Salutations™!!

The BCPF and I got up early, ate breakfast outside in the cold at Young Cardinal, went record shopping at our favorite “candy” store, Underdog Records, and listened to good music yesterday. A laid-back and relaxing day. Here’s the haul.

@Mercury

Eels – Daisies Of The Galaxy — The BCPF had Jonathan order this for her. She used to work at Old Salem and when she was preparing the store she worked in for opening, she would play this album to get her in the mood. It takes her back. I can dig it. Eels are a good “band.” It was a fun listen. New.

Def Leppard – High ‘N’ Dry — Def Leppard’s second album, its biggest hit was “Bringin’ on the Heartbreak.” I am not a fan of most of Def Leppard’s early stuff. This album and On Through the Night just don’t do it for me, but I thought it important to own it. It was the last with Pete Willis on guitar before Phil Collen came into the band. New.

The War On Drugs – Future Weather — A six-song EP from one the BCPF’s newest favorite bands. They are a good band, too. New.

Various – Live From High Fidelity: The Best Of The Podcast Performances — Limited Edition, Translucent Green. Limited edition pressing of 1,000 for Record Store Day, 2014. We got it still sealed which means it’s still new even though it was previously owned. The performances were from many indie singers including Grant-Lee Phillips (who was the Troubadour on Gilmore Girls) and Sam Phillips (ex-wife of T-Bone Burnett) who was the “lala” song lady, also from Gilmore Girls. The two Phillips were not related at all.

Donna Summer – She Works Hard For The Money — I’m not sure I have the right version listed here because this is a “club” pressing. CRC which means “Columbia Record Club.” But, I do have it. VG+.

Manos Hadjidakis – Never On Sunday (Original Sound Track Music) — Mono. Original sound track from Jules Dassin’s motion picture “Never On Sunday” staring Melina Mercouri. On the back cover there is a resume of the movie and a profile of Manos Hadjidakis. I love movie soundtracks and even though I’ve not heard of this film, why not? It was like $3 and while it’s from 1960, it’s still sealed. The cover shows wear but I’m sure the vinyl is in NM condition.

That’s the haul. Short but sweet. Don’t forget to get yourself or a loved one (or tell your loved ones you want one) an Underdog Records Gift “Certificate.” They’re done on old 45RPM records. It’s cool. It helps Jonathan. It makes a great gift. Do it! Shop for new vinyl day or night, 24/7 by visiting the Underdog Records website. Use Discogs to keep track of your collections, no matter the format.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

“Onetta there in the corner stands and wonders where she is. And it’s strange to her, some people seem to have everything. Nine A.M. on the hour hand and she’s waiting for the bell. And she’s looking real pretty just wait for her clientele.” – “She Works Hard For the Money” (Omartian/Summer)

Salutations™!!

Yesterday, The BCPF and I went to Underdog Records, first, then we made a stop at City Beverage who was having a tent sale for wine and such. We got to hang out with our friends the Dyers and then had lunch. We stopped at Publix and got some wine for her along with a few essentials. Then home to listen to rekkids. Here’s the haul:

©EMI

Queensrÿche – Empire — This is one of my favorite albums from the 90s, which came out in 1990. Queensrÿche is one of my all-time favorite bands, at least through the album after this one. My favorite album from them (and my second fave all time) is Operation:Mindcrime but I didn’t even know anything other than “Gonna Get Close to You” from QR until this album. I didn’t know of Geoff Tate’s range, the band’s intricate progressions, anything. So, this was reissued and I had to have it. It was a bit pricey but I had to have it, nonetheless. 2xLP. New. Green vinyl.

U2 – All That You Can’t Leave Behind — 2×LP, Special Edition, 20th anniversary edition. The album celebrated 20 years on Friday. This was the release of that. I have never had this on vinyl and don’t know that it was even released on vinyl 20 years ago. But, here we are. This album contained “Beautiful Day,” “Stuck In A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of,” “Walk On” and more. New.

Europe – The Final Countdown — Here it is. One of the most “annoying” hair band albums of the mid-to-late-80s. And, I love it. As overplayed as the title track is, I still love it. I have always loved it and will always love it. “Carrie” is one of the best power ballads of all-time in my opinion. I was so glad to get this album. It was reissued on “clear vinyl with hint of purple” according to its hype sticker. It’s pretty. New.

Devo – Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! — #442 on the (real) RS List. “Golfball-white vinyl” LP in standard sleeve with reproduction inner sleeve. Limited edition of 4,000 copies. Their cover of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” is on this. New.

Eels – Earth To Dora — A new release from one of The BCPF’s favorite “bands.” I say it that way because it’s basically Mark O Everett’s show with revolving “band” members. It’s a good listen; I enjoyed it. New.

So, I got a new album from Mipso but it’s not on Discogs yet and I have to put it in myself, I guess. When I do, or if it shows up, I’ll include it on next week’s haul.

I got three of my needed KISS collection items this week from my Kousin Marvin in Pittsburgh. These are the three:

Kiss – Alive III — recorded from the Revenge tour, the album’s “live” tracks were taken from three shows (Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis) that happened a mere 24 days after I saw the tour in Greenville, SC. It’s a beefy live album and I have always loved it. 180g, gatefold. Thanks, Marvin! New.

Kiss – MTV Unplugged — The MTV special debuted on Halloween night, 1995. I watched it at the apartment of the drummer of the new band I was part of, Bobby Richardson of Heavens Sake (although we weren’t named that yet). We knew from some internet leaks that there was going to be a reunion of sorts for this show. We watched and enjoyed it. At least I did. I will say that I think one of Paul Stanley’s greatest vocal performances of all-time came during “I Still Love You” on this program. The album itself was released on The BCPF’s 21st birthday. Thanks, Marvin! 180g. New.

Kiss – Carnival Of Souls: The Final Sessions — So, this was the album that KISS was working on when they did the MTV Unplugged show/album. The popularity of that show/album led to a full-blown KISS reunion with Ace and Peter and put this album on “hold.” I say hold. I think it was going to be full-on abandoned. It’s a grunge album in all its aspects. Nothing that KISS was known for, at all. Do I think it’s their greatest album? Nope. But it’s a great album for what it is. I have had to convince others or even practice what I preach on a few KISS albums and what I preach is, “don’t think of it as a KISS album. Think of it as a (fill in the genre blank) album.” Plenty of good things on this, including Bruce Kulick’s lead vocal debut. Thanks, Marvin! 180g. New.

It was a good, short haul. I almost cried during the listening of Empire and The BCPF actually used her turn to let me hear it first. We almost always start with her on Saturdays. I rewarded her with some (attempted) singing of nearly every tune on the album. Lucky her. Lucky me!!! Jonathan rearranged the store as is customary for post-RSD events. But, he wasn’t thinking about RSD Black Friday (still I think it shouldn’t happen) when he did it. He may or may not switch that before then.

But, Underdog Records is open Thursday-Saturday from 11a to 7p and Jonathan ships/delivers records Monday-Wednesday, weather permitting. Check out their website to order new vinyl 24/7. I use Discogs to track my collection.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Salutations™!!

So, I promised that I’d make up for making Spinning Sunday “silent.” Here’s the haul from Underdog Records:

_music

©EWorks

  • Eels – The Deconstruction – 2×10″ LP in yellow. The BCPF is a fan of Eels and this was the newest thing. So, we got it! New.
  • Priest – New Flesh – I have become a fan of the band Ghost but have, oddly enough, never pulled the trigger on purchasing an album, on vinyl or otherwise. Ghost is a Swedish “Heavy Metal” band. Apparently, at least one of Papa Emeritus’ former “Nameless Ghouls” is in this band. But, it doesn’t necessarily sound metal. It sounds like a grinding Depeche Mode. I liked what I heard when Jonathan played it in the store and we got it. New.
  • Elvis Costello – My Aim Is True – #168 on the RS List. My dear pal Patrick Ferguson had it in his hands and allowed me to have it so I could add it to my collection and mark it off the list. VG++.
  • Ozzy Osbourne – Bark At The Moon – I know a lot of people are Randy Rhoades folk when it comes to Ozzy. I liked Randy, but I loved Jake E. Lee, too. In fact, my favorite album he was on (and my favorite Ozzy album altogether) is The Ultimate Sin. I have played the title cut of this album in a past band and it was always one of my favorites to play. VG.
  • Small Faces – 78 In The Shade – Okay, I’ll admit that I know little-to-nothing about Small Faces. I know that Steve Mariott was the vox. But, because I figure I need to have some, this was there, and just “why not?” VG++.
  • Wang Chung – Mosaic – Yeah, I love my cheesy 80s stuff and here are some of the biggest culprits. “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” and “Let’s Go” were the big hits on this, I believe. Near immaculate vinyl and plays great, according to Jonathan. VG++.
  • Bob Dylan – Hard Rain – A live album from Dylan. The BCPF loves him, we collect him. That’s how it is. VG+.
  • Corey Hart – First Offense – “Sunglasses at Night.” Yes, that one. I did mention the 80s cheese, right? Yeah, here’s my backup on that.

Though it was a short week, we had fun with it, had fun hanging around our friends, and drank a good bit of wine and beer. But, Underdog Records allowed us to keep our purchase with them while we walked to the festival.

Discogs helps me keep my collection organized and I love its random album ability. You should try it.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
