Salutations™!!

Today is February 29 and being as we only see that date once every four years, it’s understandable that the pickings are slim to find releases for it. So, I picked one from yesterday, where I had to choose between U2’s War and this. Yesterday was the 36th anniversary of “Weird Al” Yankovic’s In 3-D. It was the general public’s first taste of Al. He had been big on the Doctor Demento show but if you happened to be in a market that didn’t have that syndicated, then you didn’t know much about it. This is his second studio album and it certainly was the first time I ever heard of him. My favorite album of his is the one that followed this, Dare To Be Stupid. Anywhat! In 3-D was produced by Rick Derringer and featured several great parodies but this was my favorite on the album and I would amaze the other schoolmates on the bus singing all the words. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

This week has been awesome and it has kicked my butt! I have more butt-kicking to do tomorrow, too. I came home after some early work and crashed. In fact, I took a bit of a nap and that’s very unlike me. So, today is the 37th anniversary of U2’s third album, War. #223 on the RS List. There was a lot to choose from on this album but I decided to go with this one and I decided that I liked hearing the real U2 do it. I saw them on this tour, just not at this venue. It was a great show. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

I wanted to take a few words to talk about the newest podcast on The Less Desirables Podcast Network. My pal, Eugene, who has been one of my besties, probably the bestie for the last 25 years and who was a former co-host with me on The Less Desirables, and author of the award-winning blog, Wheeler’s Dog, has turned that blog into a podcast.

It’s called Wheeler’s Dog Podcast. WheelersDog

It’s basically a well-planned and somewhat twisted stream of consciousness in spoken word format. It’s like him vomiting his quirky, sarcastic, curmudgeonly-laced personality into a podcast, but he’s funny as heck and ultimately he delivers with the podcast his own oddball version of love.

What does all that mean? It means you’re going to love it because it’s decidedly Eugene. And to know him is to love him.

I’m especially proud of this podcast because not only is it my pal doing it, not only is it him doing a podcast, not only is it on the Network, it’s him stepping into a realm that he is both very familiar with and very different than what he’s used to doing. I have been coaching him, helping through the learning curve, getting the episodes distribution-ready, and getting him on the major podcatcher services. I haven’t seen him that excited in a while. He has a Patreon page where you can subscribe and become a supporter which will get you perks like Patreon-exclusive episodes and “something cool.”

So, as the “mouthpiece” of the Network, and on his behalf, I invite you to listen to the first few episodes of the Wheeler’s Dog Podcast by visiting the Network site. You can also look up Wheeler’s Dog Podcast on YouTube and listen to the “free” episodes there, if you wish.

Welcome, Wheeler’s Dog Podcast, to the TLD Network family!

500 W 5th, a/perture cinema's street-side cinema, Downtown Winston-Salem, DWSP, Elephant in the Room, Incendiary Brewing Company, Stitch Design Shop, UNCSA Presents, Yamas Mediterranean Street Food

Salutations™!!

So, yesterday was the end of the “Big Job 2020.” A refresher here: the big job is always the videos and voice-overs for the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership’s Annual Excellence Awards. The Excellence Awards are always at the annual meeting of the DWSP in February and highlights companies, businesses, people and events that made a significant contribution to Downtown Winston-Salem the previous year. Thus, this year the awards were the 2019 Excellence Awards.

In short, the winners were (in no particular order): Yamas Mediterranean Street Food, 500 W 5th, Elephant in the Room, Stitch Design Shop, a/perture cinema’s street-side cinema,  Incendiary Brewing Company, and UNCSA Presents.

Instead of giving you a description of each one, I’m just going to let you see the videos. So, yes, it’s a video but a different kind. Note, there is a space of about five seconds between each winner. It starts with a/perture and ends with 500 W 5th. That’s how you know you’ve seen them all.

I got a lot of compliments and the winners were all “thrilled” with their vids. At least that’s what I’m told. I am always looking for ways to expand my skill sets and this is always fun, yet intensive for me. The hardest part is gathering all the info, gathering the visuals and writing the copy. Then comes the VO and then making the videos. Anyway, I’ve rambled enough. Here’s the video… enjoy!

Music, Tears for Fears, Video

Salutations™!!

So, I made it all the way through the “Big Job” today. Still, my brain is mush and I am doing music videos. Today is the 35th anniversary of one of my favorite albums from the 80s, Tears For Fears’ Songs From The Big Chair and this is one of my all-time favorite songs. This lovely young lady pulls it off perfectly. Enjoy!

Clay Howard, Led Zeppelin, Music, Video

Salutations™!!

I was in my studio this morning at 715a and with the exception of about 35 minutes, was in there until 515p. I was working on a political ad for TV and online as well as The Man Who Ate the Town. Add the “Big Job” and I’m worn out. Tomorrow is the “big job’s” culmination so it’s almost over for this year. Today is the 45th anniversary of Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti album. It is one of my faves from Zep and has a ton of great songs on its 2xLP set. Probably the biggest “hit” on the album was this song (at least in my eyes/ears) and this cover is done by one of my favorite humans, Mr. Clay Howard, and his amazing “rock spectacles.” Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

After missing a week of visiting Jonathan at Underdog Records, The BCPF and I made up for it. I went on Thursday and we both went on Friday. I missed having new records in my hands and flipping through the inventory. Here’s the haul:

Iron_Maiden_-_Seventh_Son_Of_A_Seventh_Son

©EMI/Capitol

  • Best Coast – Always Tomorrow — I heard this when I was preparing the ad for Underdog Records on The Less Desirables and thought it sounded like The BCPF’s kind of music. I was correct. She dug it. I dug it. New.
  • King Krule – Man Alive! — This was another one that I heard the lead single from and I liked it so I bought it. Once I got it home, though… meh. I like the artistic chances he was taking but it was hard to follow and hard to get into. Both of us were kind of speechless. But, I don’t give things up easily. I’m keeping it. It’s on blood-red, transparent vinyl. New.
  • Bob Marley & The Wailers – Exodus — The ninth studio album by Marley, it was a departure from most of what he wrote prior. Of the songs that ended up on Legacy, which is simultaneously his greatest hits album and the highest-selling reggae album of all time, this album had more tracks than any other. This album contains “Exodus,” “Jamming,” “Waiting in Vain,” “Turn Your Lights Down Low,” the amazing “Three Little Birds” and “One Love/People Get Ready,” co-written by Curtis Mayfield. NM.
  • Iron Maiden – Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son — I still need Somewhere In Time to have all the “classic” Iron Maiden albums that I really care about. I consider their first seven (of which this is seventh and SIT, sixth) the canon that matters. This isn’t my favorite from them but does have some good moments. I always think of a former classmate of mine, Mark Bohannon because he was the biggest Maiden fan I knew, which was odd to me because I pictured Maiden heads to be stoner types with long hair and all greasy skinned (gimme a break, I was new to this scene) and he was clean-cut, kept and wore sweaters and stuff. Anyway, this was something he talked about a good bit. NM.
  • Alice Cooper – Raise Your Fist And Yell — Alice’s 10th solo record and the last to feature Kip Winger on bass and Paul Taylor on keys, both would go on to form Winger with Reb Beach and Rod Morgenstein. The song “Prince of Darkness” was included in the film of the same name from John Carpenter. VG+.
  • Jill Barber – Metaphora — The 2018 album from jazz/folk vocalist Barber. Laidback and very listenable. A good listen, actually. The BCPF eats stuff like this for breakfast, so she, of course, loved it. On “Coke Bottle” blue/green transparent vinyl. NM.
  • Journey – Next — The last Journey album before Steve Perry came along (with Robert Fleishman making a brief stop, first) and totally pop-rocked them out (which is still my favorite era of Journey). I don’t recognize any of these tunes and it wasn’t what I was expecting. I was looking for it to be a little more proggy like the early Journey albums were, but they were kind of in pop mode here, it seems. None of these songs are in the live lineup of played tunes anymore. I liked it, it was just different to me. VG+.
  • Genesis – Seconds Out — 2xLP live album from Genesis. It was the last Genesis album to feature Steve Hackett, thus making Genesis a “three-piece” after this, in which …And Then There Were Three came along. This was recorded, mostly in Paris, on their Trick of the Tail tour. VG+.
  • Frankie Goes To Hollywood – Liverpool — FGTH’s second and final album. That’s sad because both this and its predecessor, 1984’s Welcome to the Pleasuredome are amazing albums. I love synth-driven pop and this is chock full of that. I enjoyed every note of both albums. Amazing stuff, both. I love them. I hate they didn’t do more.  VG+.

Again, it was good to get by Underdog Records again. They have a slew of electronic equipment for sale, either from the store or on consignment. Now is the time to get the equipment you need or want. Listen to each new episode of The Less Desirables to hear what the TLD/UR special of the moment is. Use Discogs to keep track of your music collection or to just do “random grab” choices. That’s fun.

Until tomorrow, keep spinning…

Salutations™!!

Today is the 34th anniversary of my favorite Ozzy album, The Ultimate Sin. I understand that Ozzy purists will slam that album as polished and over-produced and yeah, it may have been. Or, it may not have been. The biggest complaint the Oz-man himself had was the production. Ron Nevison is revered as a producer but something about it, Ozzy just doesn’t dig. Oddly enough, too, is that this is the only classic Ozzy album that has yet to be remastered. Ozzy said if he had the opportunity, he’d love to remix and remaster it.

The reason it’s my favorite is that it was my Ozzy introduction. I’ve talked about the perils of growing up in rural WV with teetotalling parents and not having access to all the musics in “wild and wonderful.” That was in addition to the onset of the PMRC and the religious zealots who wanted to control our rebellious rock and raunch tendencies. So, I was taught to fear what Ozzy was and could be. I mean, “OMG! He sings about suicide and bites heads off of doves and bats and stuff…” Give me a break.

Anywhat! I got to play in my first band and one of the first things I learned was “Shot in the Dark” from this album. When I moved here to NC, I bought it on cassette along with the tablature sheet music for it and I was taken in. The videos were cool for their time, too, at least to me. I had to go back and hear Ozzy’s previous solo stuff after the fact. Heck, I didn’t even know any Black Sabbath stuff except for “Iron Man” and that was because I was a wrestling fan and the Road Warriors used it as their entrance music. I was so sheltered.

But in looking for a proper cover, I realized people suck at this so I am going with the OG Oz-Man doing it in 1989 with Zakk Wylde and Geezer Butler instead of Jake E. Lee and Phil Soussan from the album. Randy Castillo (RIP) is playing drums and did on the album. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

I think I’ve gotten through the “big project” and I’m just waiting to hear if there were any edits that needed to be made from what I submitted. But, today is the 52nd anniversary of Blood Sweat & Tears’ Child Is Father to the Man album. It’s #266 on the RS list and going back to read my entry, I liked it (you can read that here). When I first picked this version of this song, I didn’t really like it but I listened again and the guy is definitely feeling it. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

Today is the 36th anniversary of the debut, self-titled Smiths album. The world was introduced to probably one of the most miserable people ever in Morrissey. This version of this song is really good and I think he sings it better than Ol’ Steve (Steven Patrick Morrissey) did. Enjoy!
