Stephanie & Tim Wedding Day -1

September 2, 2014

I was wanting to do a year in review but really all that keeps bouncing in my head is the fact that I married the love of my life, The BCPF, in September.  We had a dream wedding in a castle in Edinburgh, Scotland.  Traveled to London, then to our favorite city in the world, Paris, and Bruges and Brussels.  We had a wonderful reception/celebration later in the month with family and friends and great music.

I found a love for writing again, via this blog, with the encouragement of Kristen Daukas.

My boy, 3B, entered his last tween year and will become a teenager in 2015.

3B

I performed several awesome shows with some of my favorite musicians, called Vagabond Saints Society and look forward to the promise of an awesome 2015 season of VSS shows.

Camel City Dispatch News Show, Tart & Tangy Triad and Fan Interference all celebrated their 2nd anniversary shows.

The Less Desirables lost Brian as a regular host to move on to a new job, but he is still here in spirit (and will probably be back in 2015, one way or another).

I partied with my DFK friends (they know who they are) many times.

Spent time with my family and had a wonderful time doing so.

I made plans with some great people to start new media projects in 2015.

Bee On Your Way Travel

I left the travel agency that I had been with for almost 3 years and started my own, Bee On Your Way Travel.  I hope to serve you and your travel needs in 2015.

I went with Eugene to visit Brian in Richmond and then went to the Skins/Piles game at FedEx Field.

I’m sure there are hundreds of other things I could mention and if I think of them, well, that gives me fodder for blogging.  So, here I am telling you, Dear Reader, be safe, be happy. I hope you’ve had a great 2014, have a wonderful New Year’s Eve and have a spectaculicious 2015.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Dallas Cowboys, RVA, Washington Redskins

Salutations™!!

Eugene and I came home from Richmond, where we spent time with Brian – a little The Less Desirables reunion – and taking in a Skins game.  Eugene harps on the fact that I make it no secret that I am not a fan of the Skins, I’m a Steelers fan, but it’s cool, I enjoyed being up there.  Tailgating was fun.  Seeing the stadium was fun.  Being with my boys was fun.  The game, however, was atrocious.

One of the teams I hate the most is the Dallas Cowboys, from here on out referred to as the Cowpiles, and their fans are one of the reasons why.  I have plenty of friends who are Cowpiles fans and I’d say most of them aren’t too annoying but the overall consensus is that the fans of the team generally are.  At FedEx Field, and at the beginning of the day there was about a 60/40 split on the Skins/Piles fan attendance.  Pretty heavy actually considering this was a Skins home game and the rivalry is one of the most storied in the NFL (I personally prefer Steelers/Ravens (old Browns) rivalry), if not all of sports.  That was one appeal to me about going to the game, that story.  Anywhat! I thought the heft of the Piles attendance was odd, but I thought about it a bit more…

For one, most of the Redskins fans hate the owner of the team, Daniel Snyder.  I’ll admit he’s one of my least faves, incidentally Jerry Jones of the Piles is the other.  I just think they’re bad for business and the league.  The way they handle their teams is comparable to playground whiners taking their ball and going home if they don’t get what they want. They have too much money than they know what to do with and they throw that stuff around like nobody’s business.  So why not flip him the proverbial finger in the best way possible? His pocketbook.  A low turnout at home doesn’t do well for publicity and therefore the pocketbook.  Not that he has any trouble attracting bad publicity on his own.  The team name is one thing but his defiance (while somewhat admirable) rubs people the wrong way.

Another reason for the turnout could be the location.  Washington DC is a major hub of industry and government.  People from all over the country, heck the world, come to DC for work; here more than other larger cities outside of, I’d say, New York, LA and Chicago.  And the Piles are one of the biggest selling teams across the country, for whatever reason, it could just be location for them.  They’re close to where their team is playing, why not?

As the game progressed and the score was more lopsided, more and more Skins fans left.  Which struck me as somewhat odd, too, considering this was their last game of the season, albeit a horrible season, and they won’t see their team again for about 9 months.  Also, they certainly paid good money for the tickets.  Some people laugh at me when I’m at a movie theater and I stay through the credits.  That’s partly because I’m interested in the specifics of the film and partly because, hey! if I paid for the whole movie, I’m going to watch the whole movie.  They paid for the whole game, right; not just if they win or lose?  I get going to the parking lot early to miss the post-game crowd but c’mon.  Where’s the pride in that?

So, we stayed the whole time and watched the crowd become 60/40 Piles to Skins ration and then about 85/15.  I felt bad for the Skins fans.  There were times where you couldn’t hear any of the chants for the Skins because the Piles fans were so loud.  They didn’t let up, I’ll give them that.  The game ended up 44-17 and was more a blowout than even what the score indicates.

The fun, though, like I said, was the tailgating.  We had parking passes and parked beside a group of friends: some Skins fans, some Piles, where we proceeded to crank some tunes on Eug’s “Tailgator” mp3 amp, drink some fine beer from the area (we bought some for the cooler the night prior), ate crappy sandwiches, good chips, got some shrimp from the dudes next to us and had a rollicking fun time.   Lock chairs, beer, music, friends, food.  Good stuff.

The Less Desirables – Post Game Shenanigans.

After the game we were pretty much the last ones to leave.  We drank a little more beer (not enough to impede driving) and talked a bit.  A weird thing happened at that point. I guess I need to preface about the location.  We parked and sat in this location because there are a line of trees that enable guys to not have to hunt down a port-a-jon when the time comes.  Ok, so after the game we were waiting for traffic to thin when a lovely Latina girl in a Redskins jersey ran up and said, “Okay boys, you’ve got to spot me, I’ve got to pee, so bad!”  She then went behind the burnt orange dumpster we stood beside and dropped trow right there.  I stood next to her and turned my back so to not look.  Brian and Eugene took position to just generally keep an eye out for other people approaching; none did.  She peed for what seemed like a full minute and kept giving commentary the whole time.  I swear I didn’t look, however, peripheral vision lends a guess that she was bare-a-double-ssed against the dumpster and letting it fly.  She then stood up and explained that her sister made her get out of the car and go pee as to not do it in there.  She thanked us for being gentlemen and then set about looking for her sister’s car.  We probably shouldn’t have let her walk on alone but also, I don’t think it would have been wise to try to detain her.  She was a bit inebriated.  And like that, she was gone.

We laughed for a minute and opened another beer.  After nearly 45 minutes, we decided traffic had subsided enough to leave.  That we did.  Traffic all the way to Richmond was horrible and add the fact that it was raining, it was sloppy.  We picked up some pizza and headed back to Brian’s to watch the Steelers game (which they won, by the way).  Good times, indeed.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Salutations™!!

Today, is one year.  One year for what, you ask?  Let’s back up and give some perspective.

I was a fast food junkie.  Sometimes, my breakfasts, lunches, dinners and even late-night snacks were all from McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, Bojangles, Hardee’s, KFC, Arby’s, etc.  The BCPF rode me hard about it; wanting me to stop and eat more healthy-like, especially after my heart surgery.  So, a few days last December led to about a week that I hadn’t had any.  Being the streak-fancy kind of guy that I am, I said let me go another week.  And now, today, it’s 52 weeks that I’ve gone without any of it.

I had fallen out of love with the stuff, truthfully.  It was making me feel gross and run-down.  It wasn’t healthy (not that that really matters to me).  After a few weeks I realized I wasn’t really missing it.  I did miss the convenience of it.  I’d stop after the podcast and grab some grub or that quick breakfast burrito from Mickey D’s.  It was truly fast and easy.  But, I didn’t miss it.  Still to this day, I barely miss it.  Every once in a while, I’d love one of the fancy-ish new burgers being advertised from Wendy’s or Burger King.  Those are really the ones that I miss when I do, but I get by.  I’ve saved money, too, that helps.  You’d think that I’d lose some weight after backing off of the fast food, but alas, no, I guess I drink too much beer and that keeps me from losing it?  I don’t know.

Let me put the caveat that I do not count “deli” style places like Subway, Jimmy John’s. Tropical Smoothie Cafe, actual delis, etc., when it comes to what constitutes “fast food.”  I just don’t.  You may think, Dear Reader, that I’m trying to justify or qualify something, but I’m not.  Sandwich shops, to me don’t count.  It’s my rule and I’m sticking to it.  Anywhat! Happy anniversary to me and here’s to many more of them!

The Less Desirables with guest

So, today, Eugene and I are heading North.  Not way North mind you, just Northern Virginia. We’re going to Richmond to see our buddy and business partner, Brian Attridge.  Brian and Eugene are both fans of the Washington Redskins.  So we’re going up today to Richmond and then going to see the Skins/Cowboys game on Sunday.

I really don’t care one way or another about the game, I don’t have a horse in that race, but I do look forward to spending time with the boys, again.  The Less Desirables together again for the first time, for a one-off Meeting of the Minds and some brews.

Eug and I are renting a car (guess which travel agent booked that one) and heading up since Monté and Roxy (I think that’s the name of this one) are old and tired and we don’t trust either one to make it.  So why not let someone else’s ride do all the work?  I’ll be picking it up in a bit.  But wanted to say that tomorrow’s entry may be at a weird time unless I have time to schedule something tonight, we’ll see.  I just need a picture anyways, it’s Silent Sunday, after all.

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Finally! or: The Ebbs and Flows of the Christmastide

Christmas, Christmastide, Wheelers Dog

Salutations™!!

Ok, it’s over.  Finally over.  Christmas that is.  Will we still hear the residual Christmas song? Yes.  Will we still see the bell-like Hershey’s Kiss commercial over and over? Yes.  At least we didn’t see the Joe Boxer dudes jangling their jewels this year.  At least I didn’t.

Like I said two days ago, I love Christmas Eve.  Everything else, I really don’t care.  I know I sound like Eugene when I say that stuff (after all, we have been together for almost 20 years), but I really do not care.  Oh, I care enough to complain and scowl and roll my eyes.  Let’s say I care when it gets on my nerves.  But I don’t like Christmas.

I do, however, like the time off work, the relaxation and family time.  I remember growing up, it was time off from school, and hanging out, with friends; in snow or just plain cold.  I loved that part.  Then Christmas came and went, really quick.  Then we hit “that time.”  The time after Christmas where the elation goes away and dread sets in.

sizedimage

Word of the Day: December 24, 2014

Known officially as Christmastide, a very real word. From Dictionary.com (see picture to right):

Christmastide to me was the time of, “OK, well the presents are done, and New Years will be here soon.  Then, it’s back to school (work) and no real time off until late March or so.”  A day here and there, and there’s always the weekends, but, those are usually recover times for the next week. All the fun times had gone and it was back to the proverbial “grind” after this.  Ewwww.

Now, I guess the caveat here is, I always loved school.  Not the learning, mind you, school.  It was a social scene for me.  A place to be.  I don’t mind learning, I just don’t like being taught.  I’m stubborn that way.  And, I love what I do (now), with voice overs, travel, production and podcasts.  I love it!  So really, I guess it was the feeling that I had over the breaks.  Perhaps like those who can’t enjoy their vacation for the dread of it being over?  Maybe?  Who’s to say for sure?

One thing that I am very happy with is: even through we’ve lived together for four years, and have shared all our Thanksgivings and Christmases with both our families combined since we’ve been together, this was the first holiday season for The BCPF and I as a married family, along with 3B; one hive.

I guess all I can say to all of you is to enjoy your Christmastide and the last remaining days off before you go back to your lives.  I’ll see you tomorrow, same blog channel…

The Eve of It All or: How The Grinch Enjoys Christmas

Salutations™!!

It’s December 24. Christmas Eve. One of my favorite things of the year.  Now, let’s repeat that.  It’s one of my favorite things.  “Now, wait a minute,” you say. “You hate Christmas!”  Well, you’re correct that I say that I do.  I hate the religious connotations, the syrupy music that plays (now right after Halloween), the silly holiday commercials, and probably a notable amount more of things.  Those things, yeah, I don’t like at all, but let me tell you about Christmas Eve.

6lkerb

He double dog dared her…

It reminds me of my childhood. Christmas Eve was always the time to get together at my grandmother’s house, my mom’s mom.  Yes, there were presents, food, family and just plain fun.  Great memories. My family for this event was huge.  We were pretty tight.  My mom was the second of seven siblings and each of them are married, so that’s 14 of them and each pair had the equivalent of 2 kids. So, prior to any of the cousins having spouses, including myself (the eldest grandchild) and my sister, there are 14 of us.  Over time, most of us got married and the house got hectic.

That was back when I had to do a lot of traveling to West Virginia. I’ve lost all four of my grandparents by now, but the memories of all of them are still strong and now, since my mom’s mom passed, we started doing our thing here in NC, with my family, our kids and my parents. Then add The BCPF’s mother and brother, we have one big family hoedown.  The presents have kind of slacked off, but that’s not really the point. None of the religious stuff mentioned above matters to me, but I truly love my family and love both Christmas Eve and Thanksgiving because I get to be with them.  The food is always awesome and having the fams together is great.  Plus, there’s 24 hours of A Christmas Story. We have to see it at least once, usually twice.

So, Dear Reader, I hope that you’re having, will have, did have a fabulous Christmas Eve (and Christmas Day, too).

Until tomorrow, same blog channel…

Are We the Champions? or: The Fantasy Season Done

23 Tuesday Dec 2014

Salutations™!!

The results are in and the fantasy football season has come to an end.  Where did I finish?  Was it me that ended up on top; or did I fall short?  Well, let’s look at the standings:

Rank Team Owner Season Record Playoff Record
8 Hobbits JKC 2-12 0-2
7 Laser Rocket Arm KS 6-8 1-1
6 Gotham Knights JMC 6-8 1-1
5 CowboyNC CE 7-7 2-0
4 Junkyard Dogs JOY 8-6 1-1
3 Care Bear Stare JP 8-6 1-1
2 Blue Barracudas DJSI 10-4 1-1
1 Cast of Criminals and Invalids TGBII 9-5 2-0

So, yes! Somehow, I pulled it off! Blue Barracudas had a better regular season record, but I beat him in the championship game! I really should have lost it, but Andrew Luck had an atrocious game this week and his defense (Bills) sucked like a Hoover.  I just needed 5.75 points by Jeremy Hill from the Bengals to win by the beginning of the game.  Hill cranked out an 85-yd TD run in the 1st Qtr and combining the yardage with the TD, plus 1 pt for a 40-yd and plus 3 pts for 50-yd TD runs that gave me 18.80 points just like that.  Game. Set. Match.

It was fun and as I said in a previous post, I love and hate fantasy football.
