Salutations™!!

The BCPF and I did a lot of nothing yesterday. Records, lunch at The Porch, record listening, dinner at A Slice of Napoli. The big news is we have a new President-Elect. Here’s the haul:

©Def American

Danzig – Soul On Fire: Live At The Hollywood Palace, 1989 FM Broadcast — My Kousins talk a lot about Danzig, but I have a limited knowledge of them. This is an import. 2×LP, Limited Edition, Unofficial Release. Limited to 500 copies. New.

Danzig – Danzig III: How The Gods Kill — What I said in the entry above…? This is the first half of the two things I know about this band. The song “Dirty Black Summer” is something I know. A band I joined in 1992 did this song. It’s simple and sounds like a decent Doors cover. But, it’s on here. So, yay. New.

Joy Division – Live At The Paradiso Club Amsterdam, January 11, 1980 — Limited Edition, Unofficial Release. Manufactured in the EU. Limited to 500 copies. The BCPF is a fan of Joy Division but she says they were pretty horrible live. She turned down picking this up. I didn’t. Let’s see how horrible it can be. New.

Van Halen – Women And Children First Sessions — Unofficial Release, Red. A lot of demos and instrumentals and things from VH’s third album. New.

Bon Iver – Bon Iver, Bon Iver — The BCPF has been putting off getting this album. When she did go to get it, Jonathan was sold out. It was there yesterday, so she picked it up. It’s good ethereal music but I can’t understand a single thing he’s saying. I can almost understand Sigor Rós more than him. With them, I have an excuse. They’re Icelandic. Bon Iver, more specifically, Justin Vernon is American; from Wisconsin. New.

Ralph Vaughan Williams – Sir Adrian Boult – Fantasia On ‘Greensleeves’ / English Folk Song Suite / Fantasia On A Theme By Thomas Tallis — I have no clue what this is. The BCPF put it in the crate. VG+.

We had fun and it seemed like there was a weight lifted from our shoulders. I’m not going to get into politics but the election went our way. Jonathan had a slew of new imports come in and I picked up a few. If you’re into oddball, weird things, check those out. The store is open Thursday-Saturday 11a-7p. He does store-to-porch deliveries Monday-Wednesday. You can purchase via the website 24/7. Use Discogs to track your collection.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
Scorp out!

Salutations™!!

Dear sweet baby [enter deity here], please let this be over soon. If for no other reason, I want to get back to Underdog Records, see Jonathan and buy vinyl goodness. Amen.

You know my religion is “non-Prophet” so that was really just symbolic. However, the sentiment is exact and true. I want to get back to Underdog. The good news is Jonathan is doing a lot of deliveries and is still getting in new stock. I don’t buy a lot of new stuff so that throws me behind. I am more about the used stuff and, well, I figured it’s just not as feasible for him to rifle through the used stuff. That’s okay. I have plenty to keep me company here, but there’s nothing like the thrill of bin diving. I love it. Anywhat!

This week, I was home more than usual (usual for the lockdown) and The BCPF had work and conferences via Zoom, so I was under headphones a lot this week. I listened to 23 albums. I should probably try to listen to some podcasts during this downtime but I really want to listen to music. I suppose this is the equivalent of being a chef and having to cook at home, or being a truck driver and having to drive the family to Florida for vacation or per my old job working with the family sand business, why would I go to the beach when I can see sand anytime I want? So, I’m just not in the mood to listen to podcasts on my “downtime.” That’s cleared up.

The criteria for my streaming listening (for this list, anyway) is this: I have to own it on vinyl. I can’t listen to it on vinyl because of the situation, but I want to act like I am. So, I use the Discogs shuffle feature and see what pops up. Oddly enough, on the same day, I had two from The Who and even odder, I had two Yes albums right in a row; one I wish I had drawn after the other started. That worked out for me. Here’s my headphone “haul:”

  • Randy Newman – Good Old Boys
  • Joe Cocker – Joe Cocker!
  • Jerry Goldsmith – Logan’s Run (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
  • AC/DC – Let There Be Rock
  • Tom Jones – Tom
  • The Doors – The Doors
  • Quiet Riot – Condition Critical
  • The Who – Who Are You
  • The Who – Who’s Next
  • Men At Work – Cargo
  • Iggy Pop – TV Eye 1977 Live
  • The Police – Reggatta de Blanc
  • a-ha – Hunting High And Low
  • Yes – Close To The Edge
  • Yes – Fragile
  • Gerry Rafferty – Night Owl
  • Eagles – Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975
  • Depeche Mode – Songs Of Faith And Devotion
  • Rickie Lee Jones – Pirates
  • Firefall – Élan
  • Jethro Tull – M.U. – The Best Of Jethro Tull
  • Genesis – Abacab
  • Joe Jackson – I’m The Man

That was a good listen haul, I think. I enjoyed most of it a lot. I didn’t have that I didn’t like, I just would have preferred something else, I guess.

Then yesterday, The BCPF and I had our listening time and we shuffled through these albums:

  • Stephen Stills – Stephen Stills 2
  • Charles Aznavour – Aznavour!
  • Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago
  • Midnight Oil – Diesel And Dust
  • Cranes – Self-Non-Self
  • Al Green – Let’s Stay Together
  • Love And Rockets – Express
  • Elton John – Tumbleweed Connection

That’s what we listened to. Follow Underdog Records on Facebook and Instagram, you’ll see what he’s got going on and you can get into the delivery thing and have him bring you some records. Also, visit the website to order new vinyl. Obviously, I use Discogs and even more so this week. There are no TLD/UR specials right now but I still hope you listen to the episodes. Okay, that’s all I have. Have a great week, stay home if you can, wash your damn hands and stay safe!

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Salutations™!!

Let me start by saying I had a great time singing with the Vagabond Saints Society last night. I would have liked to have had one more song, but it was fun hanging with my buddies.

The BCPF and I had a mostly regular day, outside of leaving home early to a) get a parking space and b) go eat at Crafted before the VSS show. We, of course, got to get by and say hey to Jonathan and walk out with some good records. Here’s the haul:

  • The Black Crowes – Shake Your Money Maker — I have never been a fan of the Black Crowes and when this album came out, I hated it. I think because I was forced to play “Jealous Again” in a band and I didn’t like playing it. Actually, as I’ve gotten older, I really like this album including “Jealous.” But, I still hate “Hard to Handle” with a passion, no matter who’s doing it. I just really hate it. But, other than that, the entire album is a gem. My favorite song on the album starts it off, “Twice as Hard.” New.
  • Bon Iver – i,i — The BCPF loves Justin Vernon, aka Bon Iver. I liked this album but really, I couldn’t figure out what his point was. It was a lot of samples, backward recordings, and electronic fills. Again, I like that, but, it wasn’t really what Bon Iver has been about. I’m okay with it, just… “?” New.
  • Iggy Pop – The Idiot — This is a 4 Men With Beards reissue of Iggy’s 1977 debut solo album and it was produced by David Bowie. It’s a bit different from Iggy’s work with the Stooges and in retrospect, Bowie felt bad that he pretty much had grown fatigued in what he had been doing and wanted to get behind someone else’s work. It turned out that it’s basically a Bowie-style album with Jim Osterberg (Iggy’s real name) singing. Iggy’s version of “China Girl” is pretty good. I liked this album. NM.
  • Journey – In The Beginning – 1975-1977 — I’ve talked many times about how I’m not a fan of pre-Steve Perry Journey. I’m not a huge fan of Gregg Rolie and am a fan of “hits.” That being said, this 2xLP collection of tunes from the first three Journey albums is pretty fantastic. They were more proggy than pop-rock at this time. But, I can’t say anything bad about any of it. I really enjoyed listening. VG+.
  • Gospel Music – How To Get To Heaven From Jacksonville, FL — I know nothing about this band/artist. What I do know is that they/he is on Kill Rock Stars, the label that is best known for their commitment to underground punk and alt-rock in Portland, Oregon and Olympia, Washington. We haven’t listened to it, yet, but we will. Probably today. EX/VG++
  • Marvin Gaye – Marvin Gaye’s Greatest Hits — It seems this is from Turkey but is on the Tamla label.  It is from 1977 and spans a good bit of his career. VG.
  • Nat King Cole – Nat King Cole Sings His Songs From Cat Ballou And Other Motion Pictures — It was an album from Nat King Cole that we didn’t have and hey it was in the $1 bin. But, it’s in great condition. VG+.
  • Ouro Negro and Berta Cardoso – A Visit To Portugal — Portugal is a target of a possible trip to Europe next year with The Beer Dads family. We also love collecting music from other countries so double bonus! Triple bonus is that this was in the $1 bin. Quadruple bonus is that it’s also in VG+.

Jonathan has a bit of used equipment that he’s collecting. Not really collecting but he’s prepping for sale. So if you or someone you know is in the market for a new (to them) turntable, receiver or heck, even an 8-track changer (yeah, that exists), then go by 835 Burke Street and check these things out! Tell him that The Less Desirables sent you! Speaking of, listen to each episode of The Less Desirables to hear what the TLD/UR special of the week is! And, use Discogs to track your collection, no matter what the media format. If you do, share it with me. Contact me for the hookup!

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Salutations™!!

Underdog Records had some good stuff this week and The BCPF and I rocked it, at least I think we think we did. Right, dear? Well, you decide. Here it is:

  • Kiss – (Music From) The Elder (as I mentioned on Monday, I received this last Sunday after I posted the Haul list, read my post from Monday to find more, new)
  • The Rolling Stones – Some Girls (my favorite Stones album, new)
  • Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago (new)
  • Bon Iver – 22, A Million (new)
  • Ryan Adams – Gold (a few years back, The BCPF and I were at a Mediocre Bad Guys show and they played a tune from this album. The BCPF had never been asked to dance, we slow-danced. I couldn’t not get it)
  • Neil Diamond – The Jazz Singer (Original Songs From The Motion Picture)
  • Seth Avett & Jessica Lea Mayfield – Sing Elliott Smith  (Elliott Smith is one of The BCPF’s favorite artists)
  • Journey – Escape
  • Kraftwerk – Musique Non Stop (12″ single)
  • Madonna – Madonna
  • Shirley Bassey – Never Never Never
  • Judy Collins – Whales And Nightingales
  • Joan Baez – Blessed Are…
  • Kansas  – Two For The Show
  • Billy Joel – Glass Houses
  • Nat King Cole With The First Church Of Deliverance Choir – Every Time I Feel The Spirit
  • Leonard Bernstein – West Side Story (Original Sound Track Recording)
  • Ralph Burns – Cabaret / Original Sound Track Recording
  • George Hamilton IV – Abilene (WSNC native, I should have at least one by him, right? $1)
  • The Philadelphia Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy / Tchaikovsky, Borodin, Mussorgsky – 1812 Overture
  • Bee Gees – Children Of The World
  • Iron Butterfly – In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (cover is in really great shape, the LP, however, is rough, $1)
  • The Kingston Trio – Sold Out
  • Barrel Fingers Barry – Beer Garden Piano (weirdness that I wanted, $1)
  • Gossec, Saint-Georges, Schobert – Petit Trianon: A Concert For Queen Marie-Antoinette
  • Maurice Jarre With The London Philharmonic Orchestra – Original Soundtrack Recording: Lawrence Of Arabia (I loved the film and the soundtrack was amazing, so, yes…)
  • Ben Folds Five – Whatever And Ever Amen (another WSNC native that I have grown to really, really love listening to)

And, with the $1 records, the Underdog Records/The Less Desirables involved the extensive section of $1 if you mention you heard the ad on the podcast. That’s why you should listen to TLD every week and hear the special. I’ll not give that away, you’ll have to listen to hear what it was and what to do! Also, if you’re looking to get into vinyl, Underdog has a good bit of used, quality turntables to get you started, a plethora of selections to listen to on your new turntable and accessories to keep it in tip top shape. The list above is brought to you by Discogs, which you should use to archive your collection!

Until tomorrow, happy listening…
Scorp out!
