500 W 5th, a/perture cinema's street-side cinema, Downtown Winston-Salem, DWSP, Elephant in the Room, Incendiary Brewing Company, Stitch Design Shop, UNCSA Presents, Yamas Mediterranean Street Food

Salutations™!!

So, yesterday was the end of the “Big Job 2020.” A refresher here: the big job is always the videos and voice-overs for the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership’s Annual Excellence Awards. The Excellence Awards are always at the annual meeting of the DWSP in February and highlights companies, businesses, people and events that made a significant contribution to Downtown Winston-Salem the previous year. Thus, this year the awards were the 2019 Excellence Awards.

In short, the winners were (in no particular order): Yamas Mediterranean Street Food, 500 W 5th, Elephant in the Room, Stitch Design Shop, a/perture cinema’s street-side cinema,  Incendiary Brewing Company, and UNCSA Presents.

Instead of giving you a description of each one, I’m just going to let you see the videos. So, yes, it’s a video but a different kind. Note, there is a space of about five seconds between each winner. It starts with a/perture and ends with 500 W 5th. That’s how you know you’ve seen them all.

I got a lot of compliments and the winners were all “thrilled” with their vids. At least that’s what I’m told. I am always looking for ways to expand my skill sets and this is always fun, yet intensive for me. The hardest part is gathering all the info, gathering the visuals and writing the copy. Then comes the VO and then making the videos. Anyway, I’ve rambled enough. Here’s the video… enjoy!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Remember when you used to do the #FF on Twitter just a few years back? It stood for Follow Friday or Friend Friday (according to who you asked) and as far as I can tell, no one really does that any longer and whilst I’ll admit I was slack on that on Twitter, I will also say that Twitter isn’t my main social media platform and I just didn’t do it. But, I think it was a good idea and I’d like to pick that back up, except do it here on this blog.

I have a slew of friends that are interesting folks. They may have businesses, they may be musicians, they may just be eclectic as heck, whatever! I just think they need to be highlighted more because they bring awesomeness to the world and we’re lucky to have them here in WSNC.WashingtonPerk_logo_250px

If you’re in the Downtown WSNC area and need to get your milk, sugar, peanut butter, beer, wine, soft drinks, napkins, paper towels, fresh fruit, potato chips, toilet paper, coffee, a latte, a good sandwich and many other “provisions,” then there’s really one place you need to know about. That place is Washington Perk and Provision Company.

Washington Perk and Provision Company started in the Washington Park area and expanded into the downtown area when an art gallery became available in the Chatham Building at the corner of Fourth and Cherry. They sold the original location and are focusing on the downtown location.

They buy fresh fruit several times a week. They have a wall of beer and wine, much of it locally brewed and fermented. Ashe County Cheese can be found in the coolers at the Perk. Mexican Coca-Cola is sold at the Perk and that’s made with real sugar, not that nasty high-fructose corn syrup that most of our Cokes have. Le Bleu water in various sizes. Milk, butter, cheese and probably other dairy items from Homeland Creamery.

All the toiletries that you may need are available at the Perk, too. Get toothpicks, napkins, hot sauces and canned goods right there.

They have a full coffee shop for your latte and Americano needs. This includes various teas and drips, too.

There are several varieties of potato chips, cheese puffs and other bagged goodies in the back of the store. They have dried fruits, bread and other various munchies.

One of the best parts is the deli counter in the back that can make you a fantastic sandwich and they’re really affordable. One of my faves is the “Italian Stallion” which is a few Italian-style deli types of meat on a hoagie roll with cheese and whatever fixings you want.

Lastly, but not least(ly?), there’s Wolfie’s Custard. They purchased the company a few years back and they have around 15-20 different flavors. Most of those you can get in cold weather as well as always in the warm weather.

Washington Perk and Provision Company is located at 401 W Fourth Street in Downtown WSNC.

Full disclosure, Washington Perk and Provision Company has the distinction of being the only dual sponsor of both The Less Desirables and The Man Who Ate the Town podcasts. So, I may get compensation from them, however, this is an honest and heartfelt (and was not asked to make it) recommendation.

—

Around the corner from the Perk, on Fifth Street, is Small Batch Beer Company.

Small Batch BeerSmall Batch started back in 2014 and before they opened, the (then) three partners Ryan, Tim and Cliff contacted The Less Desirables about coming on and talking about their beer and brewery. They were one of the pioneers of the downtown beer scene (after Foothills, of course) and took an old favorite location and turned into a modern place that brings liquid goodness to the masses.

They started a little smaller and have grown to 12 taps of both “favorites” and rotating varieties. They started serving food after a year or so of being open and then expanded to a whole new joint that focused on burgers and fancy milkshakes. They pulled back on that and now have a “ramen” place in the former burger space that is open a few days of the week. But, they still have some burgers on the food menu and you can order from them via Uber Eats, DoorDash and other delivery services.

Tim has bought out Cliff and Ryan and has kept the beer going strong. Their brews are solid and being in the location is pretty cool, too. It’s easily accessible from the Marriott, Embassy Suites, the Benton Convention Center, and everywhere downtown.

Small Batch Beer is located at 241 W Fifth Street and is waiting to serve you a great “cold one” as well as wine and a full ABC selection.

Small Batch was the first presenting sponsor of The Beer Dads podcast. I appreciate them and their support. They are no longer that sponsor so everything I say about them is an honest and unsolicited recommendation. Give them a shot!

I hope you’ll visit my friends soon, not just Fridays, and help local businesses and local business owners and hey, you can get good beverages and delicious pies! Thanks for reading about my friends.

One of the best “waterin‘ holes” in WSNC is Bull’s Tavern. Danielle is a bad-arsed woman and she owns the only female-founded bar in downtown. Bull’s Tavern slings some fantastic bevies and have great drink specials and live music several times a week, usually Thursday through Saturday and the occasional Sunday.

The atmosphere in Bull’s Tavern is welcoming and comfortable. You get over 20 taps for brews and many of them are local- or NC-based. Mondays are half-price whiskey with Court, Tuesdays are half-off Tequila and Wednesdays are karaoke and $5 Titos. This weekend’s entertainment features a Very Hairy Christmas with Fruit Smoothie Trio tonight, Brothers Pearl tomorrow and Sunday is a very special Service Industry Christmas with ThreeFour Mountain. It’s all going to be fun and your drinks are guaranteed to be delicious. They’re located at 408 W Fourth Street and you should get on down there.

Full disclosure, Bull’s Tavern is the “Official Beer Sponsor” of The Less Desirables so I may get compensation from them, however, this is an honest and heartfelt (and was not asked to make it) recommendation.

Dana Moody of West End Coffeehouse with one of her pies! (©W-SJournal)

My “Unsolicited Recommendation” is West End Coffeehouse, which is owned by my friends, Jim and Dana (pronounced Dan-ah) Moody. They started by buying out Cafe Prada and they took over the coffee shop and gelato operation and contrary to the stories of the previous owners, Jim and Dana made the shop a place people wanted to be.

Now, they still do gelato, espresso and coffee, but the (somewhat) new thing for Dana – and she kicks butt at it – is making pies. She calls herself the Feisty Pie Lady! She bakes a lot of pie goodness and the flavors aren’t ordinary. And, it’s not all big, full-sized pies. They have mini pies, they have muffins, they have brownies. They have delicious treats, to eat in or take home!

Unfortunately, I didn’t write this in time for you to get a Christmas pie order, but New Year’s coming and people like sweets for those parties, right? Right. No reason not to go to West End Coffeehouse. They’re located at 390 N Broad St (which is right up the street from Bull’s Tavern).

I hope you’ll visit my friends soon, not just Fridays, and help local businesses and local business owners and hey, you can get good beverages and delicious pies! Thanks for reading about my friends.

Christmas, Christmas Parade, Downtown Winston-Salem, Life, Winston-Salem Jaycees, WSNC

Salutations™!!

This year, on December 7, to be exact,  the Winston-Salem Jaycees will be having their 29th Annual Downtown Holiday Parade. I’ve been in the parade, it was a good bit of fun. I rode in a convertible and nearly froze my tuchis off. That’s okay, though, the fun outweighed the chill. JayceeLOGO-fb

It goes throughout the main arteries in downtown WSNC and people flock to the streets! You can be part of the parade, too. The Jaycees are looking for entrants into the parade and want the city to know that it is rapidly approaching and the deadline for it is even closer, still. In fact, the deadline for entries is 1159p on Monday, November 18, 2019. This way they can start making the line-up and order for the parade.

Whether you’re walking, building a float, flying in your jetpack (okay, I made that part up), an important figure, a beauty queen, an animal group, or pretty much anything family-friendly, you can be in this parade. Go to wsparade.org/registration and do your registration thing. Yes, there is a cost but I’m telling you, there will be a shload of people there. It’s good exposure for you and it helps the Jaycees, who are a fantastic group of young folk.

And, hang around a little bit for the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership’s Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, too!

Remember, December 7, 2019. It starts at 5p and will be superdynawhoppin’!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

After a few too many years of being gone from WSNC, Ember Audio + Design is back and tonight was their first PVD night in the new space. PVD means Public Vinyl Demo and it’s basically a listening party.

60429247_10156391739601305_5498241042975031296_n

Ember Audio + Design

I never got to go to any of the ones they did when they were on Trade Street. I say didn’t get to go, but what I mean is, I just never got around to it. I didn’t know what to expect, really.

So, we just sat in on the listening party because we didn’t bring something to be played.  The cool thing about this listening party is that you get to hear your own or other people’s favorite or interesting musical finds on an audio system that chances are you are never going to own. That’s not a bad thing, high-end hi-fi systems are super expensive, sure, but man, there’s something about hearing vinyl (which already sounds better than other media) on a system that probably costs in the 10s of thousands of dollars (I’m guessing here). Deep booming lows. Crisp and clear highs. Lush and rich strings and choirs. It’s like a blanket covering you with aural comfort, warming the cockles of your heart.

But, the store isn’t only about high-end audio equipment. Ember Audio + Design’s Facebook page says they are also: “Modern Furniture and Accessory retailer, featuring work from local and national designers, and audio gear from all over the world. We seek brands that offer the highest performance for the value – companies that have their own design teams in-house, and more often than not, manufacture everything themselves.”

The BCPF and I had a great time listening to this PVD and are already contemplating what we are taking to the next PVD session at the new store.

To Chris and Jamie Livengood, you guys have a great new place and I’m so glad to be part of Industry Hill with you and I look forward to a lot of PVD sessions, too. You should check them out, Dear Reader!! Also, keep an ear out for when Jamie and Chris come on The Less Desirables to talk with us more about the store and give you more info about what Ember Audio + Design is all about!

Salutations™!!

So today was the big day. It was the DWSP Excellence Awards for 2018. All the recipients were pleased with their videos and since it’s now over and happened, I can say who won the awards. Bailey Power Plant, The Ramkat, Cobblestone Farmers’ Market, The Canteen Bistro & Market, Fiddlin’ Fish Beer Company and Claire Calvin. Claire kind of won three times. She won for herself and her restaurants, plus she co-owns Canteen and since her Alma Mexicana restaurant was the first one in Bailey Power Plant, then she was mentioned there, as well. Also, Kim Lawson is the GM of Canteen and her husband is Richard Emmett who co-owns the Ramkat. It was a lot of one degree of separation going on today.20190227_214217

There was a hiccup that wasn’t my doing and I will address that first thing tomorrow, but otherwise, it was a great day.

Plus, we recorded Fan Interference today where we interviewed former WFU and current Arizona Hotshots (of the AAF) QB John Wolford. It was a good interview. Hailey Brooke McFadden is getting a lot of good guests for us. It is awesome. She has some big news that really goes hand-in-hand with my big news that I still haven’t announced yet because I and the entity haven’t worked out the announcement, yet.

Tonight on The Less Desirables, we had Kristen Williams in to talk about K10 Yoga. She was a great guest. And, she got D and B on the floor doing yoga, that’s something.

Stay tuned to the DWSP YouTube channel (and you know I’ll forward it here) for those Excellence Awards vids. Listen to Fan Interference HERE. Listen to TLD HERE.

I did it! Well, almost, but you can’t any closer than this. But, I have one tiny edit to make on the vid projects with DWSP. I had the director of the organization approve them today and outside that one small edit that I need to take care of BAM! We are outta there!g1369638954952825892

I feel good about it but I’m tired. I am celebrating by not doing anything out of the way until Monday (when I do the edit), so, that means blogging, too.

Salutations™!!

So, I started and finished the first three of the videos today. These are the rough cuts that need approval from the DWSP and then I make whatever edits they need and produce them and deliver them. I have three more to go. 0c03a5e430e9f9b10288edb43036202f

I have my awesome Friday morning TBD Referal Group in the morning first thing, but as soon as that meeting is over, I am going to run over and start on the next three. I also have a few other things going on that I need to do during the day but hope to have these at least most of the way done.

I told The BCPF that I was going to try my dangedest to not impose on our weekend. So, that may mean a Sunday or whatever to finish but I am on a deadline, now so I’ll just be kicking butt!

That said, I’m worn out and am calling it a night!
