Salutations™!!

Today on The Man Who Ate the Town podcast, I announced my Top 10 Burgers in WSNC (ish). You can listen to that list on the podcast HERE.burger

You can wait to read the list if you prefer. That post comes out tomorrow at noon.

Now, what you may want to listen to the podcast for is to get the answer to the “question.” The answer to this “question” could give you a pair of free tickets to The Big Sip, which happens this Saturday.

So, the question is this: Where does Tim say is his “favorite place in the world” in the podcast? No matter what you may have read in the past, you’ll need to know what I say in this podcast episode.

So, if you get the answer, send me an email at tim@themanwhoatethetown.com and use the Subject: The Big Sip. The first two people who follow the directions and get the answer correct get two tickets each. These are the $30 tix and you can upgrade to the full ticket for 1p for only $15. Or you can just go and have some beverages at 3p. Your choice.

So, there you have it. The contest has begun.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Yesterday was the start of the $1 sale at Underdog Records. Jonathan and De put out around 3,000 records Friday night after work. Jonathan estimates around 1600 of those went out yesterday during the sale. Some people walked out with over 200 records yesterday. The place was a madhouse and I loved seeing it like that. Here’s our modest haul, by comparison:

412KCHYT2YL.jpg

©Warner Bros.

  • Lou Reed – The Blue Mask — This was not $1. It was found as we waited in line to purchase what we had already gotten. It was Reed’s 11th studio album. This was okay. It’s not my area of expertise for him. To me, nothing beats Transformer and Berlin from Lou. VG+.
  • The Police – Synchronicity — I know what you’re thinking, dude, you already have this album. You would be correct. There’s a special thing about this album. On vinyl, in 1983, there were around 93 different variants of the cover of this album. Some were blue, red, yellow (BRY), others were (RYB) and then others, still were (YBR), on top of that, in each color scheme, different pictures showed the band members in various orders and in various pictures. No, I’m not looking to have 93 different variants of this album. I am however looking for 30 different variants. I have three right now. I thought I had a fourth but it was a duplicate. Boo hiss. This is BRY and is Sting/Stewart/Andy with the textsheet to the left. VG+.

The rest of these are $1 records and are assumed to be graded VG unless otherwise noted:

  • The Police – Synchronicity — Yep, we found another and it was the first RYB that I had seen. This is Andy/Sting/Stewart with tub on the right. That’s how it is designated. VG+.
  • Richie Havens – Connections — Looks to be his 13th studio album.
  • The Ambrosian Singers And Players – The Cries Of London – Music In Honor Of Queen Elizabeth I — We love stuff that has to do with England and UK. VG+.
  • Various – Scottish Pipes — See previous entry explanation except for VG-.
  • Chicago – Chicago 19 — Their 16th studio album (yeah, I know what you’re thinking but they continued to count studio and live albums in the sequence) the second with Jason Schiff replacing Peter Cetera. VG+
  • Gordon Jenkins And His Orchestra – France – 70 — You know we love our French music, too. We find all kinds of reasons to own anything we can French.
  • Igor Stravinsky – Columbia Symphony Orchestra – Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky: The Firebird — We got this one and another version of the same piece, but I don’t think Stravinsky conducted it. It isn’t in Discogs, so I’ll need to put it in myself.
  • Nat King Cole – A Many Splendored Thing — The BCPF loves anything Nat King Cole, so yes.
  • The Montevideo Singing Strings – I Love Paris — And so do we. From 1964. VG-.
  • Arthur Fiedler And The Boston Pops – Play The Music Of Paul Simon — Paul Simon, “pops.” Yep.
  • Thomas Schippers, New York Philharmonic, Lili Chookasian, The Westminster Choir, Prokofiev – Alexander Nevsky — Composed by Sergei Prokofiev about the Russian prince and conducted by Schippers. VG+.
  • Ambrosia – One Eighty — We love our Yacht Rock. This has “Biggest Part of Me” and “You’re the Only Woman (You & I).”
  • Lester Flatt And Earl Scruggs – The Fabulous Sound Of Lester Flatt And Earl Scruggs — VG-.
  • Debussy • Richard Strauss • Fritz Reiner • Chicago Symphony – La Mer • Don Juan —VG-.
  • Nils Lofgren – I Came To Dance — A member of Springsteen’s E Street Band since 1984. His third solo album from 1977.
  • Gary Graffman ♦ Eugene Ormandy ♦ George Szell, Philadelphia Orchestra ♦ Cleveland Orchestra – Tchaikovsky – The Three Tchaikovsky Piano Concertos — I don’t think Tchaikovsky get the credit he deserves in piano-dom.
  • The Piano, Orchestra And Chorus Of Henry Mancini – A Warm Shade Of Ivory — I love Henry Mancini. VG+.
  • Rick Wakeman – White Rock — The keyboardist of Yes. The soundtrack to White Rock, a 1977 documentary film about the 1976 Winter Olympics held in Innsbruck, Austria.
  • Marian Anderson – Songs By Schubert – Schumann – Brahms – Strauss – Haydn — Chosen by The BCPF. No clue.
  • Andy Williams – The Andy Williams Christmas Album — The BCPF also loves her Christmas albums and while I usually give two hoots about Christmas stuff, I do think that his “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” (along with “Sleigh Ride” composed by Leroy Anderson and first recorded by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra) brings back the whole childhood memory thing of Christmas.
  • Tchaikovsky, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy – “Pathetique” Symphony (No. 6 In B Minor) — VG+.
  • Tchaikovsky – 1812 Overture ● Serenade For Strings — One of the most bombastic pieces of music, ever! VG+.
  • Laurindo Almeida – Guitar Music Of Spain — Spain is on the itinerary for next year’s trip to Europe for The Beer Dads+ so we had to get this, but even if it weren’t on the itinerary, we’d probably still have gotten it. VG+.
  • Moussorgsky – Ravel / Franck – Arturo Toscanini, NBC Symphony Orchestra – Pictures At An Exhibition / Psyche And Eros — VG+.
  • The ‘Big’ Sound – A Tribute To Glenn Miller — I love big band standards and this is Glenn Miller. This is big band standards. VG+.

This week, (Tuesday-Friday) the records will be left out for the same deal that went on yesterday, purchase 15 and get 15% off; purchase 33 and get 33% off; purchase 50 and get 50% off. Next Saturday, all remaining $1 record will be $.25 each or 5-for-$1, but they will close two hours early on that Saturday (at 5p). Because of this, there will be no TLD/UR special of the week. This is a great way to kickstart a record collection. Discogs has been a big help to me on this long list.

Until tomorrow, keep spinning…

Again, full disclosure, I forgot to post this yesterday but will date it for yesterday.

Today is the 32nd anniversary of Depeche Mode’s Music for the Masses and The Smiths’ Strangeway, Here We Come. So, the song I picked got to say “Strange” in an effort to bridge the two. Enjoy!

Honeymoon, Life, Life as It is, Music, reception, The BCPF, Wedding

Salutations™!!

I’m going to be transparent, here. I know I update this blog every day. But, somehow I forgot to do that on Friday and then again yesterday. And, Friday was one of those “anniversary posts” that I am always on top of. I totally bombed that one. SO, I’m going to do it, date it for Friday but this is really Sunday and I apologize for that. Also, this is a “reprint” of last year’s post.

September 27 is the last anniversary of the year that The BCPF and I “officially” recognize. We celebrate our first date on July 21. We celebrate our engagement on July 31. We celebrate the big one, the wedding anniversary on September 2. And, we celebrate the anniversary of the big shindig in which our friends and family actually got together to celebrate our marriage, the “reception.”1496655_10153193510478626_3051996828488742125_n

It was a great weather day. My bro-in-law and sister did a chicken stew for us. Mes ‘Rents provided the location. Golden Corral provided some rolls. Doug Davis, Lee & Susan Terry, Ken Mohan and Dan DesNoyers along with Patrick Ferguson played music for us. Doug (yes, that Doug Davis) joined me to perform the song I wrote for my new bride before we started dating.

Ma Mère strongly encouraged The BCPF to wear her dress. I wore my kilt. It was the last time that the original “DFK” was together, as well. To know what that means you’d have to know more about our past. Sorry if it’s vague.

Later that evening, we had a small get-together with alcohol (my parents’ place is “dry”) and had our pal Chris McDounagh making high-quality cocktails to our guests. It was a big difference in size and attendees. But, it was still pretty darn cool to have these folks. Yes, these anniversaries are about “us.” However, this day allowed everyone to join us at the same time. To us it was about “us” collectively, not just The BCPF and me. We thank all of you that were there that day. But, we also thank all of you that have been with us the entire time. You mean a lot to us.

To Stephanie, I love you immensely and truly, more and more each day. You are the reason I am alive and you are the reason I can do what I do. You are the heartbeat of The Less Desirables, of our marriage and of my existence. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I hope to post about our “Big 4” anniversaries for many more years to come.

Nothing has changed, other than I love her more now.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

I’ve told you how much I love this DC Universe thing.  I went through the Young Justice series and now I’m doing the Green Lantern series. It’s a lot shorter but I’m enjoying it.

I don’t get paid for saying this but if you’ve not checked out the app, yet, and you’re into comics, especially DC Comics’ characters, then you really should. There’s a lot to go through. You can even read comics on the app. That’s a thumbs-up for me!

Until tomorrow, stay green…

Salutations™!!

I finished my “Top 10 Burgers of Winston-Salem (ish)” for The Man Who Ate the Town this week. I have contacted all the burger spots that are on the top 10 list and most of them have responded to me. I know what you’re saying, “so, let’s see this list!”

Well, you’ll have to wait a little bit longer. I will announce the placements on TMWATT podcast on Monday and the post will happen on Tuesday afternoon on the TMWATT website. Food Freaks

Speaking of podcasts, on The Less Desirables this evening, we had Dale Cole and Rick Gustaitis from Camel City Revelators to talk about their Sunday afternoon charity events. In the podcast, Bethany, Danielle and I did a nod to the “As Ardmore Turns” segment we used to do on TLD with a little ditty called “As Downtown Turns” as we talked about the recent Bartsy activity that they’ve been talking about on the Downtown WSNC Facebook page. You can listen to that episode HERE.

Dave Mustaine, Megadeth

Salutations™!!

Today is the 29th anniversary of Megadeth’s Rust In Peace album. I have always thought that Dave Mustaine was a better songwriter than Hetfield and company in the band that kicked him out. Yeah, he had his issues, but he’s all straightened up from that, found the lord and cleaned up his act. In June of this year, he announced that he had throat cancer. I don’t know what his status is, right now. This is my favorite song from the album. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

This weekend, as I said was a little bit weird, timing-wise and we didn’t get to do our normal listening. That also threw our posting off a little on Beeswax Vinyl and in the Underdog Records “Now Spinning” page. So, I’ll leave a little posting about them here. Hah’bah’dah?

This is from Saturday, Sunday and one today.

First up is a great record from The Smithereens. It’s their debut album from 1986, titled Especially For You. I say debut, but I really mean their first full-length album. They had some EPs and stuff prior. This had “Blood and Roses” and “Behind the Walls of Sleep” on it.

Then came the debut album from one of my favorite bands, The Police. It’s Outlandos D’Amour. They were extra punk/ska at this time and the album is just full of awesome tunes. “Next to You,” “So Lonely,” “Roxanne,” “Hole in My Life,” “Can’t Stand Losing You,” “Truth Hits Everybody” and “Born in the ’50s” just to name a few. I love this album. It’s not my favorite Police album but it’s tied for second with the other three that aren’t Synchronicity.

Next, was The Replacements’ Pleased to Meet Me. It wasn’t Tim or Let It Be (not to be confused with the Beatles album of the same name), which were both on the RS list, but it does have the song “Alex Chilton,” named after the singer of The Box Tops and Big Star. Chilton actually plays on this album, too, but not on that song. It’s punk, it’s rock, it’s alternative. It’s great. I enjoyed listening to it, a lot.

Those were Saturday’s listens. Sunday, we only got one in and that was Walking Across Egypt, which is basically author and musician Clyde Edgerton doing songs based on two of his books, Walking Across Egypt and Raney. This album is a lot of banjo and not-quite-bluegrass-Americana. Edgerton is a native of North Carolina, being born in Bethesda, close to Durham. He is a professor at UNC-Wilmington and has a street named for him in Kernersville. This is signed by Edgerton. The last bit is kind of an audiobook with a couple of passages read by the author. A good listen.

Today, I listened to Pink Floyd’s Animals. This was the transition between Wish You Were Here and The Wall. It’s not my favorite, by any means. It’s a little more proggy than I’d like and less about compact songs. I like compact songs. Heck, read any of my RS list reviews. It’s a concept album that is based on socio-political issues in the late 1970s UK. That was a tumultuous time, for sure. There was turmoil within the band at that time, too. It led to Richard Wright leaving or being fired. Either way, he was no longer in the band. He was just a “hired hand” on The Wall, even though I felt he was a very important part of both of those albums. This was a decent listen. I dug it.

That’s what I got for our playing the last few days. One day, we’ll get back to recording Beeswax Vinyl & More podcast. We’ll talk about more records soon. Hey, speaking of podcasts, we recorded both Fan Interference and The Man Who Ate the Town today. Listen to TMWATT here and FI here.

Salutations™!!

Yesterday was a scheduling-weird day for The BCPF and me. We had a house-warming to attend in Charlotte so we had to put our regular activities on hold. We got back into town around 3pm so then we got to go to Underdog Records and got to listen to a few before we went to dinner. Anywhat! We got some good stuff. Here’s the haul:

The_Replacements_-_Pleased_to_Meet_Me_cover

©Sire Records

  • The Replacements – Pleased To Meet Me — All I knew of this band (other than listening to the stuff on the RS list, somehow this isn’t on that) was the song “Alex Chilton” about, well, Alex Chilton, the founder of Big Star and lead singer of the 60s band, The Box Tops (“The Letter”). That song is on this album. Chilton actually played on this album, but not on his namesake tune. The Replacements started in punk but moved a little more straight-ahead rock and became one of the pioneering “alternative” rock bands. This album is great! I really dug it. VG+.
  • Paul Simon – Still Crazy After All These Years — We had this already but it was only in VG shape. We aren’t going on a big run of re-collecting better versions as it may seem we are from the last few weeks. However, if we find something that we know we are a fan of but our version wasn’t in the best of shape, then we’ll get the better version because we really enjoy listening. Besides, this one is a reissue on Warner Bros and the original we had was on Columbia. EX/VG++.
  • The Smithereens – Especially For You — The first full-length album by The Smithereens and supposedly one of Kurt Cobain’s favorite albums, per his journal. “Blood and Roses” and “Behind the Wall of Sleep” were both Top 40 hits on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks charts and the album is solid. It was a fun listen. EX/VG++.
  • The Smithereens – Green Thoughts — The follow up to the previous entry, we haven’t listened to this one, yet. It had the singles “Only a Memory,” “House We Used to Live In,” and “Drown in My Own Tears.” Sadly, we lost singer/guitarist Pat DiNizio in 2017. EX/VG++.
  • Pink Floyd – Animals — One of the few “classic” Floyd albums I didn’t have. This isn’t in the greatest shape but I couldn’t pass it up. It’s one of their “proggy” ones that is only five songs long but has three over 10 minutes long. I’ve heard it and it’s not my fave but I now have it. It’s an original pressing. VG-.
  • The Police – Outlandos D’Amour — The debut album by one of my faves. Finding them on vinyl has been somewhat of a chore. But, I’m working on it. This has “Next to You,” “So Lonely,” “Roxanne,” “Hole in My Life,” “Can’t Stand Losing You,” “Truth Hits Everybody” and “Born in the ’50s.” I love this album. I love all their albums, even if I don’t love all the songs. VG is what Jonathan said and while I trust him more than my own ratings, I didn’t hear any surface wear or noise so I’m going to say it’s VG+.
  • Glen Campbell – Southern Nights — I’m not a huge Campbell fan, but I do like the title song and I recognize his talent. It was $2. VG++.

Jonathan was busy in the store yesterday and he and “D” have been working on getting the store cleaned up for the big $1 album sale coming next weekend. Basically, boxes and boxes of $1 albums that he’s never put out before will be available and people will (hopefully) go crazy and buy a bunch of stuff! It could be a big deal. So, make sure you get by and get your $1 records. Make sure you clean them before you play them. Dirty records are like a social disease for styli. Listen to this week’s The Less Desirables to hear more about it! I have been using Discogs to “shake” my phone which leads to a random pick from my collection. That’s awesome.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Today is the 40th anniversary of Cheap Trick’s Dream Police album. I got to perform my favorite song from this album when VSS did the Live at Budokan a few years back. But, other than Clay Howard, I don’t think anyone touches Robin Zander trying to sing these songs, so, instead of a cover, here’s the real deal. Enjoy!
