I hadn’t said anything about this before because really, I didn’t know if I was going to actually do it or not. I recently applied to be an Uber driver. I was accepted after the trip to Chicago. I did take an Uber ride whilst in Chicago, from the hotel to the airport and it was a fantastic experience. Much more personable than most cabbies that I’ve had to deal with. It’s cashless and it’s safe.
There’s been a lot of bad press about Uber lately but mostly it’s with bad background checking practices and their people, not the other way around. Plus, I know many people in this town who use it on a weekly if not several times during the week. Everyone around here raves about it.
So, the trick is finding time to do it. I decided I’d try Sunday morning into afternoon. I thought I’d get a few alerts from people looking to get from home back to their abandoned vehicles after a Saturday night of debauchery. I was kind of disappointed that I didn’t offer the ride of shame.
My first ride was picking someone up at a Walmart and delivering them to WSSU. Someone to the bus station, a few students to eat, a friend to see another friend and a great guy to the mall for some souvenirs before he went back to Europe. 5 rides in about 3.5 hours. I made enough to fill my car up. Not a lot, no. But, I wasn’t doing it during the busy times (Friday, Saturday night) and really only wanted to do it for fun. I know that’s odd, but it’s just how it is. I got to meet some really nice people and it wasn’t when someone was going to throw up all in my car. I had a good time and may make that a more regular thing. I think I’ll keep it to the daytime, though. You know, Dear Reader, from reading this blog that I really don’t have time to do much, so it’s a supplemental kind of thing. Even if I make just a few bucks, that’s a few bucks I wasn’t making sitting on my behind. It’s not bad work. It does burn a bit of gas and adds some miles to the car, but I got to listen to Clay Howard’s CD whilst riding around and 88.5 WFDD’s sub-channel 2 (the classical station) whilst driving riders. So there was a little “me time” and I liked it.
So, if you’re in WSNC and you’re doing an Uber ride, you may have me as your driver. And until tomorrow, same blog channel…
