Salutations™!

Today is the 46th anniversary of Led Zeppelin’s sixth studio album, a double, Physical Graffiti. I really enjoy this album. It’s not my favorite Zep album but it’s not my least, either. What I do find interesting is how much of it is rehashed throwaways from previous albums. Especially when I see which are the “throwaways.” This is not one of the throwaways. And, it’s not often that I get to highlight my friends. I have shared the stage with three of these players, all three on the extreme right side of the video. Clay Howard (whom you hear me talk about a lot), Chad Huskey on guitar and Davidson Smith on percussion. It’s a great song, too. Enjoy!

Anne Bredon, Led Zeppelin, Music, Video

Salutations™!!

Today is the 52nd anniversary of Led Zeppelin’s debut album. It kind of set the world on fire, I’d say. It’s pretty righteous. There are so many tunes from this album to choose from to highlight today. I will say, I like Led Zeppelin II better than the debut, but this one was powerful. I love this song and you know, Dear Reader, that I like to seek out good covers and technically, this is a cover (twice over), written by Anne Bredon and covered, first, by Joan Baez (blech). Plant and Page heard Baez’s version and covered it, their way. Originally, they had it credited to “traditional arranged by Page.” Well, Bredon found out about and now, it’s credited correctly. Those crazy kids. This is a really great version, too. Enjoy!

I can hear it calling me the way it used to do. I can hear it calling me back home.” – “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” (Bredon/Plant/Page)

Salutations™!!

Whew! Caught up! Today is the 41st anniversary of the last true studio album from Led Zeppelin, In Through The Out Door. It’s not my favorite album from them, but for what it is, it’s not bad. Here’s Jason Bonham channeling his pops. Enjoy!

“Well there’s a light in your eye that keeps shining, like a star that can’t wait for night. I hate to think I been blinded baby. Why can’t I see you tonight? And the warmth of your smile starts a burning. And the thrill of your touch give me fright. And I’m shaking so much, really yearning. Why don’t you show up and make it alright, yeah? It’s alright right.” – “Fool in the Rain” (Jones/Page/Plant)

You’d think in this time of “self-isolation” and “stay-at-home” and being surrounded by a lot of vinyl dreaminess that I’d have a lot of time to catch up on some listening. Yeah, you’d think that. But you’d be incorrect.

See, the thing is, while I am home working, so is The BCPF. We work no more than 12 feet from each other. She and I work with different music strategies. She’s more the indie folk/rock stuff from the early 90s on and I’m all over the place. So, while I do listen to music during this (when I’m not in the studio, alone mind you), it’s usually under headphones and listening to streaming.

Since we are both home and working, it’s less practical to put on a record or be mindful of what to listen to next. If we listen to something collectively, it’s Yacht Rock Radio on SiriusXM because we both dig that.

Plus, on top of this, I have been busier than I was before the lockdown. That food and beverage list has kept me steady for the last three weeks. It’s going great and getting a lot of traction but it is a lot of work. There are other lists that may have as much as we have on our list but they are using the Ron Popeil method of “Set It and Forget It.” They put the list up and don’t update it. They have erroneous information and… well, that’s not what this post is about. This post is about records and vinyl and listening and stuff.

I realized, too, that not only have we had limited listening chances but also that I haven’t posted a record-listening post since early March. Almost a month, actually. So, I’m going to make up for it today. This is what we have listened to since March 7.

  • Polvo – Today’s Active Lifestyles
  • The War On Drugs – Lost In The Dream
  • Yacht Rock Revue – Hot Dads In Tight Jeans
  • Linda Ronstadt – A Retrospective
  • Led Zeppelin – Physical Graffiti
  • Ryan Adams – Gold
  • Neil Young – On The Beach
  • Talking Heads – More Songs About Buildings And Food
  • Talking Heads – Little Creatures
  • Amy Winehouse – Back To Black
  • Donovan – Cosmic Wheels
  • Led Zeppelin – Houses Of The Holy
  • Sebadoh – Act Surprised
  • Rupert Holmes – Partners In Crime
  • Corey Hart – Boy In The Box
  • Bob Marley – Chances Are
  • Eno – Another Green World
  • Lambchop – FLOTUS
  • Peter Gabriel – Security
  • Bob Dylan – Street-Legal
  • Various – High Society (Motion Picture Soundtrack)
  • Mary Hopkin – Post Card
  • The Innocents – The Innocents

Since I can’t get by Underdog Records (he’s not open), then we have to rely on our back catalog of vinyl. That’s a shame, right? We only have slightly less than 2500, I mean we’ll run out. I kid. Underdog Records has been selling still. Jonathan is posting on social media and people have been buying from there, the website, which he’s spent a lot of time updating, or from Discogs. He ships flat rate of like $4 or something (check the site) and if you live within 10 miles of downtown, he’ll hand-deliver your items to your door with “no contact” delivery.

There hasn’t been much TLD to talk about so there are not any TLD/UR specials right now. We’ll get back to that when we get back to life. Watch Underdog Records on social media or visit the website and buy some records, would ya?

Until tomorrow, keep spinning…

Clay Howard, Led Zeppelin, Music, Video

Salutations™!!

I was in my studio this morning at 715a and with the exception of about 35 minutes, was in there until 515p. I was working on a political ad for TV and online as well as The Man Who Ate the Town. Add the “Big Job” and I’m worn out. Tomorrow is the “big job’s” culmination so it’s almost over for this year. Today is the 45th anniversary of Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti album. It is one of my faves from Zep and has a ton of great songs on its 2xLP set. Probably the biggest “hit” on the album was this song (at least in my eyes/ears) and this cover is done by one of my favorite humans, Mr. Clay Howard, and his amazing “rock spectacles.” Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

Today (November 8) is the 48th anniversary of that untitled Led Zeppelin album that fans and everyone else just calls “Zoso” or Led Zeppelin IV. But, really, it wasn’t ever officially titled. Is it their best album? That’s debatable. It certainly has the song that is probably the first thing that jumps in anyone’s mind when they hear the words “Led Zeppelin.” Yeah, it’s predictable but it brings tears to my eyes almost every time I hear it. Especially this version and in front of those who wrote it and with Bonzo’s kid (whom I have met and opened for) on drums. It’s a great thing. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

This will be brief but I just wanted to say that I found the absolute best SiriusXM channel, ever. It is called KISS Army Radio and it is 95% KISS and 5% their influences or bands that may have opened for them, like Rush, AC/DC, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, etc. kissarmyradio-v1-1117-1920x1080

I found it late last week and I haven’t turned the channel since. There are live performances, deep cuts, and more. Yes, I have to sit through 17 versions of “Rock and Roll All Nite” every three or four hours, but it’s worth it. Yes, I also have all of these songs and almost all of the versions on some kind of medium, but as I’ve always maintained, there’s nothing like hearing it on the radio.

Plus, you get some tidbits here and there from all four current members about many things throughout KISStory; the earliest and the latest.

This past Tuesday, they broadcast a special SiriusXM-guest-only concert at the Whiskey A Go Go. It is probably one of the smallest crowds they ever played to. Not because no one was there, but because the venue is small. Gene sounded great. The music all sounded great. Paul was there. I have nothing to say about that, I’m reserving judgment. Or voiced judgment, really.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that my love for KISS is fully realized with this channel. I love it.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

©Swan Song

The BCPF and I were working to get the new studio ready to function for a good part of yesterday, but we did at least get by Mary’s Gourmet Diner and Underdog Records and were able to listen to several records before heading to Willows Bistro. Here’s the very short haul:

  • The New Year – Snow – I don’t know anything about this band but The BCPF digs them and that’s all I really need to know, right? Right. It was VG++.
  • Faster Pussycat – Faster Pussycat – I played “Bathroom Wall” in the first major band I was in that had any real recognition, The Blue. Not my favorite band but I couldn’t resist getting it. VG.
  • Bob Dylan – The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan – This is #97 on the RS List, which I think is asinine. I think it’s his best work. Certainly, it’s better than Blonde on Blonde. I hate that album. I would have been one of those folks upset that Dylan went electric because I think he wasn’t as good. The acoustic stuff with him, his guitar and his harmonica, is the best Dylan. It’s rated at VG- but I think it’s in pretty good shape.
  • Eurythmics – 1984 (For The Love Of Big Brother) – I love the Eurythmics and I love the story of 1984, although it’s scary as heck (kind of like today’s world). There weren’t any real hits on here, just the soundtrack of the film. VG.
  • Hoodoo Gurus – 1000 Miles Away – This is just a 12″ single on a picture disc. I am not a fan of picture discs as they tear the needle up, but The BCPF says it’s her favorite Hoodoo Gurus song and you don’t argue with her. It was in the $1 bin and it’s in VG shape.
  • Led Zeppelin – Presence – This completes my Zeppelin studio collection. However, several of the albums, including this one that I got in the $1 bin, are in pretty terrible shape. They were “well loved.” I will be finding replacements for those, eventually. The album is in “good” shape and the cover is in “fair” shape.

Short list this week; end of the month and all. Jonathan was pretty busy yesterday, which is good. He had Ozzy Osbourne’s first album, Blizzard of Oz which I was really hoping to get my hands on but, that didn’t work out. Oh well. I’ll keep looking for that one. Keep an eye on Underdog Records’ social media as there are always new things kicking in there. And, I’ll be doing something with Jonathan for The Less Desirables, too.

Discogs is my go-to for collection documentation. Every album I own is on my Discogs list (except the three that I will have to enter myself) and I can watch my friends’ lists as well.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
Keep spinnin’!

“Well, it ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe. Ifin’ you don’t know by now. An’ it ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe. It’ll never do somehow. When your rooster crows at the break a dawn. Look out your window and I’ll be gone. You’re the reason I’m trav’lin’ on. Don’t think twice, it’s all right.” – “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” (Dylan)
