Salutations™!!

©Up Records/Warner Bros

The BCPF and I started our day at Clementine’s to have some fantastic breakfast. We then headed over to Underdog Records, found some good stuff and came home for some listening. Here’s the haul:

Poison – Look What The Cat Dragged In — Yeah, I know it’s cheesy and truth be known it doesn’t hold up well. I know a lot of people hate Bret Michael’s voice. Some hate the glam aspect, because let’s face it, when you think of glam metal/hair bands, who do you think of first? Probably Poison. But, here’s the thing. It came out at a time where I was just getting introduced to a whole different world of music, thanks to me finally getting MTV. So, it was new to me. Here’s the thing. I thought it was and I still think it is fun. It’s not a masterpiece and it didn’t or doesn’t have to be. I just enjoyed listening to it. And, that’s all that matters. It’s a “club edition” but in EX. It was well taken care of.

The Love Language – Ruby Red — This is The BCPF’s jam. Well, maybe not this band per se, but they’re signed to Merge Records and just about everything Merge puts out is her jam. This band is basically Stuart McLamb and is from Raleigh, NC. To me, it sounds like Superchunk but with a singer that can stay on key. No offense Mac McCaughan. It’s a good listen. New.

Julie London – Around Midnight — Jazz standards from the singer/actress. Julie London was married to Jack Webb of Dragnet fame. She also had a recurring role on the medical drama Emergency! She sometimes smoked three packs of cigs a day. I haven’t heard this yet but it’s bound to fantastic! No sarcasm there, either. This is original pressing of the stereo mix. It was released the same year (but after) as the mono mix. VG.

George Harrison – Brainwashed — This is the twelfth and final studio album by the ex-Beatle. It was released posthumously in 2002, almost a year after his death at age 58 (just eight years older than I am right now, wow…), and 15 years after his previous studio album, Cloud Nine. Recordings began over a decade before Harrison’s death but were repeatedly delayed. The album’s overdubs were completed by his son Dhani, session drummer Jim Keltner, and longtime friend and collaborator Jeff Lynne, according to Wikipedia. It was a great listen and “Marwa Blues” is a great instrumental track. It was nominated for Grammys. NM.

Built To Spill – Keep It Like A Secret — The BCPF and I have seen this band live together. She swears there’s something different about this than her CD copy. I believe her, but I find no evidence of that online anywhere. The one difference I see is that there is a bonus track on this vinyl version, which is a reissue and split to 2×LP to enhance the audible experience. I liked it. It’s good stuff. New.

Jonathan had a steady stream of customers yesterday. Things look to be picking up. Only 6 people are allowed in the store at one time, and while we didn’t see that yesterday, we have seen people waiting to get in over the last few weeks. I love that rock/hard rock/heavy metal folks are selling their collections to Jonathan. Most of it is black/death metal, which I’m certainly not into, some of it is just good straight-ahead rock! I love it. Underdog Records is open Thursday-Saturday from 11a-7p and Jonathan does deliveries and store pickups by appointment only Monday-Wednesday. You can shop for new vinyl, day or night, 24/7 by visiting the Underdog Records website. Follow him on social media, especially Instagram, to see what he had just acquired and is putting out for purchase! Use Discogs to keep track of your collection. You won’t be sorry!

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Salutations™!!

Tomorrow is the 50th anniversary of Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together album. Somehow not on the RS List, even though there are two other studio albums and one greatest hits from him on that list. Hmmm… Anywhat! Here’s the cover I picked today. I thought about doing the Obama version but that wasn’t a full version. Enjoy!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Well, Dear Reader, today was the doctor’s appointment. The one I have obsessed over this week, on this blog. I braced myself for the diagnosis of pre-diabetes. And, what I said earlier this week was true: there are other factors and I’m no doctor and all that. It turns out that my glucose reading could have been something I had eaten or drunk the day or even days before my bloodwork was done. They weren’t at all concerned with that. My A1Cs were perfectly fine and that’s what counts toward diabetes. So, whew! on that, right?

©Tim Liedtke / Verywell

But, I’m not out of the woods, just yet. There were two factors that we had to talk about. My triglycerides are at 238. The standard range is 0-149. So, I’m well over that. The other thing is my weight. I am the heaviest I’ve ever been right now. I weighed in at 321. Three. Hundred. Twenty. One. Pounds. Jeez o’Pete. So, these are the focus, now. I don’t think my regiment will change.

When I told my doctor of the plan that Kristen Norton of Well Balanced Nutrition and I had agreed upon, the same schedule I talked about earlier this week, here, he was very excited and happy with it. A couple of things specifically. He loved the idea of limiting the majority of the simple carbs (the white bread, pizza crust, french fries, etc.) and introducing more complex carbs (brown rice, potatoes with skins, beans, etc.) and a cupped handful of veggies. He was also very high on the 12-hour fast and increasing it over time. I have been able to work with that this week. It’s not bad at all. Pretty easy. Yesterday alone I was over 14 hours, which I broke the fast with a small cobb salad and a cup of chili (with black beans!). Dinner last night had seafood, corn and potatoes with skins. Sure, I stole a couple of bites of The BCPF’s lobster tater tots but it wasn’t a whole meal.

The last thing the doc was happy about was how much I’ve walked already this week. Not necessarily the distance but the intensity and frequency. I promised him and the nurse that I was going to be under 300lbs the next time I stepped on that scale. So, I need to promise myself that too and somehow work in a streak. Streaks somehow keep me accountable and I guess that’s what I will have to do.

So, there you have it, Dear Reader. I just wanted to update you on how relieved I was to not be diabetic but also that I’m not out of the woods and I am working to a healthier me. Oh! And I was up at 645a and went for my walk before I did anything else. My watch didn’t record jack so I don’t know how many steps I got, but the graph shows me more than the day before. It was cold, y’all.

Salutations™!!

Tomorrow is the 36th anniversary of Yello’s Stella. It contains their biggest hit, “Oh Yeah.” We all know it better as that funky and fun tune from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. I love synth music so I enjoy this tune and others like it. I couldn’t find anything that made sense as far as covers go, so I decided to do this instead. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

Today is the 40th anniversary of the US release of the soundtrack to Flash Gordon from Queen. Now, I understand the film was probably crap to some of you, but to me, I fell in love with it because I am a fantasy/sci fi fan. I dig it. Plus, I love Queen so… this is a great version!

And, I walked almost 3000 steps today. Again, not 6000 that my watch says I should be doing, but a start. That’s three days in a row. And it’s strong walking for that bit. It takes me around 13 minutes or so. And, while I had to steer around some blocks, I think I ate well today, too. Good for me!

Health, health and wellness, healthy eating, Kristen Norton, Life, Well Balanced Nutrition

Salutations™!!

So, I had my meeting with my friend Kristen Norton today. Kristen, as I told you yesterday, is with Well Balanced Nutrition and from my health things that I either am reading too much into, not enough into, or just because I need to, I think we have a plan that I can live with! Below is what we came up with for me, and remember this is just for me, what I can do (mentally/work-related) and what I’m willing to take up. Here we go:

©Kristen/Well Balanced Nutrition

1. Include veggies with my meals 3-4 times a week. Doable. As I’ve grown older, I have found a love, or at least a tolerance, for things I wouldn’t eat as a kid, even into young adulthood.

2. Minimize poor quality carbs (white bread, white rice, french fries, crackers, pizza crust, etc) when possible. Again, doable. I don’t care if I have white bread (I can get other buns for my burgers), fries, crackers, etc. The pizza crust will be harder. But, it’s up to me to adapt. I won’t do cauliflower crusts and stuff like that. I don’t want imitation food, even when made from other food.

3. Choose a cupped handful (or 2) of fiber-rich carbohydrates like potatoes w/ skin, beans, corn, peas, or whole grains. Now we’re talking. I like potatoes with skin. We had baked potatoes last week, twice, and I eat it all, skins and everything. Another long ramp to where I started, I now like beans. I will find beans. I never thought I’d say that. I like corn and peas and I love whole grain things.

4. Start small cause you’ll eat it all. On the Hunger Scale: aim to stop eating when you still feel a bit neutral 5-6, so you end up at a 6-7. I’m not going to share what all the numbers mean because that’s Kristen’s thing. But, let’s just say that I stop before I’m miserable. I have to allow my body to adjust to just eating. I can’t do much about how fast I eat, but I can stop and let my brain catch up with my stomach. In the past, it’s always been “all I see” and not “all I need.” Just because it’s in front of me, just because I paid for it, doesn’t mean I have to eat all of it. If possible, I will get a to go container, although that’s a whole other phobia I have to work on internally.

5. Consider at least a 12-hour fast overnight and see if you can stretch it to 13, 14 then 15… Going gradual can ensure you don’t get so hungry you want to overeat for your first meal. I am pretty okay with this one. I mean, some nights, according to my work load/schedule, I may not get to eat until 8p. That’s not great because your metabolism slows down once the sun goes down. But, sometimes it can’t be helped. So, if I don’t get to eat until 8p, then I don’t eat until after 8a. That’s okay, though, I don’t usually eat before 1030a or so, so at 12 hours, that’s easy. I am not a big midnight snack person, other than peanut butter. I will eat that, so I have to train not to have that spoonful at midnight. That’s okay, though. I can do it.

That’s my “plan.” Kristen is amazing and had a lot of questions and listened to my excuses and reasons why I can’t. Which, not that I think about it, I didn’t have a lot of reasons as to “can’t.” I had more why I “hadn’ts” if that’s a word. I am totally into being here and doing what I can to make it better. I am into addition, not subtraction. It’s not what I have to do without, it’s about what I can add. She was awesome walking me through that. She wasn’t scary. She didn’t take my favorite things away. She tried to steer me to better choices. So far, I’m okay with all of that. Thank you, Kristen!

If you’d like your own consultation with Kristen, or just want to know more about what she and her company, Well Balanced Nutrition are about, visit this page. Tell her that The Podfather sent you!

Oh, and I walked good bit today. I walked over to my mother’s house which is about a ¼ mile and then back, so ½ mile. Then, I walked in my circular driveway until I was well over 2000 steps. I ended up around 4700 or so for the day. I was proud of it. I have to work my way up.

Salutations™!!

I haven’t ever made any bones about the fact that I’m slightly overweight. I’ll pause while you all laugh your tails off. I can totally take the “slightly” off that. I am overweight. Not only that, I’m obese. Morbidly so. I’m 6″-6’1″ or so and at about 315 lbs. I say about because I haven’t weighed myself in the last bit because… why, really?

©US PRIG

Last week, I had my blood work done for my semi-yearly doctor’s appointment. I got my results back almost immediately. I looked through the results and everything looked mostly good but I noticed my glucose levels were above 99. Anything above 99 is in the range of “pre diabetes.” That kind of scared me. I will tell you, I sit at 105 on the levels. It’s still low on the range but also, still over 99. Now, the caveat here, I haven’t talked with my doctor, yet. I have an appointment on Thursday afternoon.

I have not been diagnosed as pre-diabetic. I know that I am not a doctor and me reading these results is dangerous for self-diagnosis. There are probably other factors that come into play. But, I also know that where I sit, overall, it won’t hurt to fix some of these things regardless of the outcome or contingency of diagnosis.

I can’t afford, neither in my job nor in mental capacity, to go on a restrictive diet. What I need is direction and support. So, I have an appointment tomorrow with my very own licensed nutritionist and wellness coach, Kristen Norton with Well Balanced Nutrition. I’m hoping she can work me through my fears about eating healthy and get me moving in the right direction.

This past Saturday, the BCPF and I walked a lap around our compound. This morning, I walked it by myself. I walked it briskly and other than making sure I wasn’t going to pass out, I didn’t really stop until I completed that lap. That lap equals about a half-mile. It was rough but it’s a start. Again, I’m ~315 and more than that to start with would be silly anyway.

So, I’ll let you know what Kristen and I talk about when that happens and I’ll keep you informed on my progress. But, I want to be here and this isn’t a “resolution.” This has to be a choice. I have to convince myself that this is my idea and I’m not being forced into it. Wish me luck, and I apologize up front for the “health” updates.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

The BCPF and I got off to a late start yesterday and finally made it to Underdog Records, which was jumpin’, by the way. We bought our four records and went and had some delicious brunch at a new place in town called Clementine’s Gourmet Toast and Juice Bar. Check out The Man Who Ate the Town’s IG for more on that. Here’s the haul:

©Music For Nations/Roadrunner

Genesis – A Trick Of The Tail — This is the seventh studio album by the band. It was released in January 1976 and was the first album to feature drummer Phil Collins as lead vocalist following the departure of Peter Gabriel. It did quite well in the UK and U.S., reaching No. 3 and No. 31 respectively. As I have stated so many times, I have a love/don’t care attitude with the Genesis brand. I love Peter Gabriel. I really like Phil Collins-led Genesis. I do not like Genesis with Peter Gabriel. This is a great album, still with Steve Hackett on guitar, and it sounds amazing! I had never had this on vinyl, only on CD after the remastering in 2007. Gatefold, 180g Yellow Vinyl. Rhino “Start Your Ear Off Right” Release. New.

Genesis – Duke — This is the tenth studio album by Genesis, released in March 1980. The band had been dormant for a bit. Phil Collins moved to Canada in an effort to salvage his failing marriage, while Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford recorded solo albums. Collins returned to the UK and wrote a a lot of material in the wake of the end of that relationship. Some of the tunes were used for Duke and some tunes were reworked for his first solo album, Face Value. This has two of my favorite Genesis songs, because I like hits: “Misunderstanding” and “Turn It On Again.” They were still doing their prog thing at this point but the radio-friendly hits (the ones that I like best) were starting. We had this but it was only in VG or so. 180g Vinyl – Rhino “Start Your Ear Off Right” Release. Limited edition of 3350.

Sebadoh – III — As you may have guessed, this was Sebadoh’s third album, released in 1991. Sebadoh, if you’re not aware is one of The BCPF’s favorite bands. At least her favorite kind of band. We have seen them live once together and I believe she had seen them before. She has a “secret” crush on Lou Barlow, one of the founders and lead singers and guitarists. He’s also part of Dinosaur Jr. and Folk Implosion, probably best known for their tune “Natural One.” She got to smell his hair at that Sebadoh show we saw. It’s classic Indie rock at it’s best and it was a good listen. NM.

Battleaxe – Burn This Town — One thing I noticed yesterday was that someone had come and off-loaded their entire heavy metal collection. Most of it was later-year death metal but this one interested me. I knew it was from 1983 and that it looked like that period. So, I said, let’s give it a try. I haven’t listened to it, yet but I asked Eugene and Bob (drummer from Heavens Sake who was all over this kind of music), both who are my 80s heavy metal gurus, so to speak and neither had heard of them. Bob did some digging and found this: They were a relatively obscure early 80’s NWOBHM band. Imagine Saxon, Motorhead, early Priest…with a raw, 70’s style sound. I heard like 3 songs and liked all three. Would’ve loved it when I was young. They just never caught on. I have recently gotten into the early Judas Priest so I’m looking forward to hearing this. Eugene said he would have overlooked it because the cover looked cheap, but there’s a reason for that. According to Wikipedia (the end-all/be-all of internet truths): …they entered the recording studio to make a demo called “Burn This Town”. In doing so, they garnered the attention of Roadrunner Records and the result was their first album… It went on to say: Once a deal had been struck with Roadrunner Records, the master tapes were sent to Roadrunner Records and the album title was agreed upon as Burn this Town. The record company asked the band for some concept ideas for the cover artwork, so the guys asked a friend and local artist Arthur Ball if he could come up with anything. He then produced the first Burn this Town cover artwork as it is now, but only as a rough proof drawing, and stated that, if it were approved by the record company, he would redraw the whole thing again to a much higher standard. However, when Roadrunner received the proof artwork for approval, they went ahead and pressed 2000 units for a worldwide release without the band’s consent. The original Burn this Town cover artwork is one of the most talked-about album covers in heavy metal history. The graphic looked amateurish, and the band worried what it might do to their reputation. However, the music did the talking and the album sold well. The band began developing a reputation in the region as a solid heavy metal outfit. The sleeve is VG/VG+ but the media is EX.

Sorry that last one was extra verbose, I just wanted to give what I knew about it and let on that I was really looking forward to hearing it.

Underdog Records is open Thursday-Saturday from 11a-7p and Jonathan does in-store pickups, curb service, and store-to-porch deliveries Monday-Wednesday. You can shop his new inventory, day or night, 24/7 by visiting the Underdog Records website. I know I keep teasing this, but there is news coming from Jonathan and me in the (hopefully) very near future. I use Discogs to track my collection, value the collection and sometimes buy for the collection.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’…

Salutations™!!

Today is the 45th anniversary of David Bowie’s Station To Station album. I’m not a huge fan of this era of Bowie. The Thin White Duke thing doesn’t do it for me. But, I like Bowie, so it made it. I am a sucker for looping. I have never tried it and think I’d just fall apart trying it, but I am fascinated by people who can. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

I woke up today with some good news. I got an email from a podcast charting service (that I am not subscribed to) and was told that Asylum – Tales from the Devereaux Diaries podcast, the one I do with my Kousins about KISS; part of The Less Desirables Network, had charted at #100 on Apple Podcasts in Sweden. I know it’s Sweden, but still…

Asylum – Tales from the Devereaux Diaries Podcast

But, that’s not all, we were also charted at #205 on the same chart here in the US! The chart is for Music Commentary. So, I take this as a win. In podcasting, while there are new ways popping up all the time, charts are pretty much the way to measure any kind of success. I am proud of all my podcasts as some of them are ranked on other podcast charts around the country but this is the highest we’ve been on any of them. So to Kousin Marvin and Kousin Gary… congrats to us!!

That is all. Give us a listen anywhere you find podcasts, give us a like, and if you’d be so kind, a rating. That helps us tremendously!
