Salutations™!!

Today is the 31st anniversary of The Cult’s Sonic Temple album. And, it’s not every day that I get to play a video that I was in. But, this was my pals Clay, Chad, Lee and Neal doing a whole Cult set in Greensboro a couple of years back. Enjoy!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

If you find yourself out tonight or are just looking for something to do, then consider heading over to 6th & Vine around 10pm (or come earlier and have dinner). That’s where the Threadbare Trio will be delivering good songs done halfway decent and a slew of tasteless and ridiculous jokes and cutting up. I can’t even promise that, but we’ll have something that resembles it. 12933006_694975917320029_8559165572406661538_n

Clay, Neal and I are ready to, well, I don’t know that I’d call it “rocking out.”  Let’s go with play some music for you. A little classic rock, a little R & B, a little whatever. You’ll laugh, you’ll have fun. And, have a sangria whilst you’re there. They’re pretty good at 6th & Vine.

Okay, see you then!

Salutations™!!

Yesterday, my pals Neal Goode and Clay Howard and I performed for the first SSO4 of 2018. We opened the season doing a little “comedacoustic” music. I just made that up. Anywhat! I wanted to show a picture or six. I thought they looked cool. Thanks to Mackenzie Cates-Allen and Hayley Cates for the pics, by the way.

Salutations™!!

I meant to write this earlier today but time wasn’t on my side.

I mentioned in my post yesterday that I had yet another doctor’s appointment. It was with a dermatologist. Her name was Dr. Liu. My general practitioner referred me to her when I asked him about something on my back. no-c

About four months ago, I had a place that was a bit itchy on my back. It was one of those places that was under the skin but continued to itch no matter how much I scratched. I made it worse because I continued to scratch. At one point, it welted up and I kept on it. I rubbed it raw and it scabbed up. It became slightly discolored. It continued to itch.

So, I asked my doc about it and he said it could be eczema or it could be a basal cell (which could be cancerous). I don’t care who you are and no matter how minor it may be, you hear the “‘C’ Word” and that will mess with your mind. I’ll admit that I was feeling a bit sorry for myself and worried even though I told myself I wasn’t going to. It’s hard not to.

I had my appointment around 2:20p today and The BCPF went with me. She took about 45 seconds to look at it and then asked me to stand up (I was having a full-body exam). She said, “my goodness those are huge calves!” If you don’t know me, I have always had huge calves, even when I was a skinny kid. It was funny. We all laughed. After that, she told me that it was most likely a pinched nerve at one time and then I made it irritated and then it turned into, as she said, “a discolored itchy spot.” Not cancer. That was amazing to hear. A wash of relief came over me. That was great news. The BCPF and I high-fived each other. I didn’t want to say anything until I knew what the dealio was.

Again, I meant to talk about that earlier today but I didn’t sleep too well last night with the new CPAP. So, I napped a bit today. Tonight, I played some Cult songs with my pals Clay, Chad, Neal, and Lee. It was fun. We did pretty well. I’m tired. I’m going to bed.

Nite.

I totally wanted to say that I had fun playing with the Threadbare Trio + 1 yesterday at Muddy Creek Cafe/Music Hall. We played with Chad Huskey as our “+1” and he was awesome, as always. Sam Foster and Seth Williams’ band, Whiskey Foxtrot started the show off with us and they even performed two songs with us, one to start the show (“Midnight Rider”) and one to finish with us (“Breakdown”).

I met two folks that I’ve been friends with on Facebook for a while now but had never met. So Steve Worley and Terry VunCannon, it was cool to meet you both.

I also saw 3B’s Second Grade teacher, who is a friend of mine. I haven’t talked to her in a few years but it was cool to say hey for a bit. She and the BCPF talked a good bit.

All in all, it was fun. So, thanks to Shana and Bill for having us and thanks to my Threadbare Trio brothers, Clay Howard and Neal Goode for playing with me and thanks to Whiskey Foxtrot for doing the show with us.

Bob Dylan, Clay Howard, Music, Neal Goode, The Traveling Wilburys, Threadbare Trio, Tom Petty, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Salutations™!!

I have known my entire life that I’m a late bloomer when it comes to music. Some of my now-favorite stuff is music that I shunned as a kid and some into adulthood. I don’t know if it’s just stubbornness or if there is some kind of mental illness I have or if I’m just a plain-ol’-dumbarse. I think it’s a combination of all of that, really. But, this week, and really the last few months, have shown me how ignorant I am about that area I talk about being such a fan of, music.

Again, a lot of it I will contribute to non-access, especially the hard rock stuff because it just wasn’t accessible to me. I had no way of knowing. But, some stuff… I was right in the path of and skirted around it. Tom Petty was one of those. I am so ashamed at my comments about him when I was younger. You see, I used to say that Tom Petty was proof that you didn’t have to have talent to make it. Now, before you go off and virtually slap the ever-loving bejeezus out of me, don’t worry, I have done it to my own self and it was hard and painful.

I don’t know why I didn’t like him. I don’t know why I didn’t hear the genius in his songs. I. Just. Don’t. Know. Why. Is his voice the greatest? No. But, like his pal Bob Dylan, when he sings his tunes you get the full emotion from it, regardless of the smoothness of his voice. But, even that, over time, I came to really enjoy his singing voice. He could really belt it, sometimes strained, but it always sounded like it was supposed to be that way. “Here Comes My Girl” is what I always think of when I think about that aspect.

As much as the local classic rock radio got on my nerves (when I listened to terrestrial radio), it did start turning my views a little. Then I got a greatest hits album and realized that, man, I do enjoy this stuff. Full Moon Fever hit and it was the final straw. This is good stuff. But, again, I wouldn’t admit it until much, much later. Now, I really enjoy listening to Tom Petty. I will say, though, once you’re outside of the hits, playing Petty as a musician, gets kind of boring. But, these songs are not written for musicians, they’re written to be enjoyed by music fans. Boring or no, they make for great listening. I have played a few of his songs with Threadbare Trio, Clay and Neal.

Tom passed away, then didn’t, then did yesterday/last night. We may still get some new music from him but it won’t be the same. We won’t get to watch videos or new live vids on YouTube. The good news is, we have his back catalog to keep us company, including his Traveling Wilburys stuff. I’m going to miss Tom as I’ve already played Damn the Torpedoes and Full Moon Fever on vinyl and will now have to start collecting his other stuff on vinyl. Rest in peace, Tom. You’re now “into the great wide open…” wherever/whatever that may be.

Salutations™!!

I know it seems like this blog has just become an advertisement for all the things that I 20247780_706025782926597_4164974404776543061_odo, but all the things I do in my life are “life” events. And, it just so happens that the life event today is a little performance piece called Threadbare Trio +1 at Test Pattern. But, this isn’t the regular Threadbare Trio set where we offer comedy, acoustic covers and relaxed atmosphere. This is basically the Threadbare Trio (which is Neal Goode, Clay Howard and me) plus our pal Chad Huskey doing Silver Alerts (also Clay and me along with Corkey McClellan, Doug Davis and a rotating roster of guitarists) songs. That is, we’ll be doing Clay Howard songs.

Now, we may fit a few covers in there and I’ll be acting the fool, as always. So, we’re thinking this will be a hybrid of both bands. A little bit of this, a little bit of that. But, we’re not the only ones playing tonight (which is usually what the Threadbare Trio does). No, we have guests. We have our cool friend Adam Bennett going to do a 30-minute set to open the show and then Arrow Beach will be on to support their brand new debut album. Finally, we’ll go on last, doing our thing.

We’d love to see you there. Test Pattern is a cool little dive (that loves being such) that has a great beer selection, makes good craft cocktails and just has a pretty darn good vibe. Plus, they’re home of The Less Desirables and the entire The Less Desirables Network. The festivities start around 9pm and will go until we’ve had enough fun. Test Pattern is located at 701 North Trade Street. We can’t wait to see you, Dear Reader!

Salutations™!!

Are you looking for something to do tonight? Something entertaining and enjoyable? How about tomorrow night? Well, I have you covered on either or both nights you choose. 17155928_892931550857797_2402619260134345104_n

The Threadbare Trio will be playing tonight at 6th & Vine in downtown Winston-Salem and tomorrow night we’ll be at Finnigan’s Wake, right around the corner, literally on the same block: the 600 block of Trade Street, between 6th and 7th. So, we’re gonna be there from around 9:30-12 or 1 am, who knows. We play, we tell jokes, we sing, it’s all good, it’s all informal.

So, like I said, if you’re looking for something entertaining, we may or may not be what you’re looking for but we’d appreciate you giving us a chance. Here are the Facebook posts for each event if you need more details: Sixth & Vine; Finnigan’s Wake. Come by and check us out. Have a glass of wine, beer or a cocktail and watch the old-man debauchery begin. That’s all I got today. See you tonight.

Clay Howard, Doug Davis, Finnigan's Wake Irish Pub & Kitchen, Neal Goode, The Less Desirables, Threadbare Trio

Salutations™!!

Originally, it was a Clay Howard gig. Then Neal and I said we’d be part. That turned it into a Threadbare Trio gig. Then Clay had life happen and had to bow out and asked Doug Davis to fill in and he agreed. So it’s still kind of a Threadbare Trio gig. Let’s say it’s a Threadbare Trio – 1 + 1 = WTHeck!? It doesn’t matter, it will still be a fantastic singer with a fantastic 12933006_694975917320029_8559165572406661538_npercussionist and some guy sitting playing a bass. The same concept, either way. I promise that it will be entertaining no matter how it plays out.

So, where is this awesome shindig going to happen that I’m jabbering off on? Well, that will be Finnigan’s Wake (official Emerald Isle of The Less Desirables) TONIGHT!!! I think we’ll start around 10pm or so. Just come check us out, enjoy it, enjoy music, enjoy libations and/or dinner and have a good time. It will be worth it. Even if the show would turn out to be a wreck (that would be on me if it does) it will be a fun and glorious wreck. Perhaps you should come just to see how badly I mess things up? Nah, I won’t mess anything up. I’ll truly be the weak link, though.

You can find Finnigan’s Wake at 620 North Trade Street in WSNC.

Clay Howard, Farm to Fourth, Mt. Airy, Neal Goode, The BCPF, The Man Who Walked the Town, Threadbare Trio, WSNC

Salutations™!!

I’m very surprised how fast the toe is healing. Lots of Epsom salts, good wrapping and Neosporin, I suppose. I must say, though, that I have started to miss my “walking.” I can walk, of course, but Doc Z told me no The Man Who Walked the Town for a couple of weeks, so once The BCPF heard that, that meant it was certainly off the table. 13879332_10154300965314373_7406943755997206413_n

I did play in Mt. Airy with my buds Clay and Neal, yesterday, as The Threadbare Trio at Carolina Sky Festival. And, other than it being ridiculously hot and humid, and dropping a bass case on my toe (probably more like around it, you know how it is when something is sore, it – well – sticks out), it went well. One of these days, I’ll actually learn some of those songs.

We have Farm to Fourth tonight so I’m sure there will be food to talk about this week, hope to see some of you out there.
