Salutations™!!

Yesterday was “Parents’ Weekend” at Wake Forest University, so as anticipated, Mary’s Gourmet Diner was 30 folks deep outside the door so we’ll have to wait until next weekend to try the new menu there. The BCPF and I went on to Underdog Records, where we got a very short haul because it’s the end of the month and end of the quarter and that means funds are quite tight. So, here’s the “haul” if you can call it that…

  • Graham Parker – Another Grey Area — Graham Parker is the precursor to Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson and you can definitely hear it in his music. While this album came out after the others showed up, his influence is unmistakable. VG+.
  • The Motels – Little Robbers — Martha Davis has one of the best voices in pop, at least back in the early 80s. I haven’t heard her recently to know otherwise. But, this album is great and was a fun listen.

And, that’s it. Very short. And, we paid with quarters if that tells you how in a pinch we were. We spent the day catching up on other albums that we’ve purchased in the past few months but hadn’t a chance to listen to just yet. I will probably have a “Silent Sunday” next week as Underdog isn’t open this week as Jonathan and his best gal have gone on vacation and won’t be back until next Tuesday (at least at the store). Jonathan is in dire need of a vacation and I’m glad he’s going. We can catch up on back listening, perhaps. And, don’t forget that Underdog Records is THE Official Music Sponsor of The Less Desirables!

But, just because Underdog Records is closed, their website is open and you can order new vinyl 24/7/365. Jonathan said he was going to post some specials, so also continue to watch the Underdog social media for more on those.

And, while we stood in Underdog yesterday, I had my phone out with my Discogs app open. There were a few things that The BCPF found but I assured her we had them and weren’t missing out. But, also, we checked on the Motels album and we didn’t have it. So, keep up with your collection (CDs and cassettes, too) with Discogs. Use the randomizer feature, it’s fun.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Billy Joel, Kennebunk High School, Sounds Like Saturday

Salutations™!!

Today was the 41st anniversary of Billy Joel’s The Stranger album and it’s one of my faves by him, if not the fave. So, for today, here’s a really cool cover of what is probably my favorite Billy song (at least currently) and it’s done by a senior class at Kennebunk High School back in what looks like 2010. There were a couple of hiccups but it’s pretty fantastic. Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

So, here I am. 10:46pm. The BCPF has gone to bed after us watching a little bit of our current binge, Cheers. So, I, being a night owl (at least for staying up late) decide that I’m going to watch something on Netflix which has just become our Cheers outlet mostly. I choose something that I watched a few years back and felt like returning to it; Rent.  Then realize that I haven’t written a post today.

So, it’s still Friday, so I’m going to post something. How about a video? Yeah, that’s my go-to anymore. So, instead of a cover, I’m playing an official video. It’s from Rent and is probably its most popular tune. Enjoy!

Anniversary, Life, Life as It is, Marriage, reception, The BCPF

Salutations™!!

September 27 is the last anniversary of the year that The BCPF and I “officially” recognize. We celebrate our first date on July 21. We celebrate our engagement on July 31. We celebrate the big one, the wedding anniversary on September 2. And, we celebrate the anniversary of the big shindig in which our friends and family actually got together to celebrate our marriage, the “reception.”

De Médici Fountain in the Luxembourg Gardens, Paris (Honeymoon)

It was a great weather day. My bro-in-law and sister did a chicken stew for us. Mes ‘Rents provided the location. Golden Corral provided some rolls. Doug Davis, Lee & Susan Terry, Ken Mohan and Dan DesNoyers along with Patrick Ferguson played music for us. Doug (yes, that Doug Davis) joined me to perform the song I wrote for my new bride before we started dating.

Ma Mère strongly encouraged The BCPF to wear her dress. I wore my kilt. It was the last time that the original “DFK” was together, as well. To know what that means you’d have to know more about our past. Sorry if it’s vague.

Later that evening, we had a small get-together with alcohol (my parents’ place is “dry”) and had our pal Chris McDounagh making high-quality cocktails to our guests. It was a big difference in size and attendees. But, it was still pretty darn cool to have these folks. Yes, these anniversaries are about “us.” However, this day allowed everyone to join us at the same time. To us it was about “us” collectively, not just The BCPF and me. We thank all of you that were there that day. But, we also thank all of you that have been with us the entire time. You mean a lot to us.

To Stephanie, I love you immensely and truly, more and more each day. You are the reason I am alive and you are the reason I can do what I do. You are the heartbeat of The Less Desirables, of our marriage and of my existence. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I hope to post about our “Big 4” anniversaries for many more years to come.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

I just wanted to tell you guys that I had a little family drama today. Not drama like someone causing problems but an issue with a family member who was injured on the job. That took up some of the day and threw me behind with my stuff. Not his fault, it just happened. Then, I was working on ads for The Less Desirables and of course, recording them, so it threw me behind. I hadn’t had the opportunity to write my post today, so I’m going to just leave a video today. Since today was the 49th anniversary of the release of The Beatles’ Abbey Road album, here’s one of its best tunes live!

Salutations™!!

I was in The Less Desirables Studios in the Lab at Industry Hill today for a bit of work. In addition to The Man Who Ate the Town yesterday, last night we recorded a special episode of Fan Interference with TC’s ACC Network intern, Senior WFU volleyball player Hailey Brooke McFadden. I edited it today and posted it. You can hear that HERE.

Also, we recorded the latest episode of Apartment 5B. This week was great. Rory and Jeff’s Throat Punch of the week, we talk about three fathers/father figures who are idiots… er “father of the year” candidates. We also talk about Columbia House and BMG Music clubs and how they led many children of the 90s into early debt, even though they didn’t really know it.  We also talked about history for this day, including music, birthdays and other items. It’s good stuff. Listen to it HERE.

So, we gave you a good bit to listen to over the last few days so, go listen and enjoy it!

Smokehouse and we really enjoyed our meal. So, today, I wrote a (very) long blog post about it and because of a scheduling snafu (my fault), I flew solo on The Man Who Ate the Town Podcast. I also talked about Sweet Aromaz moving to their new space on the podcast, too.

Since I did the podcast solo and wrote an almost 2000-word post, I feel that was enough writing for today. You can read the post HERE and listen to the podcast HERE.

Thanks for either or both if you’re so inclined.

Salutations™!!

Yesterday was Mary Haglund’s birthday, so of course, we were there to celebrate with her at Mary’s Gourmet Diner. Then we went by Underdog Records and grabbed a few LPs. Not a big haul this week. Here’s it is:

Hall_and_Oates,_Abandoned_Luncheonette_(1973)

  • Peter Gabriel – Plays Live — I got this on Tuesday from Underdog Records but waited to mention it until today. This is a great live album from 1983, recorded on tour in 1982 for the Peter Gabriel (Security) album. There were some overdubs done but most of the stuff was live. I really enjoyed listening to it. VG+.
  • Daryl Hall & John Oates – Abandoned Luncheonette — The second studio album from H&O and it’s a beauty. There are some really fantastic tunes on here, including “She’s Gone,” the title track, “When the Morning Comes,” “Laughing Boy” (which happens to be my favorite track on the album after “She’s Gone”). Love the cover, as well. VG+.
  • Go-Go’s – Vacation — The title track is the best song on the album but the whole thing was a fun listen. I am glad we have it. VG+.
  • Electric Light Orchestra – Olé ELO — This is a compilation album from ELO and it has a lot of early songs on it and some of it I’m not a fan of. Nothing is wrong with it, just not my favorite songs. However, there are some of my favorite ELO tunes, too. “Can’t Get It Out of My Head,” “Evil Woman” and “Strange Magic” are some of my overall faves from the band. VG+.
  • Commodores – Nightshift — It’s not classic Commodores, by any means but it does feed my synth-pop early 80s R&B. I had this album on cassette back when it came out because I forgot to send in my card to not get the “selection of the month” from RCA Music Club (before it was BMG Music Club). Granted the only tunes that I really care about on here is the title track, “Woman in My Life” and “Animal Instinct.” VG+.

So, that was the short haul. As I’ve mentioned now, twice this week, Underdog Records is now THE Official Music Sponsor of The Less Desirables. There are some cassettes and CDs in Underdog but, of course, the focus is on vinyl. And, we will talk about a lot of music stuff that isn’t just vinyl, either. But, Jonathan is always getting fresh used inventory and restock throughout the week. You should follow their social media to find out what and when. And, you should listen to The Less Desirables to find out what the weekly TLD/Underdog special is.

I never shop without my Discogs app open on my phone to make sure I’m not getting duplicates and it’s great for my “random selection” picks, as well.

Vacation, meant to be spent alone.” – “Vacation” (Valentine/Caffey/Wiedlin)

Salutations™!!

Today is the 20th anniversary of KISS’ Psycho Circus album, as you know from my post yesterday. So, today I went looking for a respectable cover version and the first one I came across was my favorite of about five or six that I watched. This girl can sing! There was another with a KISS tribute band in Brazil and another with some goofy youngsters with a slightly-older overweight singer that did okay but this from Dorset was the best, to me. Happy anniversary PC and enjoy, Dear Reader!

Salutations™!!

The month of September is a huge month for KISS fans, even if they don’t know it. Why you may ask? Because the month of September is the anniversary month for the releases of TEN KISS albums. I’ve talked about Alive!, Animalize, Asylum, Paul, Gene, Ace, Peter, Lick It Up and Crazy Nights. Here’s the last one for September. It’s one of great debate, I’m sure. I am conflicted with it myself. And, I’m doing it a day early because Saturdays are scheduled for something else.

Psycho_Circus

Heavens Sake, the band that I was in and still the proudest of (we were greatly influenced by KISS), was still happening in 1998. It was in and out but it was happening. I had seen MTV’s “Unplugged” featuring KISS, along with a reunion of the original members while at drummer Bob’s apartment. We saw KISS actually reunited in makeup on the Grammys, introduced by Tupac. They had a reunion tour and we went. So, it was inevitable that there would be an album. This was the “reunion” album, Psycho Circus, in 1998 on September 22.

I say that in quotations because Peter really only played on Ace’s “Into the Void.” And, current KISS “Spaceman” Tommy Thayer played leads on all but four tunes. And, Bruce Kulick, former KISS member, played bass on the title track and “Dreamin'” and played the backward guitar track on “Within” and rhythm guitar on “Dreamin’,” as well. The drums, this time, weren’t played by Anton Fig in Peter’s stead, this time it was Kevin Valentine (who played on Revenge and Hot in the Shade, as well), known from Donnie Iris & the Cruisers and he was a touring drummer with Cinderella for a bit. Valentine also is an Emmy award-winning composer.

Whilst it was supposed to be a “return of KISS,” even in sound and feel it wasn’t old KISS. There were a lot of aspects of Carnival of Souls, the grunge-metal hybrid they were working on before getting the wise idea of “putting the band back together,” still on here. “Within” is the prime example of that, and in fact was demoed for that album. They had stuff that really sounded like most of the 80s-era stuff, especially Crazy Nights and Hot in the Shade. Again, this was a reunion album in concept only.

When you go out and play American football with all the rules, the same team, the same players, and call your team the New York Yankees, it’s still American football. You can call it a return to the “old KISS” but when the same two people are in charge of the songwriting and the same players are in the studio, it’s still the “new KISS.” Now, all that being said, I’m glad.

I loved the new KISS. I loved the old KISS. I still love KISS. As I said, up until Hot in the Shade, they couldn’t do any wrong, and, even with a few hiccups since that album, I still love them. It’s like that uncle that you know does dumb stuff but you still love him. The band evolved. They grew. They regressed. They moved forward. They moved backward. They adapted and that’s probably their biggest sin, here. I don’t think it would have been possible to return to Destroyer or Love Gun. I don’t think they forgot how to play and write like that, I just think it wasn’t them. If you listen to Sonic Boom or Monster (more on those next month), it’s not far from the same sound as this album.

I think they loved the idea of a KISS reunion but didn’t love being reunited. In a Rolling Stone interview in 2009, Paul said, “We tried to do a Kiss album, and it was an ill-fated attempt because there was no real band. For a band to make a great album, it has to share a common purpose…and we didn’t have it.” It was also revealed that Ace and Peter were trying to negotiate more money out of the “partnership.” You don’t negotiate money with Gene and Paul, not anymore. They feel they’ve survived without Ace and Peter, they kept the name going – regardless of the circumstances, and I think they knew that it was only a matter of time before it all came to an end.

In a very tongue-in-cheek attempt to return to some semblance of the old KISS sound, what do they do? They hire Bruce Fairbairn who was known for Bon Jovi’s Slippery When Wet and New Jersey albums, Aerosmith’s Permanent Vacation, Pump and Get a Grip, and AC/DC’s The Razor’s Edge. Now, all of those are fine and decent albums but do any of them scream what KISS would have sounded like as “old KISS?” All of those are the slickly-produced, sugary popped, the 80s/early 90s hair band mess. Which, I am quite fond of, actually. But, most folks aren’t when it comes to a KISS reunion.

People were disappointed. I wasn’t. Is it my favorite KISS album? Absolutely not. Is it top 10? Absolutely not. Is it top 20? Well, considering there are only 20 studio albums, it kind of has to be, right? It ranks higher than does either Sonic Boom, Monster, Hot in the Shade, Ace or Peter’s solos, and the gasper for this whole thing, Dressed to Kill. Yeah, I’ve really always been so-so about that one. Live with it. I do. This was the last good KISS record to me.

Contrary to what my blog always sounds like, I’m not anti-Ace or anti-Peter, I just don’t care. They squandered their chance and it’s okay that they milk what they can from what they had: sober, not sober, whining, moaning, happy, in, out… whatever. But, I’m really indifferent about their involvement in the band. I felt a little down when they didn’t all play together on stage for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but I’m kind of glad at the same time. Upon the announcement of the “End of the Road” tour that is coming to be the actual retirement tour (we’ll see), people are calling for Ace and Peter to be part of it. Nah. They don’t deserve it in my eyes. Plus, even on the reunion and “farewell” tours, Peter couldn’t keep up and Ace was Ace. Tommy does the same licks, doesn’t mess them up and still has feeling in his playing. Just let it go. If you’re the “F.You without Peter and Ace,” then go back and listen to the old stuff and relish what you had but shut the heck up. Stop living in the past. Paul and Gene aren’t going to change their minds and they don’t care if you don’t give them money. You’re just grandstanding at that point.

My favorite tunes on this album are the title track, “We Are One,” “Dreamin'” (which got Paul and Bruce sued for copyright infringement from Alice Cooper, he won, they settled out of court) and “Journey of 1,000 Years.” I could have done without “You Wanted the Best” because I’m not a fan of “cheerleading” songs and that’s all it was. “Into the Void” was okay. I do actually like “Within,” but then again, I liked COS, too. The rest are okay, too. I like it. Most don’t. I get it, but oh well.

Tomorrow will be 20 years since this came out. To me, it’s still the “new KISS album.” It’s hard to count Monster and ESPECIALLY Sonic Boom. I just listened to Psycho Circus again for good measure.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
