Great stuff. A lot of $1 bin things that I’ve already run through the “record washer.” They usually clean up enough to be enjoyable and sometimes you get those that are NM after the cleaning. Those are true finds! Go see Jonathan at Underdog Records and if you don’t have a turntable, he has some for sale, some hi end and some starter level. And, there’s a $1500 Marantz receiver there on consignment. There’s an audiophile on my friend/follow list that definitely wants that… I know it.

a/perture cinema, the Official Movie Sponsor of The Less Desirables, presents The Less Desirables Movie of the Week, The Jungle Book (2016), starring Idris Elba, Ben Kingsley and Bill Murray.

©2016 Walt Disney Pictures

Per IMDb: “After a threat from the tiger Shere Khan forces him to flee the jungle, a man-cub named Mowgli embarks on a journey of self discovery with the help of panther, Bagheera, and free spirited bear, Baloo.”

Mowgli (Neel Sathi) has been raised by Alpha female wolf named Raksha (Lapita Nyong’o) since he was a toddler. There has been a pact between all the animals that they could gather at a certain waterhole, the remnants of the wet season during a drought, without fear or danger of violence. Akela, the Alpha male of the wolf pack (Giancarlo Esposito), gets annoyed with Mowgli for his use of human tricks, like making tools and so on, and wants him to only act like the rest of the pack.

Suddenly, a large, mean, scarred tiger named Shere Khan (Idris Elba) shows up and senses something foul. He smells a human (we find out later that Mowgli’s human father scarred Shere Khan with fire) and wants him dead. Akela and Raksha refuse to hand him over so Shere Khan tells them that when the rains come, the truce between the animals will be over and he will come and take the man cub anyway. Later, the rains come and the pack decide to send Mowgli to the man village but Raksha refuses. Mowgli senses he’s endangering the pack and other animals so he decides to go. Bagheera the black panther who brought Mowgli to Raksha says he’ll escort Mowgli back to the village. Along the way, Shere Khan attacks but Bagheera fends him off long enough for Mowgli to get in the middle of a wildebeest herd that keeps him safe from Shere Khan but not necessarily safe from harm. The wildebeest herd is caught in a landslide from the rains and ends up in a raging river. He ends up safe and finds some food.

While chasing some thieving monkeys that stole some food, he encounters a very large python named Kaa (Scarlet Johansson). She hypnotizes Mowgli and tells him (and us) his story. She has him in her grips and is about to eat him when a large sloth bear named Baloo (Murray) shows up and saves him. It turns out Baloo needs him to do some chores for him, you know, as payback for saving his life. I’m leaving the rest of the story for you to watch yourself. I will say though, that Christopher Walken as King Louie is pretty cool. He’s more eerie than in the 1967 version. Dark, like Colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse Now!, especially in that old temple and in the shadows.

This film is far superior to the 1967 animated version, but that version still has a place in my heart, as I am a Disney freak. That being said, the effects in this film are nearly flawless and stays true to the animated version. Even though it is CGI, it doesn’t look like it and after the first bit, you start thinking these animals are really talking and doing what they’re doing in the film.

I don’t think that Neel Sethi had ever played in anything before and he was quite the actor. To be able to act like that in a CGI Green Screen world is amazing. He had to take parkour lessons to be able to move about like that. Idris Elba plays Shere Khan perfectly. His voice is awesome and it comes across here as deep and menacing. Same with Ben Kingsley. Kingsley’s voice is deeper and he sounds like a wise mentor, which fits his character. Bill Murray as Baloo brings his comedic abilities to the forefront as only a Bill Murray could do. The film is dedicated to Garry Shandling, who voices Ikki, an Indian crested porcupine. Shandling passed away after recording his parts and before the film was released.

Rotten Tomatoes rates the film 95% Fresh with an Audience score of 87%. IMDb has it at 7.5 stars out of 10. I watched the film on Netflix and I am so glad I did. I rate it 4.5 stars out of 5. Have you seen it? What did you think? What would you like to read/hear me review?

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Beer. Mmmmm beer. If you’ve ever read one of my blog posts, or listened to any of my podcasts, you know that I love me some beer. I’m a fan. It’s my favorite libation overall and my favorite kinds are vast. I don’t like “big beer” or macro brews (read Buddummer, Muller, Craps, etc.) other than a cold Miller High Life (I won’t make fun of that one). But, what I do like, nay, love is good craft beer; especially when it’s a North Carolina-based craft.16463423_1768827373143144_8885710895074226879_o

So, Sawtooth School for Visual Art will be satiating my want and desire of the craft nectar of the gods by having their annual “Arts & Craft Beer” event this evening from 5:30pm ’til 9pm. What will be laid before me for me to imbibe? Well, I’ll tell you. So far, and this could change because Meghan Parsons is awesome, Foothills Brewing, HOOTS Beer Co., Wicked Weed Brewing, Burial Beer Co., Birdsong Brewing Co., Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company, Appalachian Mountain Brewery, Ponysaurus and Four Saints are all going to have their wares in a barley, hops and malt buffet to please any beer drinker’s (well, except those that like frozen pint glasses and Dud Light) palate.

Since the first time that Meghan and I talked about this event, I’ve been excited about it. I wanted in. I wanted my shows to be in. Something I’m this passionate about and helping my pals in spreading the word? I want the world to know. Looking at this lineup of brewed yumminess, who wouldn’t want to come? And, of course, this is Arts-based, so it’s not just a place to go get crunked. There are arts and crafts to do the whole event. And, the proceeds will go toward the Sawtooth School’s Scholarship Fund to ensure that anyone can participate in the arts, regardless of their ability to “afford it.”

Yes, the time is rapidly approaching (5:30 can’t come quick enough, though) but if you buy your tix ahead of time, they’re only $20. If you buy them at the door, they’re $25. But, according to Meghan on The Less Desirables two Wednesdays ago, you can purchase them online, basically up until the “show” starts. How do you purchase these tickets to the beer world? That’s easy. Just visit the Sawtooth website for the event. Easy peasy, George and Weezy. Look for me, come say “hi.” And, slàinte mhath!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Note: I had gotten off on my sequential order. I fixed it. Just so you know. So… Another great one last week, Starz. I gotta be on the lookout for that on vinyl, really. Jon and Eugene are playing catch up. We’ll get their reviews soon. But for now, let’s get to probably the most head-scratching entry we have had on this list yet.

#16 – Special Forces by Alice Cooper.

I’ve never had strong feelings about Alice Cooper, one way or another. There have been great things like Billion Dollar Babies and Welcome to My Nightmare, sure. But, this is not Alice Cooper. I mean, it is, but isn’t. It’s all a bit weird.

There are parts that sound like Alice and some parts that sound like some other person. Now, I know that he was severely f’ed up on cocaine and alcohol at this time. I mean, he does refer to this as his “blackout period” where he had three albums he doesn’t even remember recording from his substance addictions. I don’t know if the guys in his band (or at least the recording band) just went along with him because he’s the boss or were they participating with him, or what, but they complied.

Let me say, though, there’s nothing wrong with this album. I have really gotten into the First Wave/New Wave/Post Punk stuff that happened from about 1980-1983 or so. Stuff I wouldn’t have even listened to 2 seconds of it a mere 10 years ago. The BCPF is a huge fan of that and I’ve started to really get into it. So, this isn’t something I wouldn’t listen to regularly, but for one thing: it’s Alice Cooper. Not that that matters, a good album is a good album. But, is this a good album? I haven’t decided that, yet.

In “Who Do You Think We Are,” once I get past thinking “Turbo Lover” is about to play, I keep hearing Shawn Mullins doing “Lullaby.” Only for a bit, but still it’s there. The rest of that song is Alice, but he’s scattered throughout the album. It’s not a bad song.

I do like the Berlin/Missing Persons-esque sound of the Love cover, “Seven and Seven Is” (originally known as 7 and 7 is). I like that he keeps it synthed-up, too. Oop-ip-ip oop-ip-ip yeah. I like “Prettiest Cop on the Block.” He’s not 6’3″ though (laughs). This song is very much like Alice. The same with “Don’t Talk Old to Me.”

More of the odd (for Alice) synth-based instrumentation on “Skeletons in My Closet” and “You Want It, You Got It.” It reminds me of Robert Hazard or Nails. But, then he goes back to true Alice form with “You Look Good in Rags.” Adam Ant, or the Alice Cooper version, shows up for “You’re a Movie.” This, happens to be my favorite song on the album, by the way. I love his ad-libs. The album ends well with “Vicious Rumours.”

The instrumentation listing should just read “Duane Hitchings and some other folks” because it was mostly a keyboard-/synth-driven album. There were drum machines in lieu of a drummer for a good bit of the album; sucks for you Mr. Krampf. Guitars are present but background material for the better part of the album. Listening on big speakers and headphones and even my laptops’ Bang & Olufsen speakers, Eric Scott’s bass is like Jason Newstead on …And Justice For All, and we all know how that went. Actually, the non-synth songs, you can hear him doing some cool stuff, especially in “Don’t Talk Old to Me.”  It’s just all background to the synths, I think.

So, here’s the thing. I like this album. I think it’s fun, or maybe not fun. I would like this a lot more if it wasn’t Alice treading in his demons. I’m not saying that he shouldn’t have made this album or blaming him for that. I do think it’s a cry for help, which he didn’t get for a while. So, the overall assessment is it’s a great new-wave/first-wave album. It’s not a great Alice Cooper album. But, I dig it for what it was at the time it was. It fit the time.

I want to hear Eug’s take on this and I predict that Jon will find it interesting but not necessarily like it. I could be wrong, I still have a time gauging his like/dislikes. But, it will be interesting, nonetheless.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!lazybird

City Beverage, the Official Beer Sponsors of The Less Desirables, presents Lazy Bird Brown Ale from Birdsong Brewing, The Less Desirables Beer of the Week.

We’re getting on with another Birdsong brew, this time it’s their brown ale called “Lazy Bird.” It’s 5.5% ABV and, according to Birdsong, has hints of chocolate and coffee. We’ll see how Caitlin deals with that because she has basically said she doesn’t like coffee and chocolate in her beer. Again, we’ll see.

BeerAdvocate has no rating. Untappd has it at 3.64 caps out of 5. RateBeer has it at 81 Overall and 91 in Style. Have you tried it? Did you like it? If you’ve not or just have a hankering for more, go to City Bev and grab your quad. Then tune in later tonight or early tomorrow to see how Caitlin, Danielle, Lisa, Peyton and I like it.

I do want to take just a moment and, once again, ask for positive vibes and good thoughts to the City Beverage family after the loss of Sonny this past week. Rest well, sir.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Mattress, Mattress Firm, Sleep, The BCPF, WSNC

Salutations™!!

So, for the first time since I was 15 years old (not counting a four month stint in an apartment waiting for squatters to move out of our house), my bed in my home is not a waterbed. Since day one of us moving to WSNC in 1986, I’ve had a waterbed. I’ve always loved waterbeds. Starting with a full-motion-rock-every-time-you-sneeze and then after several years of that, moving to one with better baffles, to one that is a one-second stop mattress. You move and within one second you stop. 18057978_10155076258680490_1392098438782706913_n

The first night that The BCPF stayed with me, I had to show her how to get in and out. We had a tutorial on that. Put your inside leg on the bed and roll in. To get out, roll over to put the inside leg out and it becomes your outside leg. Up and at ’em. Over the last 7 years I’ve neglected to put more water in it. That started to take its toll. Not only on the quality of the sleep but on my back, on her shoulders, everything.

I’ll admit that the appeal of the waterbed has been gone for a while but I’m a sentimental sap and I know few if any of my friends have a bed like mine. So, we decided it was time to switch from the bladder mattress to a more traditional mattress that we could pick out together, agree on and get some better sleep. We went to one of the 41 Mattress Firms over off Stratford Road and spent a few hours testing and lying around in various positions to see if we could handle any particular mattress. We did finally find one that was just right for us, not only in price but actually in comfort. We got a “pillow-top” Hampton and Rhodes model. We also decided to get the lift bases that allowed the head and legs to be raised. All good, right?

Well, here’s the catch. I was giving up the waterbed but didn’t want to give up the actual bed. We thought we could set the bases in the box my bed was in, and then put the mattress on top of that. Great. Well, not so great. Even though it’s a King size bed frame, the bases are a bit wider to accommodate the mattress. Um… okay. So, Ma Père came over and we devised a way to get the box off of the waterbed base and convert it a headboard support. Okay great. Well, since they had left the lift bases and the mattress (they couldn’t put it together, yet), we put the new mattress on top of the base of the waterbed to have a place to sleep until we could get them out to place the lift bases and synchronize them to raise together. And… just the mattress itself along with the bed base was like 30″ high. The BCPF is only 59″ high, so it already was a problem.

We decided to just get a step stool, everything will be okay… right? That was the plan until they came yesterday to put the lift bases down. They add another eight to nine inches to the height. You can look at the picture and see what the result of that was. Heck, even I, at around 6’1″-6’2″ have to actually climb up into the bed. The odd thing about me, though, is I’m actually as long in the torso as I am the legs so my legs are only 32″ even at the height I am. So, climbing, yes, but I still need a little hop to get up in there. We laughed for a good 45 minutes or so about that. But, it really is ridiculous. I’m having to face the reality that I am going to have to do without the base of my original waterbed. That saddens me, but it’s time to move on. I can possibly salvage the headboard which was what I really wanted anyway. We will have to find a way to create a stand for that. 17991844_10155076671500490_7540040454206530901_nOh, and we are using the utility step stool that we use in our house as her ladder onto the bed. I joked that I could build her a slide to come off of it.

On top of all that, we bought floor sample lift bases which were cheaper. However, the delivery people forgot to bring the remote so the lifts can’t be synced or even used. So, they have to come back, again, to do that. Third time’s a charm I guess. But, even then, we’ll have to take it apart and remove the bed base sometime in the next bit and put the legs under the lift bases to get it to work at a more reasonable (and less ridiculous) height. I will say, though, it is very comfortable. And, I got them to throw in some of the “black diamond” memory foam pillows, too. That’s pretty righteous, too. Just don’t know about being able to almost touch the ceiling whilst lying in bed; before using the lift features. Stay tuned for the next episode of Beds of Our Lives.

City Beverage, Fan Interference, Rain, The Man Who Ate the Town, WSNC

Salutations™!!

It has been a dreary, rainy, cold and crappy day all day long here in good ol’ WSNC. It’s

556486f6a2526.image

Sonny Davis (r) and son, Spencer

almost May, which should mean much warmer temperatures, at least we would think so. I went to work in shorts and a t-shirt today. I figured, well, okay, it will get warmer as the day goes on. That is not and was not the case. It stayed wet and cold all day. I recorded Fan Interference with TC at home, via Skype, and just watched the rain pour onto the street.

I saw someone laying on the ground first thing this morning, with a broken leg, waiting for ambulances, firetrucks and paramedics all rushing to help them. Luckily, the rain hadn’t come back just yet. The patient lay on the ground after a huge box of something had fallen off the truck of the delivery company he worked for and snapped his leg. I didn’t see it happen just the “waiting.” That added to my dreary day.

Then, I found out that Sonny Davis, who along with his son, Spencer, own City Beverage, passed away on Friday. He was 81. He had worked on Thursday and died at his home. As I said on The Man Who Ate the Town Podcast recording earlier today, if you didn’t know Sonny, you’d think that he was just grumpy or rude. After you’d had a chance to talk with him, and he got to laugh a little or smile, then you realized he wasn’t that way, he was just quiet and he was just, well, Sonny. I feel bad for Spencer and his family. I’m sending out good thoughts and positive vibes to them all. I’m sure they could use them.

I hope you all stay dry, warm and cozy in this “spring” weather.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

a/perture Cinema, Hush, IMDb, John Gallagher Jr., Katie Siegel, Mike Flanagan, Netflix, Rotten Tomatoes, The Less Desirables

Salutations™!!Hush_2016_poster

a/perture cinema, the Official Movie Sponsor of The Less Desirables, presents The Less Desirables Movie of the Week, Hush (2016), starring Katie Siegel and John Gallagher, Jr.

Per IMDb: “A deaf writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears at her window.”

Maddie Young (Siegel) is a deaf writer who is working on her second novel while living in semi-seclusion. She’s having trouble figuring out where to take it or how to end it. She has seven files for the ending on her Mac. Her friend and neighbor, Sarah, really liked her first book and can’t wait for the second. All of a sudden, the smoke alarm goes off. The dinner that Maddie was unsuccessfully creating was over cooking. Sarah alerts Maddie to the fact and they go into the kitchen where there’s a ridiculously loud alarm and flashing strobe light. Maddie explains that it has to be loud for her to hear the vibrations if she’s asleep.

After Sarah leaves, Maddie starts to clean up. All of a sudden, Sarah appears at her back French doors beating it and screaming at Maddie to help her. Suddenly, an arrow is launched into Sarah’s back. She turns and a masked man comes up to her and stabs her, no less than eight or nine times. Maddie hears none of this. The killer stands, staring at Maddie through the window. She doesn’t see him. He taps on the door, nothing. Hits it harder, nothing. He drags Sarah off the back porch. Moments later, he shows up, lets himself in and grabs her phone. He then goes back outside. He’s ready to play with her. How will she handle herself? Does she suffer the same fate as her friend Sarah? You’ll have to watch to find out.

The screenplay was written by the director, Mike Flanagan, and the star, Katie Siegel. I think her having a part in the screenplay enabled her to feel what was going through the character’s mind throughout this ordeal. It all happened at night and the lighting wasn’t very good, so it was hard to see everything going on. But, it was a very suspenseful film. Creepy, in fact. I think there were some plot holes but the plausibility was still there. It was hard not to say to the TV, don’t you hear him right there? when the answer was, of course, no. She’s deaf. There’s really not a lot to tell you about the film other than it was mostly edge-of-the-seat suspense. Was it a great film? No. Was it a good film? Yes.

It made it’s world premier at South By Southwest in March of 2016. By April, 2016, Netflix announced it had acquired worldwide distribution rights. Rotten Tomatoes has it rated at an astonishing 94% Fresh with an Audience score of only 74%. IMDb has it at 6.6 stars out of 10. I, of course, saw it on Netflix and rate it a 4 stars out of 5. Have you seen it? What did you think? What would like to hear/read me review?

City Beverage, Patrick Ferguson, Prince, Record Store Day, The Less Desirables, Threadbare Trio, Underdog Records

Salutations™!!

I’m going to do something I don’t usually do, Dear Reader. I’m going to do a mashup of things in one post. I usually focus, but today is a “freeform” kind of day.

Today is an anniversary. An anniversary I truly wish we didn’t have to have. It was a princegraphicnewkstpyear ago today that I stood in City Beverage, buying beer for The Less Desirables, when my phone vibrated and I looked down to read “Musician Prince Dead at 57.” I stood there gazing at the phone. Surely, this isn’t true. No way. Turns out, it was true. In a year where it seemed that many of my heroes were called away to do whatever it is you do once your light goes out, this was probably the hardest on me. I never met him. I never saw him live. But, I felt like I knew him. That’s probably borderline cheesy, but it’s true. I just couldn’t and still can’t believe we won’t get new releases from him. Not that new Prince songs won’t surface, they surely will, but it won’t be from him, just written by and performed by him. Already this week, we’ve seen a lawsuit from his family and estate seeking to stop releases of 7″ reissues that were supposed to come out either today or tomorrow for Record Store Day (more on that in a few). C’mon people, stop it! Let us enjoy his memory in peace. You’re keeping him with us but you’re giving us negative energy. He was never about negative energy. Settle the (bleep) down. I miss you, Mr. Nelson.

So, tomorrow, it’s Record Store Day and I can’t think of any place better to grab your selections than at Underdog Records. Yes, Underdog is the Official Vinyl Sponsor of The Less Desirables, but I’m not shilling for them. I truly am excited about the event and the loot that I’ll (hopefully) get. I am not excited about the crowd and line, though. I can’t help that. The BCPF has spotted a few things on the list that she absolutely has to have. I told her we have to be there way before 8am (when the event starts). We’ll see how we get on out there because I’m playing tonight and those late nights don’t bode well for early mornings. Go to the RSD website, pick your selections, then go Underdog Records tomorrow and buy some records. I really love where that medium has gotten itself back to and am excited about being part of it!

Speaking of me playing tonight. I am playing with my little trio of comedy/music (the comedy is incidental, mostly), Threadbare Trio at 6th & Vine in Winston-Salem. We do acoustic-ish covers and some original Clay Howard music. I’m not sure exactly what time we start but I would figure it would be close to 10pm (at least that’s what the Facebook Event reads). So, come out, have some dinner before we play and have a sangria or two (they’re pretty good) at 6th & Vine. Clay will be hightailing it from Walnut Cove (or where ever the rehearsal dinner is) to get there. Neal and I will hold down the fort, or at least just be ready for him, whilst we wait.

Rehearsal dinner did I say? Yes, tomorrow, my pal, sometimes bandmate and birthday sharer, Patrick Ferguson is marrying his awesomely sweet and beautiful lady, Amanda. We’re happy for him, too! He requested that I wear the kilt so I’m going to and I’m going to do trivia at the reception, so, woot! on that, right? We’ll have a fine time and I couldn’t be happier for the both of them. They’re swell people.

Okay, I think I covered all I needed to for today. I miss Prince. Record Store Day is tomorrow, go to Underdog Records (those selections aren’t being sold online or even in big-box stores), come see us play at 6th & Vine and wish P-Fug and Amanda much happiness. Thanks for reading!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…
Scorp out!
