Salutations™!!

Yesterday was the start of the $1 sale at Underdog Records. Jonathan and De put out around 3,000 records Friday night after work. Jonathan estimates around 1600 of those went out yesterday during the sale. Some people walked out with over 200 records yesterday. The place was a madhouse and I loved seeing it like that. Here’s our modest haul, by comparison:

©Warner Bros.

  • Lou Reed – The Blue Mask — This was not $1. It was found as we waited in line to purchase what we had already gotten. It was Reed’s 11th studio album. This was okay. It’s not my area of expertise for him. To me, nothing beats Transformer and Berlin from Lou. VG+.
  • The Police – Synchronicity — I know what you’re thinking, dude, you already have this album. You would be correct. There’s a special thing about this album. On vinyl, in 1983, there were around 93 different variants of the cover of this album. Some were blue, red, yellow (BRY), others were (RYB) and then others, still were (YBR), on top of that, in each color scheme, different pictures showed the band members in various orders and in various pictures. No, I’m not looking to have 93 different variants of this album. I am however looking for 30 different variants. I have three right now. I thought I had a fourth but it was a duplicate. Boo hiss. This is BRY and is Sting/Stewart/Andy with the textsheet to the left. VG+.

The rest of these are $1 records and are assumed to be graded VG unless otherwise noted:

  • The Police – Synchronicity — Yep, we found another and it was the first RYB that I had seen. This is Andy/Sting/Stewart with tub on the right. That’s how it is designated. VG+.
  • Richie Havens – Connections — Looks to be his 13th studio album.
  • The Ambrosian Singers And Players – The Cries Of London – Music In Honor Of Queen Elizabeth I — We love stuff that has to do with England and UK. VG+.
  • Various – Scottish Pipes — See previous entry explanation except for VG-.
  • Chicago – Chicago 19 — Their 16th studio album (yeah, I know what you’re thinking but they continued to count studio and live albums in the sequence) the second with Jason Schiff replacing Peter Cetera. VG+
  • Gordon Jenkins And His Orchestra – France – 70 — You know we love our French music, too. We find all kinds of reasons to own anything we can French.
  • Igor Stravinsky – Columbia Symphony Orchestra – Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky: The Firebird — We got this one and another version of the same piece, but I don’t think Stravinsky conducted it. It isn’t in Discogs, so I’ll need to put it in myself.
  • Nat King Cole – A Many Splendored Thing — The BCPF loves anything Nat King Cole, so yes.
  • The Montevideo Singing Strings – I Love Paris — And so do we. From 1964. VG-.
  • Arthur Fiedler And The Boston Pops – Play The Music Of Paul Simon — Paul Simon, “pops.” Yep.
  • Thomas Schippers, New York Philharmonic, Lili Chookasian, The Westminster Choir, Prokofiev – Alexander Nevsky — Composed by Sergei Prokofiev about the Russian prince and conducted by Schippers. VG+.
  • Ambrosia – One Eighty — We love our Yacht Rock. This has “Biggest Part of Me” and “You’re the Only Woman (You & I).”
  • Lester Flatt And Earl Scruggs – The Fabulous Sound Of Lester Flatt And Earl Scruggs — VG-.
  • Debussy • Richard Strauss • Fritz Reiner • Chicago Symphony – La Mer • Don Juan —VG-.
  • Nils Lofgren – I Came To Dance — A member of Springsteen’s E Street Band since 1984. His third solo album from 1977.
  • Gary Graffman ♦ Eugene Ormandy ♦ George Szell, Philadelphia Orchestra ♦ Cleveland Orchestra – Tchaikovsky – The Three Tchaikovsky Piano Concertos — I don’t think Tchaikovsky get the credit he deserves in piano-dom.
  • The Piano, Orchestra And Chorus Of Henry Mancini – A Warm Shade Of Ivory — I love Henry Mancini. VG+.
  • Rick Wakeman – White Rock — The keyboardist of Yes. The soundtrack to White Rock, a 1977 documentary film about the 1976 Winter Olympics held in Innsbruck, Austria.
  • Marian Anderson – Songs By Schubert – Schumann – Brahms – Strauss – Haydn — Chosen by The BCPF. No clue.
  • Andy Williams – The Andy Williams Christmas Album — The BCPF also loves her Christmas albums and while I usually give two hoots about Christmas stuff, I do think that his “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” (along with “Sleigh Ride” composed by Leroy Anderson and first recorded by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra) brings back the whole childhood memory thing of Christmas.
  • Tchaikovsky, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy – “Pathetique” Symphony (No. 6 In B Minor) — VG+.
  • Tchaikovsky – 1812 Overture ● Serenade For Strings — One of the most bombastic pieces of music, ever! VG+.
  • Laurindo Almeida – Guitar Music Of Spain — Spain is on the itinerary for next year’s trip to Europe for The Beer Dads+ so we had to get this, but even if it weren’t on the itinerary, we’d probably still have gotten it. VG+.
  • Moussorgsky – Ravel / Franck – Arturo Toscanini, NBC Symphony Orchestra – Pictures At An Exhibition / Psyche And Eros — VG+.
  • The ‘Big’ Sound – A Tribute To Glenn Miller — I love big band standards and this is Glenn Miller. This is big band standards. VG+.

This week, (Tuesday-Friday) the records will be left out for the same deal that went on yesterday, purchase 15 and get 15% off; purchase 33 and get 33% off; purchase 50 and get 50% off. Next Saturday, all remaining $1 record will be $.25 each or 5-for-$1, but they will close two hours early on that Saturday (at 5p). Because of this, there will be no TLD/UR special of the week. This is a great way to kickstart a record collection. Discogs has been a big help to me on this long list.

Until tomorrow, keep spinning…

Salutations™!!

So, yesterday we actually pull the smallest haul ever, for us, from Underdog Records. It’s the end of the month and funds are tight so we looked through the $1 bin and found three records that we wanted and brought them home. Each surprisingly was in VG and dare I say VG+ condition even though none of the three had inner sleeves. Here’s what we got:

Attention_Shoppers!

©Capitol Records

  • Maurice Ravel – Maurice Ravel Plays Ravel — We find that Sundays are good classical/easy listening days.
  • Starz  – Attention Shoppers! — If you’ll remember, Dear Reader, in April 2017 I reviewed this album as part of the Eugeology series from Eugene. I loved the record and now, I have it on vinyl. MMmm yeah!
  • Andy Williams – The Andy Williams Christmas Album — “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” is one of my favorite Christmas songs and Andy’s version is my favorite. It just sings nostalgic Christmas to me.

That’s it! There were plenty of good things that had just come out or was in the “freshly used” bins but we stuck with a minimalist approach. Don’t forget that Record Store Day is on April 13 and the list is long! Underdog Records will be stocking nearly the entire list (according to availability as some are limited quantities). You can see the entire list HERE. Listen to each new episode of The Less Desirables to hear the TLD/UR special of the week. And once, we get our RSD titles, we’ll throw them on Discogs and into our collection!

Until tomorrow, keep spinning!

It was a beautiful but chilly day in downtown WSNC. The BCPF and I really enjoyed being out and about. We did our normal routine stuff but added a trip to the Krankie’s Craft Fair. We saw some cool things, bought a few small items from local craftsfolk and of course, went to Underdog Records. It was about the fourth time this week I had been in there. It’s just where I go to kill time, to have a nice chat, to thumb through some rekkids, or whatever. I just love being there. Here’s what we got from there this week:

  • Radiohead – The Bends (#111 on the RS List and a really good album from the band; new)
  • AC/DC – Highway To Hell (#200 on the RS List and one that needs to be in any collector’s collection; new)
  • Night Ranger – Dawn Patrol (NM copy, both the vinyl and sleeve is unblemished)
  • Night Ranger – 7 Wishes (NM copy, same as above; someone was ditching they Night Ranger collection)
  • The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown – The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown (yeah, crazy is a good descriptor; original 1968 pressing in VG++ condition; really a good album)
  • Dire Straits – Alchemy – Dire Straits Live (2xLP VG++)
  • Elvis Costello & The Attractions – Armed Forces (#475 on the RS List; VG+)
  • Elvis Costello – This Year’s Model (#98 on the RS List; VG+)
  • Emmylou Harris – Light Of The Stable (NM Christmas album)
  • Emmylou Harris – Luxury Liner (VG+)
  • Jon Anderson – Olias Of Sunhillow (I’ve been on a Yes kick, lately; I haven’t heard this so I don’t know what to expect; VG+)
  • The Alan Parsons Project – Eye In The Sky (VG+)
  • Claude Debussy / Maurice Ravel – Chansons De Bilitis, Fêtes Galantes / Histoires Naturelles (NM)
  • Heart – Magazine (VG+)
  • Heart – Bad Animals (VG; $1 bin find)
  • Burl Ives – Twelve Days Of Christmas (VG+)
  • Michael Gore – Music And Dialogue From The Motion Picture Terms Of Endearment (VG; $1 bin find)
  • Lerner And Loewe’s – Brigadoon: An Original Cast Recording (The BCPF was in a local performance of this show when she was a youngster; VG+; $1 bin find)
  • Joan Baez – Joan (VG; $1 bin find)
  • Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass – Christmas Album (VG; $1 bin find; we listened yesterday and loved it)
  • The Dubliners – Drinkin’ & Courtin’ (VG; $1 bin find; reminded us of sitting in a pub – Scottish, English or Irish)
  • Chubby Checker – Twist With Chubby Checker ($1 bin find; G+)

We really enjoyed what we got to listen to yesterday of this haul. It’s good stuff. Jonathan has gift certificates for sale at Underdog Records. Plus, if you’ve thought about getting into collecting vinyl, but don’t have a turntable, Jonathan has several for sale in the store, new and used. Don’t forget to always listen to The Less Desirables for the week’s TLD/UDR special offer. And, to keep track of what you have, or if you’re looking to buy something you’ve been looking for or to unload stuff, use Discogs. You can use it for CD collections, too.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Before we went to Hoots Beer Company‘s anniversary/Oktoberfest release, The BCPF and I still made our routine morning happen, including walking, farmers’ market, Mary’s Gourmet Diner and, yes! Underdog Records. We got some good stuff, too. Here’s what we picked up!

MilesDavisKindofBlue

©Columbia Records

  • The War On Drugs – A Deeper Understanding (been hearing a lot of good things about this album and had to have it, I dug it, The BCPF loved it, new)
  • Miles Davis – Kind Of Blue (180g, mono, audiophile version of the greatest selling jazz album of all time, #12 on RS Top 500 of All Time, new)
  • Charles Mingus – Mingus Ah Um (I wanted something that was comparable to Wayne Shorter’s Speak No Evil because I really dug that, Jonathan recommended this, new)
  • Pink Floyd – The Final Cut (previously purchased but still sealed, so I can’t really say used, picked up by The BCPF, “new”)
  • Eurythmics – Touch (#492 on RS Top 500, VG++)
  • Johnny Cash – At Folsom Prison (#88 on RS Top 500, VG)
  • Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris – Trio
  • Gipsy Kings – Mosaïque
  • Rosemary Clooney – Come On-A My House
  • Van Halen – Diver Down
  • Ravel / d’Indy– Munch / Boston Symphony, Nicole Henriot-Schweitzer – Concerto In G / Symphony On A French Mountain Air
  • Dan Fogelberg – Nether Lands (VG+ in the $1 bin, previous owner took care of this)
  • Dan Fogelberg – Phoenix (VG+ in the $1 bin)
  • Dan Fogelberg – Captured Angel (VG in the $1 bin)
  • Orchestra And Chorus Of Henry Mancini, The – Dear Heart And Other Songs About Love (I have come to learn that I really, really, really dig me some Henry Mancini)
  • Henry Mancini, His Orchestra And Chorus – Big Screen – Little Screen (More Mancini)
  • Philip Bailey – Continuation
  • Tom Jones – Live In Las Vegas
  • Tom Jones – Tom
  • Duke Ellington – Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies (former WFDD copy, VG++ in $1 bin)
  • Laura Branigan – Self Control
  • Jefferson Airplane – The Worst Of Jefferson Airplane
  • The Monkees – More Of The Monkees

So, yeah, a good haul. We didn’t get to listen to as much as we usually do on Saturday, but we didn’t have a lot to wash because most of the used stuff was in really good shape, and Jonathan had cleaned some to gauge his pricing. While we were there, a young lady came in and asked Jonathan about getting into vinyl. I get excited about that. She was probably early- to mid-twenties. Jonathan is great for that kind of guidance. And, when you get into the collecting aspect, use Discogs to archive, and chronicle your collection.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
