Today, I learned some very sad news. Finnigan’s Wake will be closing its doors permanently on October 30. Finnigan’s Wake is THE reason the Arts District in Downtown Winston-Salem exploded in to ’00s. Yes, there were other now-staples such as Sweet Potatoes and 6th & Vine, but none had the impact that Fins did. But, for me, the impact was even more than reinvigorating an area of town.

Practically nothing in my life right now would be like it is if it weren’t for Fins. How, you ask?

Me and My Best Girl

I was able to realize what others may say is ridiculous but something I’m very proud of. I was the second-ever person to join the 90-Day Club. Not only did I do 90 days, I did 1099 days. That got me some recognition and status.

I was “Trivia Tim.” I didn’t start the pub trivia at Fins but I took it over after the first three weeks and I did it for six years after. Again, people got to know me, spend time with me, and my network was greatly and largely expanded because of that.

The Less Desirables was conceived, hatched, and born sitting at the high-top table right next to the hallway. Without that, I probably wouldn’t have started other podcasts after it. No Fan Interference. No Camel City Dispatch/Electric Camel Pod. No Tart & Tangy Triad. No The Beer Dads. No The Man Who Ate the Town. No Sipping NC: The Art of Drinking. No Apartment 5B. No Beeswax Vinyl. No Beeswax Vinyl Daily. No Asylum – Tales from the Devereaux Diaries. No Wheelers Dog. No The Less Desirables Network. No podcast clients. Heck without Fins, there may not be a podcasting community here in WSNC to speak of, at least as it is. I know two or three podcasts in town that are thriving because they were inspired by me doing The Less Desirables (or one of the others) and they’ve told me that. No podcasting would mean no “Podfather.” All that I am and do wouldn’t be if there was no Finnigan’s Wake. In fact, the first place I ever met Brian Attridge who started The Less Desirables with me, was at Finnigan’s Wake.

The revitalization of downtown, in general, may still have happened but it wouldn’t be what it is if Philip “Opie” Kirby and John Cahoon hadn’t opened THE Irish pub in October of 2006.

Me, Brian and Eug, TLD…

The first place I met Jon Lowder, one of the Beer Dads and a partner/friend that I have come to thank for many of my accomplishments was at Fins.

Several of my friends who are in relationships met at Finnigan’s Wake. Which brings me to the BIGGEST link that Fins has for me: I met my wife, The BCPF, Stephanie, at Finnigan’s Wake. If she hadn’t come with her friends to play trivia and get away from her toxic, dead-end marriage, and we hadn’t started having small talk conversations, I would never have had the opportunity to ask her, “Are you married, Steph?” That conversation and the fact that she had a birthday soon around that time and I did a special trivia category for her, led to us having our 11:10p nightly computer conversations, which led to us being great friends, which led to us being more than friends, which led to us being affianced, which led to us being life partners and husband and wife.

Me and My Eug

Finnigan’s Wake is the portal to my survival, to my life, to my being, to my loves. I so appreciate that Opie has kept the pub going for so long. The pandemic was hard for everyone. It led to changes within the business. But, he says it’s not about the pandemic. He said the restaurant was kept alive by the community and patrons. He says this is about him and wanting to start something new. Move in a new direction. Pursue new ideas and thoughts. He has been all over the world. As far as I know, he’s touched every continent. If he’s missing one, I think it’s Australia. He’s bought houses. He’s raised money for charities. He’s made himself better. He’s made the community better. I am glad for my friend that he’s okay and just starting a new chapter.

When I read that this was happening, it felt as if I had lost a friend, or at the very least, been kicked in the teeth or the crotch. The memories and recollections of the last 14 years of my life (with the exception of the last one) have relied heavily on my time in the wooden doors under the green sign with the huge Claddagh, the hallowed halls of Finnigan’s Wake. Slàinte mhath, Finnigan’s Wake. Slàinte mhath.

Until tomorrow, Erin go Bragh…

Salutations™!!

My regular network group that meets on Friday mornings took the week off since it is the holiday weekend. I didn’t know what to do with myself. Well, I kind of did. I had a session yesterday morning and before that, I tried to “get ahead” by working on the Beeswax Vinyl Daily for Monday. I think I told you that it takes upwards of three hours to do one episode?

The reason that is, is because I have to aggregate the content. I have to make sure that what I’m reading is true and correct. I have to voice it. I have to find music to place as beds and I want to make sure that the appropriate music goes with what I’m talking about in the episode. It’s harder than it sounds. Timing while keeping “fair use” models in check, it’s like putting a puzzle together.

So, the “longest” part is the aggregation. The “easy” part is the voice over. The “hardest” part is placing the music. How are you enjoying the episodes so far, being as we’re only two days in? I’m a bit biased but I have listened to each and if I were an outsider, I think I’d find it informative and entertaining. When I talk to my podcast clients, I stress one word (a portmanteau, of course), “infotainment.” I hope you’re infotained.

In case you need a refresher, you can listen to today’s here.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Today, July 1, 2021, there is a new podcast on The Less Desirables Podcast Network. I alluded to it earlier this week that I was going to announce something. I mentioned that anyone who reads this blog often would recognize it. That may or may not be the case now, as I called an audible in the 11th hour. The name of the podcast is called Beeswax Vinyl Daily. I have talked about Beeswax Vinyl & More on this blog and that show will be on the TLD Network when we crank it back up.

Okay, then how was any of this an audible? It was going to called The Now Normal Daily. We know that when I talk about album anniversaries, I call the posts Now Normal Chronicles. You know that because you read this blog often. But, if you didn’t know that, would it be indicative of a music-focused podcast? No, probably not. I even set up a website for Now Normal. I will find a way to use that eventually.

So, back to the podcast, itself. When I was producing Apartment 5B, every two weeks, I would do a “Day in Music History” segment. I enjoyed doing that. So, I started one that does it every day. That’s right. It’s called Beeswax Vinyl Daily (again) and that is what it will be, a daily music history podcast. It’s about 9-12 minutes long, so it’s not a huge time commitment for the listener. It is a huge time commitment for me. It takes me about 3 hours for each episode to put together, but I love doing it.

Will I get burned out? Maybe. Probably. But for now, it will be fun; it is fun. I find a lot of stuff. I cover each day’s music/pop-culture history, what albums were released on that day (sound familiar?), who was born on that day and unfortunately, who passed away on that day.

This podcast is on The Less Desirables Podcast Network website, it’s on the Beeswax Vinyl website. It’s on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher and Spotify. Get your daily music history fix with me. I would greatly appreciate it. Leave a review on your podcatcher platform of choice. I will say that Monday episodes may be a little later in the day because one of the websites I use to aggregate info doesn’t update their info until Monday morning. And, Mondays is my busiest day for podcasting.

I am looking for sponsors for this podcast, so if you have or know someone who has a business that would like to get some daily (or weekly or one-time) love, don’t hesitate to contact me! You can find me here.

Thanks for reading and thanks for listening to the new podcast!!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

I’ve been saying, at least for the last couple of years, that I had around 1300-1400 podcast episodes under my belt. I figured that was being generous to myself. Today, I got a wild hair and went through all my archives of the podcasts I had accumulated and counted through them, worked out some math for ones that I didn’t have in front of me and from my calculations saw how many I had really done. 1300-1400 is, again, a really generous amount. But, last night, I produced Asylum – Tales From The Devereaux Diaries Podcast and that was number 1880. I have produced or co-produced one thousand eight hundred and eighty podcast episodes.

Thanks to Photogninja, Stallone Frazier for the artwork.

It started way back in 2007 when I was doing my first podcast when I owned part of the comic book store. Then came The Less Desirables and that’s when it really set things in motion. Camel City News Hour/Electric Camel Pod, Fan Interference, Tart & Tangy Triad, The Beer Dads, The Man Who Ate the Town, Sipping NC: The Art of Drinking, Apartment 5B, Beeswax Vinyl & More, and Asylum – Tales From The Devereaux Diaries are/were all totally produced by me. Wheeler’s Dog is co-produced by me (I’m associate producer). All of those are/were part of the TLD Network.

I started doing podcasts for other people and produced No Mask No Cape, Rule One Podcast, Open the Blue Door, Ring the Bell, Forsyth Magazines, Go! Launch! Grow!, The Health Geeks Book Club, Thanks But I Didn’t Ask You, Rebranded, Twisted Tulip Podcast, Hoops4LYFE/Lunch Link, Shoveling Smoke, Margaret’s Speak Easy, Center for Private Business, and a few more that I don’t have in front of me, in-house. I hosted and produced Eat Drink Triad Podcast. I have worked on Trellis Supportive Care podcast.

There have been a few like Thrive, Transformative Conversations, Locked In, Unscripted with Briana Conner are recorded off-site and sent to me to do cleanup/final touches/production.

I have the whole list that I counted at my studio, I’m writing this at home. I am probably missing stuff here. But, all of those came out to be 1880. Man… that’s a shload. The BCPF says perhaps I should be called Pod Grandfather instead of Podfather. What do you think, Dear Reader?

Until tomorrow, let’s do a podcast!

Salutations™!!

Moving the Haul to today so I could rant yesterday. You know how it is, Dear Reader.

Saturday was a good day. Breakfast, Underdog Records, records listening, dinner, binge watching The Crown and Will & Grace. Here’s the haul, I think we got good stuff:

©Red Star/BMG

Nat King Cole – Nat King Cole Golden Treasury “Unforgettable” — Our ever-expanding Nat King Cole collection got six records bigger. This 6×LP collection is in VG++ shape (best I can tell) and is chock-full of Nat’s finest tunes. 60 tunes to be exact. The Canadian version had an extra LP with 10 extra songs. The box is nice and is probably in VG shape. It is an original 1966 edition.

Suicide – Suicide — The 1977 debut album from this eclectic, somewhat weird and groundbreaking American duo. It’s synth punk, early new wave, somewhat minimalist synth pop. It was #441 on the RS list that matters and slipped to #498 on the one that doesn’t. It’s on blood red vinyl. New, remastered, deluxe and limited edition.

Various – Streets Of Fire – Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack — “I Can Dream About You” from Dan Hartman would have been enough to buy this record. Really, that is why I bought the record. That and I didn’t already have it. I thought the film was decent and I just wanted it. It’s a club edition which really makes little difference to me. It is BMG/RCA club which tends to be a little less on quality than the Columbia House versions, but whatever. VG+.

ZZ Top – El Loco — Two Beards with a Beard (what I call ZZ Top) had a classic rock, Texan blues based sound in the 70s and with this album, started a trend that opened them to a whole new audience (like me) and synths started to become part of the process. The hits from this were “Tube Snake Boogie” and “Pearl Necklace.” Both which were innuendo and double entendre. This was the last album before the first time I heard of the band which was the next album, Eliminator. That’s right, I had never even heard of them until then. VG++/EX.

AC/DC – Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap — I’ve never been a huge AC/DC fan but this album, Highway to Hell and Back in Black, I love. Heavens Sake did “Big Balls” and I really enjoy that tune. This is in EX condition.

Buffalo Springfield – Buffalo Springfield — This was the original pressing of this album because it does not have “For What It’s Worth” on it. That song was released as an independent single and did a great job. ATCO (the record company) decided to repress the album with that song on it, so to capitalize. This doesn’t have it, so it’s an original pressing. It’s a decent shape. Jonathan has it listed as VG, and overall I think that’s correct. The cover is VG/VG- to me.

Underdog Records was kicking it when we went in. Few people when we first got there (right after opening) but people started shuffling in. Good for Jonathan! So, we haven’t worked all the details about it yet and I don’t want to mention half details but I can say that Jonathan and I are rebooting the Beeswax Vinyl & More podcast. Some aspects of the old show may stick around while new aspects will be added. When we have things nailed down to format, I’ll write a post about that.

Meanwhile, go to Underdog Records for all your vinyl needs, be it turntables, protective sleeves, dust brushes, or the records themselves. They are opened Thursday-Saturday with store-to-porch deliveries (weather permitting) Monday-Wednesday. You can shop NEW vinyl, anytime, day or night, by visiting the Underdog website.

I use Discogs to track my collection and on occasion add to it from the Marketplace. I’m waiting on a purchase, now, so hopefully by next weekend I can tell you some good news.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Salutations™!!

Today I get to celebrate a holiday that many celebrate now but when I started there were a lot fewer. Today is International Podcast Day.

I have mentioned before that I have been podcasting longer than probably 98% people in the area and probably that much or more continuously. I started podcasting in 2007 when I was co-owner of a local comic book store. We only did about 5 or 6 that was even worth mentioning and it most of that was rehashing recorded conference calls with Marvel Comics execs. But, it was a start and wasn’t what I wanted to do. I wanted to do a radio show. I wanted to talk about pop culture. I still want to do radio. And, in a way, I do.

I started The Less Desirables with my pal Brian Attridge on February 3, 2010. You know that story. Eugene came along, Brian left, Caitlin came, Eugene left, Bruce came, Bruce left, Danielle came, Caitlin left, Bethany came. I’ve talked that ad nauseum by now. I wanted to do more than The Less Desirables, though. I wanted a whole network of podcasts, whether I was involved or not, perhaps just as an associate producer. Also, I wanted to get my “studio” out of my house and into a real business location.

So, in late 2012, Eugene and I moved all my stuff from my bedroom loft to a spot in the Chatham Building off of Fourth Street in WSNC. Soon after, in early 2013, I started producing both the Camel City News Hour hosted by Chad Nance and Fan Interference hosted by Ty Collins. CCNH lasted a few years and Fan Interference is still going today. Later in 2013, Nikki Miller-Ka, The BCPF and I started Tart & Tangy Triad, a food news podcast. That went until early 2016.

In February 2015, five years after starting The Less Desirables, Jon Lowder, Paul Jones, and I started The Beer Dads Podcast, after we were sitting at Small Batch Beer trying to decide what we were going to do a podcast about and I came in complaining about 3B, my son. We recorded it and Jon and Paul have become partners of mine. We have crossed the 200 episode mark.

In July of 2016, I recorded my first episode of The Man Who Ate the Town Podcast because I wanted another food podcast and had to rebut nasty comments about a critique of a local restaurant that I was actually a fan of. That is still going and I have had four co-hosts. Kelly Bone was my first, followed by Tim Johnson, then Ray Morgan. Ray is still with me and we have added Lea Metz to our lineup. I love them both being there. We will record episode 170 next week.

In late 2016, I started Sipping NC: The Art of Drinking Podcast with Jordan Keiper and we had a lot of drinking to do, for sure. We recorded into 2017 had to pause due to an illness in Jordan’s family. We are still on that hiatus, although Jordan and I have discussed, along with Danielle from TLD restarting it back up, but C-19 and other issues have kept us from doing that.

In 2018, along with “Jeff Evans” and Rory, we started Apartment 5B: Irrational Conversations with the Cool Breezes of Anytown, USA. We did that up to the pandemic, which JE’s wife was getting ready to have a baby, so we put everything on hold and we haven’t started back up.

In July 2019, Clay Howard and I started Beeswax Vinyl & More, a podcast that explored music in a different way. Clay’s schedule didn’t allow for him to do that long. I’m exploring other options for that. I haven’t given up on it. Stay tuned.

In February of 2020, Eugene B Sims started his long-awaited podcast, Wheeler’s Dog. He does two a week, one for the general public and one for his Patreon subs. I am an “associate producer” for that show. It’s all Eug, really. But, it is on my network.

And, finally, in July of this year, my “Kousins” Gary and Marvin and I started Asylum: The Tales from the Devereaux Diaries Podcast. We talk music but almost exclusively about our favorite band, KISS.

Also, I have produced a lot of podcasts for companies and clients. Forsyth Magazines, Blue Door Group, Phoenix Rising, Ring the Bell Realty, Center for Private Business, Dr. Shawn Ricks, and more are on the way in the next few months.

So, podcasting is now in my blood. I have done it so long and for so many that I’ve been christened, “The Podfather” and I love that title. I run with it and will continue to do so. So, to all my podcasting co-horts, whether they’re mine or not, to those in the community that do podcasts that I’m not part of but may have been inspired by (so I’ve been told) and to the people who listen to them, HAPPY INTERNATIONAL PODCAST DAY!!!!!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Then, I “produced” Wheeler’s Dog today. Thursday I will do Fan Interference. So, other than Apartment 5B and Sipping NC: The Art of Drinking, all of the TLD Network shows have been or will be released this week.

Salutations™!!

As has been the case for the last month, we haven’t really gotten anything new because Underdog Records is affected just like everything else in the world right now. So, in the spirit of “normalcy,” or the “Now Normal” that I call it, I used my listening time during the week hitting Discogs’ awesome shuffle feature and picked albums that I have and streamed them. I pay for Napster (the same that used to be arsehats and cheat artists out of their money, but they’re legit – they used to be Rhapsody) and the artists get paid for my listens, so yay for that. So, here’s what I listened to this week under headphones (not counting what I listened to for Beeswax Vinyl & More):

ListeningCollage419

  • Stan Getz – Captain Marvel
  • Peter Nero – Summer Of ’42
  • The Alan Parsons Project – Pyramid
  • Sly & The Family Stone – Fresh
  • R.E.M. – Lifes Rich Pageant
  • Various – Ghostbusters (Original Soundtrack)
  • INXS – Listen Like Thieves
  • Jaco Pastorius – Jaco Pastorius
  • Def Leppard – Pyromania
  • Depeche Mode – Music For The Masses
  • Billy Squier – Emotions In Motion
  • Frank Sinatra – Sinatra’s Swingin’ Session!!!
  • Elton John – Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy
  • Chet Baker – Chet
  • The Rolling Stones – Their Satanic Majesties Request

That’s a pretty good “listens” list, I think. Then yesterday, The BCPF and I got to listen to some records. We did our usual alternating turns and it was all “random grab” via Discogs shuffle. Here’s that list (in no particular order):20200419_113623

  • The Fresh & Onlys – Wolf Lie Down
  • Seth Avett & Jessica Lea Mayfield – Sing Elliott Smith
  • The Beatles – Abbey Road
  • Band Of Horses – Why Are You Ok
  • Missing Persons – Spring Session M
  • The Decemberists – I’ll Be Your Girl
  • Fleetwood Mac – Bare Trees20200419_113500

That’s my listening for the week. I really cannot wait until Underdog Records opens back up. This is really hard. It’s like having to ween off candy. Jonathan is my “candy man” and the records my candy. Well, you can still purchase things from him. Just go to their Instagram and Facebook pages and see what he’s putting out for sale. He’ll deliver to you, either personally or ship them to you. You can shop via the Underdog Records website, as well. You can also purchase one of the new Underdog Records t-shirts and proceeds go to Underdog Records to help them stay afloat. See how here.

You see the marvel of Discogs already in this post.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…
