Salutations™!!

In the last few months, we’ve had Dale Cole, Dale Cole and the Virtual Village and Jukebox Rehab on The Less Desirables. Part of the VV is Chad Nance. Chad filmed a video at Bull’s Tavern of Jukebox Rehab’s song “Empty Bar” and our very own Danielle Bull made her acting debut. It’s a cool tune. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

Remember when you used to do the #FF on Twitter just a few years back? It stood forbulls-1 Follow Friday or Friend Friday (according to who you asked) and as far as I can tell, no one really does that any longer and whilst I’ll admit I was slack on that on Twitter, I will also say that Twitter isn’t my main social media platform and I just didn’t do it. But, I think it was a good idea and I’d like to pick that back up, except do it here on this blog.

I have a slew of friends that are interesting folks. They may have businesses, they may be musicians, they may just be eclectic as heck, whatever! I just think they need to be highlighted more because they bring awesomeness to the world and we’re lucky to have them here in WSNC.

—

One of the best “waterin‘ holes” in WSNC is Bull’s Tavern. Danielle is a bad-arsed woman and she owns the only female-founded bar in downtown. Bull’s Tavern slings some fantastic bevies and have great drink specials and live music several times a week, usually Thursday through Saturday and the occasional Sunday.

The atmosphere in Bull’s Tavern is welcoming and comfortable. You get over 20 taps for brews and many of them are local- or NC-based. Mondays are half-price whiskey with Court, Tuesdays are half-off Tequila and Wednesdays are karaoke and $5 Titos. This weekend’s entertainment features a Very Hairy Christmas with Fruit Smoothie Trio tonight, Brothers Pearl tomorrow and Sunday is a very special Service Industry Christmas with ThreeFour Mountain. It’s all going to be fun and your drinks are guaranteed to be delicious. They’re located at 408 W Fourth Street and you should get on down there.

Full disclosure, Bull’s Tavern is the “Official Beer Sponsor” of The Less Desirables so I may get compensation from them, however, this is an honest and heartfelt (and was not asked to make it) recommendation.

Dana Moody of West End Coffeehouse with one of her pies! (©W-SJournal)

My “Unsolicited Recommendation” is West End Coffeehouse, which is owned by my friends, Jim and Dana (pronounced Dan-ah) Moody. They started by buying out Cafe Prada and they took over the coffee shop and gelato operation and contrary to the stories of the previous owners, Jim and Dana made the shop a place people wanted to be.

Now, they still do gelato, espresso and coffee, but the (somewhat) new thing for Dana – and she kicks butt at it – is making pies. She calls herself the Feisty Pie Lady! She bakes a lot of pie goodness and the flavors aren’t ordinary. And, it’s not all big, full-sized pies. They have mini pies, they have muffins, they have brownies. They have delicious treats, to eat in or take home!

Unfortunately, I didn’t write this in time for you to get a Christmas pie order, but New Year’s coming and people like sweets for those parties, right? Right. No reason not to go to West End Coffeehouse. They’re located at 390 N Broad St (which is right up the street from Bull’s Tavern).

I hope you’ll visit my friends soon, not just Fridays, and help local businesses and local business owners and hey, you can get good beverages and delicious pies! Thanks for reading about my friends.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

In my infinite wisdom (or lack thereof), I forgot to schedule a guest on tonight’s The Less Desirables. So we had a roundtable discussion and Danielle talked about going to The Big What Festival this past weekend. She talked about the fun she had, the people she met, the bands that she saw and the bands that were coming to Bull’s Tavern. 20190814_194006-01

Bethany talked about her daughter moving to Hawaii, new cigars and such.

And I talked about how I will be doing some work with Liz Hronek, aka Miss Fit Boss. I told you last Wednesday of the connection I felt with her about my weight problem. We talked about how to at least try to combat that over the weekend and into this week. Liz is teaching me to believe that I can get to a reasonable goal of under 300lbs and then work on other goals of less weight from that point. But, anyway, she’s awesome to work with. I just wanted to say that again.

You can listen to our episode HERE.

Salutations™!!

Tonight on The Less Desirables, Danielle was unable to come because she had driven someone back to NOLA and was flying back. So, in her stead, she sent her right-hand gal, Rockie who brought us beer and played along with us. It was a good show. Rockie did a great job with Bethany and me. 20190529_194145-01

We talked about her, about Bull’s Tavern, music, a lot of things. You can listen HERE.

Salutations™!!

We didn’t have a full episode of The Less Desirables today as I took time to wish Danielle’s “Papa” a fond farewell. He passed away from kidney failure yesterday, but he suffers no more. I know it is hard on Danielle and her mother, but I know, too, that they’ve had to suffer along with him. So, there must be a little relief in there. But, no matter how much you’re prepared for the loss of a loved one, I figure it is never easy to accept it when it happens. I hurt for them. Darrell was a great dude. Happier thoughts and posi-vibes to the Bull family.

Papa Bull and Susie!

On a more chipper note, Hailey Brooke McFadden, co-host of Fan Interference, graduated this weekend from Wake Forest University, so many congrats to her on that accomplishment. She’ll return to Fan Interference in a few weeks, we hope.

Have an enjoyable journey, Papa and your journey is just now starting, Hailey.

Salutations™!!

I told you last week that I was on a podcast that wasn’t mine called The Pop-Up Podcast. That show dropped early yesterday but Mondays are one of my busiest days and I had to work. But, today, I am dropping the ep right here.

Promise Mangum is the host and does a good job. We talk about Podcasting (duh!), WSNC, food, internet radio and more. I was able to get all the podcast names in and the entire roster of TLD sponsors. Woot!

Look for Promise to be on The Less Desirables on February 20. Here, Dear Reader, I present you with the “Pop-Up Podcast.”

Salutations™!!

Today I did something that I’ve never done before. I had my son, 3B on The Less Desirables. For almost nine years I’ve been doing this show and he’s never been on it. He has been on The Beer Dads for a couple of shows, but never TLD. It was a “year-end/post-Christmas” show and relatively short, but it was still cool. We talked about Christmas, his culinary aspirations, cooking, food, his musical tastes and more. It was just cool having him there for it and talking.  You can hear that episode HERE.20181226_150340.jpg

I also wanted to take a minute to thank all the TLD Network sponsors for a great 2018. Special, very special thanks to Underdog Records, Bull’s Tavern, Finnigan’s Wake, King’s Crab Shack & Oyster Bar, Willow’s Bistro, X1 Communications, Machine Gun Graphics, SOS Investor LLC, Washington Perk & Provision Company, Industry Hill, Dilisio’s Italian Restaurant, The Humblebee Shoppe, Hoot’s Roller Bar & Beer Company, Satornino Group, Old Winston Social Club, and hopefully a few more coming soon. 2018 was awesome. 2019 is going to be even more kick-arse!

Thank you all for listening, too. And, for reading this blog.

Salutations™!!

Since I was out of “the office” on Monday and Tuesday, I had to make up some serious ground yesterday and today. I was in the studio from 10:30a until 9p yesterday and from 10:45a until 6:30p today. None of it was doing anything other than busting my arse editing four podcasts, prepping for The Less Desirables/Apartment 5B combo podcast (including the Underdog Records and Bull’s Tavern commercials and Apartment 5B’s “Today in Music” spot) and Phoenix Rising’s “Rule 1 Podcast.” SNSMedia

I stared at my computer screen — and the many, many, many waveforms and edits in ProTools that went with the podcast edits — so long that my eyes still haven’t uncrossed. But, I really love my job and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Actually, I want even more. If I had a full week to do edits, I could edit/produce about four external podcasts, eight in-house podcasts and still be able to have meetings and networking. That would be a full week and I would love to do that. So, I’m working on doing that. I have most of that filled, I just need to fill the last few pieces.

But, whilst I was so busy over the last two days, I hadn’t had time to realize that no one, not one person said anything about my KISS rankings. I figured I would catch some heck for Dressed to Kill‘s low ball number, my least-liking of Ace’s solo album and Music from ‘The Elder’ being my top album. Only one person “liked” either post on Facebook and nothing else. I don’t get it. I guess I’m having no readers on the posts? *knockknockknock* is this thing on!? I don’t know.

Anywhat, if you have any comments on both of those posts, I’d hear them. Otherwise, I’ll just keep on posting and keep on editing. Oh well. Have a good night.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Bull’s Tavern, the Official Beer Sponsor of The Less Desirables, presents Citra Gose from Hi-Wire Brewing Company, The Less Desirables Beer of the Week.citra-gose_mockup-402x1030

Goses have quickly become one of my favorite styles of beer. I love sour and I love salty and Goses are both at once. When Danielle brings in a Gose beer, I get excited. For one, it’s a Gose but also, I know that Danielle is my Beer Hero so she’s going to do us right! She did us right.

I really dig what Hi-Wire does. They’re located in NC’s Beer Capitol, Asheville. They do stuff to take care of the environment and they make great beer. This is one such beer. It’s salty and tangy and has a great floral and citrus aromatic essence about it. It’s light in body, light in heft (it’s only 4.2% ABV) but heavy on the flavor. Danielle said that if you like margaritas, you should try using this in lieu of a sour mix. I want to try that!

BeerAdvocate rates this beer 3.73/5 (Good) which I think is selling it short. Untappd has it at 3.67 caps out of 5, also selling it short. I rate it at 4.5 as it’s danged delicious. Have you had it? What did you think? If you’ve not had it or just have a hankering for more, head to Bull’s Tavern and try a pint of it.

Listen to this week’s podcast episode to hear what we all think about it. You can do that HERE.

Bull’s Tavern, the Official Beer Sponsor of The Less Desirables, presents Golden Boy Blonde Ale from Triple C Brewing, The Less Desirables Beer of the Week.

We had this beer on TLD back in January of 2015. That’s over three years ago. And in January at that. Why would we have this light summery brew in January? That was what Danielle asked anyway. I have said before that I don’t allow seasons to dictate my eating or drinking habits. That being said, if it is cold outside and I’m outside, I want heartier brews. But, it was air-conditioned in the Test Pattern Studios tonight even though the outside was in the high 80s.

When we had it in 2015, that was with Brian and Eugene, at least Eugene, possibly Caitlin. We had it in cans. This was in a growler from Bull’s Tavern and Danielle explained that they had cleaned the lines, fully, before tapping this brew. When we had it, the taste of this blonde ale was so crisp, so clean, and so darned good. There was a great blonde/hay flavor that had a bit of a bite. It had a grapefruity finish but not in that weird IPA hoppy way.

When we had it the first time it was rated only 3 caps out of 5. This time, however, I rated it 4.75. It was that good! And, it’s only 4.5% ABV so you can have several without being bogged down or getting sloshed.

BeerAdvocate has it at 3.56/5 (Good). Untappd has it at 3.46 caps out of 5. Have you had this brew? What did you think? If you haven’t had it or just have a hankering for more, then you need to head over to Bull’s Tavern and grab a pint. You should also listen to this week’s podcast and hear what Danielle, Bethany and I had to say about it. You can do that by listening HERE. We also recorded our last episode in Test Pattern Studios. I’ll talk more about that on Friday.
