After breakfast, The BCPF and I went and voted and then got down to Underdog Records and it was a beautiful day to be out and to be in my favorite store! Here’s what we got:

  • The Coral – Magic And Medicine — I have this on CD and when I got it many, many years ago, I didn’t care for it and didn’t give it another listen. Now that my tastes have changed and my mind has opened, I decided to give it another try and The BCPF and I both agreed that it was quite a fabulous listen. Plus, whilst it was brand new, it was in the “clearance bin” and we got it for less than $13. Win-win!
  • George Harrison – Somewhere In England — The first album that George recorded after John Lennon’s death and the song “All Those Years Ago” was written about and for Lennon. The whole album is great and we enjoyed listening to it. VG+
  • Earth, Wind & Fire – I Am —  Featuring the singles “Boogie Wonderland” with The Emotions and “After the Love Has Gone,” this was a great listen. We enjoyed it. It was in VG++.
  • Richie Havens – The End Of The Beginning — I honestly don’t know much about the album and it’s the only one of the ones we got yesterday that we didn’t listen to. VG+
  • A Flock Of Seagulls – The Story Of A Young Heart — Great synth pop from the mid-eighties. It was a fun listen but really, not a lot of memorable tunes. VG++

We also got Crosby, Stills & Nash – CSN but it was a replacement for one we got from the $1 bin this past July. This one is in VG+ shape and the cover actually has the picture which was missing from our other copy.

It was a small haul but it was a decent one. Underdog Records is preparing for their anniversary which will entail live entertainment and some specials but the fun goes on all the time at Underdog. You don’t need “special specials” to get good deals. Jonathan always has good stuff waiting for you at prices you won’t find anywhere else. Anywhere. Listen to the latest episode of The Less Desirables to hear what this week’s TLD/Underdog special is.

I use Discogs to keep track of what albums I have in case I look to purchase any albums. It’s also good for CD collections, too.

Until tomorrow, keep spinning…

Salutations™!!

Yesterday was such a beautiful day and it was really relaxed since The BCPF and I didn’t have to camp out for the hectic scene that was Record Store Day. We walked, ate at Mary’s Gourmet Diner, bought records at Underdog Records, listened to records, and ate at Willows Bistro before getting home before 10:20p. A good day. Here’s our haul:

  • Okkervil River – In The Rainbow Rain – When I make the commercials for Underdog Records on Wednesdays, I try to incorporate some of the music that is being released in said commercial to give a little taste (observing ‘fair use’ rules, of course) and this was one that I used. I liked it and it sounded like something The BCPF would like. I’m always on the lookout for new stuff she may like. New.
  • The Rolling Stones – Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out – A live Rolling Stones album that was released originally about two and a half months before I was born. This, however, is the 1986 reissue. It was considered to be an audiophile copy at that time. This is in NM condition.
  • Weezer – Pacific Daydream – The latest album by Weezer that was released around Halloween last year. This is a really good album. It was fun to listen to. NM.
  • Tim Curry – Simplicity – The last of Tim Curry’s solo albums, this one from 1981. I liked listening to the other one I have, Fearless, even if it wasn’t great it was fun. I hope this one is. VG++.
  • A Flock Of Seagulls – A Flock Of Seagulls – The eponymous debut album featuring what is probably their most famous song “I Ran (So Far Away)” as well as “Space Age Love Song.” It was in great shape and I can’t wait to listen to it. VG++.
  • Frank Sinatra – Strangers In The Night – $1 bin find that we just couldn’t pass on. I love me some “Ol’ Blue Eyes” and here it was in VG shape.
  • Sinatra – Basie – Sinatra-Basie (An Historic Musical First) – Another $1 bin find for the same reasons above. Plus, it was the first time Frankie and Count Basie recorded together. VG.
  • Mungo Jerry – Mungo Jerry – The listing on Wikipedia shows no trace of “In the Summertime” but the copy I have does. I know it was released as a single the same year as this, so I am thinking that it was an album-independent single that did well and any subsequent releases of the album included it. That’s what I have, I think. It’s in VG condition and was a $1 bin find.

So, here, I have to say when I played in GSO on Friday, we went to another record store, CFBG Records. Jonathan says we weren’t cheating on him but I feel like we were. But, we got some cool stuff, even if the prices were crazy expensive for used stuff. I guess we’re just spoiled by Jonathan. Here’s that haul:

  • The Byrds – Younger Than Yesterday – #127 on the RS List and containing one of my favorite Byrds (well, Dylan) songs, “My Back Pages.” It’s in VG++ condition.
  • The Fixx – Phantoms – I have grown to love The Fixx and I was excited to find this here (well, The BCPF found it). VG+.
  • Bob Dylan – Blood On The Tracks – #16 on the RS List (I need five to finish the top 25). From what I remember I didn’t much care for it, but The BCPF is a sucker for Dylan. Plus, I needed it for the list. VG+.
  • INXS – Listen Like Thieves – The INXS album with “What You Need,” the title tune and “This Time.” Very excited about it. VG+.
  • Midnight Oil – Diesel And Dust – The one with “Beds Are Burning” on it. We got that one for free. There is a long scratch all the way across the first side but I’m hoping it will still play. If not, I will use it as the first of my vinyl repair experiment that I plan on doing. I’ll say VG, but that may not be true.

So, a pretty good haul and we’re excited about it. Lots of good stuff in there. Jonathan is back in the saddle after getting caught up from Record Store Day. So, follow Underdog Records on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook and you’ll see what he is putting out each day. They’re open Tuesday to Saturday, 11a to 7p. Also, you can shop during off-hours by visiting their website.

Discogs lets me keep up with my collection so I don’t buy a lot of multiples and its Marketplace lets me find those hard-to-get items that Jonathan just never sees come through. It’s fun.

Until tomorrow, happy listening…

Yesterday was a cold, snotty, sleety, crappy-weathered day. But, I had my best gal and we had each other to keep warm and enjoy some record listening. That means, of course, that we went by Underdog Records! And, here is what we got:

  • The Decemberists – I’ll Be Your Girl – The BCPF is a huge fan of The Decemberists and this was their latest release, which came out last week but by the time we got there, Jonathan was already sold out. He got replacements, though, and this is the fruits of that.
  • Dire Straits – Brothers In Arms – This is my favorite Dire Straits album. It was the first I ever heard of them in 1985 when “Money for Nothing” came out. A few things to note about this album. It was one of the first to be recorded, mixed and mastered digitally (anyone else remember the DDD on CDs?). It was also the first to sell one million copies and the first to outsell its LP version. This is an original UK pressing. Another thing to know about the LP version is that the CD and cassette copies had longer versions of every song on the first side except “Walk of Life,” which should have been the one truncated. Because of the digital media and almost endless length capabilities of cassettes, they didn’t have to worry about constraints whereas the LP certainly did. “So Far Away,” “Money for Nothing,” “Your Latest Trick” and “Why Worry” were all cut short on the LP. That sucks especially for “Your Latest Trick” as it truncates that awesome sax solo. But, the lush sound of vinyl is hard to ignore. VG+.
  • Built To Spill – Untethered Moon – Another band that The BCPF is a huge fan of. We even saw them in concert in Carrboro a few years at Cat’s Cradle. VG++.
  • The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Rostal & Schaefer, Ron Goodwin – The Beatles Concerto – Orchestral Beatles, what could be better? Not a lot. VG+.
  • John Barry – Somewhere In Time (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) – I really dig John Barry, I mean, I am a James Bond fan (he scored 11 of the films). I had the sheet music to this when I was younger. VG+.
  • Gary Numan – The Pleasure Principle – Yep, the “Cars” album. The whole album is pretty much “Cars” in different forms. That’s an exaggeration but that’s what I kept saying to myself. It’s a good album, though. VG.
  • Mozart: Quartetto Italiano – Six String Quartets Dedicated To Haydn – 3xLP set. The box is a little frayed but the vinyl is NM!
  • A Flock Of Seagulls – Listen – Their second album that had some hits. VG+.
  • Scorpions – Love At First Sting – The first stuff I ever heard from them. “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” which I’ve played in several bands. “Hurricane” was the first song I ever played in a band in front of a crowd. So, that means something to me. VG/VG-.
  • Brahms – The Fine Arts Quartet – Quartet In C Minor, Opus 51, No. 1 / Quartet In A Minor, Opus 51, No. 2 – VG+.
  • Rickie Lee Jones – Rickie Lee Jones – This is an awesome album. RLJ has tremendous talent and what a great voice. It was fun to listen to. VG++.
  • Pete Townshend – All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes – I never know what to expect from Pete. He changes styles and theme like the wind and it’s up and down. So, it was there, in good shape (VG+) and a good price. So, I got it.
  • Various – Songbird – VG+ addition to my K-Tel collection featuring artists like Air Supply, Poco and ABBA. It’s soft rock stuffs.
  • The Stills-Young Band – Long May You Run – Another reiteration of the whole CSNY family tree. VG.
  • Roberta Flack – First Take – Adding another to the Roberta Flack discography collection, this being her debut, from the $1 bin. VG. And…
  • Roberta Flack – Chapter Two – Her second album. Also VG and also $1.
  • François Couperin, L’Ensemble Alarius De Bruxelles – Les Nations – VG condition and $1 bin find.
  • Judy Collins – Living – VG $1 bin find.
  • Various – The Original Sounds Of Broadway, Limited Edition – 4xLP of Broadway classics performed by original casts. VG+ and $1 bin find.

So, a pretty good haul. I was especially excited about the Dire Straits album even with the truncated first side. That and the Rickie Lee Jones were worth the whole thing. Good stuff.

New to vinyl? Want to get into vinyl? Returning to vinyl? Don’t go spend a ton of money on brand new equipment when you can get quality used stuff from Jonathan at Underdog Records. If you decide you want to get deeper into the “lifestyle” then you can go spend big bucks. But, don’t just jump in. My two cents.

Discogs is also a great way to catalog your collection, see your friends’ collections and even purchase used and new vinyl in the marketplace. It’s a great site and a great resource.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
