Salutations™!!

Yeah, I know this is Friday and in the last bit I’ve done a “Friend Friday” post but I didn’t have time to write a long and thoughtful post today. But, I am going to talk briefly about my Google Voice number again.

We want to take listeners’ calls and texts for all the podcasts that I produce on The Less Desirables Network. This is not for the podcasts that I produce for others and outside of the Network, but this is for The Less Desirables, Fan Interference, The Beer Dads, The Man Who Ate the Town, Apartment 5B, Beeswax Vinyl & More and even Sipping NC: The Art of Drinking. TLDN GoogleVoice

If you have comments, questions, suggestions, or whatever, feel free to call or text the Network (repped by Such-N-Such Media/Such-N-Such Limited, Inc.).

It doesn’t matter which of these shows it’s for. When you call or text the number just make sure you say, “this is for xxx” (with “xxx” being the show you’re engaging or communicating about). If it’s a text, then I will read it “on-air” for the podcast that you’re talking about. If you leave a voicemail, I will play it on the podcast. If you want to communicate but don’t want me to read or play it on the air, all you have to do is say so in the communique, although I do reserve the right to read it or not in either instance.

And, if you want to communicate with me on this blog, you can also use the number.

We (the podcast owners/hosts/content artists) want to hear from our listeners, even if it’s something you need to set us straight or complain about.

So, I’m 283 words in and haven’t reiterated the number yet.  Well… it’s 336-422-NUMB. Yes, 336-422-6862. So, let us know about your thoughts, insults, questions or comments.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Huey Lewis & The News, Music, Robert John "Mutt" Lange, Video

Salutations™!!

Yesterday was the 38th anniversary of Huey Lewis and the News’ second album, Picture This. This is my favorite song on the album but it wasn’t written by the band. It was written by Robert John “Mutt” Lange. As far as the band covering it their harmonies are dead on and impressive, but the lead singer kind of gets on my nerves. Anywhat, enjoy!

Facebook Live, Jukebox Rehab, The Less Desirables, The Less Desirables Network

Salutations™!!

Tonight on The Less Desirables we had some live music. We had Jukebox Rehab and they gave us a mini-concert with a good bit of country music and it’s more along the lines of the late-80s to mid-90s kind of country, not that “bro-country” crap that you hear today. I really don’t like that stuff, but what JBR did was fantastic. We did a few Facebook Live sessions as well and there were a lot of folks checking out the show. We may do more of those in the future. It’s on the horizon. 20200129_203415-01

Anyway, check out the vids on our Facebook page.

I’d appreciate it, muchly.

Kobe Bryant, NBA

Salutations™!!

I was never a fan of the Lakers. I wasn’t a Kobe fan, either. But, I respected him and I understand what he was for the league. It was such a surreal moment yesterday when the news came in. 3B sent me a text because he follows a lot of sports. So, this is all I’m going to say, RIP, Mamba.

Salutations™!!

The BCPF and I had a great listening day yesterday. We got by Underdog Records and grabbed a good bit of stuff and came back and listened. It was really a great listen. Okay, here’s the haul:

  • Wolf Parade – Thin Mind — Great Canadian band out of Montreal and on the Sub Pop label. Good straight-forward indie power pop. Well-written tunes and full of hooks. I heard their lead single, “Julia Take Your Man Home” when I was doing the Underdog Records ad for this past week’s The Less Desirables. New.

  • Angelo Badalamenti – Music From Twin Peaks — The BCPF and I love this show and we love the music. I think we both had it on CD or something. But, this is on limited edition clear green vinyl. It sounds fantastic and brings back good memories of going back and watching the show together. I love the lounge aspect of the music. It’s so fun! New.
  • Pet Shop Boys – Hotspot — Brand new Pet Shop Boys! It’s their first since 2016. Which, to me could have been their first since 1990 and I wouldn’t have known any better. I didn’t even know they were still together. That being said, I loved listening to this. Great dance electronica with some grit and humor (or humour, since they’re Brits), which is what they’ve always done. This was so much fun to listen to. I recommend it if you were ever a fan of their stuff. New.
  • Oingo Boingo – Dead Man’s Party — I heard an audible gasp out of The BCPF when she found this one in the “newly acquired” section. I knew of a few Oingo Boingo songs, most notably “Weird Science” and a few others and I didn’t realize that my entire Oingo Boingo knowledge was this album. “Just Another Day,” the title track, “Stay,” and the aforementioned “Weird Science” are all here. The whole album was amazing and I thought to myself, I could listen to this again. I don’t usually do that, but it would have been worth it! EX/VG++.
  • Rage – Rage — So, it’s been fun doing what I call “Pulling a Bob” and no, that’s not a euphemism for something dirty… get your head out of the gutter (although that would be a funny one). Pulling a Bob is in reference to the drummer from my old band Heavens Sake. We joked that he would go and look through albums, cassettes and CDs and look for whatever bands he could find that had a lot of hair. He was really into that kind of thing. Well, my “Bob” isn’t necessarily that. I just like finding those early-to-mid 80s bands that look like they’d be hard rock or sound like they would. This is listed as hard rock, and I had to do some digging to find anything on them. Apparently, they were Nutz before this and consisted of John Mylett, Dave Lloyd, Keith Mulholland, Mick Devonport, and Terry Steers. They’re Brits. I think the cover looks more like Loverboy than an early 80s hard rock band. Then again, I guess you could call early 80s Loverboy a “hard” rock band. VG+.
  • Sugarloaf – Spaceship Earth — All I know of Sugarloaf is “Green Eyed Lady” and that’s not on here. But, it was just a couple of bucks and I said, why not. I like “GEL.” VG+.
  • Don Henley – I Can’t Stand Still — Henley’s debut solo album with “Dirty Laundry,” “Johnny Can’t Read” and the title track. He looks so young on the cover. VG+.
  • Re-Flex – The Politics Of Dancing — I love the title track and really, that’s all I know from them. I hope the rest of the album is in the vein of that song. A couple of bucks, I couldn’t turn it down. VG+.
  • Bonnie Raitt – Sweet Forgiveness — This is the album that has her cover of Del Shannon’s “Runaway” on it. That song reached #57 on the chart. The BCPF picked this one up. VG+.
  • Chris de Burgh – The Getaway — I knew the big hit on this album, “Don’t Pay the Ferryman” from the K-Tel album Hot Tracks which was partly the catalyst for me breaking my “KISS Isolation.” I listened to nothing but KISS for so long and then this was given to me by my mother for Christmas and I found myself really into pop music. I have grown a lot since then. Anywhat! I liked that “Ferryman” song and this was there for a few bucks, I said, yes, please! VG+.
  • Blue Öyster Cult – Some Enchanted Evening — A live album from BOC. Okay. It’s pretty rough but Jonathan has it listed as VG-. That’s what I’m going with, too.

So, a solid haul. We loved listening to the new albums and revisiting the older ones. A long listening day full of goodness. We were talking with Jonathan in the store and he was devising a new way of labeling his used records, with barcodes. His system is kind of confusing to me, but I’m sure I’ll learn it better. He hunts down the exact version that’s in Discogs (which I know from experience can be daunting and sometimes downright impossible) and that’s included in the code, too, so it takes the work out of it for you. Another thing we talked about his how he always makes sure that, unless it’s a $1 bin find, he or De or Adam cleans each record by not only washing them but running them through the vacuum system so that it doesn’t only dry the liquid cleaner but also sucks up all the bad particles and such. Unless we buy some $1 records, I don’t have to come home and run my records through my cleaner, I just use the static brush to get a few straggling particles and I have the cleanest listening experience possible with the records I get.  Jonathan takes such good care of his customers and friends. Thanks, buddy.

Listen to each new episode of TLD for the TLD/UR special of the week. I use Discogs to track my record collection and Jonathan may have just made it easier.

Alice in Chains, Music, Sounds Like Saturday, Video

Salutations™!!

Today is the 26th anniversary of what I consider to be Alice In Chains’ most melodic album, the EP Jar Of Flies. I like Dirt better, overall, but this does have some fantastic tunes. It’s Mike Inez’s first album with the band after Mike Starr’s dismissal for drug use, which I think is a bit hypocritical considering Layne Staley was known to be an abuser of substance as well and eventually died from an overdose. But, they were in solid form on this. This band may or may not be an AIC cover band but they do several covers of them so… enjoy!

Salutations™!!

Remember when you used to do the #FF on Twitter just a few years back? It stood for Follow Friday or Friend Friday (according to who you asked) and as far as I can tell, no one really does that any longer and whilst I’ll admit I was slack on that on Twitter, I will also say that Twitter isn’t my main social media platform and I just didn’t do it. But, I think it was a good idea and I’d like to pick that back up, except do it here on this blog.

I have a slew of friends that are interesting folks. They may have businesses, they may be musicians, they may just be eclectic as heck, whatever! I just think they need to be highlighted more because they bring awesomeness to the world and we’re lucky to have them here in WSNC.

—

My friend Haydee Thompson owns, operates and curates the artist wonderment that is the Wherehouse Art Hotel. This “hotel” is located in the area above what used to be The Werehouse and then PS 211 (or Project Space 211). It is located at 211 E 3rd Street in downtown Winston-Salem. More on that address in a moment…_where

The “hotel” is an AirBnB that Haydee runs and it’s much more than just a place to lay your head.

According to their Facebook page: “Once an artist collective the Wherehouse has a long history of hosting artists and musicians from around the globe and is continuing in this tradition to include the community here.

“The Wherehouse Art Hotel provides a warm and home-like setting with an artistic touch brought to you by collaborations of designers and artists in which every hand made item has a story and is available for purchase in the spirit of supporting the Arts.”

They do installations of art from around the area and it isn’t only aesthetically pleasing but the art is usually for sale.

Each of the rooms is themed and when you stay in one of them you’re part of the installation. Not that anyone can just come in and look at stuff when you’re renting the room, but you are surrounded by the art. The rooms are Studio Loft, Screening Room, The Green Room, The Gallery Room (where you actually are in the gallery). There are event spaces and a kitchen that are available for parties and gatherings, too. If you’re feeling frisky, you can rent the whole hotel. That’s the event space, the lobby, the kitchen, with four rooms and six beds.

Plus, Haydee is sweet. You’ll love her. Everyone does. For more information or to book a room, go to their website. Go spend the night with some art.

—

I said that the WAH was located at 211 E 3rd Street and “used to be called this” and “used to be called that.” What it is currently known as, and has been for the last decade and more is Krankies. Krankies started as just a coffee roaster that still had live music and some craft cocktails. They’ve moved away from the live music (mostly) and still roast their own coffee and have a full-service coffee shop with a full bar, dinner specials, breakfast, lunch and more.

There’s an open-air patio and in the cooler months, it’s enclosed. There is also ample seating in the dining room. It’s a great place for meetings because there are places to sit, the offerings are fantastic and you can have a beer or coffee.

I love their sausage, egg and cheese biscuits, the chicken biscuit with Texas Pete honey, and the biscuits and gravy for breakfast. No… not all at the same time. In fact, I had one, okay, okay, two of the SEC biscuits yesterday before my marathon session with Forsyth Magazines. Other breakfast items include the Huevos Rancheros, Challah French Toast, a Breakfast Burrito, Hoppin’ John (rice, red field peas, house-made chow-chow, and cornbread), and a grit bowl.

_krankThey have burgers and we know I love burgers. I recommend the Cheesy Western with a fried egg and pickle relish. I dig it, but there are other burger options, too. There are salads if that’s your thing. Like I said, they have dinner specials, too. I’d watch their social media for the lowdown on that stuff.

Krankies has what is probably the most distributed local coffee in WSNC. I’d say that around 70-80% of the restaurants in town that serve coffee serve Krankies. It’s easy to get and it’s good.

This is where I held The BCPF’s hand for the first time and it’s where I told her I loved her the first time. We sat one day from just past 2p until 7p gazing at each other. So, it’s special to me.

Give Krankies a try for a good meal and good coffee. Visit their website.

Neither Wherehouse Art Hotel nor Krankies are sponsors of mine so these are honest reviews and I get nothing in return for the unsolicited recommendations.

I hope you’ll visit my friends soon, not just Fridays, and help local businesses and local business owners and hey, you can get good beverages and delicious pies! Thanks for reading about my friends.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

I’m running late this evening so I’m going to talk about one of my favorite bands but not necessarily my favorite stuff they do. Today is the 43rd anniversary of Pink Floyd’s Animals album. I love everything about the album except the album. I really like hits and this is bereft of those. Some of the tunes were live staples, I understand, but, I just don’t do long, drawn-out prog stuff very well. But, I get it. This is a group of talented youngsters doing “Dogs” from the album. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

I haven’t caught you up on my Disney+ watching. I told you I had been watching all the True Life Adventures stuff and the Star Wars: The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian. And, I said I was watching all the animated features from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Frozen II (which may be expanded to Spies In Disguise, but I’m not sure of that yet). I think the last one I mentioned was when I was watching The Aristocats.

CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v80), quality = 92

I’m writing this as I’m watching Fantasia 2000, which is the “sequel” to the 1940’s animated classic. So, since I mentioned it last, I have watched Robin Hood, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, The Rescuers, The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron (which I didn’t watch in order because I had seen it a few weeks back before I started the sequence), The Great Mouse Detective, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Oliver & Company, The Little Mermaid, DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp, The Rescuers Down Under, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Lion King, A Goofy Movie, Pocahontas, Toy Story, James and the Giant Peach, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (same as Black Cauldron), Hercules (ditto), Mulan, A Bug’s Life and Toy Story 2.

That’s a lot! I have enjoyed them so very much. I love that they are available. Speaking of which, Tarzan isn’t going to be available until around June, so I had to skip that. I also skipped Doug’s 1st Movie because, nah, that’s just throwing off on a Disney Channel original. I should have skipped the DuckTales movie, too.

What is your favorite Disney animated feature? That can include Pixar or the Tim Burton films, too. I’d like to hear about it and why.

Until tomorrow, back to my “Rhapsody in Blue…”
