Salutations™!!

It was a busy Saturday for The BCPF and me. Not busy in work, but just a lot going on. But, all of it was fun. Mainly because we did it all together. But, one of the “things” was going to Underdog Records! Here’s the haul!

©E Works/PIAS

Sea Wolf – Through A Dark Wood — It’s a band led by Alex Brown Church. I don’t know what that means outside of it’s on Wikipedia. The BCPF picked this one. New.

Eels – Extreme Witchcraft — Brand new released this week. 180g vinyl with printed inner sleeve, screen printed poster. New.

Various – Singles – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack — This film, while important to early 90s pop culture, wasn’t quite as big as Reality Bites, but it was close. It was a Cameron Crowe-written film that featured a lot of Seattle’s grunge and contemporary rock, as well as some from outside Seattle. 2×LP, Compilation, Reissue. EX.

Otis Redding – Otis Blue / Otis Redding Sings Soul — It was ranked #72 on the Rolling Stone list that matters and dropped to #178 on the one that doesn’t. VG.

Tom Waits – Closing Time — Reissue, Remastered, 180 gram. Tom Waits from 1973. I think he was knocking it out of the park at this time. I didn’t like a lot of his later stuff but his early 70s stuff was awesome! This has “Ol’ 55” which many may know from The Eagles, but Waits wrote the song. New.

Ratt – Dancing Undercover — The third album and last one of those that I cared about from RATT. I didn’t like much of anything after, with the exception of a few songs here and there. The singles were “Dance,” “Body Talk,” and “Slip of the Lip.” VG+ on the vinyl, VG on the cover.

Rick Rizzo & Tara Key – Dark Edson Tiger — I literally have no idea what this is, The BCPF just picked it. I would say that she listened on YouTube to see what it sounded like whilst in the store and picked it up. It’s still sealed. NM.

Huey Lewis And The News – Picture This — I bought this for two reasons. 1) I didn’t have it. I wanted it. I listened to it this week. 2) yesterday was its 40th anniversary (as I highlighted in the Sounds Like Saturday post).

Elton John – Sleeping With The Past — This is a “club” version. The Columbia Record Club version, that is. I have been looking for this because of one song in particular. That song is “Club at the End of the Street.” It wasn’t the biggest song from this album. That goes to either “Healing Hands” or “Sacrifice.” They were released as a “Double A-Side” and it’s confusing. “Club…” did make it to #28. EX.

Charles Aznavour – Ave Maria — We got this in the $1 bin. It’s in VG, probably. It may be able to be cleaned up a bit, but we’ll see. Aznavour is one of the best-selling artists in the world. When he passed away in 2018, I looked him up and saw that CNN and Time called him the Entertainer of the Century in 1998. So, we don’t pass on Monsieur Aznavour.

Jonathan has been going through a lot of new used stock and putting out a lot of great stuff. The “Freshly Used” bins were full. It was exciting. If you watch the Underdog Records social media, you’ll know when Jonathan gets fresh stuff, reissues, new stuff, and more. You can order unused, NEW vinyl by visiting the website. I use Discogs to keep track and make sure I’m not buying stuff that I already had or do a little shuffle at times. It’s cool. You should use it, too.

Until next time, keep spinnin’…

And this hot little trio plays. That’s where we meet. That’s where we meet. Me and you rendezvous in the club at the end of the street.” – “Club at the End of the Street” (John/Taupin)

Salutations™!!

Today is the 40th anniversary of Huey Lewis and the News’ Picture This album. It was their breakout album, with three hits. This is probably the least well-known of the three but it’s a good one, nonetheless. Enjoy!

And, I apologize for not doing a Useless Things Podcast this week.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Yesterday was a “business-as-usual” kind of day for The BCPF and me. Underdog Records, lunch, record listening, dinner. But there are two exceptions to the “as usual” part. One, we got to see Clay Howard, who brought his two kids still at home over to go fishing in our pond. That was cool. And two, we got to have dinner with Paul Jones and we went someplace we’ve not been in a while, Meridian. I have missed the antelope and it was delicious!! Anywhat! Here’s the haul:

©This Is American Music

Margot & The Nuclear So And So’s – Not Animal — Now, this is a used copy that is NM. It is 2×LP and limited to 1500 copies on 180-Gram opaque pink vinyl. The BCPF hears “As Tall As Cliffs” on her Pandora playlists. So, that, Dear Reader, is why I paid $50 for this record. It was a good listen.

Tori Amos – Under The Pink — Tori’s second album, I don’t know if I like it better than the first but it was a good listen. NM.

Caleb Caudle – Carolina Ghost — Local musician Caleb Caudle and I have talked several times. He’s been on The Less Desirables once live and I’ve played his stuff more than once. This is not generally my kind of music but he is really good at what he does. I can’t figure the best way to describe him. It’s country. It’s not necessarily classic country and it certainly isn’t that crapola twangy new pseudo country. The BCPF described this as country & western without the western. That’s sounds about right. How about Country & Eastern? I like that better. This was an amazing record. NM.

Matt Berninger – Serpentine Prison — Matt Berninger is the singer for The National. The BCPF wanted it. We now have it. It was a really good listen, too. Really indie and really singer-songwriter-ish. Good stuff. NM.

The Waterboys – Fisherman’s Blues — This is the best-selling album by The Waterboys which has them reverting back to their Irish roots and stepping away from the rocker style stuff they had been doing. I have three Waterboys albums, but, I want the album that came before this one, This is the Sea because I want “The Whole of the Moon.” I really like that song. This is good, but I prefer the more rock stuff. NM.

Randy Newman – Born Again — I love Randy Newman. This, supposedly was a flop, both commercially and critically. The cover has Newman in a suit and tie, sitting behind an executive desk with white makeup and green dollar signs, which I figure is supposed to be either a shot at or homage to KISS. I think it’s the former. Newman was surprised at the lack of public and critical interest. This is sealed (cutout) so I’m going to say it’s NM.

Huey Lewis And The News – Sports — I have this already but the copy that I have is crap. VG for the media and G for the sleeve. This VG+ on both. VG sounds like it would be “very good” but a lot of times it has pops, crackles and surface noise. I think this will be better.

A decent haul. I know that the Record Store Day list has been released. I’m not overly impressed with the list and don’t know how much I’ll be clamoring for. I think there are a couple of King’s X albums that I would love to have but I’m probably not going to camp out for that. You can see the list by visiting the RSD website. Underdog Records will most likely have just about everything on the list. At least Jonathan will be ordering it, whether he gets it or not is hit or miss and not because of him. RSD is always a crap shoot for the store owners. They don’t usually know what they’re getting until they open the boxes. He will be posting social media previews the week prior. The first one is June 12. The next is July 17.

Underdog Records is open Wednesday-Saturday from 11a-7p and Jonathan does deliveries on Mondays and Tuesdays. Check out the social media (Facebook/Instagram) of the store to see what he got in and has up for sale. You can shop unused, new items 24/7 by visiting the Underdog Records website. I use Discogs to catalog and track my collection.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Salutations™!!

Another Saturday passes that we didn’t get to darken the door of Underdog Records. That doesn’t mean Underdog isn’t busy. Heck no! Jonathan is running himself ragged to make deliveries and has extended the reach to Greensboro, High Point and other places. So, definitely watch the Underdog Records Facebook and Instagram and watch what he’s releasing. Purchasing is first-come-first-serve so be on the lookout. Also, you can purchase new vinyl anytime day or night on the website. If you’re outside of the delivery area or just don’t want Jonathan to drop stuff off at your door, then he offers “unlimited” LPs (I’m sure it’s a little limited) for a flat rate $4.

This week’s “listens” were abundant. 22 albums I got through from Monday-Friday.

And, per usual, this week’s streaming listens comes from Discogs’ shuffle feature and it has to be an album that I own on vinyl (outside of peripheral things like Beeswax Vinyl & More listens), that way it’s like listening to my vinyl but with headphones from my computer whilst The BCPF works 10 feet away. Here’s the list (this is in order of listens):

  • Huey Lewis & The News – Small World
  • Siouxsie & The Banshees – Tinderbox
  • Angel – On Earth As It Is In Heaven
  • Rush – Hold Your Fire
  • Adam And The Ants – Kings Of The Wild Frontier
  • Phil Collins – No Jacket Required
  • Jim Steinman – Bad For Good
  • Radiohead – Kid A
  • Herb Alpert And The Tijuana Brass – !!Going Places!!
  • Heart – Dreamboat Annie
  • The Rolling Stones – Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out
  • The Mama’s And The Papa’s – If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears
  • Barbra Streisand – The Broadway Album
  • Megadeth – Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?
  • Accept – Balls To The Wall
  • 10cc – Bloody Tourists
  • Billy Idol – Billy Idol
  • ABC – How To Be A Zillionaire!
  • The Outlaws – Outlaws
  • Run-D.M.C. – Run-D.M.C.
  • Billy Joel – The Stranger
  • Blue Öyster Cult – Mirrors

collage252420

Whew! A long listening list indeed! It was spread out, too. The BCPF remarked how I went from Streisand to Megadeth. It worked. I love Streisand and I’m not afraid to admit that. But, I was ready for something heavy after having gone through The Mamas and the Papas and Streisand back to back. It worked, as I said.

collage452420

Well, yesterday, here’s what The BCPF and I listened to, actually on vinyl:

  • Timbuk 3 – Eden Alley
  • The Cars – Shake It Up
  • Kiss – Dynasty (its 41st anniversary yesterday)
  • Bauhaus – Burning From The Inside
  • Berlin – Pleasure Victim
  • Squirrel Nut Zippers – Hot
  • Boston – Don’t Look Back
  • The Clientele – Suburban Light
  • Patti Smith – Horses

All-in-all, it was a great listening week. I just hope to get into Underdog Records soon to rummage through the used vinyl.

Again, check out Underdog Records’ social and web stuffs. Buy records. Use Discogs to keep track of your collection and use it’s groovy (see what I did there) shuffle feature.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Huey Lewis & The News, Music, Robert John "Mutt" Lange, Video

Salutations™!!

Yesterday was the 38th anniversary of Huey Lewis and the News’ second album, Picture This. This is my favorite song on the album but it wasn’t written by the band. It was written by Robert John “Mutt” Lange. As far as the band covering it their harmonies are dead on and impressive, but the lead singer kind of gets on my nerves. Anywhat, enjoy!

Clemmons, Doug Davis, Friday Night Music Club, Huey Lewis & The News, J Geils Band, Rick Springfield, Rizzo's

Salutations™!!

Tonight, at Rizzo’s in Clemmons, the Friday Night Music Club is putting on their September gig. It’s a triple-billed shindig with Huey Lewis & The News, J Geils Band and Rick Springfield!

No, Huey Lewis, Peter Wolf nor Rick Springfield are actually going to be there.FNMC

Friday Night Music Club is the brainchild of Doug Davis (yes, that Doug Davis) and offers shows to raise money for local organizations and charities. This month it’s all about Authoring Action. Find out more about them at their website. But, the shows are basically tributes to genres, bands, years, and sometimes a “rock lottery” that is bands made up of people who put their names into a hat for a specific instrument or vocal.

Tonight, it’s three bands doing the aforementioned artists. Tonight is also Clay Howard’s birthday (who is playing the part of Rick Springfield because, well, of course). I’m playing the part of Springfield’s bass player. You should come out and see it. There is a cover of $5 but it all goes to Authoring Action.

Rizzo’s is at 6353 Cephis Dr. in Clemmons.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
