Aretha Franklin, Bauhaus, Depeche Mode, Discogs, Genesis, Madonna, Music, Peter Murphy, Record Collecting, Record Store Day, Records, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tears for Fears, U2, Underdog Records, Wye Oak, Yes

Salutations™!!

This is this week’s and last week’s hauls together as this week was slammed with video projects. I’m jumping out at it because I have several to go through… Here’s the hauls:

©Merge Records

4/17:

Madonna – Ray Of Light — This is #367 on the RS list that matters and #222 on the one that doesn’t. Comes with color printed inner sleeves with lyrics, credits & pictures. Matte cover, not laminated. 2×LP. New.

Depeche Mode – Songs Of Fate And Distortion — Remix import album (unofficial). The title is a play on their album, Songs of Faith and Devotion. New.

Aretha Franklin – I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You — #84 on the RS list that matters and inexplicably #13 on the one that doesn’t. It’s good, yes, but that good? No. No way. Uh-uh. Forget it. From the hype sticker: Soul Queen Aretha Franklin’s 1967 breakthrough studio album – Featuring signature song “Respect” – Original Mono Recording – 180 Gram Vinyl. New.

Wye Oak – Civilian — This duo out of Baltimore are on Merge Records and we know what that means! Merge Records = The BCPF gets it. This man/woman duo is full instrumentation. Jenn Wasner plays guitar/bass/keys/vox and Andy Stack plays drums and keyboards. He plays the drums with his feet and his right hand and plays bass lines and such with his left. New.

U2 – Wide Awake In America — I had this on vinyl, but it’s just a club edition (not that I care about that part) in VG condition (I DO care about that part). This is a remastered, 180g reissue that was in NM condition. I couldn’t pass that up.

4/24:

Yes – Yes — The bands 1969 debut studio album. Two of the members, Jon Anderson (vox) and Chris Squire (bass), would stay with the band for quite a while, well on and off. Anderson would leave and come back, leave and come back. Squire was the bass player until his death in 2015. 2×LP, Reissue, Remastered, 180 GR, Gatefold, Embossed. New.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Mother’s Milk — This is the first album from RHCP that I ever knew of and still only heard the Stevie Wonder cover, “Higher Ground.” I respect the heck out of RHCP, all the way around, but I just can’t really get into them. The BCPF picked this one out, but I’m glad she did. I am glad to have it in the arsenal. Reissue on 180 gram Vinyl as part of the Capitol From The Vaults Series. New.

Tears For Fears – The Seeds Of Love — This was the 1989 follow-up to 1985’s megahit Songs from the Big Chair. It didn’t quite have the same punch but the title song alone is worth the price of admission. Reissue, Remastered, 180 gram. New.

Genesis – Selling England By The Pound — The penultimate Peter Gabriel Genesis album. I couldn’t tell you a single song from this album without looking it up (I would have guessed “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)” and would have been right, but not for certain). But, I didn’t have it and I wanted it. So, there. Deluxe Edition, Mixed, Reissue, Remastered – Half Speed Mastering. 2008 Mixes by Nick Davis & Genesis. 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl. New.

Peter Murphy – Should The World Fail To Fall Apart — Murphy’s debut solo album from 1986 following his departure from Bauhaus. By the way, the other three members of Bauhaus (Daniel Ash, David J (and his brother), Kevin Haskins) formed Tones on Tail (at least Ash and David J) and subsequently Love and Rockets. Anyway, this sounds great. That deep voice and synth-poppiness are fantastic here. I dug it. Reissue, Gatefold, Blue Vinyl. New.

Bauhaus – The Bela Session — Speaking of Bauhaus, 2018 limited edition colored vinyl (I think, we haven’t opened it yet) 12″ EP. New.

So, that’s the haul from the last two weeks. I think it’s a good haul. Record Store Day is coming in June and July and the list is available if you go to the RSD website. Jonathan has suspended Underdog Records store-to-porch deliveries due to a problem with his vehicle after a car in front of him kicked up a piece of shrapnel and it was hurled at the car like a spear. So, I’ll keep you informed when or if he resumes. Or you can watch the Underdog Records social media for more accurate and timely news about it. You can order new vinyl, anytime, day or night, by visiting the Underdog Records website. I use Discogs to track and document my record collection. You should, too.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Salutations™!!

The BCPF and I got off to a late start yesterday and finally made it to Underdog Records, which was jumpin’, by the way. We bought our four records and went and had some delicious brunch at a new place in town called Clementine’s Gourmet Toast and Juice Bar. Check out The Man Who Ate the Town’s IG for more on that. Here’s the haul:

©Music For Nations/Roadrunner

Genesis – A Trick Of The Tail — This is the seventh studio album by the band. It was released in January 1976 and was the first album to feature drummer Phil Collins as lead vocalist following the departure of Peter Gabriel. It did quite well in the UK and U.S., reaching No. 3 and No. 31 respectively. As I have stated so many times, I have a love/don’t care attitude with the Genesis brand. I love Peter Gabriel. I really like Phil Collins-led Genesis. I do not like Genesis with Peter Gabriel. This is a great album, still with Steve Hackett on guitar, and it sounds amazing! I had never had this on vinyl, only on CD after the remastering in 2007. Gatefold, 180g Yellow Vinyl. Rhino “Start Your Ear Off Right” Release. New.

Genesis – Duke — This is the tenth studio album by Genesis, released in March 1980. The band had been dormant for a bit. Phil Collins moved to Canada in an effort to salvage his failing marriage, while Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford recorded solo albums. Collins returned to the UK and wrote a a lot of material in the wake of the end of that relationship. Some of the tunes were used for Duke and some tunes were reworked for his first solo album, Face Value. This has two of my favorite Genesis songs, because I like hits: “Misunderstanding” and “Turn It On Again.” They were still doing their prog thing at this point but the radio-friendly hits (the ones that I like best) were starting. We had this but it was only in VG or so. 180g Vinyl – Rhino “Start Your Ear Off Right” Release. Limited edition of 3350.

Sebadoh – III — As you may have guessed, this was Sebadoh’s third album, released in 1991. Sebadoh, if you’re not aware is one of The BCPF’s favorite bands. At least her favorite kind of band. We have seen them live once together and I believe she had seen them before. She has a “secret” crush on Lou Barlow, one of the founders and lead singers and guitarists. He’s also part of Dinosaur Jr. and Folk Implosion, probably best known for their tune “Natural One.” She got to smell his hair at that Sebadoh show we saw. It’s classic Indie rock at it’s best and it was a good listen. NM.

Battleaxe – Burn This Town — One thing I noticed yesterday was that someone had come and off-loaded their entire heavy metal collection. Most of it was later-year death metal but this one interested me. I knew it was from 1983 and that it looked like that period. So, I said, let’s give it a try. I haven’t listened to it, yet but I asked Eugene and Bob (drummer from Heavens Sake who was all over this kind of music), both who are my 80s heavy metal gurus, so to speak and neither had heard of them. Bob did some digging and found this: They were a relatively obscure early 80’s NWOBHM band. Imagine Saxon, Motorhead, early Priest…with a raw, 70’s style sound. I heard like 3 songs and liked all three. Would’ve loved it when I was young. They just never caught on. I have recently gotten into the early Judas Priest so I’m looking forward to hearing this. Eugene said he would have overlooked it because the cover looked cheap, but there’s a reason for that. According to Wikipedia (the end-all/be-all of internet truths): …they entered the recording studio to make a demo called “Burn This Town”. In doing so, they garnered the attention of Roadrunner Records and the result was their first album… It went on to say: Once a deal had been struck with Roadrunner Records, the master tapes were sent to Roadrunner Records and the album title was agreed upon as Burn this Town. The record company asked the band for some concept ideas for the cover artwork, so the guys asked a friend and local artist Arthur Ball if he could come up with anything. He then produced the first Burn this Town cover artwork as it is now, but only as a rough proof drawing, and stated that, if it were approved by the record company, he would redraw the whole thing again to a much higher standard. However, when Roadrunner received the proof artwork for approval, they went ahead and pressed 2000 units for a worldwide release without the band’s consent. The original Burn this Town cover artwork is one of the most talked-about album covers in heavy metal history. The graphic looked amateurish, and the band worried what it might do to their reputation. However, the music did the talking and the album sold well. The band began developing a reputation in the region as a solid heavy metal outfit. The sleeve is VG/VG+ but the media is EX.

Sorry that last one was extra verbose, I just wanted to give what I knew about it and let on that I was really looking forward to hearing it.

Underdog Records is open Thursday-Saturday from 11a-7p and Jonathan does in-store pickups, curb service, and store-to-porch deliveries Monday-Wednesday. You can shop his new inventory, day or night, 24/7 by visiting the Underdog Records website. I know I keep teasing this, but there is news coming from Jonathan and me in the (hopefully) very near future. I use Discogs to track my collection, value the collection and sometimes buy for the collection.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Salutations™!!

Today is the 37th anniversary of Genesis’ self-titled twelfth album. To me, this is where they dug in to the sound that I came to know and love from the band. We all know what a huge fan of Peter Gabriel I am, but I am not that big a fan of the PG era of Genesis. The late-70s through 80s was good stuff. And while this was the last album before they completely popped out, the follow-up, Invisible Touch is still my favorite Genesis album. But, this is one of my favorite Genesis tunes. Enjoy!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Dear sweet baby [enter deity here], please let this be over soon. If for no other reason, I want to get back to Underdog Records, see Jonathan and buy vinyl goodness. Amen.

©All the record companies… I don’t own the copyright on these

You know my religion is “non-Prophet” so that was really just symbolic. However, the sentiment is exact and true. I want to get back to Underdog. The good news is Jonathan is doing a lot of deliveries and is still getting in new stock. I don’t buy a lot of new stuff so that throws me behind. I am more about the used stuff and, well, I figured it’s just not as feasible for him to rifle through the used stuff. That’s okay. I have plenty to keep me company here, but there’s nothing like the thrill of bin diving. I love it. Anywhat!

This week, I was home more than usual (usual for the lockdown) and The BCPF had work and conferences via Zoom, so I was under headphones a lot this week. I listened to 23 albums. I should probably try to listen to some podcasts during this downtime but I really want to listen to music. I suppose this is the equivalent of being a chef and having to cook at home, or being a truck driver and having to drive the family to Florida for vacation or per my old job working with the family sand business, why would I go to the beach when I can see sand anytime I want? So, I’m just not in the mood to listen to podcasts on my “downtime.” That’s cleared up.

The criteria for my streaming listening (for this list, anyway) is this: I have to own it on vinyl. I can’t listen to it on vinyl because of the situation, but I want to act like I am. So, I use the Discogs shuffle feature and see what pops up. Oddly enough, on the same day, I had two from The Who and even odder, I had two Yes albums right in a row; one I wish I had drawn after the other started. That worked out for me. Here’s my headphone “haul:”

  • Randy Newman – Good Old Boys
  • Joe Cocker – Joe Cocker!
  • Jerry Goldsmith – Logan’s Run (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
  • AC/DC – Let There Be Rock
  • Tom Jones – Tom
  • The Doors – The Doors
  • Quiet Riot – Condition Critical
  • The Who – Who Are You
  • The Who – Who’s Next
  • Men At Work – Cargo
  • Iggy Pop – TV Eye 1977 Live
  • The Police – Reggatta de Blanc
  • a-ha – Hunting High And Low
  • Yes – Close To The Edge
  • Yes – Fragile
  • Gerry Rafferty – Night Owl
  • Eagles – Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975
  • Depeche Mode – Songs Of Faith And Devotion
  • Rickie Lee Jones – Pirates
  • Firefall – Élan
  • Jethro Tull – M.U. – The Best Of Jethro Tull
  • Genesis – Abacab
  • Joe Jackson – I’m The Man

    ©The record companies

That was a good listen haul, I think. I enjoyed most of it a lot. I didn’t have that I didn’t like, I just would have preferred something else, I guess.

Then yesterday, The BCPF and I had our listening time and we shuffled through these albums:

  • Stephen Stills – Stephen Stills 2
  • Charles Aznavour – Aznavour!
  • Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago
  • Midnight Oil – Diesel And Dust
  • Cranes – Self-Non-Self
  • Al Green – Let’s Stay Together
  • Love And Rockets – Express
  • Elton John – Tumbleweed Connection

That’s what we listened to. Follow Underdog Records on Facebook and Instagram, you’ll see what he’s got going on and you can get into the delivery thing and have him bring you some records. Also, visit the website to order new vinyl. Obviously, I use Discogs and even more so this week. There are no TLD/UR specials right now but I still hope you listen to the episodes. Okay, that’s all I have. Have a great week, stay home if you can, wash your damn hands and stay safe!

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Salutations™!!

After missing a week of visiting Jonathan at Underdog Records, The BCPF and I made up for it. I went on Thursday and we both went on Friday. I missed having new records in my hands and flipping through the inventory. Here’s the haul:

Iron_Maiden_-_Seventh_Son_Of_A_Seventh_Son

©EMI/Capitol

  • Best Coast – Always Tomorrow — I heard this when I was preparing the ad for Underdog Records on The Less Desirables and thought it sounded like The BCPF’s kind of music. I was correct. She dug it. I dug it. New.
  • King Krule – Man Alive! — This was another one that I heard the lead single from and I liked it so I bought it. Once I got it home, though… meh. I like the artistic chances he was taking but it was hard to follow and hard to get into. Both of us were kind of speechless. But, I don’t give things up easily. I’m keeping it. It’s on blood-red, transparent vinyl. New.
  • Bob Marley & The Wailers – Exodus — The ninth studio album by Marley, it was a departure from most of what he wrote prior. Of the songs that ended up on Legacy, which is simultaneously his greatest hits album and the highest-selling reggae album of all time, this album had more tracks than any other. This album contains “Exodus,” “Jamming,” “Waiting in Vain,” “Turn Your Lights Down Low,” the amazing “Three Little Birds” and “One Love/People Get Ready,” co-written by Curtis Mayfield. NM.
  • Iron Maiden – Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son — I still need Somewhere In Time to have all the “classic” Iron Maiden albums that I really care about. I consider their first seven (of which this is seventh and SIT, sixth) the canon that matters. This isn’t my favorite from them but does have some good moments. I always think of a former classmate of mine, Mark Bohannon because he was the biggest Maiden fan I knew, which was odd to me because I pictured Maiden heads to be stoner types with long hair and all greasy skinned (gimme a break, I was new to this scene) and he was clean-cut, kept and wore sweaters and stuff. Anyway, this was something he talked about a good bit. NM.
  • Alice Cooper – Raise Your Fist And Yell — Alice’s 10th solo record and the last to feature Kip Winger on bass and Paul Taylor on keys, both would go on to form Winger with Reb Beach and Rod Morgenstein. The song “Prince of Darkness” was included in the film of the same name from John Carpenter. VG+.
  • Jill Barber – Metaphora — The 2018 album from jazz/folk vocalist Barber. Laidback and very listenable. A good listen, actually. The BCPF eats stuff like this for breakfast, so she, of course, loved it. On “Coke Bottle” blue/green transparent vinyl. NM.
  • Journey – Next — The last Journey album before Steve Perry came along (with Robert Fleishman making a brief stop, first) and totally pop-rocked them out (which is still my favorite era of Journey). I don’t recognize any of these tunes and it wasn’t what I was expecting. I was looking for it to be a little more proggy like the early Journey albums were, but they were kind of in pop mode here, it seems. None of these songs are in the live lineup of played tunes anymore. I liked it, it was just different to me. VG+.
  • Genesis – Seconds Out — 2xLP live album from Genesis. It was the last Genesis album to feature Steve Hackett, thus making Genesis a “three-piece” after this, in which …And Then There Were Three came along. This was recorded, mostly in Paris, on their Trick of the Tail tour. VG+.
  • Frankie Goes To Hollywood – Liverpool — FGTH’s second and final album. That’s sad because both this and its predecessor, 1984’s Welcome to the Pleasuredome are amazing albums. I love synth-driven pop and this is chock full of that. I enjoyed every note of both albums. Amazing stuff, both. I love them. I hate they didn’t do more.  VG+.

Again, it was good to get by Underdog Records again. They have a slew of electronic equipment for sale, either from the store or on consignment. Now is the time to get the equipment you need or want. Listen to each new episode of The Less Desirables to hear what the TLD/UR special of the moment is. Use Discogs to keep track of your music collection or to just do “random grab” choices. That’s fun.

Until tomorrow, keep spinning…

Today is the 46th anniversary of Genesis’ Foxtrot album. I have always made it clear that I am a huge Peter Gabriel fan and I’m a Genesis fan. But, I’m not a huge fan of Peter Gabriel-era Genesis. It’s a good album, just not my thing. Here’s a video of the lead track off the album. Enjoy!

@Geffen

Today in record release history has been the largest that I’ve had since I started doing the “X years ago today this album was released” posts. If it’s not something I have for releases, I move on to birthdays and today, I didn’t even get to that, much less the deathdays. So, let’s run down what I did have today first.

  • Elvis Presley —— Elvis Presley ► Rock n Roll >> 1956
    Genesis —— …And Then There Were Three… ► Prog Rock >> 1978
Van Halen —— Van Halen II ► Hard Rock >> 1979

    Howard Jones —— Dream Into Action ► New Wave Synth-Pop >> 1985
    Depeche Mode —— Songs Of Faith And Devotion ► Synth-Pop >> 1993

That’s eight! However, I did find after posting that the Howard Jones album didn’t actually come out yesterday but March 11. The site that I use, mainly, had it wrong or at least had it right and I can’t find any evidence to corroborate it. It happens, but that’s not important. This was a big day for releases. But, beyond what I had there were more.

● Bobby Darin —— That’s All ► Pop-Rock >> 1959
● Dionne Warwick —— Dionne Warwick In Valley Of The Dolls ► Pop-Soul >> 1968
● King Crimson —— Lark’s Tongues In Aspic ► Prog Rock >> 1973
● Roxy Music —— For Your Pleasure ► Prog Rock >> 1973
● Judas Priest —— Sad Wings Of Destiny ► Heavy Metal >> 1976
● Bob Marley & The Wailers —— Kaya ► Roots Reggae >> 1978
● Rick Springfield —— Success Hasn’t Spoiled Me Yet ► Power Pop >> 1982
● Fates Warning —— No Exit ► Heavy Metal/Progressive >> 1988
● Joni Mitchell —— Chalk Mark In A Rain Storm ► Folk-Rock >> 1988
● ZZ Top —— Recycler ► Blues-Rock >> 1990
● The Fall —— Code: Selfish ► Post-Punk >> 1992
● Dwight Yoakam —— This Time ► Alt Country-Rock >> 1993
● The Mothers Of Invention —— Ahead Of Their Time ► Art Rock >> 1993
● Everclear —— Sparkle And Fade ► Grunge-Punk >> 1995
● Iron Maiden —— Virtual XI ► Heavy Metal >> 1998
● A+ —— Hempstead High ► Pop-Rap >> 1999
● Elton John & Various Artists —— Elton John And Tim Rice’s Aida ► Pop-Rock >> 1999
● Gov’t Mule —— Live…With A Little Help From Our Friends, Vol. 2 ► Southern Rock/Jam Rock >> 1999
● Mark Knopfler —— Metroland [Sndtrk] ► Roots Rock >> 1999
● Peter Pan Speedrock —— Killermachine ► Punk Rock >> 2000
● Jerry Garcia Band —— Shining Star ► Roots Rock >> 2001
● Eddie Money —— Let’s Rock ‘N Roll The Place ► Album Rock >> 2003
● Eric Clapton —— Me And Mr. Johnson ► Blues-Rock >> 2004
● Guns N’ Roses —— Greatest Hits ► Hard Rock >> 2004
● Lou Reed —— Animal Serenade ► Album Rock >> 2004
● Ringo Starr —— Tour 2003 ► Pop-Rock >> 2004
● Triumph —— A Night Of Triumph ► Arena Rock >> 2004
● Kansas —— Miracles Out Of Nowhere ► Prog/Arena Rock >> 2015

Now, a lot of days there are a lot but I just don’t have many of them. But, today, I had eight and the rest of the list was pretty impressive, too. Anywhat I just thought it was interesting. Do you have any of these, Dear Reader? Tell me about them!

Note: I wrote this yesterday but had, just finished when I had to pick up 3B from school, I forgot to send it. So, I wrote it but forgot to post it, so sorry about that.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

I didn’t record The Man Who Ate the Town podcast today because it was a slow day and I would have just talked about Thanksgiving food. I don’t think forcing topics is good for the podcast, so I didn’t. I mean, if you want to read about what I made, check out the upcoming blog post over there about what I did. It should be interesting. R-6033566-1409343720-3911.jpeg

No, Dear Reader, today, I want to talk about records. GASP! I know, right? It seemed like I had a lot of discussion on Facebook today about it and wanted to talk about what I listened to for a sec. First, I was doing some cooking today and usually, I listen to Amazon Prime when I cook (again… GASP…) but I’m trying to get through some of the piled up “to be listened to” stack that is amassing at an alarming rate.

We purchased a new four-cubed shelf for those as to separate them from the main collection. They’re not in any real order and some of them are The BCPF’s and some are mine. So, I did the random grab method with a little prejudice. If it was something that was The BCPF’s, then I put it back and tried again.

The first one up was Tales From Topographic Oceans from Yes. It’s a 2xLP that has four songs on it. Yes, one per side. I really enjoyed listening to 90125 last night and figured I’d go for the older, more proggy Yes for a bit. I can say that it was well done. It was a bit too deep for me, I think. As you may recall from my RS Top 500 list, I am not always a fan of long, drawn-out, tunes. I think that’s why I like pop music so much, four minutes and next. My ADD gets in my way. I didn’t really care for it.

A few weeks ago, I had to admit that I knew nothing from King Crimson. In my “bonus-stack-I-didn’t-know-I-had,” there was the greatest hits comp, The Young Persons’ Guide To King Crimson. So, okay, let’s do that one next. I don’t know if the production was wonky or what, but it was extra quiet in spots and, yes, I know with that kind of music dynamics are important and the breadth is vast, but I don’t know that this is what that was. Anywhat! It was basically “more of the same” as it was with Yes. It was good. Well done, even. I just didn’t get into it. I will admit that I didn’t listen to the second disc. Why? It wasn’t because I was ditching it. A package arrived at my door and it was one that I’ve waited a long time for. Which brings me to the next:

All That Jazz from Breathe. Yes, it’s some very sugary pop music but it’s well written and it’s from my junior-senior years in high school. I sang the songs to an ex-girlfriend. It has eluded me since I started my vinyl journey and was one of my most coveted. I found it in VG+ condition on the Discogs Marketplace (where, like the name suggests, you buy and sell albums to and from all over the world). That and another album showed up together. I sang several of the songs quite disjointedly as I don’t hear them often. I love that album and was so excited to have it.

The next was Hi Infidelity from REO Speedwagon. I had never given it a fair shake and it was cheap from the same seller on Discogs and shipping was free. I sang a good bit of those tunes whilst cooking, as well.

Next was a twofer that is unusual I found out. It’s Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot in the same 2xLP set from Genesis. I love me some Peter Gabriel and I really like Genesis but I don’t like them together, mostly. Nursery Cryme was their third studio album and it was pretty good. I didn’t know what to expect, but I did know I was going to get long songs like the Yes and King Crimson. I wasn’t wrong about that, but I did actually enjoy listening to it. Foxtrot, its follow-up, was good but I didn’t like it as well as I did Nursery Cryme.

I finished off the listening (to this point) with Midnight Madness from Night Ranger. Yes, “Sister Christian.” I love a lot of stuff on this album and that song, in particular, has a special place in my heart. I probably wouldn’t be either the musician I am today or at all if it weren’t for that song. I performed that as an audition to get into this “contemporary music class” in ninth grade. That’s where I was pushed to learn bass guitar and piano. It pushed me to be a good musician. Whether or not I ever accomplished that? I can’t say, but I wouldn’t be anything musical without that, at least not until much later.

That’s my day’s playlist so far, but the reason I wanted to talk about them was the fact that they garnered a lot of talk on Facebook and Instagram. See, I post every album I listen to, twice. Once in the #nowspinning Facebook group from Underdog Records that The BCPF and I, along with many of our friends are part of and then on Instagram copying to Facebook and Twitter. The group is private so only members see that and I’m not necessarily Facebook friends with all the members, but we get good conversations from it. The IG post carries to anyone who is friends with me and follows me.

I know I’m in a good spot when I get Doug Davis, Ed Bumgardner, Lee Wallace, Clay Howard and others in the music community, all of whom I respect as far as their tastes and opinions, to comment and start an hours-long thread about what is “good” or not, or what is a better album or why this may be overrated or this may be underrated. I love musical conversations and when my playlist is at the core of it, I feel all gooey. Okay, that’s probably pushing it, but I really enjoy it. I enjoyed my listening today for all those reasons.

Do you have any comments on any of those albums, or any albums, Dear Reader? Surely, Superfan Damien has some to recommend. I want to hear from any of you, your thoughts or recommendations for albums to listen to. They don’t have to be on vinyl but I prefer them to be. That’s what we’re doing right now. Thanks for indulging me in this long-winded post!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

So this week will be a mixture of the take from Underdog Records and a shload of records that I didn’t know that I owned. Let me explain. About 10 years ago, my ex-wife and my mother went to an auction (they were always going to auctions) and purchased a ton of records. They only wanted to rock records but it was one of those, you take one you have to take the whole thing deals. Well, I didn’t have a record player back then. So they got stored. And, I forgot about them. About 3 weeks ago, my ex-wife asked me if I got the ones out of the cabin. What are you talking about? We didn’t have any in the cabin. She informed me that yes we did. I thought perhaps it was one or two things that I had over time. Well, I had to go in the attic with my mother and she said, there are your records. I was looking through and just like a kid, kept saying these are mine!?!? So, I brought them home and am going through them a little at a time. Many rock albums to add to my collection and a lot of jazz, folk and classical, too. I did the rock ones first. Again, these are mixed here.

  • The Cure – Standing On A Beach – The Singles (The BCPF had this when she was a younger one and had to have it, new)
  • Andrew Bird – Echolocations: River (former violinist for Squirrel Nut Zippers and we saw him open for Belle & Sebastian, new)
  • Queen – News Of The World (one of my favorite Queen albums, new)
  • Bob Dylan – Blonde On Blonde (#9 on the RS List, I really do not like this album at all, new)
  • Vince Guaraldi – A Charlie Brown Christmas (because who doesn’t need this? New)
  • Sex Pistols – Never Mind The Bollocks Here’s The Sex Pistols (#41 on the RS List, VG+)

  • Rosemary Clooney – Rosie’s Greatest Hits ($1 bin, VG)
  • Traffic – When The Eagle Flies ($1 bin, VG)
  • Kenny Rogers & The First Edition – Transition (purchased this off of Discogs, I’ve searched over 20 years for this for my mother, VG++)

This is the Bonus Stack below the line

  • Peter Frampton – I’m In You (VG+)
  • Peter Frampton – Frampton (VG+)
  • AC/DC – Back In Black (VG+, RIP Malcolm Young)

  • The Doors – Weird Scenes Inside The Gold Mine (compilation, VG++)
  • Lynyrd Skynyrd – Street Survivors (one copy each of the flame and plain covers, VG+)
  • Lynyrd Skynyrd – Gold & Platinum  (compilation, VG++)
  • Lynyrd Skynyrd – (Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd) (#403 on the RS List, VG+)

  • Various – California Jam 2 (live performances by Santana, Dave Mason, Heart, Ted Nugent, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, Rubicon and Aerosmith, VG++)

  • Joe Cocker – Joe Cocker’s Greatest Hits (VG+)
  • Genesis – Nursery Cryme / Foxtrot (as the title suggests, it is both Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot in one package, I have Nursery Cryme but not the other, VG+)
  • The Dave Brubeck Quartet – Jazz: Red Hot And Cool (I have no Brubeck, yet, now I do, VG)
  • Foghat – Night Shift (VG+)

  • Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band – Against The Wind (VG+)
  • Alice Cooper – Billion Dollar Babies (VG)
  • Ted Nugent – Cat Scratch Fever (I strongly dislike Nugent and everything he is and stands for, I also would never spend money on him, but these were already there, VG+)
  • Ted Nugent – Weekend Warriors (VG+)
  • Ted Nugent – State Of Shock (VG+)
  • Talking Heads – Fear Of Music (VG+)
  • The Isley Brothers – Go For Your Guns (VG+)

  • Hollywood Bowl Pops Orchestra Conducted By Carmen Dragon – An Evening With Cole Porter (VG)
  • The Kingston Trio – Something Special (VG)
  • The Kingston Trio– New Frontier (VG)
  • Ella Fitzgerald – Ella Swings Lightly (we both love Ella! VG)

So, that’s a lot and that’s only the rock and few that The BCPF wanted to listen to. I have at least 50 more to put in that are of all other genres. This coming Friday is Black Friday and Underdog Records will have a ton of awesomeness for Record Store Day – Black Friday Edition. Go to the RSD website to find out what is coming. Jonathan said he’s stocking 90% of that list, so make plans now. And buy a gift certificate for someone, do it now and get an additional 10% added for no additional cost. And as you can see, we do a lot of cataloging with Discogs and we love it!

And RIP not only to Malcolm Young, but Mel Tillis passed away, too. RIP Mel.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

The BCPF had Friday off so we made two trips to Underdog Records this weekend. We Love_gun_covermade off with a ton of stuff, mostly from the $1 bin – you’ll maneuver a plethora of great finds there, so don’t be afraid of the $1 bin. So, here’s the rundown for this week:

From The BCPFs choices:

  • Joan Baez – Joan Baez
  • The Ventures – 10th Anniversary Album
  • Joan Baez – One Day At A Time
  • Peter, Paul And Mary* – In Concert
  • Peter, Paul And Mary* – (Moving)
  • Linda Ronstadt – A Retrospective
  • Carole King – Fantasy
  • Heatmiser – Mic City Sons
  • Bob Dylan – The Essential Bob Dylan

From my choices:

  • Rodgers And Hammerstein* / Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Irwin Kostal – The Sound Of Music (An Original Soundtrack Recording)
  • Chicago (2) – Chicago V
  • Richard Rodgers – Slaughter On Tenth Avenue – The Sound Track Album
  • Henry Mancini – Brass, Ivory & Strings
  • Tchaikovsky* – Kraft* & Alexander* – 1812 – Nutcracker Suite
  • Bette Midler – The Rose – The Original Soundtrack Recording
  • Henry Mancini – Breakfast At Tiffany’s (Music From The Motion Picture Score)
  • Cheap Trick – Dream Police
  • Cheap Trick – Cheap Trick
  • Genesis – Trespass (MCA Records, MCA Records
  • Paul Davis (3) – Cool Night
  • The J. Geils Band – Bloodshot
  • Kiss – Rock And Roll Over
  • Kiss – Love Gun (first KISS record I ever owned)
  • A Vic Damone/Strativari Strings album that I can’t find on Discogs at all so I’ll have to log it, my self.

So, I think that was a great haul. Do you have any of these on vinyl, Dear Reader? I’d love to talk vinyl collecting with you. Meet me at Underdog Records some day and let’s talk. Even if you don’t meet me, go see Jonathan and buy some records. Listen to The Less Desirables each week to find out what the TLD/Underdog special is for that week. Also, if you are a collector of music and you’re not logging your vinyl, and even your CDs, then you’re totally missing out on a true collecting experience. Have a great Sunday (or Easter if you are so inclined).

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
