Salutations™!!

I touched on The BCPF’s birthday, yesterday, and only slightly, but I wanted to talk a little more about it; about the whole weekend, really. It started on Friday when The BCPF and I went to Willows Bistro to eat, since we weren’t going to be there for our regular Saturday night standing rezzie. Chef Brent Andruzzi made us some fantastic pork dishes. Boneless pork chops and pork tenderloin prepared in the Andruzzi “culinary ninja” style. I have to go back to look at my notes to see what they were. That on top of four red wine sangrias made it a little hard to concentrate.

After that, we met with The Traveling Mixologist, Jordan Keiper from the Tavern in Old Salem and co-host with me on Sipping NC: The Art of Drinking, at Wise Man Brewing where we had a behind the scenes tour and a few beverages  while Facebook Live-ing. Great night.

The BCPF and I got up on Saturday morning and we didn’t do our Saturday “walk.” It was her birthday weekend, after all. We did however go to Mary’s Gourmet Diner to have brunch and then over to Underdog Records to buy some awesome selections on vinyl. We went home, listened to a few. We met Jordan up in Pilot Mountain, at JOLO Vineyards & Winery, tasted great wine and talked with JW Ray of JOLO and Jay Raffaldini of Raffaldini Vineyards before we came back down the hill. We had time to kill before our next plan so we went to Meridian to have a few drinks before we met with our pals, the Verners, the Joneses, and Our Jim Young and Chef Mark Grohman and staff took awesome care of us at the “chef’s table.” I had the antelope and The BCPF had “the meat ball,” which is a rather large ball of beef stuffed with ricotta cheese over a pile of housemade pasta. Several libations, there.

Next phase: we all traveled back to the Verners’ house and The BCPF, Our Jim Young and I taught the rest how to play a card game called “Sh!t Boots.” Yes, it’s called that. We played that for a few hours and drank good beer and whiskey. Apparently, we drink a lot. Of course we do. It’s us that are part of the CrewTLD/The Beer Dads families. We drink. We have fun. We were missing the Lowders from the night, but they were still in the Bahamas. Can’t blame them for missing that, eh?

Next day, after the crazy time change (I wish it stayed Daylight Saving Time all year around), we went to Willows for a celebratory brunch and again were treated with fantastic Willows stuff including pork and pork belly & collards benedict. You just can’t do wrong there, I don’t think. We went and picked up 3B and went to a few open houses before doing some grocery shopping and coming home to cook and listen to records. Good times with her and my boy. So, according to The BCPF, her birthday weekend was fun and enjoyable. I did my job. I made her happy. Happy birthday week to you, still and again, my darling!

Salutations™!!

One of my favorite events in downtown WSNC is the Salute! Wine Festival and that’s tomorrow, June 4, from noon-6pm (rain or shine), and The BCPF and I will be there!!! The biggest reason it’s my favorite isn’t the wine (that’s probably second or third or something, perhaps ninth?), but it’s the fact that I get to hover around on Fourth Street in the downtown of my hometown and the city that I love. It is my preferred festival for several reasons: There’s plenty of shade. It doesn’t smell like horse poop. It appeals to a more distinguished crowd. The buildings laid out on the street creates a natural breezeway which means it’s cooler and those buildings hold restaurants and other businesses that make the experience better.

Possibly one of the best parts of the festival is the Food & Wine University which will feature Chef Stephanie Tyson of Sweet Potatoes paired with Hanover Park Vineyards, Chef Richard Miller of Graze paired with Raylen Vineyards, my buddy and pal, Chef Travis Myers of Willow’s Bistro paired with what I was told was JOLO but the press release says Jones von Drehl Vineyards, former The Less Desirables guest, Chef Kristina Fuller of Crafted: Art of the Taco/Street Food is paired with Raffaldini and another former The Less Desirables guest, Chef Tirra Cowan from Black Mountain Chocolate paired with Lake James Cellars. It’s good stuff, every year, and I’m glad to get to see some of it.

There will be over 30 wineries/meaderies/brewers to choose from on this day. Tickets are $25 in advance (which means you better buy today!) or $30 the day of the event. I promise you won’t have a bad time here. The Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership and their fearless leader, Jason Thiel (with Mary Charlotte and Mackenzie) know how to throw a party and this is going to be awesome!!! You can buy your tix, find more info and all that jazz by visiting the Salute! website. Find me and stop me and say hello! Really. Do that.

Until tomorrow (when I’ll be wining it up), same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Yesterday, The BCPF and I accompanied PJ3 of The Beer Dads and his “Pilot” to the Swan Creek area of the NC woods to visit three wineries, Raffaldini, Piccione and Laurel Gray. We spent some time at Raffaldini, actually enjoying a tasting then grabbing some soppressata, gouda, and chevre with fig chutney to eat with Triscuit crackers. We also had some pasta salad and chicken salad. We had a nice bottle of red wine that we all shared and enjoyed, together. We purchased a couple of bottles to bring home.

At Piccione we just did a tasting, purchased a bottle and headed to Laurel Gray at the recommendation of a friend. We loved those wines and sat, after a tasting and purchasing of a few bottles, with a glass outside in the shade, under a covered porch, relaxing and taking in the day. We then went back to WSNC to grab “17” (PJ3’s boy) and went to eat at OSO Eats over off Jonestown. Good food there. I want to go back and try Oso’s when I’ve not had  a full day of drinking wine as I think I’d enjoy it more. I was tired. It was a fantastic day with my girl and great friends. Fantastic day, indeed.

Then today, it was brunch at Finnigan’s Wake and then some goodness from Pablo at Atelier on Trade. I have loved this long weekend.
