Belle & Sebastian, Dalmahoy, Edinburgh, Honeymoon, Music, Scotland, Sounds Like Saturday, Travel

Salutations™!!

Continuing the fifth-year memories of our glorious time in Edinburgh, we spent our first night in the Dalmahoy, a 300-year old castle that sits on two 18-hole golf courses and has one of the stillest and quietest elevators lifts I’ve ever been on. Whilst waiting on our room to be ready, we had haggis and blood pudding for the first time, sat out and watched the first and 18th holes of one or both courses, and wandered about the beautiful grounds.

We got to take a nap and rejuvenate a little whilst the Tottenham football match was on the television. When we woke up and went down to grab a car to take us into Edinburgh, we came around the corner and the hotel attendant was singing along to a song on the radio. The song playing was from Belle & Sebastian which is one of The BCPF’s favorite bands and I dig the heck out of them, too. B&S are from Glasgow, which is only about 30 minutes away from Edinburgh. We mentioned that we loved them and she looked at us in that cheeky UK way and said, I don’t know what you’re talking about.

So, here’s the song she was listening to. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

I’m writing this at about 1145p on August 30. Five years ago right now, we were somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean on our way to Edinburgh, Scotland.

We almost missed our flight because as we were laying over, the airline or airport switched not only the gate but the entire terminal in the Philadelphia airport. We didn’t know this until about 20 minutes before our flight was scheduled to depart. We were told to run. No one called to warn them that we were bustling our way over there. We were not running but we were walking very fast to get to the correct terminal.

We were several gates away and one of those carts went by carrying some girl to wherever she was going. We were getting closer and we could hear “Scorp, party of two.” It wasn’t Scorp but our real last name (well, hers to be). “Scorp, party of two. Last call!” I had to yell “we’re coming!!!!” We get to the gate and the girl on the cart that passed us was getting on the plane. We were literally the last ones to board. In fact, they closed the door behind me.

Since we were the last ones to get on, and it was a full flight, that meant that there was no room in the overhead bins. We had to put our carryon’s under our feet and fly eight hours like that. The BCPF nodded off for a bit but was awakened by the girl at the window having to go to the bathroom just as she fell asleep. I can’t sleep without my CPAP so I can’t sleep on those flights. That’s a shame. I need a portable one that runs on batteries or something.

Anyway, at this time we’re still flying. We’ll talk more about that this weekend.

Happy beginning of the holiday weekend and our anniversary weekend!

Home, mold, ServPro

Salutations™!!

Today, ServPro began tearing the heck out of my AC closet, the laundry room, the downstairs bathroom, and part of the kitchen. The mold behind the sheetrock that was either directly or indirectly in contact with the leaking AC unit was really bad. Oddly, the AQ (air quality) test came back with no cross-contamination. mold-sign

I quote one of the mitigation team (heard by me in the living room): “my lord almighty!” I had to go in and see what was going on. There was a lot of mold eating away at a lot of sheetrock. Again, it was bad. They wiped down the vents with an antimicrobial that makes my whole house smell like Chloraseptic but without the not-exactly-pleasant cherry flavor. The laundry room and the AC closet was also cleaned with that stuff. They’ll go to ripping the rest out after they get the mold controlled.

They are coming back tomorrow to do more stuff, so it’s on like Donkey Kong. Forgive me for that one.

Me with Dr. C!

Tonight on The Les Less Desirables we had brothers Jacob and Issac Rudolph who were promoting their new business, Fort in the Woods, which focuses on getting young folks’ noses out of their electronic devices and out in nature and the great outdoors. We talked about the business, nature, outdoors, life, music, beer and trebuchets. If you don’t know what a trebuchet is, Google it. It seems it would be a world of fun!

In addition, Danielle had to leave early because she was under the weather. But, Caitlin Weaver, former co-host of TLD came in for the last part of the show. She had her dissertation defense today and she passed! Yay! So, now we will call her Dr. Caitlin, or as she liked when I called her, Dr. C!! Congrats to her!

You can listen to the episode HERE.

We also recorded Fan Interference for the first time in a month. Hear that HERE.

Salutations™!!fantasyfootball

It’s that time again! Football season is upon us and that means it’s also time for Fantasy Football. Per usual, I am in two leagues, The Less Desirables league and Willows league. We had both drafts on the same day one after the other. It was a long day/evening but there was a lot of great food and drinks and we had fun. That’s what it’s all about.

I ended up with good players on both leagues, although the NFL rating system seems to think I’ll end up next to last. We’ll see. Of course, I’ll keep you informed.

3B, Life, Life as It is, school

Salutations™!!

Today was the first day of school in the WSFCS system. That means it was 3B’s first day. I know a lot of people were posting “first day of school” pictures on social media all day. I know some people have a problem with that. I don’t understand what the problem can be. You don’t like it, stay off of social media. That’s what I’d be told if I complained about something, right? Right indeed! It has happened.

I’m not big on posting mine on social media, although I have done it. And, of course, I’ll be adding one in this post and then sharing on social media so, yeah, I too will be adding mine. But, I get how people get tired of seeing it. I don’t care one way or another. We are proud of our kids and rejoice in it. I say this because today was the last “first day of school” that 3B will have. At least for the elementary/primary/K12 school life.

He’s a senior, a twelfth grader, last year. Senioritis kicked in around Third Grade so he has been living that for a few. I’m kidding mostly. I saw him a few minutes ago and asked how his first day was and he said “boring.” That explains what we’ll deal with all year. I love him and am proud of him, but I wish he had more gumption to do better in school. We’ll see what happens.

Anywhat! Here’s his first picture.

Bread, Discogs, Earth Wind and Fire, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Mötley Crüe, Music, Records, The BCPF, The Less Desirables, Underdog Records

Salutations™!!

It was a weird day yesterday as we had to drop off The BCPF’s car with my Bro-in-Law to have him do some servicing to it. Then we went to the bank to deposit the money from the insurance and then to breakfast before heading to Underdog. I love Underdog Records. Here’s the short-haul:

ShoutattheDevil

©Elektra

  • Mötley Crüe – Shout At The Devil — To me, this is the best Mötley album. It was where I was introduced to them via a rare vacation to somewhere that the USA channel and its Night Flight. I saw the “Looks That Kill” and “Too Young to Fall in Love” videos and was hooked. This was when I was breaking out of my KISS-only exile. In fact, the first KISS album that I got on cassette instead of LP was Lick It Up which came out a week before this did. I say that but the weird thing is, I had this on LP. I don’t know and can’t explain why. I later got it on CD and it was playing in my truck when my ex-wife and I almost wrecked going to WV to my “brother’s” mother’s funeral. We decided that we would never listen to that album in the car again. That’s changed, I’ve listened to it since. But, this was a different kind of rock; a step up from the raw production of their first album. Of course, they got all slick and polished for the next one. This was just the best. There I said it. VG+.
  • Earth, Wind & Fire – All ‘N All — I love EW&F but this was not my favorite from them. At times it seemed that they were just looking for words to put in the song. Not lyrics of course but “nonsense” words as a music teacher called them back in elementary school. And, also at times, it was like the key wasn’t important. It’s not a bad album but it isn’t a great album. VG++.
  • Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends – Ladies And Gentlemen — A live album by ELP which, while I can’t exactly say I’ve “gotten into,” I have started listening to more and more of it. I think my sense of progginess is coming through. I think I just made that word up. Yay me! I haven’t listened to this one yet. VG++.
  • Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Emerson, Lake & Palmer — The debut album by the aforementioned new “interest.” That makes seven  It has “Lucky Man” on it. I don’t know much more than that. I’ll keep you informed. VG+.
  • Bread – The Best Of Bread — We love us some Yacht Rock and while this album is a bit out of the proper Yacht Rock timeframe the subject matter and musical style is firmly planted in that era. Yacht Rock, technically is from around 1976 or ’77 through about 1981-82. This album came out in 1973, so you see what I mean. But, regardless, it is great stuff. VG++.

So, that’s the haul. Another thing odd about this is that The BCPF had little input. She usually finds a record or two, or heck has most of the records (which happens more than not) in the haul. So, during listening yesterday she picked things that were already in the collection. We switched up the TLD/UR special this week so listen to each episode of The Less Desirables to hear what that special is. Use Discogs to track your music collection, no matter the format.

Until tomorrow, keep spinnin’!

Salutations™!!

It’s been a while since I’ve played a video of street performers doing fantastic things so, why not today. Bucket players have always fascinated me. The title of the video is “the best drummer ever.” I don’t know about that, but he is really good. Enjoy!

Jeff Buckley

Salutations™!!

25 years ago today, one of the greatest albums I’ve heard was released. This album is Grace by the late Jeff Buckley. #304 on the RS list, I believe this is way too high for it. It should be in the top 100, at least. He had such a distinctive voice, one that was extinguished way too soon. Anyway, here’s a tune from this album, done by the man, himself, live from 1995.

Let's Active, Mitch Easter, WSNC

Salutations™!!

Today is the 31st anniversary (supposedly) of the Let’s Active album Every Dog Has His Day. Let’s Active, if you don’t know, was led by my friend Mitch Easter. He’s a local legend. He did a good bit of work with R.E.M when they first came about. He also was the producer of the second Heavens Sake album, Shinola. Heavens Sake was the first band to actually record in the Fidelitorium, his award-winning (at least it should be) studio in Kernersville. Anywhat! Enjoy the title track!
