Salutations™!!

I liked the last album, surprising even myself. It was heavy and I like that, but, now, I’m looking for something a little less harsh. Eugene said he’ll have some time to catch up in the next bit and, hopefully, Jon can, as well. Let’s do this…

#34 – Little Caesar by Little Caesar.

The first thing I thought was, haven’t we already done a Cult album? And, of course, we had but you can’t judge a whole album by one song, especially the first one. That song (musically, vocally) sounded just like the Cult to me. However, that’s where the comparisons ended.

And, that’s where the blandness ended, as well. The rest of the album gave us good rock, soul (literally), hair band-quality power ballads, and just good music. And, really, the first song wasn’t that bland, I just needed wanted to take a jab at that Cult album (which wasn’t all that bad, really). It did, however, sound just like a Cult song.

Ron Young has an amazing voice. The power in “Chain of Fools” (yes that “Chain of Fools”) alone should prove my point, but don’t stop with that one. Listen to his vocals in “In Your Arms,” “From the Start,” “I Wish It Would Rain” and “Cajun Panther” – just to name a few – to continue my argument. When you can wail during the heavy rock and bring an artful rasp to the oomph in the ballads, that’s a great singer.

The guitar tandem of Loren Molinare and Apache (Jimmy Hayne) is riffy, melodic and tasteful. They’re not trying to blaze through anything but they’re not slackers, either. It’s good chops and good stuff. Fidel Paniagua’s bass is deceptively subtle but he’s doing some serious walking patterns and runs. Great bass playing. Tom Morris’ drumming is not flashy but effective. He’s bombastic, thunder-like, and definitely solid. I would love to know who the female backup singer on “Little Queenie” is because she’s awesome.

There’s not a lot of info on this album or the band on the web. I’d venture that this is probably the most love it’s gotten in a while. That’s a shame. According to Wikipedia, the band didn’t gain a lot of popularity because of their tattooed image. I think that’s a bit of a stretch. Mötley Crüe were tatted head-to-toe and they were still pounding it out and in the spotlight. So, I call bull shite on that. I think their biggest problem was that this debut album happened in 1990. The hard rock genre was getting a bit over saturated and, frankly, tired. What I think is a shame is that other bands that came out at that time got a good bit of attention but this, a band of immense talent, was left “in the basement.” The album was produced by Bob Rock which has a big name, but tired is tired and I think the market was flooded by then. The genre was pretty much its own demise, in my opinion.

There’s not a song on this album that I don’t at least “like.” My favorites, however, are the more melodic ballad-like tunes, such as “In Your Arms,” “From the Start,” “Midtown” and the Temptations hit, “I Wish It Would Rain.” I like this album’s version of “Chain of Fools” as much as (if not slightly more than) Aretha Franklin’s. For whatever reason, she’s not my favorite right now. I can’t put my finger on it. But, I love Young’s voice in that. Don’t skip over “Cajun Panther,” “Little Queenie,” “Hard Times” or “Wrong Side of the Tracks” either. You won’t be disappointed.

Eugene, I love this album, thanks for the introduction. Jon, see you on here soon.

City Beverage, the Official Beer Sponsor of The Less Desirables, presents Boulevard Brewing Company‘s Unfiltered Wheat, The Less Desirables Beer of the Week. 20170830_142201

Spencer, at City Beverage, said that this is their #1 selling wheat beer. I know Boulevard does great beer and I am looking forward to this one. It’s only 4.4% ABV so you can drink a few and not be compromised in your inhibitions. The IBUs are only 14 so it isn’t bitter at all, either. Sounds like my kind of beer. Being that it’s unfiltered, there will be sediment and other stuff floating around in the glass. I’m good with that. The trick is to pour 75% of the beer, swirl the bottle (or can) and empty the rest of the brew into the glass. Get all that stuff in the glass. Drink up and enjoy. I don’t know how Caitlin will take to this, but that’s just something we’ll have to wait to see, right? Right.

BeerAdvocate has something strange. The majority of the votes were at 79 (Okay) while the Bros Score is at 87 (Very Good). I don’t see many times where the Bros have a higher rating than the base because they’re pretty fastidious in their ratings. So, we’ll see how we compare to them. Untappd has the beer at 3.59 caps out of 5. Have you had this beer? What did you think? If you haven’t or just have a hankering for more, head to City Beverage and grab your sixer. Tell them this is the TLD beer of the week and you will get 5% off your order. Tune in later tonight or early tomorrow to see what Caitlin, Danielle, Terri and I think about it. Groot already wants his own bottle.

3B, school

Salutations™!!

Well, here we are again. The first day of school. 11 years in, now and I wish I could go back and find each year’s first day and see the progression, but that doesn’t seem likely. Kindergarten to, now, 10th Grade. It’s hard to believe that he’s already to this stage.

Such a small kid with that funky rat tail to full-on long hair to a short buzz to this near-giant of a young man with a mop top. That’s my boy. And, the years come fast. Very fast. Hopefully, he’ll get in there today and enjoy it and want to do better in school than he has in the last seven years. Do I hold out hope? Yes. Do I hold my breath? Nope. 20170828_090008.jpg

Well, enjoy the pic and marvel at my boy’s growth and know that I love that guy. So very much. I can’t say I understand the shirt, though. Happy first day of school, kid.

  • Kiss – Creatures Of The Night (the last of the original makeup albums, I had to order this off of Discogs as it was back ordered through distributors, new)

  • Iron And Wine – Beast Epic (brand new and I’ve seen him once, new)
  • Steven Wilson – To The Bone (really great album once I realized it was to be played at 45RPM, bone colored vinyl, new)

  • Led Zeppelin – Coda (clean copy)

  • The Rolling Stones – Undercover

That’s quite the haul. It’s hard to tell what I missed yesterday because we were a little late getting there and I know Clay had already been through. We were quite excited with this haul and it’s already been good listening. If you’re thinking of getting into vinyl, getting back into vinyl or just want to expand your vinyl collection, then you need to get by Underdog Records. They have turntables, receivers, speakers, cleaning accessories and more. Listen to The Less Desirables each week to hear what the Underdog/TLD special is for that week. And use Discogs to archive and log your vinyl collection so you always know what you have.

a/perture cinema, the Official Movie Sponsor of The Less Desirables, presents The Less Desirables Movie of the Week, The Commitments (1991), starring Robert Arkins, Glen Hansard and Andrew Strong.

Per IMDb: “When Jimmy Rabbitte wants to start a band, he has open auditions at his house.”

That’s a pretty minimalist description, really. Jimmy Rabbitte (Arkins) is an early-twenties music fan in Dublin and wants to start a soul band that he can manage. He has friends, guitarist Outspan Foster (Hansard) and bassist Derek Scully (Kenneth McCluskey), who are the foundation and he holds open auditions at his family’s home where his dad, played by one of my favorite Irish actors, Colm Meaney, is a huge Elvis fan and thinks that the whole idea is preposterous: they’re in Dublin, there’s not a lot of “soul” in Dublin.

During auditions, a veteran trumpet player named Joey “The Lips” Fagan (Johnny Murphy) comes and helps direct the band in the right direction. Jimmy thinks that “The Lips” is too old but he soon realizes that Fagan can be beneficial. Jimmy approaches the neighborhood screw-up, Declan “Deco” Cuffe (Strong) to be the singer after hearing him sing at a wedding reception. He approaches his friend Bernie McGloughlin (Bronagh Gallagher) to be a backup singer because he wants her to bring his crush Imelda Quirke (Angeline Ball) along to also be a backup singer. Add in Natalie Murphy (Maria Doyle) into the mix and you have the Commitmentettes. Then, add a drummer, saxophone player and pianist and you have yourself a band. A no-experience-having band (other than Joey “The Lips”) but with some heart. If only the band could get along.

There is turmoil the entire time. Deco gets along with no one, people sleeping with other people, egos and jealousy. All of that. It’s in there. How does the band even survive? Well, you’ll have to watch it to find out the answer to that question.

The only person who didn’t perform their own instrument in the film was Johnny Murphy who played Joey “The Lips” Fagen. But, the rest of the film featured real musicians who played their own instruments.  The setting is gritty and very “blue collar” which was the point. The whole film was gritty. It was, at times, hard to understand what they were saying as the Dubliner accent was very heavy. The realism and human nature of the film came through prominently.

The one musician that I would have liked to have had more time in the sun was Glen Hansard (Outspan Foster). He was the music writer behind the musical and film Once. From that film came the tune “Falling Slowly.” The BCPF is a fan of his and I’ve grown to like what I’ve heard. The film had two soundtracks, which featured the cast recordings of many soul tunes from the 60s on. The first stayed on the Billboard Top 200 for over 70 weeks and reached a peak of #8.

Rotten Tomatoes has it at 88% Fresh with an Audience Score of 90%. IMDb rates it at 7.6 stars out of 10. I watched the film on Netflix and I will rate it 3.75 stars out of 5. It was good, interesting and entertaining but it wasn’t exceptionally moving. Have you seen it? If so, what did you think? What film would you like to read/hear me review?

Salutations™!!

I know it seems like this blog has just become an advertisement for all the things that I 20247780_706025782926597_4164974404776543061_odo, but all the things I do in my life are “life” events. And, it just so happens that the life event today is a little performance piece called Threadbare Trio +1 at Test Pattern. But, this isn’t the regular Threadbare Trio set where we offer comedy, acoustic covers and relaxed atmosphere. This is basically the Threadbare Trio (which is Neal Goode, Clay Howard and me) plus our pal Chad Huskey doing Silver Alerts (also Clay and me along with Corkey McClellan, Doug Davis and a rotating roster of guitarists) songs. That is, we’ll be doing Clay Howard songs.

Now, we may fit a few covers in there and I’ll be acting the fool, as always. So, we’re thinking this will be a hybrid of both bands. A little bit of this, a little bit of that. But, we’re not the only ones playing tonight (which is usually what the Threadbare Trio does). No, we have guests. We have our cool friend Adam Bennett going to do a 30-minute set to open the show and then Arrow Beach will be on to support their brand new debut album. Finally, we’ll go on last, doing our thing.

We’d love to see you there. Test Pattern is a cool little dive (that loves being such) that has a great beer selection, makes good craft cocktails and just has a pretty darn good vibe. Plus, they’re home of The Less Desirables and the entire The Less Desirables Network. The festivities start around 9pm and will go until we’ve had enough fun. Test Pattern is located at 701 North Trade Street. We can’t wait to see you, Dear Reader!

Salutations™!!

Last week was a so-so week, so I liked the music didn’t like the singer. That’s okay, it was still a decent album. Waiting on Eugene‘s and Jon‘s take. Let’s hit this one as I feel like I’m going to put my head through a concrete block wall.

AnthraxAmongTheLiving

©Megaforce/Island Records

#33 – Among the Living by Anthrax.

Holy schnikes – Charlie Benante! That guy plays drums at Mach 4 speed. The speed of the other instruments is noteworthy but this dude has to throw his whole body into hyper drive to get those speeds. The others have to keep up with him. That’s amazing.

I have always known about Anthrax but to me, they were second-rate Metallica. I know that’s not truly the case, but I didn’t know that then. Speed/thrash metal has never been my thing, but I can certainly appreciate it for what it is. Behind the thrash, though, there are some really good chord progressions and decent songs. I don’t think I really ever took the time to listen to them. That’s a shame. I’m admitting my shame right here, right now.

Joey Belladonna has a great voice when he uses it. On the title track and a few others, he seems to skate through on the melodies. Then, at other times he’s using his tenor voice to its fullest capacity. It’s just a bit of a let down when he’s not singing as much as yelling through some songs.

Now, the cool thing is that Joey or whoever is writing the majority of the lyrics (they’re all credited in the songwriting column), is obviously a Stephen King fan. I didn’t even have to look up the info or lyrics for the opening, title track to know that it was talking about King’s book, The Stand. As soon as I heard “Captain Trips” I knew what it was. The Stand along with It are my two favorite King books. The “Walkin’ Dude” was also a give away as it’s talking about Randall Flagg, who shows up in over 17 King books in one form or another. “A Skeleton in the Closet” is based on the novella “Apt Pupil” from the collection book, Different Seasons. That book, incidentally, has four novellas and three of them were turned into films, two of which I consider my #1 and #2 films of all time. And neither because I’m a Stephen King fan. Just because I love the films.

The lyrics writer also is a comic book fan, because “I Am the Law” is about Judge Dredd and this is before the Sly film came out. “Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.)” is about John Belushi. I don’t know why they couldn’t spell it Efilnikufecin, but it’s not my song so, okay. If you spell the word backward it spells out “nise f***in life.” I had heard of, but not really listened to “Caught in a Mosh.” I hadn’t ever heard “Indians” even though it’s supposed to be one of their most popular songs. I dunno.

Scott Ian is probably the face of Anthrax and I have always dug him, even if I didn’t know much about the band. Actually, I’ve always known each of the members’ names but didn’t know much about them. But, Scott Ian, listed as only the rhythm player, still sounds like he’s playing leads because of the speed and depth in which he plays. Dan Spitz gets the lead duties and he’s blazing at times. But, it’s more than just speed. There are some melodic riffs in there. Frank Bello has some serious bass tone on this album. I love that he’s not necessarily playing the same things that the guitars are playing. He gets his own time to riff and shred.

All-in-all, I’m happy with the album. I’m glad that song with Public Enemy wasn’t on here. Anywhat! I think the album is a fine example of the thrash/speed metal genre. I have been known to enjoy that genre. It’s not my favorite and it’s not something I can just listen to. I have to be in the mood. Will I listen to this again? Absolutely. Would I listen to it often? Probably not. But, it’s still good. Thank you, Eugene, for the introduction. Do try to catch up soon. Jon, I know you’re back on the road for some traveling. I know you’ll get caught up, eventually.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Yeah, I know, another IPA and I hate IPAs, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. It looked interesting and I decided to take a shot. This is that shot. I love what Mother Earth does as far as their business and environmental ventures go, and I try to support them all that I can. So, when this came available to me, heck yeah, I jumped. I like Oatmeal things so why not this, eh?

BeerAdvocate has no rating as it’s that new. Untappd has it at 3.94 caps out of 5. That’s amazing. The ABV is 6.5% (although Untappd has it at 7.5%). Have you had this beer before?
