Salutations™!!

I’ve been putting off doing an OS update on the studio Mac. This is for several reasons. Just two of these reasons were: I knew it would take a while and I was worried that some of my podcast features/workflow/needs wouldn’t be compatible with the new update, called High Sierra, by the way.

Well, I was right on both counts.

The download and installation took around 80 minutes or so. I thought it would never finish. Really, I thought it would take about 20. I was sadly mistaken. It took so long that we had to cancel Fan Interference. I thought it would be done and then we’d just get back to what we were supposed to do. I’m kind of glad we canceled only because TC would have been waiting around for a while.

Once it downloaded and installed, the other part happened. A couple of things didn’t work and the settings needed to be adjusted. I’ll not get too technical and I don’t really expect many to know what I’m talking about but the sound needed to be remapped because the drivers for my audio interface were out of date and not compatible. So, those had to be remapped to match what it was in the previous version of the OS. I’m not the savviest in all that so it took a little bit to get it all back in order. Plus, the software interface that I used to record things (clips mostly) from the internet has been discontinued and I can’t get the last update to work. So, I had to find an alternative.

I was in the studio until 6:30p and that was two hours longer than I was supposed to be.  It’s fine. I got it all working, at least today I did. We’ll see what happens tomorrow, right?

Here’s hoping it all goes smoothly. Wish me luck.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Yesterday was such a beautiful day and it was really relaxed since The BCPF and I didn’t have to camp out for the hectic scene that was Record Store Day. We walked, ate at Mary’s Gourmet Diner, bought records at Underdog Records, listened to records, and ate at Willows Bistro before getting home before 10:20p. A good day. Here’s our haul:

R-1560033-1363118457-6629.jpeg

©A&M

  • Okkervil River – In The Rainbow Rain – When I make the commercials for Underdog Records on Wednesdays, I try to incorporate some of the music that is being released in said commercial to give a little taste (observing ‘fair use’ rules, of course) and this was one that I used. I liked it and it sounded like something The BCPF would like. I’m always on the lookout for new stuff she may like. New.
  • The Rolling Stones – Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out – A live Rolling Stones album that was released originally about two and a half months before I was born. This, however, is the 1986 reissue. It was considered to be an audiophile copy at that time. This is in NM condition.
  • Weezer – Pacific Daydream – The latest album by Weezer that was released around Halloween last year. This is a really good album. It was fun to listen to. NM.
  • Tim Curry – Simplicity – The last of Tim Curry’s solo albums, this one from 1981. I liked listening to the other one I have, Fearless, even if it wasn’t great it was fun. I hope this one is. VG++.
  • A Flock Of Seagulls – A Flock Of Seagulls – The eponymous debut album featuring what is probably their most famous song “I Ran (So Far Away)” as well as “Space Age Love Song.” It was in great shape and I can’t wait to listen to it. VG++.
  • Frank Sinatra – Strangers In The Night – $1 bin find that we just couldn’t pass on. I love me some “Ol’ Blue Eyes” and here it was in VG shape.
  • Sinatra – Basie – Sinatra-Basie (An Historic Musical First) – Another $1 bin find for the same reasons above. Plus, it was the first time Frankie and Count Basie recorded together. VG.
  • Mungo Jerry – Mungo Jerry – The listing on Wikipedia shows no trace of “In the Summertime” but the copy I have does. I know it was released as a single the same year as this, so I am thinking that it was an album-independent single that did well and any subsequent releases of the album included it. That’s what I have, I think. It’s in VG condition and was a $1 bin find.

So, here, I have to say when I played in GSO on Friday, we went to another record store, CFBG Records. Jonathan says we weren’t cheating on him but I feel like we were. But, we got some cool stuff, even if the prices were crazy expensive for used stuff. I guess we’re just spoiled by Jonathan. Here’s that haul:

  • The Byrds – Younger Than Yesterday – #127 on the RS List and containing one of my favorite Byrds (well, Dylan) songs, “My Back Pages.” It’s in VG++ condition.
  • The Fixx – Phantoms – I have grown to love The Fixx and I was excited to find this here (well, The BCPF found it). VG+.
  • Bob Dylan – Blood On The Tracks – #16 on the RS List (I need five to finish the top 25). From what I remember I didn’t much care for it, but The BCPF is a sucker for Dylan. Plus, I needed it for the list. VG+.
  • INXS – Listen Like Thieves – The INXS album with “What You Need,” the title tune and “This Time.” Very excited about it. VG+.
  • Midnight Oil – Diesel And Dust – The one with “Beds Are Burning” on it. We got that one for free. There is a long scratch all the way across the first side but I’m hoping it will still play. If not, I will use it as the first of my vinyl repair experiment that I plan on doing. I’ll say VG, but that may not be true.

So, a pretty good haul and we’re excited about it. Lots of good stuff in there. Jonathan is back in the saddle after getting caught up from Record Store Day. So, follow Underdog Records on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook and you’ll see what he is putting out each day. They’re open Tuesday to Saturday, 11a to 7p. Also, you can shop during off-hours by visiting their website.

Discogs lets me keep up with my collection so I don’t buy a lot of multiples and its Marketplace lets me find those hard-to-get items that Jonathan just never sees come through. It’s fun.

Until tomorrow, happy listening…

So, last night when The BCPF and I were driving back from GSO, we were listening to some yacht rock on Sirius XM and this song came on. I love the album that it’s from. I have the Fleetwood Mac album that it was on but I haven’t listened to it, yet. I will. Anywhat! Here ya go… Enjoy!

Salutations™!!

I meant to write this earlier today but time wasn’t on my side.

I mentioned in my post yesterday that I had yet another doctor’s appointment. It was with a dermatologist. Her name was Dr. Liu. My general practitioner referred me to her when I asked him about something on my back. no-c

About four months ago, I had a place that was a bit itchy on my back. It was one of those places that was under the skin but continued to itch no matter how much I scratched. I made it worse because I continued to scratch. At one point, it welted up and I kept on it. I rubbed it raw and it scabbed up. It became slightly discolored. It continued to itch.

So, I asked my doc about it and he said it could be eczema or it could be a basal cell (which could be cancerous). I don’t care who you are and no matter how minor it may be, you hear the “‘C’ Word” and that will mess with your mind. I’ll admit that I was feeling a bit sorry for myself and worried even though I told myself I wasn’t going to. It’s hard not to.

I had my appointment around 2:20p today and The BCPF went with me. She took about 45 seconds to look at it and then asked me to stand up (I was having a full-body exam). She said, “my goodness those are huge calves!” If you don’t know me, I have always had huge calves, even when I was a skinny kid. It was funny. We all laughed. After that, she told me that it was most likely a pinched nerve at one time and then I made it irritated and then it turned into, as she said, “a discolored itchy spot.” Not cancer. That was amazing to hear. A wash of relief came over me. That was great news. The BCPF and I high-fived each other. I didn’t want to say anything until I knew what the dealio was.

Again, I meant to talk about that earlier today but I didn’t sleep too well last night with the new CPAP. So, I napped a bit today. Tonight, I played some Cult songs with my pals Clay, Chad, Neal, and Lee. It was fun. We did pretty well. I’m tired. I’m going to bed.

Nite.

Salutations™!!

Let me tell you, Dear Reader… I’m worn out. Both emotionally and physically.

remstar-c-pro-flex-cpap

Same system I use.

I’ve not been sleeping the best I could be even though I have been using my CPAP machine. I sleep long hours but it’s not the best rest. Last night, for example, I slept over seven hours. But, I feel like I’m dragging during the day. Not to worry, though, I went today and had my machine recalibrated and also changed the humidifier. So, then I won’t worry about the cold dry air drying me out and therefore keeping my sleep a bit askew. I’m hoping that works.

Then, I had an appointment with my eye doctor because my monthly contacts have run out three months before my next scheduled appointment. That’s because I have had three of them actually break in my right eye, alone!! And, a few others popped out and disappeared. I used to not take my contacts out, even though they were made to leave in a few days at a time. Plus, my prescription was a little off. I complained about that to my optometrist. My old contacts did better and I got no headaches. So they adjusted my script and it seems to be doing okay. Plus, I got dailies instead of monthlies. So, let’s hope that helps, too.

But wait! There’s more. Tomorrow, I have an appointment with another doctor that I’m not going to talk about right now. That will come later. Tomorrow night, I’ll be playing with my partner-in-crime, Clay Howard along with our Threadbare Trio mate Neil Goode and our “+1” Chad Huskey and another friend of ours, Lee Wallace to perform songs by The Cult. I’ll probably talk more about that tomorrow, too. So, stay tuned.

Anywhat! That was my day and tomorrow is just as full.

Until then, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Bull’s Tavern, the Official Beer Sponsor of The Less Desirables, presents I’ve Been Drinking About You Double IPA from Casita Cervecería, The Less Desirables Beer of the Week.beer

Danielle brought us a good beer this week (well, every week). She brought this lovely gem from a nomadic brewery here in NC, Casita Cervecería. What does that mean? Well, think of it as if it’s a “pop-up” dinner at a restaurant. At a pop-up, a concept restaurant comes in and uses another restaurant’s facility, equipment, and space. This is what Casita is doing. They are creating “temporary” breweries inside other breweries.

This brew, as best we can tell, was made/brewed at Duck-Rabbit.

It was delicious. You got a waft of hoppiness in the beginning but that went away and what was left was a fruit-forward, honey-laiden, sweetish flavor. This is a good beer. It leaves a great lace, too. It’s a bit heavy on the ABV (7.5%) and I’m okay with that. It doesn’t taste boozy, though.

BeerAdvocate has it rated at 4.15/5 (Exceptional) and Untappd has it at 3.99 caps out of 5. I rated it 4.25 out of 5.

Have you had this brew? If so, what did you think? If not, or you just have a hankering for more, you can head to Bull’s Tavern and grab a pint or, if you have a growler, you can go fill it up with this delicious brew.

Tune in to hear the show and find out what Danielle, Bethany, Abigail and I think. You can listen HERE.

Blossom Dearie, Bob Dorough, Conjunction Junction, David McCall, Jimi Hendrix, Lynn Ahrens, Miles Davis, Schoolhouse Rock, The Man Who Ate the Town, The Rolling Stones, Three is a Magic Number

Salutations™!!

Usually, Tuesdays are for piggybacking The Man Who Ate the Town, but we didn’t do a podcast today so we’re not piggybackin’. bob_dorough

But, yesterday, a very important figure in my childhood passed away. Bob Dorough, the main songwriter behind the very popular 70s/80s children’s interstitial program, Schoolhouse Rock passed at the age of 94. He was also the musical director for the series. Some of his most famous tunes for this was “Conjunction Junction,” “Three is a Magic Number,” “My Hero, Zero,” “Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here,” “The Shot Heard Round the World” and “Rufus Xavier Sarsaparilla.”

But, Dorough wasn’t just about Schoolhouse Rock. He was a darned fine jazz musician that wrote for and played with Miles Davis, Sugar Ray Robinson (when he got into music) and Blossom Dearie, with whom he worked a few times on the Schoolhouse Rock. He was very accomplished by the time that advertiser David McCall called him in to help his kids learn their multiplication tables. They couldn’t remember the tables but knew the lyrics to every song by the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix by heart. So, then according to a TedX video from 2016, Dorough wrote “Three is a Magic Number.” That led to 11 more tunes about multiplication, including one for zero.

I have been collecting Schoolhouse Rock items for a long time. I had all of them on VHS when they first came out in the 90s and then, in the 00s I purchased the special edition DVD. But, I also have a four-disc box set of the songs on CD and I have a lyrics book as well as sheet music for selected songs from the series. I still watch them now and I still listen to them now.

Even the songs that he didn’t write were made possible because of his initial run of math-driven tunes. I know quite a few people who in ninth grade civics class had to recite the Preamble of the Constitution and the only way they got through it was by singing the song (“Preamble”) written by Lynn Ahrens. She was still under the direction of Dorough when she wrote that.

He sang a lot of the tunes that he wrote and even a few that he didn’t. He did the grandfather, father, and son, all three, for “Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here.”

He was active very late in life and did functions for schools, groups and fundraisers. He did TedX Talks and public appearances. He loved what he did and we loved him for it, at least we children of the late 70s/80s. Rest well, Old Friend and thank you for bringing so much joy to my life.

Salutations™!!

So, this Thursday commences the 2018 NFL Draft. And, in celebration, or preparation, of this event our The Less Desirables Network show, Fan Interference, does our (almost) annual draft special. Faninterference.png

This is never a quick event. Most of the time, Fan Interference is about an hour long. Usually just shy. This special, though, is almost two and a half hours long. Yeah, it was a bit grueling but we did it.

Ty Collins didn’t do this one alone, either. He brought out some big guns for this podcast. He had SEC expert Gabe Austin call in from Atlanta as well as PAC10 expert and host of UCLA Network’s Bruins Insider, Bryan Fenley. Each talked with TC about prospects from their conferences, player bios, where they may land and what to look for from each. TC also gives his own analysis of the players all across the country and where they may go, as well. It was an in-depth show and if you’re a fan of the NFL Draft and what your teams may do, you can listen HERE. We’d appreciate the listen.

Salutations™!!

So, the thing I want to say first is this: as much as I don’t mind the cold, sitting outside when the temperature drops to 41° and the wind comes barreling in at 3:45am in the morning and you’re in line for the Super Bowl of Records and Vinyl. That “ish” sucks like a Hoover. But, that’s exactly what we did right outside of Underdog Records. The BCPF and I camped along with a few of our vinyl friends all night Friday night/Saturday morning to be the first four (actually six but two pairs and two individuals) in the door to make sure we get our wants/wishlist filled for Record Store Day.

We went to eat at Mary’s Gourmet Diner directly after and then we went home and crashed for FIVE hours. We got up and listened a little before heading to Willows Bistro to have dinner with friends of ours, The Johnsons. Anywhat! You came for the list, right? I will say that all of these are brand new/NM (because I’m opening them). I’ll also put down who wanted and/or picked it up (Scorp/The BCPF). Here is the list:

  • Fleetwood Mac – The Alternate Tango In The Night – I love the original Tango in the Night. I was kind of disappointed with this. I mean, it’s good, but I was hoping for true alternate takes of “Big Love” and “Everywhere.” There were cool things on it, but I didn’t get my full satisfaction out of it but that’s okay. I’ll listen over and over anyways. This was my top RSD priority. (Scorp)
  • Living Colour – “Live From CGGB’s” Tuesday 12/19/89 – Actually picked up by The BCPF. She saw them open for the Rolling Stones on this tour and wanted to capture it. I’d think it was a little out of her wheelhouse but I was happy she got it. I have always loved what I’ve heard from Living Colour. 2xLP. (The BCPF)
  • The Cure – Mixed Up – A remastered remix album that came out on my 20th birthday (which, by the way, means 1990) and The BCPF loved it. It’s on a 2xLP picture disc set and it’s pretty awesome. I loved the remixes, too. I hadn’t heard them before.  2xLP. (The BCPF)
  • The Cure – Torn Down: Mixed Up Extras 2018 – A sequel to the 1990 remix album Mixed Up. It is even more remixes, done by Robert Smith. 2xLP. (The BCPF)
  • Adam Sandler – They’re All Gonna Laugh At You! – My favorite Adam Sandler album. I got the only one that Jonathan got in. I don’t know how many he ordered but he only received one. I think it’s Sandler’s best. A mix of really great sketches and really good songs. There may be a clunker here and there but overall, it’s great! I’m glad I was where I was in line because the guy behind us wanted it and he drove all the way from New Bern to do his RSD shopping. Sorry, Jason. Looking at his haul though, I’d say he spent close to if not over $1000 that day, so I figured I saved him a few bucks. 2xLP. (Scorp)
  • Ella Fitzgerald – Ella At Zardi’s – Zardi’s Jazzland was a jazz-focused music venue in Los Angeles in the ’50s. It was world-famous and a lot of top-name jazz folks played there, including, Ella. There were only two of these that Jonathan got and it was a top priority for The BCPF, which because our pal Michael got the other, left our friend Bill out. Sorry, Bill. 2xLP (The BCPF)
  • Wilco – Live At The Troubadour L.A. 1996 – The BCPF is a Wilco fan and this is a 2xLP of the band in their heyday, at their peak. I like Wilco pretty well. It’s not my favorite but it is cool. (The BCPF)
  • The Sundays – Reading, Writing And Arithmetic – The absolute top priority for The BCPF, this completes the Sundays trilogy. It’s a reissue but she had them all on CD when she was younger. I’m glad she got it. (The BCPF)
  • Jeff Buckley – Live At Sin-é – The Sin-é Coffeehouse in Manhattan’s East Village was a jumping in point for a good amount of well-known musicians, including Mr. Buckley. This 4xLP is the complete version of his 4-song EP that was released in 1993. The “Legacy” collection (4xLP) was released in 2003 but only on CD. I could be wrong but I believe this is its first time released on vinyl. (The BCPF)
  • Madonna – The First Album – Picture disc of Madge’s first album with “Borderline,” “Holiday” and “Lucky Star.” It was surprisingly inexpensive. It will be fun listening to it. (The BCPF)
  • Neil Young – Roxy Tonight’s The Night Live – A live concert from Neil Young recorded in 1973, although the official release isn’t until next Saturday. Yay us for getting an early copy. It’s 2xLP but only three sides. The fourth side is etched. (The BCPF)
  • Pink Floyd – The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn – The mono version of the debut Pink Floyd album. I wasn’t going to get it but then I figured, I can’t not get it. I won’t get this chance again unless I am ready to pay 20% markup on them. I’ll admit this isn’t a favorite of mine but it is needed for the RS List (#347) but it’s a limited edition. (Scorp)
  • David Bowie – Welcome To The Blackout (Live London ’78) – As the title suggests, it’s live from 1978. Bowie wasn’t ever “not good” and I loved the late 70s/early 80s stuff. This is a 3xLP set, too. (Scorp)
  • David Bowie – Bowie Now – Compilation rerelease on white vinyl. (The BCPF)
  • Lou Reed – Animal Serenade – A 3xLP live album recorded in Los Angeles at the Wiltern Theatre in 2003 after The Raven. The show features a drummer-less band (including Mike Rathke on guitar/synth, bassist, vocalist Fernando Saunders, and the cello of Jane Scarpantoni). Reed delivers dramatic readings of some of his most compelling work. In addition, Anohni, of Antony and the Johnsons fame, contributes background vocals throughout and sings the lead on “Set The Twilight Reeling” and “Candy Says.” (The BCPF)
  • Duran Duran – Thanksgiving Live – The Ultra Chrome, Latex And Steel Tour – A 2xLP of Duran Duran on tour in 1997. (Scorp)
  • Duran Duran – Budokan – A brief live performance from Duran Duran in Japan. There are only nine songs, but they sound fantastic. Simon’s voice is on point and you can really hear everything coming through. (Scorp)
  • Dylan & The Dead – Dylan & The Dead – Just what it sounds like it would be. You can guess who picked this one up but I’ll give you a hint, it was not me. (The BCPF)
  • The Rolling Stones – Their Satanic Majesties Request – I’m very surprised this wasn’t on the RS List. A cool lenticular cover and gatefold packaging. I like KISS’ version of “2000 Man” better, but this isn’t bad. It’s on blue-splattered vinyl. (The BCPF)
  • Human League – Secrets – Vinyl debut and reissue of their 2001 album. (Scorp)
  • Sufjan Stevens – Mystery Of Love – 10″ transparent vinyl of Sufjan Stevens single from the soundtrack of Call Me By Your Name. (The BCPF)

So, by my count, that’s 13 for The BCPF and 7 for Scorp. Not a contest at all and it just is what it is. We both got what we wanted and that’s cool. The only thing I missed was the reissue of the Whitesnake ’87 album which I’ll find somewhere later. It was just a good haul. If I haven’t already told you how much we paid, privately, you’ll have to just guess. No reason to broadcast that, but I will say it was over $70.

Jonathan was swamped but in a great mood when we left, I hope it stayed that way and I hope he made all his money back and more. I believe he’s open today for a rare Sunday opening. That may have changed but may not have. Check the Underdog Records social media channels.

Surprisingly, Discogs had all of them in by the time I got to them, however, some were just the European versions (which should be about the same), so I’ll go looking for the US versions to make the collection listing more accurate. That’s it, I’m still tired and I’m out!

Prince, Sounds Like Saturday, Super Bowl

Salutations™!!

So today marks the two year anniversary since we lost one of the most prolific and important musicians in my lifetime. Prince Rogers Nelson died from an opioid overdose in what is probably a heinous crime that resulted in someone getting a slap on the wrist. Oh well, right? Pshaw. Anywhat, here’s one of his more recent memorable television moments. The Super Bowl halftime extravaganza. It was one of, if not the best halftime show for the big game. This has some crappy edits in it but it’s the whole performance without commentary, so… enjoy. RIP Purple One, U R missed.

“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called ‘life.’ Electric word, life. It means forever and that’s a mighty long time, but I’m here to tell you there’s something else: The Afterworld; a world of never-ending happiness. You can always see the sun, day or night. So when you call up that shrink in Beverly Hills, you know the one, ‘Dr. Everything’ll-Be-Alright,’ instead of asking him how much of your time is left, ask him how much of your mind, baby. ‘Cause in this life, things are much harder than in the Afterworld. In this life, you’re on your own. And if de-elevator tries to bring you down,
go crazy (Punch a higher floor!).” – “Let’s Go Crazy” (Prince)
