest… sigh… I kid.

Just this week, Jonathan got in a set of Bose speakers and a JVC receiver that were in good shape, he sold the speakers pretty quickly. But, he is always getting groovy record gear in and it’s there for the taking. Follow Underdog Records on Instagram to get the latest of what’s going out there. He posts new releases, freshly obtained used vinyl and other record-related info. Jonathan, like Clay Howard, Jerry Chapman and myself all use Discogs to keep up with our collection and share with others. Plus, the Discogs Marketplace is pretty banging, too.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

This week’s haul spans several days as we visited Underdog Records on Tuesday upon our return from Raleigh, seeing Belle and Sebastian. So it’s extra long today. Let’s hit it!

  • Kiss, Peter Criss – Peter Criss (purchased off of Discogs because it’s on back order and rumor has it that the company isn’t pressing them anymore, new, sealed)
  • Kiss, Paul Stanley – Paul Stanley (used original pressing that I purchased off of Discogs for the same reason as above. I also have a picture disc that I’m looking to sell. It’s in VG++ condition, this is VG+. This is also missing the poster… argh!!)
  • The Velvet Underground & Nico – The Velvet Underground & Nico (I hate this album but it is classic and needs to be in a collection, new reissue)
  • Talking Heads – Speaking In Tongues (freshly used still in original sleeve bag with hype stickers)
  • Donovan – For Little Ones (part two of a two-record set, we got the first last week)
  • Squeeze – Frank
  • The Rolling Stones – Between The Buttons (early stereo pressing)
  • Squeeze – Sweets From A Stranger
  • Peter, Paul And Mary* – In The Wind
  • The Doobie Brothers – Best Of The Doobies
  • Elton John – Blue Moves ($1 bin find – some liquid damage to the cover but it actually looked like it belonged there and the vinyl is in really good shape)
  • Ray Parker Jr. – Greatest Hits
  • Aretha Franklin – Aretha’s Gold
  • Nat King Cole – Ramblin’ Rose
  • Various – A Chorus Line – Original Cast Recording
  • David Bowie – Let’s Dance
  • Various – 41 Original Hits From The Sound Track Of American Graffiti
  • 101 Strings – 101 Strings Play Songs Of France (because we are both enamored with just about anything French)
  • Echo & The Bunnymen – Ocean Rain (new)
  • Kraftwerk – Trans Europe Express (reissue, new)
  • Sonic Youth – Goo (2xLP box set, which is pretty cool)
  • Buddy Holly – Reminiscing (sealed)
  • Windham Hill Artists – A Winter’s Solstice
  • Donovan – Donovan’s Greatest Hits
  • Harry Chapin – Verities & Balderdash (NM copy)
  • Tony Bennett – All Time Greatest Hits (2xLP VG++)
  • Frank Mills – Music Box Dancer
  • Chicago – Chicago At Carnegie Hall (Volumes I, II, III And IV) (Jonathan said he rarely, if ever, sees the full collection, just bits and pieces. This is the complete box set in VG++ condition with all posters and materials. Great find)
  • Aerosmith – Rocks (Meh, it was $1)
  • Hot Tuna – Burgers
  • Jackson Browne – Running On Empty
  • Steely Dan – The Royal Scam
  • Kingston Trio – The Kingston Trio
  • The Kingston Trio – String Along
  • Carpenters – Close To You
  • Streisand, Kristofferson – A Star Is Born
  • Henry Mancini – 10 – Original Motion Picture Sound Track
  • John Cougar Mellencamp – Uh-Huh
  • Simon & Garfunkel – Vol. 1: New Gold Disc (Weird import from the Philippines with faded, probably copied cover art, it sounds pretty good and has a decent track listing and was only $1)
  • Pink Floyd – Meddle
  • Glenn Miller And His Orchestra – Glenn Miller – A Memorial 1944-1969 (2xLP Mono pressing that was only $1 but is in really good shape. I’d say VG/VG+)

So, as you can see, that’s a pretty good haul. Some stuff we’re really excited to get, some we just needed for the collection and some “must haves.” It’s always fun to go in Underdog Records. We have a little community that we’ve formed being customers over there. I know Jonathan has a few quality turntables for sale in the store right now and some receivers and speakers, as well. If you’re looking to get into vinyl for the first time, or again, or just want/need to upgrade your setup, then you’ve choices over there. And, we all use Discogs to manage and archive our collection (and to provide you links for this blog).

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Friday night was a blast! As Media Sponsor for RiverRun International Film Festival, I get passes to almost all of the parties and events. We decided that Friday, we were going to go the cocktail reception event that happened almost every night of the festival, get a drink or three and what was going on and see who we knew. We met up with our pals the Dyers and their friend Nancy. I asked what they were doing and they said going to the pass

holder’s lounge and then to the Spark party. Cool, we didn’t have plans so we’d go to the pass holder’s lounge with them and check to see if my credentials got me into the Spark party.

The pass holder’s lounge is actually RiverRun’s office which happens to be in the same building (currently) as The Less Desirables Studios. I like free beer, and it’s a decent beer, but I was kind of over with Stella. I invited the Dyers and Nancy to head down and raid the TLD fridge for some craft brews, instead. We all went down, The BCPF took her wine down and we all sat in the studio drinking beer. I needed to clear room in that fridge anyways. Nancy went back up to RiverRun to fill The BCPF’s glass and when she came back (I had to let her in), she had gained a friend along the way. His name was Nathan and he’s a film maker that was involved with the film. So, he wanted to eat his salad and we gave him a beer. Turns out he’s a bass player, he handed me a pick that had his name and such on it, kind of like his business card. Cool stuff. I’m a bass player and we left it at that. Spark party happened and we took turns hanging in the photo booth getting a bit tipsy and having a good time.

Saturday, The BCPF and I had to get to our accountant’s office to sign our e-file forms for taxes. We then went into downtown WSNC and I took her to Eclectibles Shop, a little antiques/bookstore/and curiosity shop. The BCPF loves stuff like that and I heard they had

vinyl in the basement. I didn’t buy vinyl, but I did purchase three songbooks. One was the original Broadway edition, vocal and instrumental, score for Grease, the Phil Collins Anthology and “Songs from the 70s.” We then had breakfast at Mary’s Gourmet Diner and walked around downtown a bit. We stopped at the Artivity on the Green and sat on a bench watching people enjoying the park. I know I’ve said it before, but I really want to retract my statement about not like it. I see the people enjoying it, the wonder they have about and what it does for the community. It’s alright in my book. Then we went home for a while before having dinner at DiLisio’s Italian Restaurant. Then, we went back home and watched the rest of the first season of  Mad Men, our latest binge.

After about 1am, The BCPF had had enough and went to bed. I put on my headphones, cranked up Rhapsody and went through some Phil Collins songs. One of my favorite songs is “Easy Lover” by Collins and Philip Bailey. As I was looking at the songwriting credits, it said it was written by Phil Collins, Philip Bailey and Nathan East. Hmmm. Why does that name sound so familiar to me? Nathan East. Hey! Wait a minute. I looked up Nathan East on Wikipedia and who do I see there? The same Nathan that was just a little over 24 hours prior, sitting in my studio drinking one of my beers with me and the gang. So, I had someone who has platinum albums (with Fourplay), has written songs with Phil Collins (and Philip Bailey), toured with Michael McDonald, Stevie Wonder, Chuck Loeb and Ray Parker, Jr. in my studio, eating a salad and drinking my beer. He’s also toured with Eric Clapton and is the bass player featured on the famous MTV Unplugged featuring Eric Clapton. Whoa! And, I had no idea who he was, then. Still, it was awesome after the fact, too.

So my weekend was great. How was yours?

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
