So, it seems that hard root beer is the new black (or at least deep caramel). About a month and a half ago, we had the Not Your Father’s Root Beer and now we’ll have this one. I love root beer and I loved the NYFRB, which was evident by the ten of them that I had this past weekend at the Texas Pete Culinary Arts Festival. I hear tell, at least from Spencer, that people say this is even better than NYFRB. Now, the caveat to NYFRB is it’s so danged sweet. When we had it on the show, even Eugene and Caitlin could only have two. I had three but determined that I shouldn’t have had that last one. Yes, again, I had ten this weekend. Four on Friday and six on Saturday. It was hot and they were refreshing. The point is, I’m wondering if this one will be as sweet? I’m hoping not, but hoping that it’s still very good.
Coney Island’s brewery is in Brooklyn, NY. It says on the carton that it is a collaboration with Boston Beer Company. That means it’s a bit of Sam Adams in it. Nothing wrong with that. According to their website: “Coney Island Hard Root Beer is a new twist on an old favorite. With hints of vanilla, licorice and birch, this root beer will bring you back to the boardwalk. Thrilling roller coaster rides and games on the pier. Sand under your feet and waves crashing on the shore. Cotton candy, french fries and popcorn galore. And don’t forget, the joy of an ice cold, frothy root beer on a warm summer day. The gypsy should have predicted this. The most dignified beverage of days past, re-imagined for your future self. The wooden planks under your feet and a hot dog in your hand; the only difference is that now you’re tall enough to ride the ride.”
BeerAdvocate has it rated at 81 (good) with 47 reviews. Untappd has it at 3.78 caps out of 10. I’m really looking forward to this since I liked NYFRB so much. Have you tried it yet? Then run down to 915 Burke Street and see Spencer at City Beverage. Tell him you want The Less Desirables Beer of the Week and get 5% off your own sixer! Tune in to this week’s episode of TLD and hear what Caitlin, Spirit Gum Theatre Company, Eugene and I think of it! Cheers!
