Salutations™!!

Today is the 48th anniversary of America’s self-titled debut album. I picked this version of this song (which wasn’t originally included with the album) because this dude has a righteous beard. And, he sings nicely. Enjoy!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

We did a special Fourth of July edition of Apartment 5B today. A5BLogoTestCrop

Other than the music history section, everything was U-S-A all the way.

We talked about a Mental Floss article that was kind of a let down with “facts about July Fourth that you didn’t know.” Most of it… we knew.

We talked about our “Mount Rushmore” of movies that have “America” or “American” in the title. A “Mount Rushmore” is our collective top 4 that should be the pinnacle, or at least as we see it, of the genre/subject we discuss.

Of course, there are throat punches and “F your birthdays” happening. It’s a lot of fun but it is seriously NSFW.

You can listen to the episode HERE.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

The BCPF and I did a little jumbling around yesterday. We actually started at Underdog Records instead of it being the last stop of the morning. We had a ribbon cutting at Moji Coffee and More at noon and then had breakfast at Mary’s Gourmet Diner, our first time there in about six months. But, I had gone by Underdog on Friday to grab some stuff for The BCPF and me before someone else took off with it. Anywhat! Here’s the haul:

Donald_Fagen_-_The_Nightfly.jpg

©Warner Bros.

  • Bad Books – III — I said on my Instagram post about this album yesterday that one of the joys of having Underdog Records as the official music sponsor of The Less Desirables is making the commercials. It gets me to listen to snippets of new stuff that is highlighted releases. I heard the first song on this and knew right away it is right up The BCPF’s alley so I made sure I picked it up. I was right in thinking she’d love it. The win for me! New.
  • Steve Earle – Guitar Town — #489 on the RS list. I have never really been a fan of his and I think the reason why is “Copperhead Road.” This album is a good album and not a bad listen. I listened to it a few years back now and was surprised that I didn’t hate it. Would I want to listen to it often? Nah. But I was glad to get it in my collection. VG+.
  • Caleb Caudle – Paint Another Layer On My Heart — Caleb is a local dude. He’s been on The Less Desirables and plays around here often. He’s gotten pretty big and does tours. I’m glad to know him. VG++.
  • Band Of Horses – Cease To Begin — One of the ones that I grabbed on Friday because I know how much The BCPF loves Band of Horses. Before we ever started dating, she put a song from this album on a mix-CD for me. It’s a great listen. NM.
  • Band Of Horses – Why Are You Ok — She got not one, but two Band of Horses albums this weekend. She was happy. Both were NM, too.
  • Donald Fagen – The Nightfly — I love Steely Dan and I think most of that is because of Donald Fagen. This had two hits on it but the whole album is fantastic. It seems like he had more fluidity outside of the Steely Dan confines and just had a ball with this album. I told The BCPF, when “New Frontier” came on that I thought the video featured a bomb shelter. So, I looked it up. I was right. This was my favorite listen of the day yesterday. VG+.
  • Elvis Costello And The Attractions – Punch The Clock — Elvis’ eighth studio album. It contains “Everyday I Write the Book” and “Shipbuilding.” VG++.
  • Elvis Costello And The Attractions – Blood & Chocolate — Elvis goes by Napoleon Dynamite (not to be confused with the film, which I loved) on this album. It’s a decent listen. I never realized how creepy “I Want You” is, but I like it anyway. VG++.
  • X – Ain’t Love Grand — First Wave heavy, yet poppy punk. It was a good listen. I hear some of their stuff on SiriusXM sometimes. I like it. Singer Exene Cervenka channels her inner Kate Pearson on this album. VG+.
  • Timbuk 3 – Eden Alley — I never knew the couple had more than their first album and here we are two weeks in a row getting a Timbuk3 album. The BCPF said she had this one when she was a young girl. It’s not epic stuff, or even great for that matter, but it’s a great, fun listen. VG+.
  • U.K. – U.K. — A progressive supergroup with singer/bassist John Wetton (formerly of King Crimson, Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry’s band and Uriah Heep), keyboardist/electric violinist Eddie Jobson (formerly of Curved Air, Roxy Music and Frank Zappa’s band), guitarist Allan Holdsworth (formerly of Tempest, Soft Machine, The New Tony Williams Lifetime and Gong) and drummer Bill Bruford (formerly a full member of Yes and King Crimson, and also a tour drummer for Genesis). It is from 1978 but sounds more 80s-ish. Jonathan played if for me in the store. I liked it so I took it! I mean I paid for it, but I bought it. VG-.
  • Shalamar – Heartbreak — The first Shalamar album after Jodi Whatley and Jeffrey Daniel left. It has the only song I know of by the band, “Dancing in the Sheets.” I may find that I know more, but I don’t know. VG+.
  • Various – A Musical Souvenir Of New York City —  Featuring The David Terry Orchestra, The Cherry Hill Songsters, The Travellers Three and The Troubadors. It’s an album of songs about NYC. It’s from 1964 and the picture is of Manhattan but without the WTC since that wasn’t opened until 1973. A $1 bin find. VG/VG+.
  • America – America — This is the 1972 reissue in which “A Horse with No Name” is included. It was originally released as a single after the debut album was released but it was such a success that Warner Bros. reissued it with the song included. $1 bin find. VG.

Was a great day yesterday and the store was jumping. I love seeing Underdog Records busy. If you’ve not listened to the latest episode of The Less Desirables, you should. Each episode we mention the TLD/UR special of the week. I also use Discogs to keep up with my collection so when someone asks, “how many records do you have?” I can blurt out we have XXXX amount and they’re always amazed that I know that. I know that because of Discogs. “Do you have this record?” Why yes. Or, not yet!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

This week marks the 47th anniversary of America’s America album. It was originally released without the mega-hit “A Horse With No Name” but that song became a hit and it was reissued early in 1972 with that song included. So here we have a lovely young lady doing her rendition of “Horse” with a little laidback stoner quality, but more importantly, she has great vocal fluctuations throughout. She’s French but I love the accent coming through, too. Enjoy!

America, Ben Sasse, Constitution, Life, Life as It is

Salutations™!!

This is not and will not be a forum for a “yeah, but Trump…” or “yeah, but Obama/Hillary…” post and I won’t allow anyone else to use it as such either. This is just telling it like it is. I am a lefty and I don’t hide that, but this near-center-righty is spot on. Someone says, “they haven’t done their job in years.” I say we haven’t done OUR job in years. No matter what side of the “aisle” you’re on, the Constitution makes it clear what role each branch is responsible for. You have to understand that. If you don’t like the policy that is put in place from the laws YOUR legislators are putting forth, then get out there and vote. Do YOUR job. You are responsible for putting them there and removing them. Even if you don’t vote for them.

“Debate” is a term long-forgotten in our present society. No one “debates” anymore. Everyone “tells” what their opinion is and damn you if you disagree with them. I’m guilty of it. You’re guilty of it. We all say we have open minds but in reality, we don’t. We have our views and we surround ourselves with our own choir to agree with and it turns into Sharks vs Jets complete with finger snapping and slouch-dancing.

I think Civics should be brought back to the forefront in school education and not just history. Why does the Legislative branch own the responsibility (and apparently not the actual execution or in our present case doing the writing) of writing our laws? Why is the Executive branch in charge of enforcing them? Why is the Judicial in charge of interpreting the law without political views (even though they’re most certainly political)?

Republican Senator Ben Sasse tells it like it is. He lays out both the expectation of each branch and the harsh reality of what the landscape looks like today. Again, I’m lefty and this righty speaks volumes. His points are not Democratic or Republican. His points are American, which is a republic as a governance. We democratically appoint people to represent us. And, dammit. If they don’t, we fire them and replace them with people that do. They have decided to let their incumbency be more important than doing what we put them there to do. They allow lobbyists to make the decisions, or the Executive branch, or the Judicial branch, create or dictate laws. That’s not how this is supposed to work, folks.

NONE of this is a knock on President Trump, that’s a whole other subject. This is not pushing around Republicans/Conservatives, Democrats/Liberals, Independents or any mixture thereof. This is not a “political” rant, this is an American Constitutional rant. Politics shouldn’t be involved in the Constitution. At least not beyond the first definition of the word: the art or science of government. Outside of that comes to opinion, control, and competition. Those are fine in the business world but we aren’t a business, we’re a nation. If we are a business then the stakeholders need to oust the board members.

We all, myself included, get caught up in the “us v them” stuff.  We don’t get along in that regard. We have to face the consequences of our decisions and we don’t. We put the blame on others. Again, I am not excusing myself from this. I do it. You do it. We do it. I try to keep quiet on most political things. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But, something else I agree on with Senator Sasse, bring back Schoolhouse Rock! Because this “Three-Ring Circus” is without a ringleader and the tigers escaped.

I’m sorry, Dear Reader, I know this isn’t like me, but I just had to say it. If there are comments that are “politically slanted” or anyone mentions a candidate, office holder, former office holder, etc., that comment will be deleted. Yes, the Constitution that I’m ranting about gives the right of free speech, but that also includes me not having to allow it on my page. Sorry again if anything is harsh, we just aren’t going to survive as a society until we realize how to conduct ourselves all across the board. And I’m sorry for using the word “damn” or “dammit.” I don’t usually cuss on this blog.

Until tomorrow, soapbox under the bed…

Salutations™!!

The BCPF and I were able to get to Underdog Records fairly early, thanks to getting up and walking our butts off ahead of our regular schedule. We saw only one of our regular crowd, but I chalk that up to the earlier time and the fact that Fiesta 2017 was right up the street. The haul was modest but we got some great stuff!Lick_it_up_cover

  • Kiss – Lick It Up (next in the KISS discography, this was the first time that I had ever listened to this album on vinyl and I almost cried, I could hear things that I never noticed before, new)
  • Mogwai – Every Country’s Sun (2xLP in 180g and on cool clear vinyl, new)
  • Luna – A Sentimental Education (cover album on clear green vinyl, new)
  • Circa Survive – The Amulet (indie record store exclusive clear/blue splatter vinyl, new)
  • Wayne Shorter – Speak No Evil (my first ever Blue Note album and man, it was fantastic! new)
  • Camper Van Beethoven – Camper Van Beethoven (not-quite-rare NM copy, The BCPF was nearly jumping up and down)
  • Three Dog Night – Joy To The World – Their Greatest Hits
  • Miles Davis – My Old Flame
  • Michel Legrand – The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg (Les Parapluies De Cherbourg)
  • The Boswell Sisters – The Boswell Sisters 1932-34

  • Alice Cooper – Easy Action
  • Henry Mancini And His Orchestra – Uniquely Mancini
  • Dick Powell – In Hollywood (1933•1935)
  • The New Christy Minstrels – The Quiet Sides Of The New Christy Minstrels
  • Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald – The Magic Of Christmas
  • Stars On – Stars On Long Play II

  • America – Hideaway
  • America – Hearts
  • Fred Hall’s Jazz Band, The Ambassadors, Bert Stock And His Orchestra, Ipana Troubadours, Milt Shaw And His Detroiters, Julie Wintz And His Orchestra – Blue Notes And Hot Rhythm (I spent an hour and a half to put this in Discogs, it was one I discussed last week)

There’s also an album that we got yesterday that wasn’t in Discogs. It’s all in German so it may take me a bit to put that in. If you’re looking for something and don’t see it in Underdog Records, Jonathan can special order it for you. You can also make purchases online via their website, including preorders. Listen to The Less Desirables to hear the weekly Underdog/TLD special. Obviously, I use Discogs to document, archive and keep track of my collection. You should, too.

Salutations™!!

I posted this yesterday on Facebook and decided to repost it here, because not all of my followers are friends with me on Facebook. Some follow this blog directly, some are just on Twitter and some even are only on Tumblr. The same rules apply here: no political campaigning for ‘your’ candidate because I don’t care, no attacking anyone else for their views. I will delete the comment and block you from commenting on the blog. If you want to discuss things, then that may happen. Enjoy and thanks for reading.american-flag-18

What in the world!?!? I know that BOTH (or all four) sides have seemingly lost their minds with their presidential candidates. I know that the candidates get their parties’ supporters riled up as well as the opposition’s. It gets heated. The candidates are certainly polarizing. I think passion is important and we should have passion behind what we feel is best for the country.

However, when that passion turns into stupidity, violence and malice, things have gone too far. I’m not pointing fingers at any one side as I think both sides have their faults and the worst is starting to rear their ugly heads. From firebombing the Republican headquarters in (I think) Orange County, NC, calling them “nazis,” to people running people off the road who have bumper stickers that don’t agree with another’s political stance (yes, that does happen, as much as some people want to make jokes about it, my wife was one that was victim of an aggression, but there have been others that have claimed it and I’m sure it’s not only one party but both), people are completely losing their minds. It’s ridiculous.

BOTH sides (I’m not excluding Libertarians or any other outside the 2-party people, but most of you are keeping cool) want to talk about how much they ARE ‘Merica, but this is not American. This is what happens in the countries and societies that we are constantly fighting with. Burning buildings of those you disagree with, running someone off the road or, hopefully not, killing someone because you don’t agree with them is absolutely asinine. Is it really worth that? Is it worth your neighbor’s life? Is it worth possibly hurting or killing someone because you’re ticked off or riled up? In whose world is that okay? I’m not talking sides here, I’m talking whole. It’s not a liberal thing, it’s not a conservative thing. It’s not a Republican thing, it’s not a Democrat thing. Life is sacred, at least it should be. If we’re at war with someone, then you know what we do what we gotta do, but, we have to take up for each other in this country.

I know who I’m voting for. I know who most of you are voting for. I have friends and family that believe differently than I do. And, I still care for them, all. I don’t usually “unfriend” for disagreeing with me. I have unfollowed a couple of people, not because they disagree with me, but the utter trash that comes out of their mouths or fingers. I like staying friends with them. After the election, no matter who wins, I’ll probably follow them again. But, you know what? None of it matters enough to try to harm someone else.

If Trump wins, yes, I’ll be disappointed, but I’ll accept it and chalk it up to the democratic process. Then, we move on to what can we do to make America best for EVERYONE, not just Trump supporters. I can keep an open mind. If Hillary wins, I don’t plan on gloating about it and shoving it in anyone’s face. We’ll find a way to make America best for EVERYONE, not just Hillary supporters. But there has to be open minds. But, again, nothing is worth harming someone else. Everyone… EVERYONE needs to settle down. I know you can’t actually please everyone but you can please as many as possible. Close-mindedness is why we’re where we are, now.

Everyone is our neighbor. We don’t have to agree or even like each other but what good does it do to harm someone else? You’re not a bigger or better person if you do that. You’re an idiot if you do that. We should respect each others’ choice to agree with us or not. How I’m going to vote is my right, just as it’s yours. Both sides talk about rights, but talk about them as if it only applies to you and who you “agree with.” Dems/Reps/libs/cons, you all have the same collection of rights. None of you are better than anyone else. No matter what you think.

I am sure that I’m probably either talking to myself or preaching to the choir, but if you’re allowing your political views (again, no matter what they are) to influence you into wanting to harm someone, then you, my friend, have a problem. That’s to ALL “sides.”

If you think I’m talking to you directly (this isn’t aimed at anyone, it’s aimed at everyone), I am sorry you feel that way, I’m not. I am not interested in your political view, whether you agree with me or not. If anyone wants to talk about it, I’m cool. It’s cool. I won’t talk politics, though. If you mention anything about why one candidate is better than the other, try to influence anyone to vote one way or another or if you’re rude to anyone else’s civil conversation on this post or anything else on my page, it will be deleted and you’ll fall into that “unfollow” list. I don’t care how you vote, in the end it doesn’t matter. Not to the extent of anyone’s well being at the hand of “followers.” I’ve said my piece and hope for peace. I hope you have a good, safe night and I can’t wait until this ridiculous election is over; no matter who wins.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

It’s the 4th of July and I’m off. I have no podcasts to do today. I had a couple of blog posts over the last few days and into today, but other than that? I have not much to do. I’m gonna leave this video and just walk away (imagine that happened). Enjoy your day! Tomorrow? Back to the grind!

Salutations™!!

Because I know that the internet, Facebook, Twitter, television and radio are inundating our lives with tributes and “Never Forget” memes and themes, I’m going to not do that today. In fact, I struggled with myself as to whether I’d write about it or not. I think it should be a solemn self-reflection from everyone who witnessed that day. My son did not (obviously if you read my post yesterday) but I think he should understand what it means to us that did. Take time to educate the young ones.

I get really annoyed of the “Never Forget” stuff. I don’t mean any disrespect for the lives that were personally touched for good or bad on that day. I’m just expressing that I think that we, the generation that lived it, we can’t and won’t forget it. I’ll just be glad when it’s a scar and not a scab that we repeatedly rip off every year. To the 2,977 physical victims and the billions that are mental and emotional victims of 9/11/01, I offer the rest of this post (with the exception of this picture), or the lack thereof, blank for you.
