Salutations™!!

Do you know what today is, Dear Reader? Well, I’m sure you’ve already looked at the subject line, so I can’t hide it or make it a surprise (I’ll come out from behind the couch, now). Today is International Podcast Day! Today, that is September 30, 2016, International Podcast Day.

Now, if you’re wondering why this makes me excited, then I welcome you to my blog. You must be new here if you don’t know why this gets me going. There’s Secretary’s Day, tim-podcastingNational Librarian Day, Be Kind to Lawyers Day, National Bunion Removers’ Day (I made that one up), but none of those have anything to do with me, other than on those days, I hope the people it pertains to have a great one. But, International Podcast Day is a day that celebrates exactly what I do.

Six and a half years ago, I, along with my bud Brian started a little thing we call The Less Desirables. It was intended to be a mere 20 minutes long (the length of the local average commute) to give them a once-a-week dose of pop culture. We added Eugene a year or so into it and Caitlin after Brian moved away to take a major career step. When Eugene had to move on to other things, we added Bruce. Bruce went back to Chi-Town to be with family and we added Danielle. So, now Caitlin, Danielle, a plethora of guest hosts and I have welcomed, collectively, hundreds of guests (that sounds awesome to me) on what has grown to be a two hour show. 346 episodes of it, to be exact. Starting from a meager little bedroom on the ground floor of my house to the upstairs loft to two different studios on Fourth Street, downtown, to Test Pattern Studios on Seventh. We’ve come a long way.

But, it didn’t stop there. I wanted have a whole network of shows. Chad Nance of Camel City Dispatch wanted to do a weekly “news” program and we made that happen, once we moved downtown. That lasted almost 3 years. It wasn’t because the show wasn’t any good, it was the nature of the show and the direction Chad and Carissa (his better half) wanted to take the news organization in general. Chad and I remain good friends, now, and we still work together on various projects.

Ty Collins wanted to do a sports show. A national sports show that fell in the vein of Dan Patrick or other national sports talk shows. We made that happen. It is still going on and we record them on Mondays, generally right after all the sports happens. We call that Fan Interference.

The BCPF and I were eating at a restaurant (that is no longer there) and I posted about it on social media. Another local food blogger, Nikki, and I started a conversation about food and The BCPF said, “that’s your next podcast, right there.” We invited her to meet us a few doors down and we discussed and implemented what became Tart & Tangy Triad. That went on for almost three years. Nikki and I decided to take our food styles and wants and go in different directions, but I think we’re all proud of what we had with that.

I had become friends with Jon who truly introduced to Paul (we had met once and knew each other on FB), and grew tight and on the same page about wanting to be part of something big. The BCPF and their pilots along with us three started hanging out a good bit, together. That grew into a partnership that did two things. One, J&P are now part owners of Such-N-Such Limited, Inc., which owns Such-N-Such Media, which is the production company and owners of The Less Desirables Network and all of its shows. Two, our regular business meetings at Small Batch Beer company led to one of my favorite projects, The Beer Dads, a podcast about three guys who happen to be parents (Jon of 3, Paul of 1 and me of 1) and lovers of beer, so we sit and record our “dad” conversations whilst having a brew (or more). This part of my podcasting history, I consider the most important, other than starting The Less Desirables in the first place, which set all this roller coaster in motion.

This brings me to my (so far) last entry of my podcasting arsenal. At least what I’m directly involved with and responsible for. When Tart & Tangy Triad broke apart, I decided to focus on a food blog that I’d been working on for the last several years, The Man Who Ate the Town, and I’ll admit, sporadically. Once T&TT was done, I really turned it up. I wanted it to be the source for food news in town. Now, I know that it has a ways to go before that can even remotely be said about it and it may never get to that point, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to continue trying. Anywhat! I decided that I was going to put, in one shape or another, that concept into a brand new podcast and while it’s only me, for now, I am going to start incorporating some of the food personalities around town to be guests and have guest spots and segments. It’s growing and becoming somewhat popular, at least in the food industry around town. Check… And, coming soon, a video series (still can be used as a podcast) for The Man Who Walked the Town.

So, since 2010, I have produced 734 episodes of various podcasts and those are only the ones that I was the producer, host or owner or that has been on The Less Desirables Network. Before that, as far back as 2006/2007 I was doing podcasts for a comic book store that I was suckered into being a part of. So I’ve been podcasting for about 10 years. Longer than most, and certainly the most consistent of anyone around here that I can figure. Especially, at this volume. I’ve also produced around 15 episodes for several outside sources.

And that’s what I do, now. I produce. I produce for others. You like podcasts? You want to do a podcast but don’t know what goes into it? Well, fear not! I can help with that. I’m not going to get into the logistics of it because it’s 1000 words or more in and of itself. I’ve already run this one over 1000. But, let’s just say, I am not called the “podfather” around here for nothing. Let me help you. Contact me, we’ll talk.

So… Happy International Podcast Day to all of you. I absolutely LOVE what I do and I appreciate you all for listening to my work. I can’t thank you enough. But, I’ll try. Thank you thank you thank you thank you th… You get the gist. Listen to podcasts, it’s radio on demand! Listen to mine because I need to feed the fam. I’m not afraid to say that, either (wink).

Until tomorrow, same blog (and pod?) channel…

Salutations™!!

This past week was the final week of the MM3AMMC/TLD Tap Takeover. Over the last 15 weeks, that’s right, FIFTEEN!, I’ve heard a lot of groovy tunes. 118, actually. From a return to youth or freedom or straight-forward rock to personal stories or foreign language or  “lyrical vomit” or even several songs about me. I’ve listened to a lot of music. I’ve listened to some awesome musicians, too. Clay, Doug, Jerry, Patrick, Steve, Corky, KG, Josh, Eddie and Anand, thank you all for entertaining me this last 15 weeks. Especially thanks to Doug, Josh, Eddie and Anand for sticking with it until the end.

Before I continue, I’d like to congratulate Doug Davis on his song, “Rivers to Oceans” for being last week’s “featured song.”

A recap of how this has works: So, on Monday morning around 8:30am or so, I would go and listen to the submissions. I looked over the assignment, compare the lyrics and songs to that assignment and then picked the one that I think makes the best representation of the assignment’s rules. To hear all the entrants this week visit the MM3AMMC website HERE.

This week, the assignment was from Josh: “My wife had an awesome suggestion. Write an anthem. Something that would be sung in soccer stadiums, football stadiums and other sporting arenas. Bonus points if you write one for your favorite sporting team.”

The submissions were as follows:

  • Doug Davis – “Reaching for the Sky”
  • Eddie McBride – “Fight!”
  • Joshua West – “Jezabel”
  • Anand Gan – “Rah Rah Sis Boom Bah”

So, there were 4 songs from 4 artists. And the winner was… nah, you don’t get it that easy. I mean, I want you to listen to the whole show, right? So, you need to listen to find out who won. You can do that on The Less Desirables website, on iTunes, Stitcher, TuneIn or  Podcast Addict. Or, I’ll save you the trouble and post it here, I’m good like that. And yes, there may be a reposting of this next Tuesday, you never know.

Enjoy!

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

City Beverage, the Official Beer Sponsor of The Less Desirables, presents Octoberfest by Bell’s Brewing, The Less Desirables Beer of the Week.

Okay, first thing, it’s Oktoberfest, but I’m willing to overlook that. It’s that time again; late September, the time that the real Oktoberfest is happening in Munich, all over Germany and even here in the good ol’ USA. And, it’s from a very reputable company and unnamed-7Spencer says this is one of his favorite styles from one of his favorite breweries. There are a few Bell’s that I don’t really care for and I’m not an Oberon fan. On the other hand, just about anything with a Bell’s label that resembles a darker or maltier beer, I think they’re hard to beat. I’m usually hit or miss about Oktoberfest brews, too. But, I haven’t really examined them as deeply as I should have. So, I’m looking forward to this one. It’s only 5.5% so it’s drinkable without being to awfully heavy, I’m sure.

BeerAdvocate rates it at 81 (Good) with no Bros. Score. Untappd rates it 3.62 caps out of 5. RateBeer has it at 48 overall, 85 in style. Have you had it yet? What did you think? If you’ve not or just have a hankering for more, then head down to 915 Burke Street in WSNC and pick up your sixer. Tell them that it’s the beer of the week and you get 5% off your order! Tune in to The Less Desirables and see what Caitlin, Danielle, Chef Jeff and I think about it.

Salutations™!!

Last year, I did a post about poop. Obviously, I don’t have a problem talking about that, so when I saw something about this on the Today Show this morning, I had to check it out. First, the video:

Now, the question is this: Does this address a real issue that we may have? Or is it just a money grab on some crazy gimmick? I can’t decide myself… how about you? Leave me comments.

Salutations™!!

The BCPF and I got back in the swing of things (or tried to) with The Man Who Walked the Town‘s journeys. It wasn’t easy nor was it complete. We ended up with less than 10,000 steps.

But, we weren’t trying for that yesterday. We hit Mary’s Gourmet Diner, Atelier on Trade and Hoots Roller Bar and Beer Company on our journey and it was made easier to do and keep up with, thanks to the help of my walking shoes and Garmin Vivofit 3 from Omega Sports! We then ate that night at West End Cafe. Good stuff. Bad day for me in football both fantasy and real life. But, I’ll survive.

Little Caesar or: The Less Desirables Movie of the Week

Salutations™!!

a/perture cinema, the Official Movie Sponsor of The Less Desirables, presents The Less Desirables Movie of the Week, Little Caesar (1931), starring Edward G. Robinson, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and Glenda Farrell.

Per Wikipedia: “The story of a hoodlum who ascends the ranks of organized crime until he reaches its upper echelons.”

Caesar Enrico Bandello (Robinson) and his buddy Joe Massara (Fairbanks) are two small town hoods that want more out of life than this. Joe wants to be a dancer; to get the girls and fame so he gets a job at a local nightclub. Rico wants to be a famous gangster. Rico goes to mob boss, Sam Vettori to further his goal. Joe works with the gang, basically against his will. Joe gets pegged to help rob the nightclub he works for and that creates tension between the pals and between Joe and his gal Olga Stassoff (Farrell).

The gig goes down and Rico guns down a prominent crime commissioner. He then takes over Vettori’s gang after Vettori becomes soft. He gains prominence among other parts of the mob scene as well. How high does he rise? Is there a crash in the end? Does his ego do him in? You’ll have to watch to find that out.

This is considered one of the first ever gangster films and stars one of the genre’s most prized stars, Edward G. Robinson. The film set the groundwork for gangster films. And, it’s where Robinson’s famous and patented “yeah… look here, see? you’re through, see?” whiny, tinny voice comes through, probably most famously. I thought the film was decent, and I totally get it’s place and reverence in the film world, but I don’t think it was “all that.” There were iconic moments, I suppose. It just wasn’t captivating to me. I’m sure that would have been different in 1931, when the film came out. But in 2016, 85 years later, I guess we’ve become desensitized to all the hubbub? These films, as I’ve seen, have plenty of “overacting” and much suspension of disbelief moments. And, I looked everywhere and saw no pizza pizza in the film anywhere… I kid.

Rotten Tomatoes has it rated at 91% Fresh with an Audience Score of 76%. A fairly large gap, really. IMDb has it at 7.3 stars out of 10. It was one of the 400 nominees of both the 1998 and 2007 versions of AFI‘s 100 Years… 100 Movies lists. That’s why I watched it. You can rent it from Amazon Prime for about $3 but it’s not available on Netflix streaming, or even DVD.com at this time. I give it 3.5 stars out of 5 because of its standing and importance. Have you seen it? Do you agree with my assessment? What would you like to read/hear me review? I have a viewing/reviewing schedule through January but that doesn’t mean I can’t move stuff around.

CPAP, sick, The BCPF, The Less Desirables, The Less Desirables Network, The Man Who Ate the Town, WSNC

Salutations™!!

Well, it started on Tuesday. A little roughness in the throat, a bit of drainage from sinuses that I didn’t even knew were upset with me. Well, crap, an allergy attack coming on, I said to myself. I don’t know if it was an allergy or what, but it’s completely settled in my sinuses, for sure. 200_s

I’ve been a zombie since late Wednesday night. I got through The Less Desirables. I don’t miss that, at almost any cost. I couldn’t really taste the beer, I believe I abstained from rating it because I didn’t want to give a dishonest evaluation. I wouldn’t really know what was going on. That night because I was sneezing and so stopped up, there was no sleep for me. Hard to use your CPAP when it’s only designed to work under your nose. No air in, no air out. So, I sat up or dozed all night. When I’m like that, I have “theme” dreams that continue even after I wake up. Usually, it’s a struggle with something: a work project, trying to come up with a new song, rewiring and configuring the studio, something that I’m always looking for an answer for (only when I try to sleep). I know that is because I’m not getting any rest and my mind is skipping like a stone over the still lake water (or is it rapid river? it is my head after all) and is also fighting to keep me alive – sleep apnea is a byotch mistress.

Yesterday morning, I dragged my way through doing the social media/memes/posting for TLD and that took extra time because I couldn’t concentrate. I popped some useless pills. I have to take a certain kind of allergy/cold/flu things because I have high blood pressure and regular decongestants and such wreak havoc on me or my BP meds, or something. I do what I’m told. I have no clue why I do what I do, other than The BCPF tells me to. If she wanted to kill me, she could have me take something because I do what she tells me. Don’t get any ideas, baby! The pills did no good.

I napped in and out, waking gasping for air and sneezing more. I somehow got through the Instagram and blog post for The Man Who Ate the Town. I must have done something right because Chef Travis commended me on the post. But, I was just in a daze all day. I continue to be in the daze today. I did get some sleep, though. As long as I have one nostril mostly clear, the CPAP can work. It’s rough, but it can. Now, it’s the drainage from the rest of it. My head feels like it’s in a vice and the sliding jaw is tightening every second. I can’t concentrate and I’m like a zombie. Imagine how many times I’ve had to write and rewrite this! Even though I slept I feel I could just doze off right now, sitting here.

I am behind on my work. I have quite a few things that I can’t catch up on because of this. I have a doctor’s appointment at 3:30p today. I was supposed to get my flu shot, but I figure they won’t let me since my immune system is already in overdrive. We’ll see how all of that goes. I wish to thank The BCPF for putting up with me, I know I’m a whiny little girl when I don’t feel good and she puts up with it. I really appreciate it. Okay, I’m getting off and going to sit back and stare for a bit. Thanks for listening to me rant and ramble. I apologize if any of it comes off as confusing, I’m not thinking straight right now.

Salutations™!!

City Beverage, the Official Beer Sponsor of The Less Desirables, presents The Commemorative Collaboration Oatmeal Pale Ale from Hi-Wire Brewing in Asheville, The Less Desirables Beer of the Week.

This is a collaboration effort with Hi-Wire, Fullsteam, Greensboro’s Natty Greene’s Brewing Company, Birdsong Brewing Company and Highland Brewing.  It’s a lot of unnamed-6breweries all in one bottle. Per the description on Untappd: The Commemorative Collaboration is the brainchild of co-owner Chris Frosaker. His goal was to bring together some of his favorite breweries from across North Carolina to brew the system’s inaugural batch. The resulting collaboration is a pale ale with a deluge of floral and herbal hops, brewed with oatmeal for body and mouth feel. Sessionable and refreshing, this beer is perfect for toasting our new facility and all that the future holds.

So, I’m not really sure what to expect of the brew but I do know that I look forward to it. It’s relatively light on the ABV, only 4.5%. Let’s hope it’s punchy on the flavor. BeerAdvocate has no rating or Br0s Score on the beer, yet. Untappd has it at 3.64 caps out of 5. RateBeer has no ratings as well. Not many people have had it, it seems. Have you? What did you think? If you haven’t or just have a hankering for more, head on down to 915 Burke Street in WSNC and grab your sixer from City Beverage. Tell them it’s the beer of the week and receive 5% off your order! Tune in to see what Caitlin, Danielle, Tamara and I think of it.
