Salutations™!!

I just wanted to leave a quick (is that possible from me?) word about this town again. I know I went on a tear and ripped it a new one for traffic problems earlier this week. But, as I said on that post, I still love my city dearly and today, I saw more of why.

The collective response from businesses downtown personified. (Jim Moody by ©Jack Pennington)

There was some condescending post from someone in some official capacity that was directed at businesses downtown who are struggling that says that perhaps these business owners should take some class at the local community college to learn how to start a business or how to make their existing business better as if they don’t know how to operate a business, already. The idea was that the businesses downtown are just whining about the closure of Biz 40 and whatever.

Well, to that person who wrote that garbage, screw you, pal!

These businesses were thriving before the closure. And, I don’t blame the road closure. I blame scare tactics, whether on purpose or inadvertently from media and officials about how bad it is to be downtown now that Biz 40 is out of commission.

Granted the closure of multiple bridges all at the same time has cut a few arteries into town but you can still maneuver. Come from Peters Creek or go a little further east to Cherry or even 52 to get into town.

There are people who will complain just because they already hate the town about how bad the traffic is now that there are only a few arteries into town. Suck it up, furball, this is what progress looks like. That road was built at a time when we were just past covered wagons and it needs to accommodate 100,000 cars a week. It needed to be gone. If you already don’t want to come downtown, there’s nothing that we can tell you or do that would change your mind. We’re not looking to.

Who we are talking to is the people that have just been talked into being scared of being downtown. If you let that nonsense set in, you’re going to set this town back 15 years to what it was when no one wanted to come downtown. It will go back to being a “suburb without a city” that it was in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. You can get to it. Just give yourself 20 minutes more to get there. Be patient. We all have to go on those same roads and none of us want to traverse the traffic any more than you do, but we who love downtown for the friends (personal, interpersonal and figurative) we have grown to know. To us, it’s worth the hassle. It will be over soon.

There are plenty of downtown businesses that need your support. It’s not Biz 40s fault, it’s the naysayers. Don’t listen to them.

Tuesday I was at Finnigan’s Wake. Wednesday I was at Zesto Burgers. Yesterday, I visited Coffee Park (Arts), Zesto Burgers (no, it’s not downtown but it’s independently owned in town).  Today, I went to Footnote Coffee at Foothills, West End Coffeehouse, and Mr. Barbecue. What businesses did you support this week? The ones you did visit, they appreciate it and I appreciate it because when you support them, they’re there when I want/need to go there.

I know all of that is food/beverage related and The BCPF and I going to Xcaret tonight with friends downtown, but it’s not all about food places. Retail, services and other industry downtown need your support. They support each other but they need you.

The camaraderie between the “allies” and businesses downtown has made me smile and it’s uplifting in a somewhat troubling time.

If you’ve not been downtown WSNC (or close proximity to it) lately, take a bit of time to go explore. You may find that it’s not as difficult to traverse as you’ve thought/been told. Andy, you may find some really cool things you didn’t know was there. Tomorrow is Saturday, take a drive, shop, support, enjoy!

Second time this week that my soapbox has been out from under the bed. I apologize, or really sorry (not sorry). And, I know, too, that it was not quick. Sorry (not sorry) for that, too!

Until tomorrow, where I’ll hopefully see you out and about…
Scorp out!

Salutations™!!

You know, Dear Reader, I have clout. That’s a funny word, “clout.” Not Klout, the social media analytics tool that measures your social media importance. I mean real clout. According to one dictionary’s definition, clout is “influence or power, especially in politics or business.” how-to-shop-local-winston-salem

Now, I’m not bragging on that, that’s a heavy cross to bear, but I know people, people know me. I speak about things, I write a somewhat influential food blog/podcast. People tell me things so I can tell others. That has been built up from The Less Desirables to my time producing/co-hosting Sipping NC, my writings, and so on.

My point, again, is not to brag. My point is people entrust me with information with the intention of spreading it around. With this, I will admit that I get a lot of concessions. I get some “freebies.” I get invited to things because of this “clout.”

Many of the things that I “push” are things that are provided by sponsors of one of my podcasts. I understand that. You understand that. I make no bones about the “official sponsors” that I promote or advertise. Those things are posted about are things that are bartered, traded, gifted or whatever. But, they get that all the time and I will absolutely continue to do that, in abundance.

But, there are a lot of companies out there that are worthy of talking about, even beyond my sponsors or trade partners. These local businesses need to be noticed, need your support and need to be on your “must stop” list.

A Daisy a Day Florists, Airtype, Alma Mexicana, Bookmarks, Brookstown Inn, Camel City BBQ Factory, Mr. Barbecue, Sally Gupton Photography, West End Coffee House, Camino Bakery, Jeffrey Adams, Hutch & Harris, Fearless WS, Footnote, Camel Pawn Shop, Alkali Hair Studio, West End Cafe, Computer and Technology Services (CATS), Fortified Futures, Vibes Up Winston-Salem, River’s Edge, Seamless Living, Dr. Renea’s, Happie Food, Image360, Ink It Promotional Products, Train to Relex Yoga, The Breathing Room, The Porch, The Olio, The Tin Can, BeYou360, TimmyVO, Ed Dean with Cruise Planners, Solutions Afoot, SixFour Web Design, Stallone Frazier Photography, SunnySide Mercantile, Twin City Hive, Black Mountain Chocolate, Sunshine Beverage, Broad Branch Distillery, The Ramkat, Earl’s WS, Wise Man Brewing, Fiddlin’ Fish, Triad Speech Consultants, Crafted The Art of the Taco, Reboot, Dogwood Hops & Crops and The Trophy Room, Sweet Aromaz, The Flour Box, The Tavern at Old Salem, Cowboy Brazilian Steakhouse, Krankies, Fair Witness, a/perture cinema, Sweet Potatoes, Rec Billiards, Mozelle’s Southern Bistro, Campus Gas, ANY of the artists’ shops or galleries on Trade Street, Ronnie’s Country Store, Monstercade, Southside Beer Garden, Old Winston Social Club, Burke Street Pizza, Uncle Buzzy’s, Cin Cin’s, The Quiet Pint, May Way Dumplings, Penny Path Cafe, Cafe Arthurs, Stell Brew, The B-String, Hair Bomb, Coffee Park (all locations) and many, many more.

The point is, all of these businesses are locally owned (and/or operated) and deserve some love. Sure, I take pride in my sponsors and will do everything to promote them, not just because they’re my sponsors but because they have supported me. I’m not going to mention any of them in this post because, for this post, it’s completely unsolicited recommendations. Every one of these businesses is run by local folks who care about their customers and deserve your attention. Not one of these businesses asked me to say anything. I just think this is the weekend and Christmas is coming up. Gift certificates, stocking stuffers, trinkets, dinners, lunches, beers, spirits. Each one of them can help you fulfill your needs and you’ll help keep them in business. I don’t usually say please, but please show them some love and support. They deserve it.

Until tomorrow, when you may see me in a few of these businesses…

Salutations™!!

A few months back, a few of my great aunts came to visit for a mini family reunion and we all got to talking about our family history and genetics. I knew that the actual origins of my four surnames (each of my grandparents surnames or maiden names) were all British Isles. Two of the four are English, one is Scottish and one is Irish. The Scottish one is the one associated with the family tartan that I wore in Scotland for my wedding. But, those are just names and truly, there could have been adoptions, theft, slave trade, illegitimacy, many things that led to us having the names we do. I know for some branches of my family there were questions about if we really are who we say we are generations later. This just got me extra curious. I have an aunt (Ma Père’s sister) that is the family historian. She takes care of a lot of that but there were questions unanswered.

Then, there was this thing called Melungeon. According to Wikipedia: “Melungeon is a term traditionally applied to one of numerous “tri-racial isolate” groups of the Southeastern United States. Historically, Melungeons were associated with the Cumberland Gap area of central Appalachia, which includes portions of East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, and eastern Kentucky. Tri-racial describes populations thought to be of mixed European, African and Native American ancestry. Although there is no consensus on how many such groups exist, estimates range as high as 200. Melungeons were often referred to by other settlers as of Portuguese or Native American origin.” If you don’t know by now, I’m from West Virginia. My family’s roots can be traced to NC somewhere but we were from WV. That’s probably around the time of WV still being part of VA so there is/was a chance that I could have been part of this. However, it would have been relatively recent, I’d think (within the last 250 years or so). So, whether or not I was any part of that, I also wanted to know.

I was told about this company, 23andMe, by Tommy Priest, purveyor of fine coffees and owner of Coffee Park, Coffee Park ARTS and Krankie’s Airstream. 23andMe provides a service: linking you to your genetic data. So, I decided to do it. I paid my money, they sent the kit, I spit in the tube, shook it up and sent it off. Wait 4-6 weeks and bam! We have info. So, you may ask yourself, Dear Reader, who am I? What makes me who I am? Well, I’m going to tell you.

Ok, so this is how I’m broken down: I’m 99% European (not really surprised since I’ve explained my grand-parental surnames), .7% Sub-Saharan African, .1% Native American, .1% South Asian and .1% unassigned. But, I’m going to go even deeper.

Of the European, I’m 52.6% British and Irish (again, bingo!), 9.4% French/German (my last name is Norman/English, so the French makes sense), 3.5% Scandinavian, .4% Finnish and 31.1% Broadly Northern European (this means that there are several countries that show patterns of this DNA’s movement and mutation so instead of arbitrarily picking one and perhaps being incorrect, they call it “broadly” for categorizing purposes). But, wait, there’s more! I’m also .6% Iberian (Spanish/Portuguese) and .1% Broadly Southern European.  Also, I’m 1.4% Broadly European.

Of the Sub-Saharan African (.7%), I am .5% West African and .2% Central and South African. I’m also less than .1% Broadly Sub-Saharan African. The Native American kind of befuddles me because Ma Mère’s side definitely has some in the line so to only come up .1% is confusing. And the South Asian (.1%) thing? I have no idea.

So, adding all this up, the .6% Iberian, and the .7% Sub-Saharan African could mean that I’m possibly Melungeon but I’d think with the relatively short time ago this could have happened, just prior to 1900 the best I can tell, that it’s not highly likely. However, as Shirley Price wrote in the Kingsport Times-News in 1968: “Most modern-day descendants of Appalachian families traditionally regarded as Melungeon are generally European American in appearance, often (though not always) with dark hair and eyes, and a swarthy or olive complexion.” That does somewhat fit me, although I’m not “dark skinned,” I do have an olive complexion and can get fairly dark when in the sun. I guess the jury is still out on that part. I, however, don’t think that I fit in the Melungeon category.

1aaaTimCaveCompare

You decide…?

Here’s the funny part, or unfortunate part, you choose which… of all the 23andMe European users the average percentage of Neanderthal is 2.7%. I came in at 2.9%. That means that 2.9% of my genetic make up is Neanderthal. I’m 84th percentile. That’s pretty up there, I guess. The BCPF now lovingly calls me her “knuckle dragger.” If anyone calls me “Caveman,” from now on, I can say, “why, yes! Yes, I am!”

I hope you enjoyed finding this out about me. If not, sorry-not-sorry. I find my genetics quite fascinating and will continue to find out more about my history and I’ll probably continue to write about it. Have you had your genetic makeup measured? How did it turn out? Was it what you thought it was? Were you surprised? Let me know, I’ve become very interested in this subject. Thanks for reading.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

The Less Desirables and Tart & Tangy Triad both have a new advertiser! Yep, we got more people to promote and we are quite happy to announce that Mr. Tommy Priest, owner of Krankie’s Airstream, Coffee Park and Coffee Park Downtown have signed on.

Krankie’s Airstream and Coffee Park (I) are located at 1208 & 1206, repsectively, Reynolda Road and Coffee Park Downtown is located Winston-Salem at 251 N. Spruce Street. Go down to the Airstream and get your java. You can drive through or stop, get the drink from the trailer and sit in the Coffee Park which is the lounge for the Airstream.  On Wednesdays, they have food trucks and they’re known to have fresh produce for sale from, and to support, the Children’s Home (which is right across the street). This place is a favorite of The BCPF and me.

The new Coffee Park Downtown is inside the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts complex. They have the same perks as the Airstream and also an outdoor seating area for the warmer months, and hey… you’re downtown.  That’s a plus. They serve sandwiches and munchies from West End Cafe and pastries from Atelier on Trade.  Have something made with IZZE, that’s always a tart little treat.  Wondermous, I say.

Listen to The Less Desirables (recorded every Wednesday) and Tart & Tangy Triad (recorded on Tuesdays) and watch the Tart & Tangy Triad Appetizer video (Fridays) to hear what Tommy has to say about his establishments! He’s a swell dude and his businesses are top-notch!  Drink up and bring me one (mine has to be decaf, though)!!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

The Less Desirables Network

Let’s go back to The Less Desirables Podcast Network for round two of “Getting to Know the Scorp!”

So the second show that came about was a concept that a buddy of mine, Chad Nance, and I thought would be a good idea.  We still think it’s a good idea, we just haven’t tweaked it to the point of perfection, yet.  Is that a bad thing?  No, I don’t think so.  We’ve played around with some formats and some additions; even the addition of another person.

CCD1

Camel City Dispatch

“SO WHAT IS IT!?!” I hear you screaming at my ADD arse.  This, ladies and germs, is the Camel City Dispatch Show.  It’s based on the concept of Camel City Dispatch, Winston-Salem’s only (and one of only 4-5 national) online news daily.  They cover Winston-Salem only.  There may be a little bit of Lewisville, or Kernersville, or Clemmons, but the emphasis is on Winston-Salem, or as it’s colloquially called, Camel City.  This fine news establishment is run by Chad and his significant other, Carissa. It’s a bona fide news outlet, too.  You’ll get honest reporting and not fluffed or stuffed baloney you get from other outlets.

We wanted a “news-type” show that focused on the happenings in Camel City.   Camel City Dispatch and The Less Desirables have had a great working relationship since 2012 and I thought this would be a great addition to what I wanted to be “The Less Desirables Network.”

When we started, in January 2013, it was mostly politics and community affairs.  We would highlight a musical theme every week: usually based around a band/artist, sometimes songs that relate to a topic, etc.  We also play classic commercials because we think they’re a) fun to listen to, b) a break in the action, c) good marketing strategy.  We can’t give away all our secrets.  At first Chad handled all that.  Then I, as in fitting my role of “producer,” took it on.  I choose themes that go with anniversaries (like the death of Sam Cooke, or when Outfield guitarist, John Spinks, passed) or just a mood that I’m in.  The commercials can be about classic cars to cereals to household or grooming products to film trailers.  Those just get chosen at random by yours truly.

1379434_747893775227270_1575713968_n

Coffee Park WSNC

Over the last 6 months, we’ve changed our format as we see numbers better when we talk less politics in general but only touch on them or give opinions about them.  PLUS, we’ve added the wellness guru, Tommy Priest, who also owns Krankie’s Airstream and Coffee Park, as he’s always enlightening, entertaining and always good for a good rant.  The format of the show also tends to lean more towards Chad’s “Third Shift” section of the Camel City Dispatch site.  That’s the editorial section where he basically goes off on tangents and expresses his personal feelings instead of straight news reporting.  It’s always good fun.

08c6c-tld

The Less Desirables

We record the show (most) every Wednesday at the TLD Studios and it’s generally available around 4:30pm.  You can find a link on The Less Desirables Network page on TLD and Tart & Tangy Triad   ‘s websites (more on T&TT later).  You can also find a link on the Camel City Dispatch site.

There you have part TWO of the Network deets.  Tune back in through the next few weeks to find out more about the other shows, Fan Interference and Tart & Tangy Triad.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
