Salutations™!!

Today is the 33rd anniversary of John Cougar Mellencamp’s The Lonesome Jubilee album. It would be another three years before he shed the Cougar part, but he was building clout. To me, this isn’t quite as good as its predecessor but it is still a great album. I used to play this song with my friend Noel Livengood, who has since passed on. This is a decent cover. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

I should have saved yesterday’s long post for today and did a “Friend Friday” for Liz. Oh well, I was excited and wanted to tell about it.

Now, today is the 42nd anniversary of John Cougar (Mellancamp)’s A Biography album. The only real hit on here was this song and while I like the song, the extra-long, egregious, and monotonous intro drives me nuts. Just get to the danged song already. This band/guy, I don’t know which, does a decent job. I have to say while solid, the drummer is kind of goofy and the bass player looks like he just got out of an 18-wheeler. Anywhat! Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

This week’s haul spans several days as we visited Underdog Records on Tuesday upon our return from Raleigh, seeing Belle and Sebastian. So it’s extra long today. Let’s hit it!

  • Kiss, Peter Criss – Peter Criss (purchased off of Discogs because it’s on back order and rumor has it that the company isn’t pressing them anymore, new, sealed)
  • Kiss, Paul Stanley – Paul Stanley (used original pressing that I purchased off of Discogs for the same reason as above. I also have a picture disc that I’m looking to sell. It’s in VG++ condition, this is VG+. This is also missing the poster… argh!!)
  • The Velvet Underground & Nico – The Velvet Underground & Nico (I hate this album but it is classic and needs to be in a collection, new reissue)
  • Talking Heads – Speaking In Tongues (freshly used still in original sleeve bag with hype stickers)
  • Donovan – For Little Ones (part two of a two-record set, we got the first last week)
  • Squeeze – Frank
  • The Rolling Stones – Between The Buttons (early stereo pressing)
  • Squeeze – Sweets From A Stranger
  • Peter, Paul And Mary* – In The Wind
  • The Doobie Brothers – Best Of The Doobies
  • Elton John – Blue Moves ($1 bin find – some liquid damage to the cover but it actually looked like it belonged there and the vinyl is in really good shape)
  • Ray Parker Jr. – Greatest Hits
  • Aretha Franklin – Aretha’s Gold
  • Nat King Cole – Ramblin’ Rose
  • Various – A Chorus Line – Original Cast Recording
  • David Bowie – Let’s Dance
  • Various – 41 Original Hits From The Sound Track Of American Graffiti
  • 101 Strings – 101 Strings Play Songs Of France (because we are both enamored with just about anything French)
  • Echo & The Bunnymen – Ocean Rain (new)
  • Kraftwerk – Trans Europe Express (reissue, new)
  • Sonic Youth – Goo (2xLP box set, which is pretty cool)
  • Buddy Holly – Reminiscing (sealed)
  • Windham Hill Artists – A Winter’s Solstice
  • Donovan – Donovan’s Greatest Hits
  • Harry Chapin – Verities & Balderdash (NM copy)
  • Tony Bennett – All Time Greatest Hits (2xLP VG++)
  • Frank Mills – Music Box Dancer
  • Chicago – Chicago At Carnegie Hall (Volumes I, II, III And IV) (Jonathan said he rarely, if ever, sees the full collection, just bits and pieces. This is the complete box set in VG++ condition with all posters and materials. Great find)
  • Aerosmith – Rocks (Meh, it was $1)
  • Hot Tuna – Burgers
  • Jackson Browne – Running On Empty
  • Steely Dan – The Royal Scam
  • Kingston Trio – The Kingston Trio
  • The Kingston Trio – String Along
  • Carpenters – Close To You
  • Streisand, Kristofferson – A Star Is Born
  • Henry Mancini – 10 – Original Motion Picture Sound Track
  • John Cougar Mellencamp – Uh-Huh
  • Simon & Garfunkel – Vol. 1: New Gold Disc (Weird import from the Philippines with faded, probably copied cover art, it sounds pretty good and has a decent track listing and was only $1)
  • Pink Floyd – Meddle
  • Glenn Miller And His Orchestra – Glenn Miller – A Memorial 1944-1969 (2xLP Mono pressing that was only $1 but is in really good shape. I’d say VG/VG+)

So, as you can see, that’s a pretty good haul. Some stuff we’re really excited to get, some we just needed for the collection and some “must haves.” It’s always fun to go in Underdog Records. We have a little community that we’ve formed being customers over there. I know Jonathan has a few quality turntables for sale in the store right now and some receivers and speakers, as well. If you’re looking to get into vinyl for the first time, or again, or just want/need to upgrade your setup, then you’ve choices over there. And, we all use Discogs to manage and archive our collection (and to provide you links for this blog).

Salutations™!!

We had another great haul from Underdog Records yesterday. Barely beating out Clay Howard to grab a few things, we nabbed the following:

  • Weezer – Weezer (new)
  • The Mountain Goats – Goths (new)
  • Pink Floyd – The Dark Side Of The Moon
  • The Association  – Greatest Hits! (per Clay’s recommendation)
  • Galt MacDermot – New York Shakespeare Festival Public Theater Presents Hair: An American Tribal Love-Rock Musical
  • Emmylou Harris – Roses In The Snow
  • Boston – Third Stage
  • Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band* – Stranger In Town (yes, I can’t stand Bob Seger but I couldn’t pass up having it)
  • Linda Ronstadt – Don’t Cry Now
  • Bruce Springsteen – Born To Run
  • Yes – Tormato
  • John Cougar Mellencamp – Scarecrow
  • Bryan Adams – Reckless
  • Chicago  – Chicago 16
  • Chicago  – Chicago III
  • Chicago  – Hot Streets
  • Chicago  – Chicago XI
  • Chicago – Chicago X
  • James Taylor – JT
  • Arlo Guthrie – Alice’s Restaurant (I know what we’ll be playing at Thanksgiving)
  • Elton John – Greatest Hits Volume II
  • Van Halen – 1984 (I forgot how much I really love this album)
  • Van Halen – Van Halen II
  • Eagles – The Long Run
  • AC/DC – Who Made Who
  • AC/DC – Flick Of The Switch
  • AC/DC – For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)
  • Bauhaus – The Singles 1981-1983
  • Ella Fitzgerald – Ella In Rome – The Birthday Concert
  • Ella Fitzgerald – The Duke Ellington Songbook

We’ve already hit the bottom shelves of our new record case, so, we’ll have to go get another one. Yikes. If you’re not using Discogs to catalog your LP collection (or even your CD collection), you should be. You have a record of what you have in case anything ever happens. And, if you’re into LPs and aren’t going to Underdog Records, you’re missing it. Even if you just want to get back into vinyl and don’t feel like looking for a turntable, he has some in stock that are affordable for those jumping back in.

Jack & Diane or: The Less Desirables Movie of the Week

Salutations™!!

The Less Desirables Movie of the Week, brought to you by a/perture Cinema, was 2012’s Jack & Diane. This is not to be confused with the classic song by John Cougar Mellencamp. The song was great. The film… well it was made.

I can’t really even tell you why I watched this film and afterwards I can’t tell you that it was good. IMDb‘s synopsis is as follows: “Diane’s feelings for Jack — the girl she met over the summer — begin to manifest themselves in terrifying ways when she learns that her friend will soon be moving away.”  It’s also considered a romantic horror film. It stars Juno Temple as Diane and Karen and Riley Keough as Jack.  Juno Temple has been in a lot of bit parts including The Dark Knight. Never heard of Riley Keough? Perhaps you’ve heard of her grandfather. He sometimes is/was known as the King of Rock & Roll. Yes, this is Elvis’ granddaughter. I’d never had known that from this film but all pictures I see of her, she looks just like Lisa Marie.  She’s kind of butched out in this film, though.

So Diane is wandering about looking for her twin sister, Karen, and can’t get her onJack_&_Diane_(film_poster) the cellphone so she ducks into a store asking to use their phone. She seems a bit disheveled but that doesn’t stop Jack (short for Jacqueline, maybe?), who works at said store, from becoming taken by her. Diane, too, suffers from chronic nosebleeds and when she has one of those weird things happen. You see, she turns into some weird monster. That comes into play later.  Oh yeah, Jack gets hit by a car, not critically, just scuffed a bit.

Diane lives with her aunt Linda who tries to constantly mother Diane and Diane doesn’t stand for it. They argue a lot. Linda seems not-to-thrilled to be taking care of Diane.  Diane shows up at Jack’s house and the girls bond. Jack goes to Diane’s house and they argue. Linda comes home and upon Jack being a disrespectful little bitty to her, informs her that Diane will be leaving to go to school in France. This sets Jack off, thus the argument. Jack just leaves sending Diane off the deep end. Jack gets weird phone calls from Diane but it isn’t Diane (but is it Karen?).

Jack gets annoyed when Diane hangs out with Jack’s friend, Chris. Diane leaves when Jack gets upset. Later, Chris finds a video online of Diane’s twin sister, Karen, getting raped. This makes Jack feel bad and she reconciles with Diane. They spend several days together and then one night whilst sleeping Diane has a dream she turns into her nosebleed monster and eats Jack’s heart. As she wakes up, she realizes that Jack’s nose is bleeding.  The days wind down to when Diane leaves and really, I can’t find anything of consequence that happened after that.

I don’t know what the point of this film was. I kept watching hoping something would happen, as it was supposed to be a “horror” film. I know that I should have given it the Eugene treatment and pulled an “E20” or exit after 20 minutes of dissatisfaction. Rotten Tomatoes rates it at 13% fresh and 21% user rating. I think that’s generous. It made a whopping $1,142 at the box office.

I think the monster is supposed to be the anxiety and slight neurosis that Diane has about moving. Why do we hear from her sister but not see her? Or do we? I don’t know. I couldn’t follow the film without answering emails or otherwise. I think it was more of “it’s gotta get better” or “where is this going?” I watched this on Netflix and I am actually abstaining from rating it. It’s worse than The Birds and if I’m going below 1.5 then I don’t need to even try to entice you to watch it. There are plenty of quality films on Netflix to watch, pick one, almost anything and stay clear of this one. It was written and directed by Bradley Rust Gray.

Have you seen it? Do you agree with me? Disagree? Let me know your thoughts and send me suggestions for future MotW!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
