A Very Murray Christmas, a/perture Cinema, Amy Poehler, Bill Murray, Chris Rock, David Johansen, George Clooney, Jason Schwartzman, Jenny Lewis, Julie White, Maya Rudolph, Michael Cera, Miley Cyrus, Netflix, Paul Shaffer, Rashida Jones, The Less Desirables
So, it was brand new but The BCPF, her mother and her brother and I watched A Very Murray Christmas last night, which was Christmas. I didn’t know what to expect and we decided to watch it since it was only 56 minutes long.
It was star-studded and lounge-ish, but quite fun. It wasn’t a musical per se. They didn’t use songs to perpetuate dialog and plot points, but they did sing throughout. With Paul Shaffer at the piano playing jazzed up versions of Christmas songs that the cast sang along to, it was a good musical selection.
The premise was that Murray was supposed to do a live TV Christmas special from New York City. But, because of the worst blizzard/snowstorm in recent history, no one showed up. So he sat in the Carlyle Hotel’s bar whilst Shaffer played music and a slew of guests showed up to help. Chris Rock did “Do You Hear What I Hear” with him. Jenny Lewis, of Rilo Kiley and Jenny & Jonny fame, sang “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” David Johansen (aka Buster Poindexter, aka New York Dolls frontman) was the bartender and sang part of the Pogue’s “Fairytale of New York” with the rest of the cast. The band Phoenix with Jason Schartzman, Johansen and Murray, sang “Alone on Christmas Day.” Maya Rudolph sang “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” Rashida Jones showed up and sang “I Saw the Light” from Todd Rundgren with Schwartzman, Rudolph, Johansen, and Murray. Miley Cyrus and George Clooney were there in a dream sequence where Miley did “Sleigh Ride” with Murray and “Silent Night” by herself. The highlight of the whole thing, to me, was “Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'” with Murray and George Clooney. That was fantastic and hilarious.
The entire program was great and we decided that this was going to be a new tradition in addition to the 24-hour marathon of A Christmas Story. And, yes, Dear Reader, I did watch about 10 hours of that, just not in succession. I’m a glutton, I know. Oh well, it’s my Christmas, too. Hope you all had a great one and if you get a chance, watch A Very Murray Christmas as I find it great. Since Saturdays are my normal “The Less Desirables Movie of the Week brought to you by a/perture cinema, the Official Movie Sponsor of The Less Desirables” and we didn’t do a movie this week because of the “holiday special,” then let this count. I saw it on Netflix and you should, too. It’s only an hour and it’s funny. I rate it 4 stars out of 5.
Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
