Salutations™!!

Happy Solar Circumnavigational Anniversary Day to my father! He’s a good man. He has taught me a lot about business, life and just about everything else important in my life. We don’t agree on a lot of things, but he and my mother always let me be me, no matter how much it pained them. Happy birthday, Pop!

Salutations™!!

I’ll do the record haul post tomorrow. Today it’s important to talk about Father’s Day. I can go on and on about being a dad and I can talk on and on about my own dad. My dad is the best man I know and the greatest inspiration (along with my mom) in how I live my life. Sure, we may be on totally different paths but the beauty of that is, they encouraged me to find my own footing, be my own man. I share the same name as my father as my son shares that name with both of us. 15965375_10154740755025490_3295274378463804499_n

We recently had a discussion in the TBD Group and the question about our biggest hero or inspiration came up and I said it was my dad. He taught me to be a man, be my own man. He taught me what I know in business (again as did my mother). He taught me the true “art of the deal” (not to be confused with the Big Cheeto) and how to negotiate my needs and to always look out for both parties. Sure we look out for #1 but no reason both parties can’t be #1, right?

My dad taught me to give folks the shirt off my back (although no one wants to see that) who need it. We certainly aren’t rolling in but we aren’t living on the streets, either. So, we give what we can when we can. My dad is no bleeding-heart liberal like The BCPF and I are, but he still has compassion for those in need.

Again, I can go on and on and on, so I won’t do that. I just wanted to write some stuff about my “Pops” and wish him and all my friends and readers who are dads, a happy Father’s Day. I love ya, Dad. You’re the greatest!

Salutations™!!

First off, I want to say “happy father’s day” to all the dads out there, whether they’re dads, step-dads, furry kids’ dads, father figures, all of you. My life would be nothing like it is without my own Ma Père and I’ll get to see him in a few hours. He made me the man I am today, even if it took a while for me to catch on. Thanks, Dad. 15965375_10154740755025490_3295274378463804499_n

We went to Mary’s Gourmet Diner first and then to Underdog Records. We took a detour and went to Vibes Up Winston-Salem and talked with my friend Carly Sink about crystals and other hippy stuff. I say that with complete love because I love hippies, heck I married one. Back home to hear some of our spoils and then to Willows Bistro. Here’s our very short, but rewarding haul!

  • Pavement – Slanted And Enchanted – #135 on the RS list, which boggles my mind. I’m not saying it’s not deserving of the list but jeez o’pete, this can’t be that high on the list. It could be back in the 300s or something but 135? Nah. It’s The BCPF’s favorite Pavement album which contains her favorite Pavement song, “Summer Babe (Winter Version).” New.
  • Iggy Pop – TV Eye 1977 Live – It’s Iggy, a New Wave/punk icon, and The BCPF loves that stuff, so she wanted this and who am I to say no? VG+.
  • Pink Floyd – Ummagumma – A really rough version of this 2xLP but it’s still a good listen. I really enjoy record 2 best with all the members doing their own compositions. I mean who doesn’t like “Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict?” The album is graded as VG-. I think that’s generous, but that’s what I’ll go with.
  • Jethro Tull – War Child – “Bungle in the Jungle” is on this one. I don’t completely get Jethro Tull but I am not against it, either, so I figured why not? VG++.
  • Graham Parker And The Rumour – Squeezing Out Sparks – #334 on the RS list. Why not just switch the two we got this haul and I’d be okay with that. This should have been 135 and the Pavement album 334. I’m just sayin’. But, this was a great record, I enjoyed all of it! It was a $1 bin find but I think that was because the cover was a bit chewed up. The vinyl was VG/VG+, not a skip nor crackle.

That was it. Just five this week. Funds are tight and we have a trip to Boston to save for, so that was the dealio. Jonathan is taking in a lot of used stuff but he’s awaiting final approval on his offers. When that happens a lot of fresh used stuff will be coming in. Keep an eye on Underdog Records’ social media to find out what! Also, they post about new releases as well. And don’t forget to listen to The Less Desirables to hear the TLD/Underdog special of the week!

Discogs recently updated their Android app and I couldn’t be more pleased with it. It’s UI is great and aesthetically pleasing. It does all I want it to do in my collecting and allows me marketplace access and a randomizer to do random grabs. Check it out and start collecting.

3B, Beard, father, Life, Life as It is, Moustache, Mustache, Shaving, Son

Salutations™!!

So, today was another milestone in the life of being the paternal unit of 3B. Next month is the biggest he’s done yet but right now we’ll talk about the first time he shaved. Yeah, I know it’s a little thing but to me, it’s a big deal.20180416_215626

He’s had to deal with spotty growth which is normal for a young man, but we’re going to get those splotchy spots filled in. Whilst at the store yesterday, we purchased him a Gillette razor and shaving gel. He was ready last night but I talked him into waiting until after his shower this morning.

The important part, I told him, was that you don’t move the razor sideways. Always with the grain and with the direction the blades face. He did okay. He was a little timid with the razor but he’ll get it. He wanted to leave a little on his chin and he wanted to keep his mustache, which is still a little thin, but it’s a start. I gave him some cooling gel to use afterward. He said it felt funny, tingly, but it looked good. There were a couple of spots he missed but, as I said, he’ll get it.

I was his age when I started shaving, using an electric razor. That never got me where I wanted and you can see where my beard is today and I couldn’t do that with an electric razor. Those are for when you are shaving everything, at least in my experience. I was in college before I used a real razor for the first time. I just wanted to get him started.

We’ll see when he does it again. I figure a few weeks or maybe even a month would be a good routine until the hair starts coming in thicker and more often. I have to shave every other day, he’s got a way to go for that. But, he’s shaving now…

Birthday, Dad, David Bowie, Elvis Presley, father, Stephen Hawking

Salutations™!!

15965375_10154740755025490_3295274378463804499_n

One of my most overused pictures but I love it. It tells a story.

So, I know it’s cliche to say that your father is the greatest man you’ve ever known. I know that phrase gets over-used for whatever man is being talked about. But, I don’t care because, to me, Ma Père is the greatest man I’ve ever known. To me, probably the greatest man that has ever lived. While we don’t always agree on things like politics or religion (or the lack thereof), it’s still because of him that I strive to be respectful, honest, helpful, remarkable and someone that everyone comes to for “that thing that you know.”

My dad is the epitome of the standard. Not standard in the mainstream sense. Standard as in the bar is here, try to overshoot it. It never happens. No matter how hard I try I will never be that man. Perhaps to 3B, one day I’ll be that standard. But, for me, I can never meet or match the man that he is. I can find twenty more ways to say it but I mean every single word of it and feel about a hundred times more strongly than the words that I would write. He is my rock, my foundation and everything that I strive to be, not only in a man but being a father.

Today, January 8th, on a day that he shares with Elvis (he’d be 83, David Bowie (he’d be 71) and Stephen Hawking (he’s 76), Ma Père turns the big 7-0. I used to think 70 was old but I see him working just as hard as he ever has, just doing different things. I see him one of the healthiest people I know and strongest, still. So, it’s not old, it’s advanced. Here’s to you Pops! You’re awesome and I love you so very much. Happy solar circumnavigational anniversary day!!

3B, father, Father's Day, Mary's Gourmet Diner, Old Nick Williams Whiskey, The BCPF, Underdog Records, Willow's Bistro

Salutations™!!2015-11-27 10.17.33

So, yesterday was Father’s Day. I had a great one. Started with brunch with my baby, The BCPF, at the brand new Sweet Potatoes restaurant. Then we went to grab 3B. Went to my folks’ place to see my own Pops and then we came back home, set up our event tent, put a fan outside, our Bluetooth-enabled speaker, some Top 40 Countdown for this week in 1986 on SiriusXM, drank a little brew and just had a fantastic time with my family. We had about 5 hours out there. 3B hung out with us, talked with us.

Combined that with the awesome Saturday I had with my girl and it was an amazing weekend. Underdog Records, Mary’s Gourmet Diner, Old Nick Williams Spirits, Willows… it was just too cool. Thank you to The BCPF and 3B for making my Father’s Day so great. Happy Dad’s Day to Ma Père and all the dads that are my friends, colleagues, readers, listeners, and followers. You are so very important to me, mean the world to me. Yeah, I know I use the picture a lot, but it’s a good one with my dad.

Birthday, Dad, David Bowie, Elvis Presley, father

Salutations™!!

Today is Ma Père’s birthday. As I say to him, happy solar circumnavigational anniversary day to him. He’s the greatest man I’ve ever known. I know I say that every year, every day, even, and I know that I’m biased. But, I think some others are in agreement with me. I see it from them. How can you not love the man? He’s just great. If when I die, I can say that I’m at least a fraction of the man he was, I’ll have died a happy and fulfilled man. If I can be only slightly the father he is, then 3B will have had an awesome one. I am proud to carry his name, to which I also gave my son. Happy birthday, Pop. I love you immeasurably.

Oh! And, happy would-be birthday to Elvis Presley and David Bowie, today, too.

Birthday, Family, father, mother

Salutations™!!

There was a time about 10 years ago that I got to see Ma Mère every day, at least every week day. We worked together from 1986 until, well, now. I do go in about once every two to three weeks to take care of some office and paperwork. But, that’s just once every two to three weeks. I do live about two football fields away from Mes ‘Rents. That’s not lost on me. But, because my schedule is so hectic and tight, I don’t get over to see my folks very much, at all. I do talk them about once a week, or I try to. I can’t get the time lost due to

img_20160916_202805

Ma Père et Ma Mère

hectic or busy. I realize this.

This week, though, I’ve had the fortune of spending not one, but two mornings and quality time with my mother. We got breakfast, trying to catch up, talk family goings on and just spending time. Some of it is because my birthday is on Sunday and some of it is because the timing worked out. We have a history on my birthday, well, beyond the obvious. There’s just traditions that we have that we try to maintain. Sometimes we do and sometimes we don’t. Today we did and we didn’t. I’m not trying to be cryptic but just that we have our things and that’s between us.

My point is this, we had time together that we’ve not had in a while and that’s what I enjoyed most about it. I am going to work to make sure there are more times that we can do that. And, I want to make sure that I don’t wait until my next birthday to have that time. So, Mom and Dad, we’re hanging more, deal with it! And, I love ya both.
