Salutations™!!

If you happen to find yourself in Greensboro tonight or feel like a leisurely drive to Greensboro, then consider stopping by the Carolina Theatre and coming up to the Crown to see Abigail Dowd, new band Gasket Hawkins and The Silver Alerts.

The festivities start at 7pm and shouldn’t run too awfully late, that way everyone is home and sound so you can get up and do your St. Patty’s thing in the morning. May I suggest Finnigan’s Wake? They’ll be open from 7am until 2am, with breakfast, lunch, dinner, beverages, and entertainment all day long. I believe they will be doing “the wake” twice during the course of the day.

But, I digress.

The Silver Alerts is Clay Howard (of course), Corkey McClellan, Aaron Burkey, Doug Davis (yes that Doug Davis) and some fat guy with a big silver beard. We’ll be doing a bit of Clay Howard music, which is never a bad thing.

Gasket Hawkins is Doug Davis’ new musical project.

Abigail Dowd is a young singer=songwriter who along with Jason Duff play some beautiful music. You’ll want to see this.

So, again, come on out to Carolina Theatre tonight. It’s located at 310 S Greene Street in Greensboro. And, if you’re wondering, Finnigan’s Wake is located at 620 N. Trade Street in WSNC. Hopefully, I’ll see you at one of the places.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

My friend Aaron Burkey posted this on Facebook. I thought it was funny. I have no idea where it came from and, frankly, I’m too lazy to look it up. It’s Friday. And, since I can use anything as a blog post… This is what I did with it.

Salutations™!!Happy-Memorial-Day-2

Memorial Day, not to be confused with Veterans Day, is the day to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in our country’s military. We have the freedom to write our blogs, stand up and make stupid and asinine remarks on social media about any and every single thing, hold our kids and families at night, eat where and when we want because of their sacrifice. Positive vibes and happy thoughts to the families who have lost someone or holds the memories of a long-lost loved one who may have.

While we’re mostly all off today to reflect on that, The Silver Alerts will be playing today at Bailey Park for the Gears and Guitar event that is happening. It will be Clay, Corky, Doug, Burkey and me today! It’s going to be hot and it’s going to be sunny. Bring your lawn chairs and have a great time, The Plaids (also the Silver Alerts minus Clay and me, add Sexy Steve) will be playing there as well. Oh and because the cycling event is happening around town, expect delays.

I know this post is short, but, it’s a holiday for me, too!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Tonight, I’ll be hosting the Friday Night Music Club at Bull’s Tavern. Special guests for the show will be Clay Howard and James Vincent Carroll. Our house band includes Aaron 15873515_1428930590450353_2994663030644474219_nBurkey (Plaids), Jerry Chapman (Mediocre Bad Guys, Vagabond Saints’ Society), Doug Davis (Plaids, Mediocre Bad Guys, Vagabond Saints’ Society), and Corky McClellan (Plaids, Mediocre Bad Guys, Vagabond Saints’ Society). With guests like Clay and James, you can safely assume that the program for this show is going to skew heavily in the direction of rock ‘n roll. You may see me get involved in the music part, too. We’re also very happy to have comedians Cabell Wilkinson and Zo Myers on board!
There is NO cover for this event! Donation buckets will be available for our charity for the evening, Triad Musicians Matter, and we do encourage you to contribute what you can. Come on out, the fun starts at 10pm, but there’ll be plenty to do before. Support Bull’s Tavern, support local musicians and support Triad Musicians Matter.
Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Tonight is the night! I will be serving as fill-in bass player for The Silver Alerts, Clay Howard’s backing band, tonight. This will happen at The Crown at the Carolina Theater in Greensboro. Doors open at 7:30 and the show will be around 8pm, I think. I can’t remember what it was last time.

I’ll be joining Clay, Doug Davis, Corky McClellan and Aaron Burkey as the Silver Alerts. 12039340_10153711344677835_6636014684933672217_nThere are two other bands playing the warm-up spots: Matty Sheets & the Cold Rollers and Doug Davis (yes, that Doug Davis) & the Solid Citizens. Due to the names of the bands, this is being called “The Ampersand Show.”

It’s a short post this week as I’m trying to fight off a cold in favor of putting on a good show tonight and I’m resting up. So, I apologize if it’s shorter than you’re expecting. Or, you’re welcome if you’re tired of my usual ramblings. Hopefully, we’ll see you tonight.

Salutations™!!

I’ve been learning songs on the bass guitar for the first time in three and a half years. I’ve learned songs lyrically over the last several years for Vagabond Saints Society but I can do that while driving around or sitting behind a computer or whatever. While I can listen to songs and get the general feel of the bass and feel of the song in general doing all that, I can’t actually play the songs in my car.

I have a TASCAM bass trainer, which is both a savior and a detriment. The big positive: it allows me to listen to the songs, play along and hear both signals at the same time. Listening to a CD player or whatever, and listening to your bass through an amp, both in the open air lets the sound wander and I need them all in one spot. One problem is that my basses (at least the ones that I plan on playing this week) have active pickups. For those who don’t know, active pickups are pickups that tend to have a much higher output than most passive pickups. I 1asilveractually play lightly and prefer to have the active pickups pump my overall sound without having to alter my playing style. These active pickups, especially since I’m using Bartolini pickups in one of them, they tend to really, really overdrive the machine, it can’t handle the signal without a lot of distortion. I can turn down the “input” but it certainly diminishes the balance. I can turn up the trainer but again, signal imbalance is distracting. It’s a constant struggle. A good and evil if you will.

Another dilemma I have is whether or not to use the 5-string. It’s the one that has Bartolinis. I know I’m going to use my Spector, it’s my favorite bass that I have. It’s the most balanced bass I have, sound, feel, weight, everything. I have a couple of Traben basses that are pretty disappointing considering what I paid for them. They look great. However, it’s hard to hear “looking cool.” I may need to change the 9-volt battery on the one, I don’t know. I’ll test it. I’m just torn. Not actively playing bass in so long has basically put me “out of practice.”

So, what am I learning these songs for? On Friday, I’ll be playing with some of my very good friends: Clay Howard, Doug Davis, Corky McClellan and Aaron Burkey known as Clay Howard and the Silver Alerts. Usually, Jerry Chapman would be playing with him but Jerry is out of town and can’t be there. I was asked to fill in. So, here we go. Also on the card is Doug Davis and the Solid Citizens and Luxuriant Sedans. Woo hoo!  It should be a good show. I hope I don’t mess it up for everyone. My overall confidence has grown over the last few weeks. I used to have no problem standing my own ground on bass. I’m actually a better bass player than anything else I do musically, but I’m so way out of practice being one. I’ll do fine. In fact, I’m sure I’ll kick butt, but I just gotta get up there and do it.

So if you’re looking for something cool to see and hear, then head on down to the Crown at Carolina Theater, this Friday, September 25. The show starts at 7pm (or so they say). Come listen and support great local music. Stop by and say hey. I look forward to seeing you. You’ll see the fruits of my bass learning labors. It will definitely be worth it.

Last night I got to share the stage with some fantastic singers for the Because the Night: Bruce Springsteen by Vagabond Saints Society for the Summer on Trade concert series presented by the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership. The Vagabond Saints Society core band, on this evening, was Doug Davis, Jerry Chapman, Randall Johnson, Bob Stitcher, Aaron Burkey, Neal Goode, Steve Blake and Susan Terry. The guest singers were (scheduled) Patrick Ferguson of Vel Indica, Richard Boyd of Bo Stevens, Clay Howard of Clay Howard, Jeffrey Dean Foster, Darrell Hoots of Knuckles Deep and myself. In addition, a few bonus singers showed up and were invited on stage. Original VSS member and former Winston-Salem resident, Mitchell Snow came on and sang “Adam Raised a Cain” while local business dude (and honorary mayor of the Arts District (my designation)) Brian Cole sang “Glory Days.”

As always it is an honor to share the stage with so much talent and it humbles me to be included in the “Society.” I love these guys and I’d consider them some of my best musical (and in life) buddies. Thank you all and the 2000 or so people that watched for a great night!
