City Beverage, the Official Beer Sponsor of The Less Desirables, presents Torch Pilsner from Foothills Brewing, The Less Desirables Beer of the Week. download

We had this on the show tonight. I have to say that pilsners are my least favorite beer style. Yeah, I know I talk about not liking IPAs but I can sometimes find some that I like. Pilsners to me are a waste of time and resources, at least when it comes to me. If you like pilsners, then that’s great. You may like this one.

I know that many people like this one. It won medals at both the 2016 and 2017 Great American Beer Festival. So, we had like the best pilsner in America. So, for those of you who do like them, this is your pilsner. I know I’ve already said that, but it is.

BeerAdvocate rates it as 3.65/5 (Good). Untappd has it as 3.37 caps out of 5. It has an ABV of 5.3%. Have you had it? What did you think? If you’ve not had it or just have a hankering for more, head to City Beverage and grab your sixer. Tune in, now, to hear what Danielle, Bethany, Josh and I think of it.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

“Legend has it that, well over a century ago, citizens of western Bohemia grew so dissatisfied with their beer they dumped it in the streets. So a new style evolved, in the city of Pilsen, combining the soft local water with pale malts and earthy Saaz hops. And the Bohemians were pleased. Our pilsner adheres closely to that original style. ’Cause we dig happy Bohemians.” – Foothills

Salutations™!!

Today on The Man Who Ate the Town Podcast, Kelly and I talked about Wise Man 1wmbBrewing’s one year anniversary and the new menu that Finnigan’s Wake rolled out yesterday. Kelly and I want to be more than just a little podcast about menus and “on this day.” We want to talk about food issues and topics, not only in WSNC but all around. We will concentrate on WSNC but we aren’t opposed to venturing out.

What would you like to hear us talk about? We have some topics “on the stove,” if you will, but we want to be a podcast that you feel like you’re part of. So, again, I ask… What would you like to hear us talk about?

You can get the skinny on what we talked about today by visiting HERE.

Salutations™!!

I don’t know that I’m getting the satisfaction I was looking for in the musical list that I talked about listening to. I listened to a couple and I’m just not thinking I’m feeling it. I’m still going to do it, I figure, but I want something that I can talk about.

vinyl

I don’t do this with my records…

When I look at the responses and read times of this blog, I get the most traffic from two types of posts. The first is food. Every time I post about food, even if it’s just a piggyback from The Man Who Ate the Town, my numbers, likes and follows all go up.

The other is music. When I was doing the RS list, they would also get a lot of reads and hits. Not that I’m looking for hits, but the reason you write a blog post is for people to read it, right?

So, I’m thinking to myself, I listen to records many times a week. I listen to new and old stuff. I listen to things that are on the RS list. I listen to things that are ‘classics.’ So why don’t I write posts about what I’m listening to, record wise?  So, I figure that’s what I’m going to do. Not all the time, not every day. Sometimes it will be something on a streaming service. It will be from lists. It will be from discographies. It will be from suggestions.

I may or may not be critical. I may or may not be fanboyish. I’m just going to be honest with you. Each time. It’s opinion. What I think, what I feel, what I think should be said. That’s all I ever have done.

I welcome differing opinions. I like discussion. A lot of what I’ve posted on my personal Facebook page and Instagram has garnered a lot of discussions. I enjoy that and am proud of that. So, why not go with it? I think I will.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!R-3734657-1342257119-1574.jpeg

Yesterday was a typical Saturday with The BCPF. We had our breakfast and then to Underdog Records for our take. Then, we did run to see friends of ours who are moving to Denver (the one in Colorado). Then home to listen to the wonderful sounds we purchased on vinyl and then on to Willows. Here’s what we got from Underdog Records:

  • Calexico – The Thread That Keeps Us – Brand new from Calexico. The BCPF loves this stuff. It’s hard to keep track of what kind of music you’re listening to with them as their styles change quite frequently within the same album. It’s cool but weird. A friend of mine said that you could classify it as “Post-Devotchka acoustic meandering since you asked.” Thanks, Tony. I liked it. So did The BCPF. New.
  • Eno – Here Come The Warm Jets – #432 on the RS List. Brian Eno is a weird dude. Very weird. But, I dug this and the next album. New.
  • Eno – Another Green World – #429 on the RS List. Both of these are very ambient and proggy. I dug them both. New.
  • The Outfield – Play Deep – This actually wasn’t from Underdog. I purchased it from Discogs Marketplace. I had wanted it for a while. I had it on cassette when I first moved to WSNC at the age of 15. I wore that out. I then had it (still do) on CD and that thing is scratched to all hades. I had forgotten how amazing the entire album was until we listened to it yesterday. I love it start to finish and will play it often. It won’t be just thrown in the collection. VG+/NM-.
  • Lou Reed – New Sensations – Yes, I hate Velvet Underground but I can actually listen to Lou. VG.
  • Yes – Drama – A VG+ copy of some proggy goodness.
  • Various – Weird Science – Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack – VG copy just because I wanted it.
  • Devo – Freedom Of Choice – The “Whip It” album. VG.
  • Murray Head – Say It Ain’t So – So, we all know that Murray Head is the “One Night in Bangkok” guy. We also know that he was Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar (the original cast). Did you know that he’s Andrew Head’ brother in real life? Andrew played Rupert Giles on the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Anywhat! This was a fantastic album. We really enjoyed it. VG+.
  • Billy Squier – Emotions In Motion – Had to have this gem, especially since it was in the $1 bin.
  • Various – High Voltage – A K-Tel collection. I love these things. I like when they’re in the $1 bin, too. VG.
  • Suzanne Vega – Suzanne Vega – $1 bin find. Vega is a good storyteller. A lot of her stuff sounds the same but you can’t say she doesn’t have a “style” about her. It was a good album to listen to. VG.
  • New Birth, The – Golden Classics – Yeah, once I got the New Birth bug, I still gotta grab them. $1 bin find. VG.

It was a slow day at Underdog Yesterday, but I believe it picked up later. I could just hang out there all the time. I’m sure I’d annoy the dickens out of Jonathan, though. Cheap plug here, listen to The Less Desirables to hear the latest TLD/Underdog special for the week.

I use Discogs to catalog my entire collection. If I’m Underdog and find an album that I (thought) needed, I can check to see if I actually already have it. Plus, there are several versions of many of the recordings, you can use the identifiers to find out which version you have. And, as you can see from me doing so, you can purchase stuff from the Marketplace. I love Discogs.

Elton John, Music

Salutations™!!

Sir Elton John announced that he’s retiring. Well, he’s going to do a “farewell tour.” The thing is that farewell tour is going to last about three years.

Here is the GMA interview about it

I think Sir Elton has dropped a bit of pizazz as of late and it’s not the same. I figured he was about to retire anyway. I hope the tour goes well for him.

Life, Winston=Salem Ambassadors, WSNC

Salutations™!!

Today, the Winston-Salem Ambassadors had their first ever year-end meeting. I don’t feel right about calling something “annual” until it’s been done more than once. So, they can call it an “annual” meeting but to me, that needs to wait until next year. Anywhat!!20294073_1914158728858038_1171995893913071413_n

The first of these meetings happened today. It was great to see my pals from my time on the board of advisors – I departed the board on January 1st – to see the fruits of our labor from last year.

It was a quaint, yet packed house at the Winston Cup Museum in downtown WSNC. Mackenzie Cates-Allen presided over the ceremonies as the president of the organization. She’s a great leader. We heard from Councilfolk D.D. Adams and Derwin Montgomery. I sat beside my friend, Councilman John Larson, to one side and pal, Teri Watkins of Spinfrogs to the other.

We learned more about what Ramkat will be (that’s where Ziggy’s 2.0 used to be) and more about Winston’s Fashion Week. The board gave out the first ever Everyday Awards to several deserving folks.

A new friend of mine was at the meeting and I have been meaning to talk to him about some business things for the last few months. We went to Finnigan’s Wake and had what ended up being about a two and half hour or even possible three-hour talk over a beer and a few chicken tenders. His name is Tim and he’s married to someone very important to me from my past. So, that on top of his skills, talents, and knowledge, I really wanted to talk with him.

I think it was a productive meeting. I think it was a fruitful meeting. I think it could lead to good things. If nothing else, we kindled what I feel could be a great and strong friendship. In fact, I sent his wife a message and said that I think I love her hubs. She said she can see a “bromance” starting. I have a few of those and I dig them, so yeah, I’m down. Keep reading and watching to see what this develops into!

Salutations™!!

City Beverage, the Official Beer Sponsor of The Less Desirables, presents Hopslam Double IPA from Bells Brewery, The Less Desirables Beer of the Week. bellslogo-3c-insp

Yep, it’s Hopslam time. Some call it “hypeslam” because it’s a lot of hoops you have to jump through to get any. The bottle shops are one thing but only the bars with the big Bell’s sales get this.

You know I don’t like IPAs very much. Well, I don’t know about that, but they’re certainly not my favorite. Double IPAs, however, I do like a good bit. Still not my favorite, but a good bit.

And Hopslam is a good representation of that.

Every year, Hopslam is released in limited quantity and it’s a different recipe every year. This is 10% ABV, always a bonus. BeerAdvocate has it as 4.46 out of 5.  Untappd has it at 4.35 caps out of 5. I liked it. I rated it at 4.75 out of 5.

Have you had it? What did you think? If you’ve not had it, or just have a hankering for more, you should head down to City Beverage and grab your sixer. But, you need to hurry because when they’re gone, they’re gone. This is a very limited edition. Hurry on down there.

Listen to this week’s episode of The Less Desirables and hear what Danielle, Bethany, Jeff and Tim think about it.

“Starting with six different hop varietals added to the brew kettle & culminating with a massive dry-hop addition of Simcoe hops, Bell’s Hopslam Ale possesses the most complex hopping schedule in the Bell’s repertoire. Selected specifically because of their aromatic qualities, these Pacific Northwest varieties contribute a pungent blend of grapefruit, stone fruit, and floral notes. A generous malt bill and a solid dollop of honey provide just enough body to keep the balance in check, resulting in a remarkably drinkable rendition of the Double India Pale Ale style.” – Bell’s Brewery

Salutations™!!

I tell you what, Dear Reader. I am tired. I know that’s a recurring theme as of late. I’m always tired. But, this time it was because I was up late submitting those records into Discogs like I mentioned yesterday.

Let me tell you, the foreign language ones were a major pain. I had to do a lot of digging and searching to find out who contributed what when. I mean, that’s what I rely on Discogs for, to tell me all that info. So, there were searches, cross-referencing and double checking. Many of the songwriters had just their last names and I have to admit I’m not all that familiar with the German composers/songwriters, especially the stuff I was looking up, and Discogs is really stringent about getting the correct info submitted.

And, I see why that’s important.

I had to do the songwriters, the instrumentalists, the singers, the producers, the cover artists, the photographers, the copyrights and so on. Of course, only what is listed on the album liner notes and or sleeves are what is needed for Discogs. They also want pictures of your version. There are variants, different pressing plants, different colored vinyl, things that can completely change the version. So, you need to use the one that you’re familiar with; the one you have. I have found that there are several versions of most of the albums I have. So, when I do the input for my records, I have to make sure, using matrix/runouts that I have the correct version that I’m holding.

Is it the end of the world if I’m wrong?  Heck no. But, if I am going through the trouble of documenting this, I want it to be right, ya know? Someone, many someones actually, sat and did the same thing I did last night over the years so that the stuff that we buy is there for us to find out more about and archive the records that we have. Accuracy is a must.

And, for there to only be seven that wasn’t in the database, considering the sheer amount of albums that exist, that’s pretty remarkable. I did tell The BCPF that we need to check that our classical and foreign language selections are actually in there and unless we absolutely have to have it, can we please skip it if not? Nah, I’ll still buy them. So, I’m not going to wait until Sunday, I’m going to tell you what I put in.

  • Great Lake Swimmers – Great Lake Swimmers – The BCPF really got into this by listening to Spotify. It’s really in the realm of her stuff. It is a reissue from 2003. There were other versions but, again, this reissue wasn’t in the database. It is now.
  • Johannes Brahms, Nürnberger Symphoniker – Concerto For Violin And Orchestra In D Major, Op. 77 – This was the first of the foreign language ones. It was actually a very great NM copy.
  • Benjamin Britten – The Holy Sonnets Of John Donne; Seven Sonnets Of Michelangelo – This was a lot of data entry but not too awful. The BCPF was excited that she found this because it’s Benjamin Britten conducting his own work. Apparently, that’s a big deal. VG+
  • Anny Flore – Mon Cahier De Chansons N° 2 – This was (as it says) number two of I believe ten 10″ albums. It’s good French pop music. We love that stuff. VG+.
  • The Rolling Stones – December’s Children (And Everybody’s) – Yes, this was the fifth Stones studio album and yes, it was an official release and it’s all over Discogs. However, this was a Korean release. The sleeve is paper thin (not cardstock or cardboard) and the label is glued on and handwritten dated from 1968 (it came out in 1965). I’m pretty sure it is a bootleg but that’s okay. It’s Good at best. The cover sleeve is Fair at best.
  • Die Original Hoch- Und Deutschmeister, Julius Herrmann – Christmas Carols Played By The “Deutschmeister” Band – Yeah… all the songs are listed in English but the band and the conductor are German. It’s hard to find anything on Herr Herrmann. So, there it is, a lot of Christmas tunes done with a German brass band. VG.
  • Various – Oktoberfest-Oktoberfest: So Singt’s Und Klingt’s Auf Der Wies’n – This album alone took me almost two hours to enter. Getting the right principals and input took a lot of searching. I would say I spent around 10-15 minutes per song finding out the info about the participants. Google was definitely my friend. But, even that was several pages deep. This is a VG copy.

All of it came from Underdog Records, for sure. That’s where 96% of my vinyl comes from. That’s my favorite store to stand in. I love my vinyl collection. And while I’m tired, it was worth it because I was doing research and handling the vinyl. One of the joys of having vinyl and CDs and even cassettes. You can hold the music in your hand. You can’t do that with streaming. I loved it. I don’t want to do that input often, but every once in a while is cool.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
