Salutations™!!

I know I said that I was done with these, but I had to write about something, right?

Today is the 44th anniversary of the release of KISS’ Dressed to Kill album. Probably my least favorite of the “Klassic KISS” albums, it still has plenty of proud moments for me. One of my favorite KISS tunes is “She” and while that was originally a Wicked Lester tune (co-written by Gene and Stephen Coronel), really no one ever heard it like that and I think most people would prefer there not be flutes, a la Jethro Tull, in their KISS songs. Incidentally, today is also the anniversary of Aqualung. I just thought I’d throw that out there.

Other great songs on this album are “C’mon and Love Me” which I performed probably as much as any KISS song in Heavens Sake, “Rock Bottom,” “Two Timer,” and “Love Her All I Can,” also a former Wicked Lester tune but completely written by Paul. Those are the great tunes from the album (including “She”). Then there are the mid-card KISS tunes like “Room Service,” “Ladies in Waiting,” “Getaway,” and “Anything For My Baby.” These are okay but nothing really kicks me from them.

Of course, the “elephant in the room” is that song. And by that song, I mean that song.

I have to give credit where credit is due, without that song, KISS may have never been what they became. Without that song there probably wouldn’t have been any Destroyers, Unmasked, solo albums, Lick It Up, Revenge, Sonic Boom and so on. I’m almost positive that without that song, Casablanca Records would have folded after the release of Alive! later in the year. But, I really don’t like that song. That’s not true. I am so burnt out on that song. I cringe when I hear it come on, but I have to respect it. That song made KISS KISS. I know this. I am just so over it. More than any other KISS song, I don’t care if I never hear it again, although I know I certainly will.

Okay, enough, that song is obviously “Rock and Roll All Nite.”

Paul and Gene were basically told by Bill Aucoin, their manager, who was in turn told by Neil Bogart, the president of Casablanca Records, that they had to write an anthem. They didn’t really know what he meant. What he meant was a “cheerleading song,” something everyone can sing along to. So, they cranked this thing out. The words make no sense really, but hey, it was 1975. Really, though, name an “anthem” that is more known than this tune. I’ll wait. “Twist and Shout?” “Shout?” “Hey Jude?” I don’t know if any of them are as potent as “RNRAN.” Anyway, the KISS haters will debate that all day long. KISS fans may try to include “Shout It Out Loud” (Destroyer) or “I Love It Loud” (Creatures of the Night), but I’m pretty sure that while we may all be tired of “RNRAN,” we’d be hard-pressed to put those ahead of it.

Funds at Casablanca Records were tight. So tight, in fact, that when the band was brought in the studio after touring, they couldn’t even afford to hire a proper producer. So, Bogart did the work himself. I think he did okay. It’s not the most sonically-dynamic KISS album, but it’s not the worst sounding either.

This was KISS’ third album in just 13 months. Today, that would be unheard of. KISS was released in February 1974 and Hotter Than Hell in October 1974. This was March 1975. There was little time to write and prepare, which, I believe, is why there are two Wicked Lester songs on the album. I also believe that is why there are so many mid-card songs on the album. And, I think it is why the album is so short. The whole thing comes in at 30:07. That’s 15 minutes per side on vinyl. It’s almost EP length in comparison to standards.

Gene played rhythm guitar on “Ladies in Waiting” and Ace played all guitars and bass on “Getaway” (he wrote) and “Rock Bottom” (he co-wrote). Peter sang “Getaway.” Four of the tunes made it to Alive! 

It does have one of the coolest covers, though. I love the boys in business suits. All of them, except Peter, had to borrow theirs because they didn’t own one. If you notice, Gene has on some open-backed high-heeled clogs or something and they’re a little small for his feet. The heel is about an inch out of the back of the shoe. The back cover is the negative of that cover photo.

The album was certified gold in 1977. To my knowledge, it hasn’t progressed from there.

It sits at #29 on my KISS list (out of a possible 32), which surprises a lot of folks. Sorry, it’s just not up there on my “want-to-listen” list. But, it is a KISS Klassic and, again, I give it mad props because of that.

Salutations™!!

I’ve been concentrating on so much honeymoon stuff (and there is still plenty to come for that) that I have neglected my “list” and thought it was time to get back to it, if you will.

So I’ve listened to a lot more than I’ve written about; more than I will write about today.  So I’ll try to break down the next 10 on the list.

#440 – Rum, Sodomy & The Lash by The Pogues. Ok, so, this is the first time that I remember ever listening to The Pogues.  It reminds me of hanging out at my favorite Irish pub (in this case, being Finnigan’s Wake Irish Pub & Kitchen in Winston-Salem) on St. Patrick’s Day, it being close to 1am and everyone – including the band – are spaced out of their minds on Guinness and Jameson Irish Whiskey.  From there it just trips into a full-blown drunken Irish-fest that makes me dread waking up in the morning.  Although I’ve never had a hangover, this would probably give me one.  The whole album was non-stop kick-arse (see what I did there?) Irish nonsense and that is a great thing.  Could I listen to a lot of it? No way. But this was worth the listen.  Dug.

#439 – One Night Stand – Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963 by Sam Cooke. Generally, I hate live albums.  I did not hate this live album. Some of my faves from this album is “Chain Gang” and “Cupid.”  There’s a lot of soul coming through on this disc.  It was the way I like albums, not too long and not full of fluff.  I, like everyone, feel that my time is important and I don’t want to waste it with crap.  This was not crap.  Dug.

Boys Don’t Cry by The Cure

#438 – Boys Don’t Cry by The Cure.  For some CRAZY reason, this album is not available on Rhapsody (which you’ll see is not uncommon in this list) and I had to be a bit creative.  Actually, creativity is relative; I just found all the songs and put them in order via the track listing on Wikipedia. Resourceful is probably a better word, instead. Hey! It is a compilation album, so I compiled. Anywhat!  I thought the album was edgy, which considering the artists in question, it should have been.  I think I’m still stuck on how it was a compilation album when at the time of its release there was only one album (Three Imaginary Boys) out from them .  I know “Killing an Arab” was controversial and therefore left off that premiere album.  Maybe it was some of that stuff. I don’t know.  All I do know is that I thought the album was good, just confusing as to why it actually was a record, I think. Dug.

#437 – Tha Carter III by Lil Wayne.  Pfft. Some of the music on this album was OK but, really I couldn’t take his whining seriously.  It was like listening to a 13 year old try to hit on girls and failing miserably.  Not saying that’s what he did this whole album, but enough to matter.  Some may say that I’m listening with my ears and not my mind or heart, or whatever it is they say, but the fact is, my ears have to hear it and they don’t like it – at all.  I almost skipped even putting this in the review, but because I did listen to the whole thing, I think it was awful and uninteresting. I did not dig this one, at all.

#436 –  Sea Change by Beck. I was dreading this one, too.  I was.  I was waiting for the familiar “Loser”-esque songs to start.  This album is why I do this list; to find things that I either didn’t know about or had misconceptions about.  I sat through the first three songs: “The Golden Age,” Paper Tiger,” and “Guess I’m Doing Fine,” with a confused look on my face.  I didn’t understand what I was hearing.  In fact, I went back and listened to the album again, later.  I would own this album.  It’s a departure from what I think of when I think of Beck (again “Loser”).  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not opposed to “Loser” but I have to be in the mood to hear that kind of stuff.  This album carried a whole different perspective for me.  Some of my faves are “Guess I’m Doing Fine,” “The Golden Age,” “Lonesome Tears,” and, really I can’t point to anything I didn’t like. The whole thing = awesome!  I want this album. Dig doesn’t even cut it here!

#435 – In Utero by Nirvana.  So like #436, I was so dreading this one.  I put it on, sat back and waited for the suckage to start.  To my surprise, it never did.  I should clarify.  I was one of the many “hair band” era musicians who were in bands that wanted to do what everyone else did at the time and then Nirvana came along and crushed the dreams of many.  Kurt Cobain and his followers, to me, were the bane of my existence and how anyone could compare him to John Lennon, I would never understand. There was references about him not killing himself soon enough among other things.  I can say that I am not proud of those sentiments and although I think he was a piece of crapola, I can’t deny his songwriting abilities.  I’ll never understand, nor believe, that he can even touch John Lennon, but those who do, I can’t argue with you.  All that said, this album is truly a great rock album.  As a life long sufferer of Tourette Syndrome, who doesn’t love a song named “Tourette’s?”  Nothing matches the hits on this album, though.  “All Apologies” and “Heart-Shaped Box” are the shiznit, no lie.  DUG!

#434 – #1 Record by Big Star. My second exposure of Big Star on this countdown.  Again, not what I expected.  “Feel” is a old-fashioned rock tune that has a great chord progression and dissonance that makes for creative song construction.  Really the whole album is ahead of its time.  I don’t feel the dissonance was really realized until many years later and here it was as common as a family supper on Sunday. The production was slick as heck, too.  The dual lead singers made this a formidable force in music at the time, even though I, admittedly, was shut out from much of that until now.  I didn’t know what I was missing and it’s a shame to say so.  Harmonies that are tighter than a drum and the excellent musicianship and songwriting over all make this a wonderful album to listen to.  DUG!

#433 – All Things Must Pass by George Harrison.  Ok, here’s the thing.  This is one of those inexplicable absences on Rhapsody that I spoke of earlier.  And, because it’s a triple album (meaning a shload of songs), on top of the fact that I own it (but haven’t listened to it in album order, yet) I didn’t want to piece it together.  Since I have it, I WILL listen to it.  However, at the time of this writing, I haven’t thus far but will.  I’ll update the blog with its inclusion at a later date, I promise.

#432 – Here Come the Warm Jets by Brian Eno.  Um… I’m sad to say I don’t know anything of Roxy Music before Avalon. From what I can gather, it was a glamish/arty kind of thing.  I will have to listen back on some of it, when I get the chance.  So, also from what I can gather,  this was a lot like what Roxy Music was by the time Eno left them.  Really, my only knowledge of  him was a little bit of his experimental ambient music.  I once had a VHS tape (remember those?) in which you had to turn the television on its side, which was hard for those with console TVs (I didn’t but my parents did) and it was like some bubblish blue haze thing that had some naked women dancing or something, I don’t really know. I watched about 20 minutes of it and was confused.  I turned the TV back to the position it was supposed to be in and realized that the TV never worked the same again.  The only other knowledge I have of Eno is his work with U2 and Genesis. Anywhat.  This is fun and experimental but I don’t know how much I can listen to it.  “Needles in the Camel’s Eye” and “Dead Finks Don’t Talk” are both interesting as is “The Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch.”  I really don’t know what more to say, here.  Um… dig…ish?

Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea by PJ Harvey

#431 – Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea by PJ Harvey.  I had no real experience with PJ before this.  Kind of like a mellower version of Hole with a singer who can really sing.  So I guess it’s not like Hole at all.  All the angst with all the talent, I’d say.  Great instrumentation and great vocals. Her vocals are haunting yet direct and in your face.  It’s refreshing and it’s fairly low on the list at #431.  There is one more PJ Harvey album on the list (still in the 400s) coming and no more, that’s disappointing.  I’d return to this one at a later time to listen through a few more times, and look forward to doing so.  I’d go as far as saying I’d own it.  Some faves: “A Place Called Home,” “Big Exit,” and one of my favorite titles, ever, “The Whores Hustle and the Hustlers Whore.”  I dug it!

So sorry that I waited so long, but now that I have the “National Blog Posting Month” thing to do, then I guess I’ll have plenty to write about.  This is day #2, so we’ll see how it goes.

Salutations™!!  Can you believe it!?  Two in two weeks.  Is this officially called a roll!?

First off, I spelled Hole exactly how I intended, it’s not spelled incorrectly. Speaking of which:

#460 – Live Through This by Hole.  If this had been 10 years ago, I’d have spit on it and called it shaming names and kicked it like a scoundrel dog.  I didn’t spit on this.  I also didn’t call it too many names.  There’s bad taste just from old memories but I’ve mostly brushed my teeth of that mess.  “Asking For It,” “Doll Parts,” and especially “Jennifer’s Body” are really well written songs.  Other than her screaming (a lot) this was a very listenable album. Creepy that it came out mere days after Kurt was found dead. Dug!

#459 – Golden Hits by The Drifters.  I have decided I’m not rating greatest hits albums.  The jury is still out on the live ones.  I think an album should be a collection of carefully sequenced songs, placed in an order to tell some kind of story, even if it’s not a concept album.  “Hits” albums are usually record company throw-togethers that were just what made them some money that they want to try and capitalize on.  So, even though I listened to it, for continuity sake and to be truthful in my listening experience, scratch it on a review.

Tumbleweed Connection – Elton John

#458 – Tumbleweed Connection by Elton John.  When I first heard this a few years back, I didn’t really like the “Americana” Elton.  But upon a deeper listening, I really liked the album. I am sure that learning “Amoreena” to sing with the Vagabond Saints Society had a little something to do with it. Really not a bad song on the album. “Amoreena” is, of course, my favorite, but “Burn Down the Mission” is quite nice, too. Dug!

#457 – Z by My Morning Jacket.  I love synth music. I do.  From the beginning at “Wordless Chorus” there was an ’80s pop/1st wave quality about it and I really like that.  Harmonies are big happenings with me and this album is loaded with them.  Back to guitar jangle on the second song, “It Beats For You,” and that is a great thing.  Atmospheric in nature, the album keeps a trip-minded path that makes it very listenable.  Fun stuff.  I saw MMJ live in GSO with my fiance, the BCPF, at the horrible sounding War Memorial Auditorium and it sounded like a cluster mess.  This is great.  DUG!

#456 – Here, My Dear by Marvin Gaye.  When researching this album (especially after listening to it and wondering: er…?), I found out about MG’s divorce from the boss’s sister.  Being that he didn’t want to pay the requested “palimony” that she was seeking to support their son, MG’s attorney pretty much got him to agree to give a large amount of royalties from his next album’s sales to her and be done with it.  Listening back on the album, it’s a weird piece of work.  Not at all bad, but not the feel good Marvin we came to know and love.  Read the song titles, if nothing else: “You Can Leave, But It’s Going to Cost You,” or the title track.  One listen and you can tell he’s not too happy, but he gives it all he can because he wants it to be right for his fans.  I dug it but wouldn’t really want to own it, or even listen again.

#455 – How Will the Wolf Survive? by Los Lobos.  Tex-Mex-styled C&W/rockabilly/jangly-pop  at its best.  It was a pleasure listening to the album, although nothing really stood out mightily.  The song “Will the Wolf Survive” I used as a theme interstitial on the Camel City Dispatch News Hour a month ago.  Dug.

#454 – Love It to Death by Alice Cooper.  I know I should like Alice more.  I know it. I know it.  I appreciate his antics, I saw him live once and while it wasn’t KISS, it was still good.  I just can’t get into his music.  I want to. I really, really do.  That being said, this wasn’t a bad listen, at all!  “I’m Eighteen” is a classic Alice tune and it’s pretty cool.  I liked the chorus of “Caught in a Dream” a good bit, too.  The sassy qualities of “Hallowed Be My Name” is endearing.  Toy pianos in rock always get me and no one plays the kiddie-creepy like Alice (listen to Welcome to My Nightmare).  Dug.

Strictly Business – EPMD

#453 – Strictly Business by EPMD.  “I Shot the Sherrif”… I mean, “Strictly Business” is fun.  I thought it reminded me a lot of Eric B and Rakim’s Paid in Full (which has to be in this list, somewhere).  Upon reading about it, it was called a “compliment” to it.  The time frame is right; the style is right; all is right.  And, it’s in a time that I liked what I heard in this genre.  Tight beats and fun samples (and yes, I hated sampling, then… still do mostly; this is tastefully done), not too harsh on the lyrical content and good stuff to hear.  I liked it.  I’d own it, believe it or not. DUG!

#452 – John Prine by John Prine.  What does this world need with two Bob Dylans?  This sounded a lot like Dylan except not.  I don’t know. I found myself counting down until it was over (three more songs… two more songs… LAST song…).  There was nothing on this album that I really found memorable, other than the (gasp!) drug references.  I’m sure I’ll get reamed for that, but it is what it is.  Not a fan. Did not dig…

Back to Black – Amy Winehouse

#451 – Back to Black by Amy Winehouse.  What a waste! SO much talent and one of my favorite albums on this leg of the countdown.  This album was mesmerizing from track 2 on.  “Rehab” isn’t a bad song, but I think it’s the weakest link and could have been left off – if it weren’t so telling.  “You Know I’m No Good” is fantastic!  “Me & Mr. Jones” and her use of the word “f*ckery” is nothing shy of genius.  Her voice is so soulful and playful, yet you can almost hear the tragedy about to burst at the seams.  She could have been this generations Shirley Bassey, Ella Fitzgerald, or Etta James if not for her demons winning the losing fight.  Absolutely my fave on this segment of the list.

Some of the albums thus far have been throw-aways.  Even some of the ones that I liked I felt like some were forced upon us.  I don’t know how much I’ll go back to listen to some of it but there have been some real gems that have made me say “dayum!” more than once.  I’ve not started the next wave, yet. But, I’m on my way this week or next so, hopefully, I’ll be able to update in another two weeks… or less!

Salutations™!!!

It has been way too long, dear reader, I know this.  I know I can only apologize so many times, so I won’t.  I have done a lot of listening, but haven’t done a lot of writing.  I’ve been quite busy. Not an excuse – just a reason.  Anywhat! Let’s get back to the thick of things…

#470 – Radio by LL Cool J.  With all the rap/hip-hop that I’ve endured thus far (and am sure there are plenty of more coming) that I have loathed and maybe just misunderstood, I was quite happy to get back to some true “old school rap.”  I was a fan of old LL to begin with and being as this is as old LL Cool J you can get (at least as far as albums go), it’s pretty right on.  Now, this is nowhere near as good as Bigger and Deffer that will come out two years later, but it’s a start.  His voice is young – he was 18 – and his beats fresh, yo!.  Yeah, I just said that, white boy that I am.  Dug!

#469 – The Score by The Fugees.  Again, after all the baloney-hooey that I’ve had to endure, I was skeptical.  But, smiles again for this.  I LOVED the cover of “Killing Me Softy” the first time I heard it and it didn’t lose anything for me.  Some language things but the overall alt-rap vibe kind of quelled that.  Dug!

#468 – The Paul Butterfield Blues Band by The Paul Butterfield Blues Band.  Ok. Ok. Okay.  We all know I’m not a fan of blues music.  I’ve told you about how it physically makes me nauseous.  It truly does, I’m not being dramatic.  White boy blues isn’t a lot better, but it’s not quite as bad.  The most intriguing things about this album is the tragedy that lies within the band itself.  Take Elvin Bishop who scored a major hit with “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” with future Starship singer Mickey Thomas.  His ex-wife and daughter were murdered in what looked like a botched ransom scheme.  Then, Butterfield himself accidentally overdosing on morphine (probably more heroin) due to trying to alleviate peritonitis. This all happened after this album, I got a bit sidetracked.  I do love the title “Thank You Mr. Poohbah,” so that’s some consolation.  Meh…

Tunnel of Love – Bruce Springsteen

#467 – Tunnel of Love by Bruce Springsteen. A dapper looking Bruce adorns the cover of this little brother of Born in the USA.  I’ve always voiced my want to dislike Bruce.  I want to.  I don’t know why.  But, thanks to a good friend, Beth, I can’t seem to jump over that hate cliff.  I thought this was a really good album.  Really good.  Now, I will say that Side Two is the better of the two.  Disclaimer: I listened to streaming, not LP, but I did do research.  Starting with the title track, which has some really odd Expose sounding intro (Expose being the girl group from the late 80s), to “Brilliant Disguise” and “One Step Up.”  That’s just some great song writing right there.  And yep, I said it.  LOVED IT!

A Rush of Blood to the Head – Coldplay

#466 – A Rush of Blood to the Head by Coldplay.  I don’t care of the negative connotations that come with being a Coldplay fan. I said it, I am a Coldplay fan.  This is my second favorite Coldplay album (the first being Parachutes).  There are many great songs on this disc.  My faves being “Clocks,” “The Scientist,” “God Put a Smile Upon Your Face,” “Politik,” and “Amsterdam.”  Their next album, and truly all their subsequent albums, lacked the same feeling that the first two did.  I liked Viva la Vida but it didn’t touch this and certainly didn’t touch Parachutes. LOVED IT!

#465 – 69 Love Songs by Magnetic Fields.  Ok, so I will have to come back to this one.  I’ll admit to being an idiot. I went to Rhapsody, the awesome locale of all my RS500 needs (as long as the disc(s) are available there – only missed 3 so far), and saw the album that matched the album cover on the RS website.  I thought “69” was just a clever, or not, title for the 23 tracks on the FIRST disc.  So, in writing this and revisiting them, I realized, “hey! Wait! There are others…” including a full set all at once. I’m going back to listen to the rest of it…  I’ll say it, I’m a dumbass.  Tune in later for this one.

Hysteria – Def Leppard

#464 – Hysteria by Def Leppard. I was 17 going on 18 when this album came out.  My high school years were summed up around that time.  The entire first side (thinking of the cassette copy I wore out) was awesome with the screaming guitar of “Women” to the processed drums of “Rocket” to the bright sounds of “Animal” and the dark torture of “Love Bites” and the saccharine-flavor of “Pour Some Sugar On Me” to the clever play on words of “Armageddon It.”  Side one of this album by the “World’s Most Cursed Band” really did rock my 17-year old behind! “Gods of War” had one of the coolest, yet simplest basslines of my youth.  The title track was the best thing on Side Two for me.  Side One plus two songs on Side Two makes a damn fine album.  The rest of the songs are ok, but nothing that knocks me over. DUG IT!

#463 – Heaven Up Here by Echo & The Bunnymen.  I never knew my love of Echo until the last little bit.  I loved the “hits” that I hear on Sirius/XM First Wave but didn’t know about the full depth of the band.  This wasn’t chock-full of hits but it did have some great songs like “Over the Wall” and “A Promise.”  The title track wasn’t bad, either. Dug it.

R.E.M._-_Document

#462 – Document by R.E.M. I have always had a love/hate relationship with R.E.M.  I never wanted to like them.  I was a hairband guy! A rocker! I couldn’t like that “alternative shite” or some baloney that my friends and I fed ourselves at the time.  This album marked their first foray into kickass mainstream.  I don’t really have anything negative that I can say.  I will fully admit that I loved listening to it.  It’s always fun to watch people attempt “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” in karaoke.  I did see my good friend Patrick Ferguson pull it off with his awesome trio, Vel Indica.  My first exposure to R.E.M, at all, was “The One I Love.”  “Oddfellows Local 151” and “Finest Worksong” are other faves on here.  Dug!!

#461 – Metal Box/Second Edition by Public Image, Ltd (PiL).  Um… Well… I don’t know, er…  This is some whacky shite, really.  I had to do some research to figure out that although it was originally called Metal Box it was reissued (and what Rhapsody had) as Second Edition in 1980.  I wonder, or should I say suppose, that this is naming follow through of First Issue, which I half-expected to be named something else originally. The bass work is great! Jah Wobble is a great bassist.  John Lydon is a weirdo, though.  I mean that endearingly, really.  I didn’t dislike listening to it.  I won’t say it was a blast but it certainly didn’t suck.  I’m giving it a middle-of-the-road-ish: Dug? (like Ron Burgundy: questioningly)

I have to say that I think this was my favorite group so-far, of the journey.  Other than Butterfield and the jury still being out on Magnetic Fields, I really liked (or didn’t mind) everything else.  I’ve listened through the next batch already.  I’ll get those out soon.  I promise.
