Salutations™!!

Yesterday was a pretty routine day. Well, maybe not. We got a late start. The BCPF finished her biggest project of the year, I was up way too late, yadda yadda yadda. We really only got to listen to a few records yesterday but we bought a few at Underdog Records. Here’s the haul:

Pink Floyd – A Dark Side Of The Moon — This is a European import of a live concert recorded at London Wembley Empire Pool on November 16, 1974. I’m assuming that it is VG+. I bought it “new” but a lot of these imports come unsealed, so I don’t know what the rating/grading is and if they are new or not. This is the gray sleeved version.

Bad Brains – Live ’79 Soundboard — I know nothing about Bad Brains, just that I’ve heard the name for years. This is another import and unofficial release, this one from Finland. I’ve seen a review or two that says it’s not worth money because while it is a “soundboard” recording it’s dubbed from some old wonky cassette or something. We’ll see. VG+?

John Prine – Sweet Revenge — I’ve only heard John Prine like three times outside of his comedy-ish song, “Let’s Talk Dirty in Hawaiian.” One was when I did the RS list and another a few months back when he passed away. I don’t necessarily care for him. I feel we already had a Bob Dylan, we didn’t need a cheap knock-off. I realize that he’s much more than that, now. But, while I have to say I enjoyed a good bit of this album, it’s still mostly “meh” for me. New.

Alexander Courage – Star Trek, From The Original Pilots: The Cage & Where No Man Has Gone Before (Original Television Soundtrack) — “The Cage” was the original pilot of STOS and instead of Captain Kirk, “Bones” and the like, it had “Number One” and Captain Christopher Pike. NBC thought it had out kicked the coverage of its viewing audience and refused it, ordering instead a second pilot. This is where “Where No Man Has Gone Before” comes in. It was the first episode America saw, with Kirk and Bones. “The Cage” was mostly recycled into one of the most famous STOS episodes, “The Menagerie.” This comes in one of three colors: Red Shirt Red, Science Officer Blue or Command Gold. But, you don’t know which color you get until you open it. This is sealed. Hold on, I’ll open it… Science Officer Blue!!

Beck – Kaos Radio Session – Olympia, WA. January 13, 1994 — So, another import/bootleg/unofficial release from Europe. The cover says January 26, 1994, but the back says January 13, 1994. Also, the Discogs entry has a red cover with yellow border, but mine is blue with a pink border. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a crappy copy but The BCPF is a huge Beck fan, so… VG+?

Pretenders – Live At The Palladium New York City, 1980: FM Broadcast — This is a limited edition unofficial release from Europe. It’s sealed, is on a true label and has a barcode. I hope it is of decent sonic quality. New.

Nirvana – Damage, Mon Amour — An Italian unofficial release. A Collection of live and radio recordings from 1989 through 1994. On blue viny VG+?

Nirvana – At The End Of Lonely Street — Another Italian unofficial release. A collection of bedroom, garage and studio demos from 1989 through 1992. VG+?

Bob Marley – The Best Of Bob Marley — German import. This is a rerecording of Bob Marley songs by Marley, not your typical compilation. As one reviewer said on Discogs: A great copy in term of musical quality. Not a lot of the greatest hits but some interesting takes on some well-known songs. Refreshing. VG+?

Gloria Estefan And Miami Sound Machine – Let It Loose — Yeah, I know. It was sealed and an original pressing from 1987. I’m a sucker for the Top 40 bubblegum of the time. I couldn’t resist. NM.

Jonathan was gearing up for RSD Drop 2 that happens next Saturday. You have until midnight tonight to register for the lottery for this weekend. Same deal as before except another half hour added, so that means six more people get to have a turn in-store. It starts at 8a and three people (and a possible +1) get 15 minutes to shop the store, including the RSD booty. When the 15 minutes are up, they have to check out and leave. 815a folks get to come in and the process repeats. Last month he cut it off at 11a. This month it goes until 1130a. He promptly closes the store and then takes inventory. Then, at 1p the website goes live with leftover stock from RSD. Remember, in the past, this hasn’t been allowed by the official RSD brass. This year, the are allowing it. Visit the Underdog Records website to register for your chance to be one of the lucky 42. Then come home and use Discogs to keep track of your loot.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
Scorp out!

Salutations™!!

Yesterday was a national holiday for record collectors, although it didn’t feel like it. In recent years, I would have camped out overnight in front of Underdog Records in anticipation of Record Store Day. And, it would have been mid- to late-April. But, all that went out the window with C-19. RSD was postponed and then they decided to do it in three drops. One each in August, September, and October. Jonathan did the right thing and set it up in a lottery system where interested parties registered to enter. There were over 100 entries, maybe close to 200. Only 36 slots were available: 3 people every 15 minutes from 8am (the normal start time for RSD) and 11am. Underdog then closed and Jonathan took an inventory of the leftovers and, also for the first time, he was able to sell RSD titles online the day of.rsd drops

I was lucky enough to draw one of the spots. I was a 1015am slot. No overnight camping was allowed, which I don’t mind missing at all, I just missed hanging with my friends. And, no mad scramble for records, although with our crew (or Crüe as we call it), it was fun to do that together. All of these are new and I include (where applicable) the limited issue. So, with that in mind, here’s the haul:

  • Iggy Pop – Kiss My Blood (Live At The Olympia – Paris France – 1991 — Record Store Day 2020 exclusive release, limited to 2,500 copies. Includes printed inner sleeves, a tour poster, and a DVD of the live concert. 3xLP Gray/Red/Gray. New.
  • Ace Frehley – Trouble Walkin’ — Record Store Day 2020 first release, limited to 2,400. 2XLP, 45 RPM, Yellow/Orange splatter. First time on vinyl since 1989. I only owned it on CD, much later.
  • The Cure – Bloodflowers — Record Store Day 2020 exclusive release, limited to 7,500 copies. 2xLP, Limited Edition, Picture Disc, Reissue. I don’t usually do picture discs because a) they sound atrocious and b) they tear the poop out of my needle. But, this album isn’t available on vinyl right now unless you find an old copy.
  • Judas Priest – British Steel — Record Store Day 2020 exclusive release, limited to 3,500. 2xLP, Single Sided, Album, Limited Edition, Reissue. Side A is on Record 1, and Side B is on Side A of Record 2. Sides B & D are printed on creating the illusion of a picture disc. Tracklisting on the packaging differs from what is listed on RSD’s website. I’m not sure how this works, I haven’t opened the albums. I got this mainly for the collectability of it.
  • Throwing Muses – Purgatory Paradise — Record Store Day 2020 first release, limited to 950 copies. 2xLP, Reissue. I don’t know that this album (released in 2013) was released on vinyl originally. I think that’s what the first release means. This was a pick from The BCPF.
  • k.d. lang – Drag — Record Store Day Aug 2020 edition. Smoky grey vinyl. 2xLP, 3 sides recorded, side 4 etched “drag.” Special Edition. k.d. lang (I love the lowercase styling) has an amazing voice.
  • Fight – A Small Deadly Space — Record Store Day 29 Aug 2020 exclusive. First-ever vinyl reissue. Limited Edition, Red & Black Marble. For those who don’t know, Fight was the band that Rob Halford started after he left Judas Priest in 1992. This is their second album.
  • Martin Denny – Exotic Moog —  Limited Edition, Reissue, Orange. Record Store Day 2020 exclusive, limited to 1,500 copies. Originally released in 1969.
  • Tones On Tail – Pop — Limited Edition, Reissue. RSD 2020 Release. Limited to 1500 copies. We didn’t get this from Underdog Records. I had talked to someone from the Crüe that I knew had an earlier time slot and I knew that this was on his list. Another part of RSD is you’re only allowed to buy one of each title. I also didn’t know how many copies Jonathan got in, so another member of the Crüe had to go to another store (he didn’t get drawn) and was first in line (that store did allow people to gather) and picked it up for me. This was The BCPF’s “must-have” from the list.
  • Al Green – Green Is Blues — Limited Edition, Reissue, Remastered, Green/Blue Split, 180g. First released for Record Store Day 2020 with an initial pressing of 3,000 copies, of which 500 were sold in the UK. Housed in a tip-on jacket. This means the pictures are glued onto the card stock.
  • The Pale Fountains – Longshot For Your Love — Compilation, Limited Edition, Reissue. RSD 2020 release reissue limited to 900 Copies. Black vinyl disc issued in a gatefold sleeve. With inner sleeve featuring liner notes & lots of photographs. This was confusing. Musically it is amazing. Vocally it was awful. The music wins.
  • Roxy Music – Roxy Music — Reissue, Clear, 180 Gram, Gatefold. Record Store Day 2020 exclusive release, limited to 4,000, gatefold cover. This release is listed as “Roxy Music – The Steven Wilson Stereo Mix“ on RSD’s website, but that title does not appear on the front cover or spine. So, I don’t know if it really is the Steven Wilson stereo mix or not. Some copies with “Made in the Czech Republic” sticker on the back. Mine had that. The debut album from the band in 1972.
  • Gorillaz – G Sides — Compilation, Limited Edition, Reissue, Remastered, 180g. Limited to 15,000 worldwide copies according to Record Store Day. Printed inner sleeve. I don’t have any Gorillaz and I don’t know a single tune by them. I figured now is a good time to listen to some of it.
  • Pretenders – Live! At The Paradise Theater, Boston, 1980 — Limited Edition, Reissue, Clear / Red. RSD Drop, August 29, 2020 release. Limited edition of 6500 copies. It’s in a vinyl plastic sleeve that smells like pool floats and beach balls. I dug it. The record is awesome, too.
  • k.d. lang and the reclines – Angel With A Lariat — Limited Edition, Translucent Red, Reissue. Reissue of her 1987 sophomore effort.
  • Tom Tom Club – Genius of Live 2020 — Compilation. Record Store Day 2020. Exclusive limited to only 1200 pressed on yellow vinyl.
  • Dio – Annica — 12″. Picture Disc. Officially released on August 29th, 2020 for Record Store Day. The sticker still lists the date for RSD as April 18, 2020, which was postponed. Limited to 3000 copies. Again, this is more for the collectibility of it than to listen to. I’m not a fan of 12″ single nor picture discs (as I stated).
  • The Charlatans UK – The Charlatans V. The Chemical Brothers — 12″,  Limited Edition, Reissue, Yellow. Record Store Day 2020. Limited to 500 copies. The Chemical Brothers remixed this 12″.
  • Def Leppard – Rock N Roll Hall of Fame — Limited Edition, Special Edition. Released for the first Record Store Day “Drops” 2020. Limited to 4000 copies. Includes a hype sticker. Recorded last year in the Barclay Center during their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
  • Ultravox – Sleepwalk — 12″, 45 RPM, Single, Limited Edition, Clear. Record Store Day 2020 edition: first time on UK 12″. Cover sticker states Ultravox. 40th Anniversary. 12″ Clear Vinyl Exclusive Sleepwalk. Limited Edition Record Store Day. Rear Cover states: Taken from the 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of VIENNA. Note: only one pressing of this has been manufactured for worldwide distribution and there are no separate releases for any specific country. 1,200 copies only.
  • New Riders Of The Purple Sage – Field Trip — Limited Edition, Black. Recorded live at Temple Meadow – Veneta, Oregon August 27, 1972. Taken directly from the original 16-track analog master reel-to-reel tapes running at 15 I.P.S. Previously released as “Veneta, Oregon August 27, 1972” (KUFALA Recordings- KUF 0088) in 2004. Record Store Day Release limited to 1500 copies. I know this is probably a blasphemous statement, but I have never heard of NRPS other than some passing something here and there. I don’t know that if I ever had heard it or anything from them, I wouldn’t know it was them. So, why not check it out?
  • Various – Girls In The Garage Volume 8 — Compilation, Limited Edition, Numbered, Special Edition. Some of the artists on this are Claire Lane, The Beas, The Liverbirds, Marilyn Mattson, Shammy And The Famous Ruis Family, Die Sweetles, What Four and Judy Came, just to name a few.

The next two were not part of the RSD releases but we picked them up while we were in the store:

  • Fantastic Negrito – Have You Lost Your Mind Yet? — My Kousin Gary turned me on to this during the recording of Asylum: The Tales from the Devereaux Diaries podcast last week. It’s hard to put him in a genre but you can include, blues, R&B, and some roots stuff. It’s a great listen and The BCPF loved it as well. New.
  • Rolling Blackouts C.F. – Hope Downs — The BCPF really liked the first album we got from Rolling Blackouts C.F. (which was their second album) so she wanted this one (their first), too. New.

I know this was all long and I won’t go into any long-winded diatribe things. Checkout Underdog Records’ website, listen to Asylum: Tales from the Devereaux Diaries podcast (and The Less Desirables and The Man Who Ate the Town and… well, the whole TLD Network) and use Discogs for cataloging and collecting!

Until tomorrow, whew! Keep spininn’!

Salutations™!!

Yep, I am a day behind on this because yesterday was Mother’s Day.

So, Underdog Records is still “closed” and Jonathan says that while he does see reopening in the near future, it will still be several weeks, and procedures within the store will be different. He’s doing a shload of deliveries right now, though. Head over to the Underdog Records website, or follow on Instagram (Jonathan’s preferred method) and Facebook to see what you can purchase.

And, per usual, this week’s streaming listens comes from Discogs’ shuffle feature and it has to be an album that I own on vinyl (outside of peripheral things like Beeswax Vinyl & More listens), that way it’s like listening to my vinyl but with headphones from my computer whilst The BCPF works 10 feet away. Here’s the list:

collageA51020

©record companies/not me

  • The Cars – Heartbeat City
  • Prince And The Revolution – Parade
  • Bruce Springsteen – The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle
  • Love – Forever Changes
  • George Harrison – Cloud Nine
  • Timbuk 3 – Greetings From Timbuk 3
  • Chicago – Chicago 16
  • The Honeydrippers – Volume One
  • Rush – Permanent Waves
  • Simply Red – Picture Book
  • Iron Maiden – Piece Of Mind
  • Laura Branigan – Self Control
  • Traffic – The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys

    CollageB51020

    ©record companies/not me

That’s a pretty good “listen” list, I think. Not my favorite Prince album and I’m not a huge Springsteen fan, but overall, it was enjoyable.

Then there were the ones that The BCPF and I listened to on Saturday on vinyl:

  • Kraftwerk – Trans Europe Express
  • The Pretenders – Learning To Crawl
  • Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers – Hard Promises
  • Fleetwood Mac – The Alternate Fleetwood Mac
  • Sufjan Stevens – Greetings From Michigan The Great Lake State
  • Jackson Browne – Running On Empty
  • Dire Straits – Love Over Gold

CollageC51020

©record companies/not me

That was a really good listening session, other than I need to find a better copy of Running on Empty because that was clearly a $1 bin find and is in really bad shape. Almost unlistenable at times. So, it’s on my hunt list, I guess.

I cannot wait to flip through the used records again. I want to buy a lot of them! I have an impressive collection now but that’s not enough. I want more! Part of the experience is the ability to collect. We’ll work on it. Patience, old man… patience.

Again, check out Underdog Records’ social and web stuffs. Buy records. Use Discogs to keep track of your collection and use it’s groovy (see what I did there) shuffle feature.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Salutations™!!

The BCPF and I did a quick jaunt to breakfast and Underdog Records yesterday and came home and my pops came over and helped me replace (read: he installed) a light fixture and put up a new one. It was a lot longer process than it should have been, I’m sure, but hey, we did what we needed to and voila! The lights are up. We didn’t really get to listen to much vinyl yesterday because I wanted to play stuff that my dad would be interested in since he was doing us a solid. There was a lot of George Jones playing from Alexa. Here’s the haul:

Nine_Inch_Nails_-_With_Teeth.png

©Interscope/Nothing

  • Nine Inch Nails – With Teeth — My pal Daniel Butner has loaned me his collection of NIN albums to listen to and get acquainted with. The journey has been interesting. I have never really been into Industrial Rock. Yeah, I have dabbled in some Marilyn Manson and even some NIN but never really paid attention to it. I have a couple of NIN either on vinyl or CD. This is a brand new, 2xLP, remastered, reissue for the 15th anniversary. I sent Daniel a pic and he was excited! New.
  • The Replacements – Don’t Tell A Soul — The 1989 follow up to Pleased to Meet Me. I really enjoyed the previous three records, so let’s hope this is as kick-butt as those. New.
  • The Love Language – Libraries — This is something The BCPF pulled. I do know they are an indie rock band from Raleigh and that this was NM.
  • Modest Mouse – Strangers To Ourselves — I have heard of MM but don’t really know anything about them. The BCPF is a fan and after looking them up, I see that they are strongly influenced by Pavement, Pixies, XTC, and Talking Heads, all bands that she/I like, so it should be interesting. This is “like new” per Jonathan, so let’s say, NM.
  • The Strokes – Angles — Don’t know a lot about The Strokes but a lot of my friends like them. The BCPF picked it up, I’ll post when we listen. VG+.
  • Prefab Sprout – From Langley Park To Memphis — Both The BCPF and I are fans of Belle & Sebastian and upon reading about their influences, this was on their list, so we will probably dig it. The album had guest appearances from Stevie Wonder and Pete Townshend and used multiple producers including Thomas Dolby, who could not commit to working on the entire album. VG+.
  • The Rainmakers – The Rainmakers — I’ve never heard of The Rainmakers but this album was from the mid-80s and looks like something I’d listen to. So, I will. VG++.
  • Sergio Mendes – The Beat Of Brazil — An acclaimed bossa nova/jazz musician from Brazil, Sergio Mendes is a world treasure, so I’ve read. He’s collaborated with many contemporary artists as well as done a lot on his own. This is from 1967 and will feature a lot of bossa nova. VG+.
  • Procol Harum – Exotic Birds And Fruit — Jonathan loves Procol Harum and I have found I enjoy it, so I bought this. Incidentally, the name means nothing. A famous record producer had a cat named Procul Haran (Procul being the breeder’s prefix). So their manager named them Procol Harum (bastardizing both that and harem, kind of like Motley Crue or Def Leppard). VG.
  • Pretenders – Extended Play — This came out between the first Pretenders album and second. A couple of song are outtakes from the first and a couple of them ended up on the second album. It was an addition to the collection. Bam! VG.
  • Bing Crosby – Zing A Little Zong — The only album we listened to yesterday when my dad was here. I love Bing Crosby and his ilk. I just enjoy the standards/crooners style vocal jazz. I just dig it. It’s a good album. VG+.

So, not a bad haul. The new year has waded us through the holiday wasteland of no new releases and things are coming out, be them reissues or brand new albums. I dig it a lot. Listen to each new episode of The Less Desirables to hear the TLD/UR special of the week. I use Discogs to bring you all this lovely list, you should use it to track your music collection regardless of the medium.

Until tomorrow, keep spinning…

Salutations™!!

The BCPF and I were back to Underdog Records yesterday after our trip to Beantown last week. It was good to be back and not only did we get a good haul this week, we actually got about six hours of record listening as well! Other than going through some head cold or sinus thing, yesterday was a wonderful day. I love my girl and spending the day with her. Here’s the haul:

b4d756e0ecf7475bc7f853206632f4f7

©Warner Bros.

  • The Psychedelic Furs – Talk Talk Talk — When I was younger, say when this stuff was new, I always got PFurs mixed up with The Fixx and Naked Eyes. They were close enough to the first wave stuff that it was only on my radar when they had a mega hit. I just didn’t have access to it. I have (obviously) come to know the difference and this was a great record. VG++.
  • Dire Straits – Love Over Gold — I have, on several occasions, mentioned my newfound love of Dire Straits. I am now only one album from having all of their studio albums on vinyl. I’m not sure it was even released on vinyl or not. If not, since they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, perhaps they’ll get a reissue of it? And, if they could figure out a way to get side one of Brothers in Arms back to its full-length self, that would be great. This was a great record. VG+.
  • Aerosmith – Aerosmith — No, I still don’t like Aerosmith, but there are some songs that I like and this was their debut album. This is the second pressing reissue from 1976 where “Walkin’ the Dog” is spelled correctly and they only used the photo of the band instead of the full sky pic. VG+.
  • Joan Jett & The Blackhearts – I Love Rock ‘N Roll — I know the song is way played out by now, but when this came out, I always felt it was a matter of “oh you have that!?” with covetous intent. I never had it, though. As a kid, for some things, albums and such, ordinary releases felt like the Holy Grail and I either felt special for having something or jealous someone else did. Music is just that big a deal to me. Anywhat! This was there and The BCPF couldn’t resist getting it. VG.
  • Pretenders – Pretenders — This completes our 79-89 Pretenders full-length album collection. They have stuff later but this was their heyday, so this is what we want. It has some great tunes including “Precious” and “Brass in Pocket.” VG++.
  • Squeeze  – Singles – 45’s And Under
  • Squeeze – Argybargy — We got two Squeeze albums yesterday and we’ve only gotten to listen to the “Singles” one so far. But, I had forgotten how many awesome songs this band had. Both of them were VG++.
  • The Cars – Candy-O — Just like Dire Straits, I have come to realize that I just downright love The Cars. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. This album, their second, has a lot of great stuff including “Let’s Go,” “It’s All I Can Do,” and “Dangerous Type.” VG++.
  • Robert Plant – Now And Zen — If I’m not mistaken, it’s the second time I’ve bought this album but the first time owning it. I believe this is the one that I purchased and immediately gave to my pal and bandmate, Clay Howard. I may be wrong, sure, but I believe that’s what happened. It has “Ship of Fools,” “Tall Cool One” and “Heaven Knows” and has a really cool feel and groove about the whole album. I dig it. VG++.
  • The Guess Who – The Best Of The Guess Who — I had this album on CD and didn’t realize how much I missed by just going after the “sexy” Rock 92 staples. Songs like “Laughing” and “Undun” are really good. I do wish (as annoying as it is) that they would have included the album version of “American Woman” but the meat of the song is here. Great listen. VG+.
  • Aldo Nova – Aldo Nova — I have passed over this about 20 times. It was a good price and I finally pulled the trigger on it. VG++.
  • Jackson Browne – World In Motion — VG++.
  • Jackson Browne – Lives In The Balance — I say I am a “fan” of Jackson Browne. However, I am usually more hit-or-miss with his stuff than I am full-on excited. These are two 80s albums. We will see if they’re hits or misses with me. VG+.
  • Billy Squier – Don’t Say No — This album was two before the one with “Rock Me Tonite” on it so he was still rockin’ and rollin’ at this point. Really, I don’t know why people flipped out over that video other than it was just awful. People are dumb. But, this has the hits “In the Dark,” “The Stroke,” “My Kind of Lover” and “Lonely is the Night.” But, there are so many other good songs on the album as well. You should get it or stream it or something if you’ve not heard it. VG++.
  • Isaac Stern, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy, Tchaikovsky/ Mendelssohn– Violin Concerto In D Major / Violin Concerto In E Minor — $1 bin find, but as per usual with classical records that we find in the $1 bin (or elsewhere), the classical music folks pretty much take care of their records. It was in really good shape, both the media and the cover. I rated it VG+ but could have gone VG++ if not for a little bit of “spotting” on the vinyl, even after my cleaning of it.
  • Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass – Christmas Album — The BCPF loves her Christmas albums, we both dig Herb Alpert and it was a $1 bin find. Why not jump on it!? Even for a $1 bin find it was in VG shape.

There you go, Dear Reader. Not only did we get awesome albums in this haul, many of them were VG++ and all of them were priced nicely. That’s what we missed being in Boston. We loved Boston but we missed our Saturday routine at Underdog Records. Deals like this week’s haul are what Underdog Records is all about. Plus, Jonathan is very helpful with finding the right equipment, old titles, he knows his inventory and is just the sweetest guy. Just yesterday a couple came in looking for cleaning supplies to be able to listen to some old records they had in storage. He helped them pick out the right stuff for what they needed and even gave away his “secret formula” recipe for the solution that I and several of the Underdog Records community use for cleaning records. He could have upsold some other stuff but he didn’t. He cares about your records. Watch the Instagram and Facebook feeds for the newest finds Jonathan has come across at Underdog Records. Also, listen to The Less Desirables every Wednesday night/Thursday morning (or anytime really) to hear the weekly TLD-exclusive deal.

Also, I stood in Underdog Records yesterday with my phone in my hand and every time I came across the titles above, I first checked on Discogs to make sure I didn’t already have it. Discogs is a great resource for all record, CD and even cassette collectors. The Marketplace is pretty awesome, too.

Until tomorrow, keep spinning…

Salutations™!!

Yesterday was misty and cold.  A near perfect day if you ask me. Why? Because I was with my best girl and I had records. I love records. And, The BCPF and I love us some Underdog Records. We got to see several of our friends whilst there and that’s always a plus. So, here’s the haul:

  • Belle & Sebastian – How To Solve Our Human Problems – Belle & Sabastian’s 3xEP that was released one every month has come out in a box set. We traded in the old and got the box. Call us crazy. New.
  • Queen – Queen – The debut album from one of the most prolific bands in rock history. I’ll be doing the choir part in the opening track from this when the Ramkat opens next month, along with quite a few other songs. This was mostly overlooked for, as someone said yesterday, its lack of “hits.” I agree. It’s not what we’d come to know and love from Queen but it certainly had some glimpses of it. Someone named Dave Doolittle wrote his name on the front cover and that irks me, but the record is in really, really great shape. VG+.
  • U2 – The Unforgettable Fire – The BCPF’s first U2 album when she was but a youngster. We saw it come across the Instagram feed whilst eating breakfast. We got in the door and I went straight for it, to secure it for our collection. VG+
  • Love And Rockets – Earth • Sun • Moon – The BCPF also loves Love and Rockets and she even yelled at me (whilst I was in the bathroom, mind you), I LOVE THIS RECORD! I was in Underdog on Friday when he bought this. VG+.
  • Joni Mitchell – Ladies Of The Canyon – A VG+ copy of a classic. It has “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Woodstock” and “The Circle Game” on it. Great album.
  • Willie Nelson – Stardust – The lone RS list pickup for this week. It was there waiting for me to grab. VG+. Oh, and it’s #260 on the list. Right in the middle.
  • Pretenders – Pretenders II – The BCPF loves the Pretenders, too. So, this was there, we had to have it. It is VG+.
  • Dire Straits – Dire Straits – The debut album but now-Hall-of-Famers, Dire Straits. I’ve really loved listening to them lately. This is a VG+ version.
  • Various – Cocktail Piano Time, Music In An Intimate Mood – I love cocktail piano music. I couldn’t pass up this 5xLP box set. All of it in VG+ condition, too.
  • Ferrante & Teicher – Holiday For Pianos – I really don’t know what this is, but it was in the $1 bin. I went to wash it and it was in NM condition. Even the cover was immaculate. So, we have it.
  • Barbra Streisand, Sydney Chaplin – Funny Girl (Original Broadway Cast) – VG $1 bin find. I have “Funny Lady,” why not have both?
  • Siobhan McKenna – Irish Ballads Folk Songs And Lyrics Read By Siobhan McKenna – Again, no clue, we love international music and with a name like Siobhan McKenna, it’s gotta be good! A “G” $1 bin find.
  • Cliff Richard – Every Face Tells A Story – UK’s 60s/70s heartthrob, and it was a VG $1 bin find.
  • Randy Meisner – One More Song – The former bass player for The Eagles, he had some pretty big songs with them. This is a VG+ $1 bin find.
  • Neil Diamond – Serenade – I’m always amazed when I find Neil Diamond albums that I’ve never heard of, or have. I haven’t really taken the time to look at his discography, but it must be vast. $1 bin find.
  • Various – FM (The Original Movie Soundtrack) – I loved the film and the soundtrack is just chock full of great tunes. A VG $1 bin find.
  • The Alan Parsons Project – I Robot – Because I have a new-found obsession with the Alan Parsons Project, I had to grab this when The BCPF came across it. And it was only $1. Best I can tell is that it is at least VG.
  • Daryl Hall & John Oates – Voices –  A very good album, this. It has some hits on it and some throw-aways. It was enjoyable and it was only $1 and in VG+ condition. Why do almost all H&O albums have the slits in the top of the album jackets and not on the side? Weird.
  • Kingston Trio – The Kingston Trio No. 16 – As with Neil Diamond for me, The BCPF is on a constant search for a Kingston Trio album we don’t already have. Well, this $1 bin find was one of those. Best I can tell, it was VG.

There’s this week’s haul. We enjoyed listening to what we got to hear yesterday (not all of these, for sure). Again, we’ve become like a family there at Underdog Records. When we see each other, we smile and talk and catch up and it’s like we’re all part of a clan or something. I really love it. I’m there several times a week, usually, and someone’s always coming through. It’s so much fun to collect and listen. It’s so much better when you’re part of that community. We’re welcoming, too. Come in and see us!

As you can tell, I use Discogs to document my collection and I have another K-Tel record coming this week that I purchased from the Discogs Marketplace. Check it out. I can watch my friends’ collection, as well. Again, it’s just fun.

Until tomorrow, happy spinning…

Salutations™!!

A lazy, snowy day in WSNC yesterday. It was great, though. It was cold enough to snow and the ground warm enough to not allow it to stick to the roads. They were navigatable and it was beautiful. The flakes were big and fluffy. The BCPF and I loved it. It was cool to stand in Underdog Records, talking records, life, music in general, everything. It was just cool. So, we walked out with this:

Phil_Collins_-_Face_Value

  • Belle And Sebastian – The Life Pursuit (The BCPF’s and my favorite B&S album; have looked for it for a while and Jonathan was able to finally get it off backorder; new)
  • She & Him – A Very She & Him Christmas (mmmm Zooey Deschanel; The BCPF has wanted this for a long time on vinyl and there it was!; new)
  • Dusty Springfield – You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me (VG+ copy)
  • David Bowie – Stage (2xLP live album from 1978; VG+)
  • The Grateful Dead – Steal Your Face (Okay Danielle, I’m going to try this; 2xLP VG+)
  • The Grateful Dead – The Best Of The Grateful Dead: Skeletons From The Closet (same here; VG+)
  • Traffic – Traffic (VG+)
  • W.A.S.P. – The Headless Children (VG+)
  • Various – The Stash Christmas Album (VG++)
  • Bob Marley & The Wailers Featuring Peter Tosh – The Birth Of A Legend (VG+)
  • Pretenders – The Singles (VG+)
  • Phil Collins – Face Value (have always loved PC and this album is amazing from beginning to end, VG++)
  • The Fixx – Reach The Beach (as I asked on my post about this album, why weren’t they bigger than they were? This band is amazing! VG++)
  • Tracey Ullman – You Broke My Heart In 17 Places (VG+)
  • Heart – Heart (spend a lot of time playing “bed drums” (pillows arranged to emulate a drum kit) with this album; VG+)
  • Pat Benatar – Seven The Hard Way (VG+)
  • Pat Benatar – Tropico (VG+)
  • Rolling Stones – Made In The Shade (VG+)
  • The Rolling Stones – Emotional Rescue (VG)
  • Sting – The Dream Of The Blue Turtles ($1 bin find but this joker is in VG+ condition)
  • Madonna – Like A Virgin ($1 bin find, but in great shape; VG+)
  • Firefall – Élan ($1 bin find; VG+)
  • The Living Presence Orchestra – Neapolitan Nights ($1 bin find; VG+)
  • Rimsky-Korsakov / The Philadelphia Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy – Scheherazade, Op. 35 ($1 bin find; VG)
  • Beethoven, Daniel Barenboim – Beethoven Sonatas: Pathetique – Les Adieux – Moonlight ($1 bin find; VG+)
  • Barbra Streisand – The Way We Were ($1 bin find; VG is the rating but it sounded great, probably closer to VG+)
  • Various – Season’s Greetings From Barbra Streisand…And Friends ($1 bin find; VG)
  • Saint-Saëns / Britten – Leonard Bernstein, New York Philharmonic – The Carnival Of The Animals / The Young Person’s Guide To The Orchestra (hopefully a better version of the “Carnival of the Animals” that I love so much; $1 bin find; VG+)
  • Leontyne Price, Richard Tucker, Rosalind Elias, Philip Maero, Erich Leinsdorf – Highlights From Madama Butterfly ($1 bin find; VG+)
  • Jethro Tull – M.U. – The Best Of Jethro Tull ($1 bin find; VG)
  • Foreigner – Head Games (this is pretty rough looking and I’m going to give it a listen through, Jonathan didn’t charge me for it as it’s in such a sad state and I may remove it if it’s not listenable; G)

So, there you have this week’s haul. Not a bad one, I don’t think. We have sure enjoyed listening to the five or six we got through yesterday (and into today). Right now you can get an additional 10% on a gift certificate (also a 45RPM record with a sticker, très chic!) to give to that record lover that you just don’t know what they have already (and don’t look at Discogs to find out). Jonathan has a few turntables, both new and used, in the store right now! Go check them out. And, if you haven’t noticed, I like Discogs, a lot!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

“Sukie was the kid, she liked to hang out in the graveyard. She did brass rubbings, she learned you never had to press hard. When she finished hanging out she was all alone. She decided that she better check in at home. There was an awful row between her mum and dad. They said she hadn’t done this, she hadn’t done that. If she wanted to remain inside the family home she’d have to tow the line, she’d have to give it a go. It didn’t suit Sukie, so she took her things and left.” – “Sukie in the Graveyard” (Kildea/Geddes/Cooke/Colburn/Martin/Jackson/Murdoch
