Salutations™!!

Another Saturday passes that we didn’t get to darken the door of Underdog Records. That doesn’t mean Underdog isn’t busy. Heck no! Jonathan is running himself ragged to make deliveries and has extended the reach to Greensboro, High Point and other places. So, definitely watch the Underdog Records Facebook and Instagram and watch what he’s releasing. Purchasing is first-come-first-serve so be on the lookout. Also, you can purchase new vinyl anytime day or night on the website. If you’re outside of the delivery area or just don’t want Jonathan to drop stuff off at your door, then he offers “unlimited” LPs (I’m sure it’s a little limited) for a flat rate $4.

This week’s “listens” were abundant. 22 albums I got through from Monday-Friday.

And, per usual, this week’s streaming listens comes from Discogs’ shuffle feature and it has to be an album that I own on vinyl (outside of peripheral things like Beeswax Vinyl & More listens), that way it’s like listening to my vinyl but with headphones from my computer whilst The BCPF works 10 feet away. Here’s the list (this is in order of listens):

collage152420

  • Huey Lewis & The News – Small World
  • Siouxsie & The Banshees – Tinderbox
  • Angel – On Earth As It Is In Heaven
  • Rush – Hold Your Fire
  • Adam And The Ants – Kings Of The Wild Frontier
  • Phil Collins – No Jacket Required
  • Jim Steinman – Bad For Good
  • Radiohead – Kid A
  • Herb Alpert And The Tijuana Brass – !!Going Places!!
  • Heart – Dreamboat Annie
  • The Rolling Stones – Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out
  • The Mama’s And The Papa’s – If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears
  • Barbra Streisand – The Broadway Album
  • Megadeth – Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?
  • Accept – Balls To The Wall
  • 10cc – Bloody Tourists
  • Billy Idol – Billy Idol
  • ABC – How To Be A Zillionaire!
  • The Outlaws – Outlaws
  • Run-D.M.C. – Run-D.M.C.
  • Billy Joel – The Stranger
  • Blue Öyster Cult – Mirrors

collage252420

Whew! A long listening list indeed! It was spread out, too. The BCPF remarked how I went from Streisand to Megadeth. It worked. I love Streisand and I’m not afraid to admit that. But, I was ready for something heavy after having gone through The Mamas and the Papas and Streisand back to back. It worked, as I said.

collage452420

Well, yesterday, here’s what The BCPF and I listened to, actually on vinyl:

  • Timbuk 3 – Eden Alley
  • The Cars – Shake It Up
  • Kiss – Dynasty (its 41st anniversary yesterday)
  • Bauhaus – Burning From The Inside
  • Berlin – Pleasure Victim
  • Squirrel Nut Zippers – Hot
  • Boston – Don’t Look Back
  • The Clientele – Suburban Light
  • Patti Smith – Horses

All-in-all, it was a great listening week. I just hope to get into Underdog Records soon to rummage through the used vinyl.

Again, check out Underdog Records’ social and web stuffs. Buy records. Use Discogs to keep track of your collection and use it’s groovy (see what I did there) shuffle feature.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Salutations™!!

So, whilst doing the social media for The Less Desirables, and on the recommendation of Superfan Damien, I decided to watch Heavy Metal 2000. He was right to a point, The storyline is more linear and makes a little more sense, but it’s really just one story and not pieces. It’s not about the Loc Nar as the first one was. I mean, the Loc Nar is insinuated but, it’s not the focus.

Another thing that’s missing is the cool soundtrack. Yeah, there are songs and yeah, they’re more actual “metal,” but it’s just not got the same feel. Instead of Cheap Trick, Journey, Grand Funk, BOC, Black Sabbath, Sammy Hagar, Devo and Stevie Nicks, we get less memorable songs from Pantera, System of a Down, Voivod, Monster Magnet, Bauhaus, Queens of the Stone Age and Billy Idol, who actually lends his voice to Odin, the guardian of the ancient fountain that gives the bad guy his powers and such. The fountain guardians aren’t the bad guys, by the way. But, is Odin one of them, really? Hmmm… I’m not getting into the plot and all that. The saddest part, though, is that Percy Rodrigues isn’t voiced in this film (he was alive then, couldn’t he have done something?).

The whole thing is kind of disjointed and like I said makes a little more sense, it just isn’t any better. It also is not and was never the cult classic the first one was. The movie rating site, Rotten Tomatoes rates the first one at 61% Fresh (67% Audience Score). This one, however, is a dismal 10% Rotten (36% Audience). Yeah, the more I think about it, it really did suck, pretty much.

The main female character, Julie, is actually modeled after, drawn in the likeness of and voiced by softcore porn actress and 1993 Penthouse Pet of the Year, Julie Strain. Michael Ironside plays the main villain, Tyler.

It’s really a crappy film, but it’s somewhat entertaining when you have to have something going on while you’re doing social media, you know?  Yeah… I guess so.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Yesterday was a really great day for “rekkeds.” The BCPF and I met up with our buddy
Clay Howard at Underdog Records for some Saturday morning candy shopping. After we finished there, The BCPF and I went to Mary’s Gourmet Diner. While we were there, Clay sent a picture of something he purchased from the

Rescue Mission store. That’s basically across the street from Mary’s and we walked down there when we finished eating. I bought 17 rekkeds there (at $.50 per). So, I’ve split the haul between Underdog Records (the official vinyl sponsor of The Less Desirables) and what we grabbed at the RM. Here ya go:

From Underdog Records:

  • Kiss – Alive II (next in the KISS sequence and one of my favorites from my child hood. I spent more on this album than I ever have and hope to ever again, other than box sets).
  • Wilco – Schmilco
  • The Zombies – Odessey And Oracle
  • Stevie Wonder – Innervisions
  • Billy Idol – Whiplash Smile
  • Rod Stewart – Foolish Behaviour
  • The Human League – Fascination!
  • The Honeydrippers – Volume One
  • Jackson Browne – Late For The Sky
  • Joni Mitchell – Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter

From Rescue Mission:

  • John Addison – Tom Jones (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
  • Giuseppe Verdi – Funk & Wagnalls The Joy Of Great Music Album 12, Verdi/Vocal Excerpts From Rigoletto, La Traviata An Aida
  • Mozart* – Vocal Excerpts From Marriage Of Figaro, Magic Flute And Don Giovanni
  • Tchaikovsky*, Moscow Radio And Television Symphony Orchestra*, Dimitri Kitaenko*, Andrei Gavrilov – Piano Concerto Number 1
  • Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass* – Whipped Cream & Other Delights
  • Linda Ronstadt – Simple Dreams
  • Cat Stevens – Tea For The Tillerman
  • Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass – The Lonely Bull
  • Herb Alpert And The Tijuana Brass* – !!Going Places!!
  • Santiago And His Silver Strings – Passionate Paris: In Ping Pong Percussion
  • Tchaikovsky* – 1812 Overture – Romeo And Juliet
  • Tchaikovsky* – Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty
  • Alan Jay Lerner*, Frederick Loewe / Julie Andrews, Richard Burton (2) – Camelot (Original Broadway Cast Recording)
  • Kool And The Gang* – Ladies’ Night
  • Rod Stewart – Blondes Have More Fun
  • Various – 36 Great Motion Picture Themes And Original Soundtracks: Volume 3
  • The Norman Luboff Choir* – But Beautiful

So, there you go! A great haul as far as music goes. I have washed them all in my handy dandy system that The BCPF calls me washing my “rekked dishes.” Hopefully, some of those 50¢ albums will be worth listening to. Thanks for reading.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Sixteen Candles or: The Less Desirables Movie of the Week

Salutations™!!

a/perture cinema, the Official Movie Sponsor of The Less Desirables, presents The Less Desirables Movie of the Week, Sixteen Candles (1984), starring Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall and Michael Shoeffling.

Per IMDb: “A girl’s ‘sweet’ sixteenth birthday becomes anything but special as she suffers from every embarrassment possible.”

From one ridiculous absurdity to another, Samantha’s (Ringwald) sixteenth birthday is everything she wants it not to be. Her parents forget her birthday, a note meant to be a secret falls into the hands of the one person she doesn’t want it to, her grandparents getting her room while everyone is in for her sister’s wedding and her other grandparents feeling up her “brand new boobies.” What could be better, right?

Sixteen_Candles

Sam spends the film avoiding Jake (Shoeffling), the boy she’s really into and skirting around Farmer Ted (Hall) and his adolescent advances. It’s typical John Hughes and it’s quite entertaining. To find out if Farmer Ted or even Sam get what they’re looking for, or something else or more, you’ll have to watch.

As I said, this film is what we know of John Hughes. It was John Hughes and it is John Hughes. It wasn’t his first screenplay but it was the first film he directed and he only directed eight, but wrote a slew of them. Molly Ringwald was sixteen when the film came out. So, they had that right. It’s very predictable but very fun to watch. It’s perhaps predictable because this is one of the films that set the pace for this genre, this “coming of age” type film; the “we get how teenagers work” type, even. I meant it when I said absurdity, there was plenty of that in the film, but it showed, too that Hughes doesn’t take himself too seriously.

One thing that I have always liked about John Hughes films is the soundtracks. While not as prolific as some other Hughes films, this one has a really good soundtrack. Tunes such as “Rebel Yell” from Billy Idol, “Rumours in the Air” from Night Ranger, “True” from Spandau Ballet, “Wild Sex in the Working Class” by Oingo Boingo and “Turning Japanese” from The Vapors are all included here as is “Young Americans” from Bowie and a few TV and movie themes like “Peter Gunn” and “The Godfather.” Hughes uses music to help tell his story, not just as background filler. That’s a trademark of his, I believe.

Rotten Tomatoes has the film rated at 86% Fresh with an Audience Score of 85%. IMDb has it at 7.2 stars out of 10. It’s certainly not my favorite John Hughes film but he does a great job with it, it was witty and fun. You can see this streaming on Netflix. I do recommend you see it if you haven’t, but keep in mind that it’s not going overboard on the serious side. I rate it 4.25 stars. Have you seen it? Do you agree with me? What would like to read and hear me review?
