Salutations™!!

Today is the 47th anniversary of Paul McCartney & Wings’ Band on the Run. I think this is their best one. There, I said it. The title track, “Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five,” “Jet” “Helen Wheels” (in the US) and this track. I love this song. Nancy does a great job with it. I just wish Ann would have looked more enthused, but she had nothing to do but some backup vox, I guess. Enjoy!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

There were several albums to choose from today. ELP’s Trilogy, Steely Dan’s Countdown to Ecstacy, the debut B-52s album, Precious Time from Pat Benatar, PIL’s This Is What You Want… This Is What You Get, the self-titled album from Heart, QRIII from Quiet Riot, the self-titled fifth album from Echo & The Bunnymen, and In the Dark from the Grateful Dead. All of them had anniversaries today. But, this is the song I picked to play. I love it.

Salutations™!!

Another Saturday passes that we didn’t get to darken the door of Underdog Records. That doesn’t mean Underdog isn’t busy. Heck no! Jonathan is running himself ragged to make deliveries and has extended the reach to Greensboro, High Point and other places. So, definitely watch the Underdog Records Facebook and Instagram and watch what he’s releasing. Purchasing is first-come-first-serve so be on the lookout. Also, you can purchase new vinyl anytime day or night on the website. If you’re outside of the delivery area or just don’t want Jonathan to drop stuff off at your door, then he offers “unlimited” LPs (I’m sure it’s a little limited) for a flat rate $4.

This week’s “listens” were abundant. 22 albums I got through from Monday-Friday.

And, per usual, this week’s streaming listens comes from Discogs’ shuffle feature and it has to be an album that I own on vinyl (outside of peripheral things like Beeswax Vinyl & More listens), that way it’s like listening to my vinyl but with headphones from my computer whilst The BCPF works 10 feet away. Here’s the list (this is in order of listens):

collage152420

  • Huey Lewis & The News – Small World
  • Siouxsie & The Banshees – Tinderbox
  • Angel – On Earth As It Is In Heaven
  • Rush – Hold Your Fire
  • Adam And The Ants – Kings Of The Wild Frontier
  • Phil Collins – No Jacket Required
  • Jim Steinman – Bad For Good
  • Radiohead – Kid A
  • Herb Alpert And The Tijuana Brass – !!Going Places!!
  • Heart – Dreamboat Annie
  • The Rolling Stones – Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out
  • The Mama’s And The Papa’s – If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears
  • Barbra Streisand – The Broadway Album
  • Megadeth – Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?
  • Accept – Balls To The Wall
  • 10cc – Bloody Tourists
  • Billy Idol – Billy Idol
  • ABC – How To Be A Zillionaire!
  • The Outlaws – Outlaws
  • Run-D.M.C. – Run-D.M.C.
  • Billy Joel – The Stranger
  • Blue Öyster Cult – Mirrors

collage252420

Whew! A long listening list indeed! It was spread out, too. The BCPF remarked how I went from Streisand to Megadeth. It worked. I love Streisand and I’m not afraid to admit that. But, I was ready for something heavy after having gone through The Mamas and the Papas and Streisand back to back. It worked, as I said.

collage452420

Well, yesterday, here’s what The BCPF and I listened to, actually on vinyl:

  • Timbuk 3 – Eden Alley
  • The Cars – Shake It Up
  • Kiss – Dynasty (its 41st anniversary yesterday)
  • Bauhaus – Burning From The Inside
  • Berlin – Pleasure Victim
  • Squirrel Nut Zippers – Hot
  • Boston – Don’t Look Back
  • The Clientele – Suburban Light
  • Patti Smith – Horses

All-in-all, it was a great listening week. I just hope to get into Underdog Records soon to rummage through the used vinyl.

Again, check out Underdog Records’ social and web stuffs. Buy records. Use Discogs to keep track of your collection and use it’s groovy (see what I did there) shuffle feature.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Salutations™!!

Today is the anniversary of several albums. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere from Neil Young & Crazy Horse (#210 on the RS list) celebrates 51 years today. The Carpenters’ self-titled third album is 49. Relics: A Bizarre Collection of Antiques & Curios, a compilation album from Pink Floyd is also 49. Little Queen, the second album from Heart is 43 today. Breaking All the Rules from Peter Frampton is 39. Combat Rock from The Clash is 38. Chicago 17, my personal favorite Chicago album is 36. Spellbound, the second album from Paula Abdul is 29. Slang, the sixth studio album from Def Leppard is 24 as is Long Line from Peter Wolf and All This Useless Beauty from Elvis Costello & the Attractions. Maladroit from Weezer and Down the Road from Van Morrison and Vapor Trails from Rush are all 18 today.  That’s a lot of albums. The last three were released the day before my son was born. I guess you can figure what tomorrow’s post will be about, huh? Anywhat! This is what I decided to play today. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

I am so longing for the opportunity to get back into Underdog Records and rummage through the used albums, some new albums and just to see Jonathan again. This is getting rougher as the time slips away. We’ve eaten well, though.

This week was a lot shorter in both the headphone/streaming listening and the actual record listening. The BCPF and I only got four albums in yesterday. I would say that we were busy but, other than cutting my hair, grabbing lunch and dinner, we didn’t do much of anything. We always listen from as early as we can to dinner time. Then we catch up on binge-watching, which right now is Roseanne. And, I was in the studio twice this week and was on some video conferences, so my headphone listening was lighter, too. Anywhat! Here’s the “headphone listen” list:

  • Don Henley – The End Of The Innocence
  • Breathe  – All That Jazz
  • Styx – Man Of Miracles
  • Electric Light Orchestra – Out Of The Blue
  • The Smiths – Hatful Of Hollow
  • Alice Cooper – Killer
  • Peter Gabriel – Security
  • Queen – A Day At The Races
  • John Lennon – Mind Games
  • Daryl Hall & John Oates – Along The Red Ledge
  • Rush – Grace Under Pressure
  • Billy Joel – Greatest Hits Volume I & Volume II
  • Heart – Magazine
  • Dire Straits – Dire Straits

collage50320

That was it for my private listening. Again, to explain what the “private listening” is, I use Discogs to pick an album that I already have on vinyl. That way, I am listening to what I have but not bothering The BCPF in the process, as she tries to work. So, I’m listening to my collection, just under headphones. Now to the record listening, what there is of a list, anyway:

  • Pavement – Brighten The Corners
  • Various – Hot Tracks (was the K-Tel compilation that brought me out of “Kissdom”)
  • Portastatic – The Summer Of The Shark
  • The Cure – Disintegration (was its 31st anniversary)

collage150320

There you have it. My/our slim listening lists for the week. Hopefully, this week I get more listening time. Or… hopefully, this week we can get some money coming in! That would be even better.

Underdog is still doing deliveries all over the Triad. He started just in WSNC and has moved to the outlying areas and, to me, is overworking himself. But, he’s a dedicated record store owner. Possibly the most dedicated there is. And, he’s the sweetest dude, too. You really should check out the Instagram (especially) and Facebook pages of Underdog Records. You can order new stuff, anytime, day or night, on the Underdog Records website. He can deliver to your house or ship it to you, unlimited LPs for $4. Get you some rekkids! And, obviously, I use Discogs to track my collection.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Salutations™!!

I don’t do a lot of exercising although I really, really need to. Heck, we all need to. Last year, we had one of our rounds of Allan Younger’s Cast of the Charismatic Creative Club, or whatever I decide to call the “Launch Challenge” finalists when Allan brings them in from the Small Business Center to be on The Less Desirables. In one of those sessions, I met an amazing woman.

Liz Hronek

©Liz Hronek, Miss Fit Boss

Her name is Elizabeth Hronek, I may have talked about her on here before. Her business is Miss Fit Boss and she’s not just another “fitness guru” or yoga instructor or nutritionist and all that mess. Not that I’m discounting any of those fine folks; many are my friends. They do good and important work. I love them all and will do anything I can for them.

I can almost wager that none of them went from around 300 pounds to around 150, has been featured on several news channels/talk shows for that and graced the cover of People™ Magazine or other publications because of it. Liz has.

When Liz was on TLD she was telling her story and I was feeling the weight, not only my over 300lbs arse, but, the health, mental and wellness aspect that comes with being a large person. When she and I were talking, the rest of the room blurred like the vignette filter for photos, no one else existed at that moment as she and I stared into each other’s eyes.

Now, don’t think this is some romantic thing, that’s not what I mean. There was just a connection. A spark. A moving feeling. She “touched” me in the heart and mind. I told The BCPF about that and she was intrigued because I have no self-motivating and self-determinating gumption to do anything physical. I hate working out and I hate exercise and I hate anything where my adrenaline gets going. That sounds like I’m lazy, and yes, I am, but that’s not necessarily the reason for my sloth-like tendencies. The BCPF was intrigued because it at least sparked some kind of intrigue in me.

But, Liz and I talked. We talked about her journey. We talked about my woes, not only the weight but the motivation and, again, gumption. She and I talked via telephone a few days later to get a better grasp of my “situation.” She has been on me ever since, but while I’m always glad to get her, “how’s it going?” texts, I generally pass it off as, okay, there’s the check-in. I think that’s an exaggeration. I do “mean” to do something but today, she asked for her update and I said, “my walking is still down, healthier options are up (we have been eating better stuff at home and West End Poke and Yamas and good, cleaner food has been eaten all around), my awareness of what I’m eating is up. That’s a plus.”

Her reaction? “That’s what up!! How can I support you?”  That’s what I love about Liz, she wants to support her “people.” That’s how I look at my “people.” I want to support them any way I can. My response was, “just keep on me.”

From there we went into a conversation about me wanting to do stretches. I am so stiff, that even washing my body in the shower is difficult, even in the warm water. We talked about a schedule for that and, of course, I found excuses and reasons why I can’t do that, knowing if I really want to do it, I can. Then I said, “I am alone in the studio, I’m thinking now would be a good start.” Her: “Ok, what time are you going to do it?” Me: “Maybe right now.” Her: “Maybe?” Me: “Yeah, I’m fighting with myself. Plus, I don’t know what to do. Find some beginners’ stretches on YouTube?”

That was at least a start, right? Then she sent a graphic of “RESET STRETCH” with some low-impact but effective stretches that also included some sitting, which I do really well. I did all of those twice. And that felt good. I asked what she had for hips and legs and she sent another graphic with some leg stuff.

All-in-all, I did those for about 20 minutes, in both sets and rotation. I broke a sweat, which is good and ridiculous at the same time. I was winded, too.

In the studio, I put on some meditation music over the studio monitors and kept the main room dark. The only light was natural light from the studio and the light from my phone. I felt good. She asked what time I was going to do it tomorrow and that I needed to set an alarm on my phone. I should get up earlier and do it first thing, get moving. The BCPF agreed to get me up between her bike and yoga times for me to do that.

I went to New Sichuan and had dinner. Good food, peppers, pork and soup. I came home and instead of going straight for the couch, I decided to file away the “listened-to” stack of records that had gotten to a stack about 12 records deep. I was bending over and kneeling to put the records away. I sent Liz a text telling her of my accomplishment, minute as it may be, it was a big step to me, and I felt good. She sent back, “Yes!!! Now start a success journal and write it in there to remind you.”

I don’t know if I’m going to do that, but since I am not afraid of blogging, perhaps I’ll roll out an old favorite that I’ve ignored for a while and let that be my “journal?” I don’t know, we’ll see. But, if nothing else, this is a start.

All that said, I want to point out that she does this for a living and she is darn good at what she does. She’s motivational, sweet, and somewhat scary. She cares. Find out more by following her on social media as missfitboss, Elizabeth Hronek or by visiting her website.

She is not paying me to pump her up. I am giving this unsolicited endorsement because I believe in her as she believes in me. Liz, I cannot thank you enough. Here’s to more motivation.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

I had told Jonathan that The BCPF and I wouldn’t be coming to Underdog Records for the Record Store Day – Black Friday event, and technically, we weren’t there at the opening for the bum-rush doorbuster event, but we did wait until about noon and went by and the store had settled down. We still found pretty much all we would have gotten had we gotten there in the wee hours of the evening, which surprised us. If this had been the April version of RSD, I would have camped out and been one of the first three in the line and in the door. But, since we went on Friday and spent a good bit of money we didn’t go on Saturday, so this reflects Friday and two that I got on Wednesday. Here ya go:

190759783115

©Epic/Legacy

  • Cheap Trick – Are You Ready? Live 12/31/1979 — This is supposedly an infamous show from The Forum in Los Angeles, New Year’s Eve 1979. The “supposedly” is the infamous part. The hype sticker states it’s from a few different mixes and the first few songs in the set are really crappy production. The sonic quality picks up after the first little bit. Robin Zander’s voice, which I’ve always found strong was a bit shaky in some spots, too. I think they had played a few shows before and he needed a break. Still, it sounds pretty good overall; lots of energy. It was an RSD exclusive, limited to 3500 copies worldwide, and I picked up the last one that Jonathan had. 2xLP. New.
  • John Linnell – State Songs — One half of They Might Be Giants, John Linnell, plays a lot of original songs about 15 different states and one about all 50. I’m a fan of TMBG but sometimes they’re a bit much for me to take. I think this is good for comedic purposes but overall? I didn’t really think it was that great. RSD exclusive, first time on vinyl on green-marbled wax, limited to 1500 copies worldwide. New.
  • Frehley’s Comet – Live… — Not to be confused with Live+1 that came out in 1988, which was recorded in Chicago in 1987 and had two live KISS tunes (Ace’s) and two live from Frehley’s Comet’s self-titled debut and one studio demo track. This was recorded in March 1988 in London and has all the live tracks from the previously mentioned EP along with “Cold Gin” and “Shock Me.” This also had Jamie Oldaker playing drums instead of Anton Fig. A really good sounding recording. I don’t know how many more songs they did and if these were the only ones that made it, or if he only did six songs…? RSD “first,” limited to 2700 copies worldwide, first time on vinyl; orange. New.
  • Jeff Buckley – Live At KCRW: Morning Becomes Eclectic — I will say again that when the world lost Jeff Buckley, we lost a true musical genius and talent. His ability to jump his voice from heavy to heavenly at the drop of a hat was amazing. This EP has five songs done at KCRW sometime in the 90s. RSD exclusive limited to 3750 copies worldwide. New.
  • John Coltrane – A Love Supreme: The Complete Masters — #47 on the RS list, this is a 3xLP reissue from 2015 that I purchased on Wednesday. Coltrane is a “local boy done good.” He was born in Hamlet, NC in the south-central part of the state and grew up in High Point, just down the road from WSNC. This version includes the original album, a quartet session and a sextet session. Good stuff. VG+.
  • The Rolling Stones – Love You Live — Love You Live was recorded on the “Tour of Americas” from 1975, the “Tour of Europe” in 1976 and from the El Mocambo nightclub concert venue in Toronto in 1977. It was overdubbed and mixed from late May to mid-June 1977. So, I didn’t think they could have done that good of a job live. But, the final result was pretty good considering it is the Stones and it is a “live” album. VG+.
  • Heart – Greatest Hits / Live — This is a compilation album of greatest hits, live recordings and new tracks released in 1980. I like Heart. I’ll probably like this. VG+.
  • Streetband Featuring Paul Young – Streetband Featuring Paul Young — I get the feeling that this was a record company money grab as it “features” Paul Young. This is before “Every Time You Go Away,” before “Come Back and Stay,” even before the Q-Tips. His time in Streetband wasn’t very long in the late 1970s. But, he has a great voice, let’s hear how this works out, eh? 2xLP. VG+.
  • Marty Balin – Balin — The other LP that I picked up on Wednesday. Every time I hear “Hearts,” I think of my friend Jim Young. I really don’t know why other than we once had a conversation about it. Same with “Personally” from Karla Bonoff. But, this, Balin’s debut solo album after Jefferson Starship, has “Hearts” and it was only $2 and was in NM condition, although I give the outer sleeve VG++.
  • John Philip Sousa – The Music Of John Philip Sousa On Parade — We say the Piedmont Wind Symphony do Sousa songs early last month and we never knew how much style was in those marches. I thought of them as being boring but one we saw it live, I can’t say that any longer. The BCPF picked this one out. It’s from the National Geographic Society. VG+.

Jonathan said that the Record Store Day – Black Friday Edition was a success, even more than he expected. He did a great job getting it all set up and we are all thankful that he provides us record collectors with a “candy store” we can be proud of. Underdog Records has a good selection of used stereo equipment for sale and don’t forget gift certificates, they come on old 45s. Listen to each new episode of The Less Desirables to hear the TLD/UR special of the week/month. Also, use Discogs to track your music collection no matter the format (other than digital and maybe even then).

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Heart, Led Zeppelin, Music

Salutations™!!

Today (November 8) is the 48th anniversary of that untitled Led Zeppelin album that fans and everyone else just calls “Zoso” or Led Zeppelin IV. But, really, it wasn’t ever officially titled. Is it their best album? That’s debatable. It certainly has the song that is probably the first thing that jumps in anyone’s mind when they hear the words “Led Zeppelin.” Yeah, it’s predictable but it brings tears to my eyes almost every time I hear it. Especially this version and in front of those who wrote it and with Bonzo’s kid (whom I have met and opened for) on drums. It’s a great thing. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

Yesterday, The BCPF and I got to attend a 60th birthday bash unlike either of us had seen before. The Michael family (the awesome owners of Yamas!, Cin-Cin, Waldo’s Wings and Mama Zöe Michael’s restaurants) celebrated the matriarch’s milestone and the shindig was amazing! That’s their business and I won’t go on about it, but I want to extend a big thank you to the family for allowing us to be part of it.

Now, we had breakfast at First Watch, got to see Daniel Butner and his wife outside of Underdog Records and then got to see Jonathan. Our haul is small but we enjoyed it. Here it is:

  • The Who – My Generation — #237 on the RS list this is the debut album by The Who. The album came out in 1965 and in 1967 a music writer for Esquire said it was the hardest rock in history. At the time, yeah, it was. Another writer said it was the heaviest of mod pop ever recorded. I’ll agree with that, too. It’s a good album, a really good debut. This is in mono. New.
  • Radiohead – Kid A — #67 on the RS list. I think that is way too high. It’s not my favorite Radiohead. It’s okay. I went back to read what I wrote about this album when I did the RS list. Here’s what I said: As I said, it’s not bad, just not my thing. I see its importance, but don’t see how it rates higher than OK Computer and The Bends. Both are far superior albums in my opinion. Even Pablo Honey is better than this. Didn’t dig. Not much has changed. It’s 2xLP and new.
  • Elliott Smith – Roman Candle — When I first met The BCPF and realized she liked indie rock and modern folksy stuff, Elliott Smith was the first artist she told me about. He’s tragic because of his life and because of his death. This is his debut album and was recorded in his basement. It is very lo-fi but very Elliott Smith. A good album that showed the talent that would only get better as time went on, even if his troubles got in the way. New.
  • Prince And The Revolution – Parade — The follow-up to the follow-up, I call this. The follow up was Around the World in a Day, which, of course, followed Purple Rain. This was the fourth and final album with “the Revolution” before doing it eponymously for the next one, Sign o’ The Times. It was the soundtrack for Under the Cherry Moon the film that Prince wrote, directed and starred in. It was pretty awful, really. There are some bright spots on this album (“Venus de Milo,” “Sometimes It Snows in April,” “Anotherloverholenyohead,” and of course, “Kiss), but mostly it was scattered and weird. Am I glad I have it? Oh yeah! I’ve never owned it before in any medium, so I’m glad to have it. Just not my favorite Prince. EX/VG++.
  • The Tarwater Band – Walking Across Egypt — This is signed by Clyde Edgerton who played banjo, piano and sang. When I look up Tarwater on Wikipedia, it only shows a duo from Germany. This isn’t that, I don’t think. “Walking Across Egypt” only shows a movie from 1999 starring Ellen Byrnston and Mark Hammil and other folks. So, I really don’t know what this is, but The BCPF picked it up. So, we’ll see. VG+.
  • Heart – Dog & Butterfly — The fourth album from Heart. Musically, this was more on track to what Heart was doing with Little Queen than it’s actual follow-up Magazine. There was the whole skirmish between the band and Mushroom Records at that time, too. This did well, was on the charts for a while and had two hits, the title track and “Straight On.” VG++.

A lot of stuff had been acquired at Underdog Records over the week and was out for purchase and I jumped on some of that. There are some cool stereo receivers and turntables for sale, too. Go in and see what Jonathan has going on. And, listen to each new episode of The Less Desirables to hear what the TLD/UR special of the week is. I use Discogs to keep track of my collection while I’m in the record store and also see what my friends may or may not have. It’s a cool app/website.

Until tomorrow, keep spinning…
Scorp out!
